No F.O.D. (foreign object debris)Preventative Maintenance for Composite Tool Cleaning & Surface Preparation of Composite Parts

Dear Customer,

Manufacturers of composite parts are always looking for environmentally responsible cleaning and surface preparation methods for both tooling and finished parts. Dry ice cleaning systems provide composite manufacturers a variety of solutions to help achieve these goals by cleaning tooling in-line (or off-line) at operating temperatures, and the surface preparation of composite parts prior to painting, coating or bonding.

Dry ice cleaning can remove a variety of contaminants from many different types of tooling substrates. It is very common to clean sacrificial release agents, epoxy, Teflon® tape, tacky tape, silicones, oils, polymers, phenolic, carbon, graphite and Kevlar®. The molds themselves are manufactured from a variety of materials: steel, aluminum, Epoxy, Urethane, Teflon-Coated, Composite and some with Gelcoat. We have worked with all of them, ensuring ‘no foreign object debris’.

Most would agree that tooling is the heart of making a good composite part. We treat the molding surface of our tooling as we would a finely painted automotive surface. A tremendous amount of work goes into the design of our tooling: proper tooling base material; permanent and semi-permanent release agents, coatings, etc. Maintaining the quality of the tooling surface is vital to the continued production of quality parts. Dry ice cleaning provides a non-abrasive way to clean the tools without causing the tool wear that is seen with some traditional cleaning methods: razor blades, scrapers, brushes, rags, etc.

At Cold Jet, we understand these applications offer solutions to clean molds and composite parts faster, cheaper and better. We do so in a non-abrasive, sustainable, environmentally responsible manner. Our dry ice technology is proven to clean better, while reducing cleaning time up to 75% without causing mold wear or damage to the parts.

We also offer automated, integrated cleaning solutions. Cold Jet systems are prepared for easy integration into automated systems for cleaning or the reapplying of an even coat of sacrificial mold release agents.

Today, proven LEAN manufacturing management methodologies, such as 5S and TPM are encouraging organizations to embrace maintenance as a critical business function. Dry ice cleaning is assisting companies in reaching those objectives.

Thank you for taking the time to pursue our technologies and the solutions demonstrated in this brochure. Should you have any questions, or if we can be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely,Steve WilsonGlobal Business Unit Manager – Plastics, Rubber & Composites

How it WorksDry ice cleaning is similar to sand, bead and soda blasting in that it prepares and cleans surfaces using a media accelerated in a pressurized air stream. It differs in that dry ice cleaning uses solid CO2 pellets or MicroParticles, which are blasted at supersonic speeds and sublimate on impact, lifting dirt and contaminants off the underlying substrate.

Why it’s BetterThe unique characteristics of dry ice make it the perfect cleaning media. Dry ice is non-abrasive and non-conductive and will not damage surfaces or equipment. It sublimates on impact, leaving behind no secondary waste. It is non-toxic and safe for employees.

These attributes make dry ice cleaning an efficient, cost effective and environmentally responsible cleaning solution.

What is Dry Ice Cleaning?Environmentally Responsible Cleaning & Surface Preparation

DRY ICE IS ACCELERATED BY COMPRESSED AIR THROUGH A NOZZLE AT SUPERSONIC SPEEDS.

THE TEMPERATURE (-109°F ) OF THE DRY ICE CAUSES THERMODYNAMIC SHOCK. THIS HELPS BREAK THE BOND BETWEEN THE SURFACE AND THE CONTAMINANT.

ONCE THE DRY ICE COLLIDES WITH THE SURFACE, IT SUBLIMATES - CAUSING A MINI CO2 EXPLOSION, LIFTING AWAY THECONTAMINANT.

BECAUSE DRY ICE IS NON-ABRASIVE AND TURNS TO GAS, YOU ARE LEFT ONLY WITH A CLEAN SURFACE - NO SECONDARY WASTE.

Dry Ice MicroParticles

Less Air. Less Ice. More Coverage

Cold Jet’s patented MicroParticle technology shaves dry ice into sugar-sized particles. By shaving dry ice into MicroParticles, more media strikes the surface per second than traditional methods, which results in an increased coverage area and more particle strikes per square inch. This leads to a faster and more even clean.

The particles are less aggressive than pellets and are delicate enough to thoroughly clean sensitive materials without damaging the surface. The particles can enter the hardest to reach places that pellets and conventional methods cannot.

i3 MicroClean®

• Accepts pellets, nuggets or block with patented shaving technology

• Designed for absolute precision

• Easy to maintain with removable panel design

SDI Select™ 60• Uses any form of dry ice

• Bypass for full 3mm pellet performance

• Clean from as low as 50 CFM, using 1/3 of the compressed air and reducing noise levels and air usage

• Increase blast pressure up to 250 PSI to clean the most stubborn contaminants

A More Effective CleanWith MicroParticles, less air power is needed to accelerate the dry ice, which significantly reduces compressed air consumption. The improved particle coverage and increased particle strikes result in less kinetic energy needed to remove contaminants from surfaces. This results in less dry ice being required to clean.

Less compressed air and less dry ice leads to a quieter and more efficient clean.

OPTIMIZING MACHINE UTILIZATION AND PROCESS UPTIMEAEROSPACE CASE STUDY

COMPANYHill Air Force Base,US Airforce

APPLICATIONRemoval of Sealant from F-16 Jet

COLD JET SYSTEMCold Jet Dry Ice Cleaning Unit

BENEFITSSave time, Money and Manpower

THE SITUATIONAt Hill Air Force Base near Ogden, Utah , F-16 wings are brought into the shop and sealants need to be removed before they are repainted with fuel-resistant paint. To remove sealant from F-16 wings, the 574th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron was using manual scraping with abrasive scrapers.

THE PROBLEMThe process being used to remove the sealant from the wings was very time consuming, can damage the wing paint and uses too much manpower. To remove the sealant properly a person needed to crawl into a hole and scrape the wings while upside down.

Mr. Hathaway, F-16 Wing Shop supervisor, confirms, “scraping an entire F-16 wing takes four shifts and three to four people per shift. Scraping sealant by hand is one of the worst jobs for a sheet metal mechanic - it uses too much manpower and can cause carpal tunnel syndrome”.

THE SOLUTIONHill Air Force Base tested a Cold Jet blasting machine, which uses dry ice pellets which were purchased per container from a Salt Lake City ice company (Airgas Dry Ice). Using the Cold Jet blaster, an entire F-16 wing could be blasted in four shifts

by only one person! To remove the sealer, the pellets are driven at 1.5 kg - (3.5 lbs) per minute. The machine is capable of operating at 0 to 3.2 kg - (0 to 7lbs) per minute. The ice is blasted through a blast swath nozzle using building-supplied air pressure at 5.5 bar (80 psi).

Not much larger than a grain of rice, the dry ice pellets are formed from frozen carbon dioxide. Frozen at - 79 degrees °C (-109.3 degrees) the dry ice causes material like the sealant to shrink and lose adhesion from the sub-surface. At the same time, the temperature of the sub-surface causes the dry ice to convert back into carbon dioxide gas or “sublimate”. As the dry ice pellets sublimate, it does not create secondary waste.

THE RESULTS“Using Cold Jet Dry Ice Blasting is so much easier. The sealer is in a dry state, so once it’s removed, it can be swept up and placed in the trash,“ said Marion Long, 574th AMXS Structures Section Chief. “There‘s no biohazard or bead media to contain, and it’s safe to use on aluminium as thin as 0.0762 cm (30/1000ths of an inch).”

Workers don’t need to wear hazardous material suits to operate the blaster - the only extra equipment needed is a face shield, to protect against sealant residue particles, thick gloves for handling the dry ice and hearing protection.

“USING COLD JET DRY ICE BLASTING IS SO MUCH EASIER, THE SEALER IS IN A DRY STATE, SO ONCE IT’S REMOVED, IT CAN BE SWEPT UP AND PLACED IN THE TRASH.“
