Celebrate Mother’s
Day
May 10, 2015
The Forest
Hills Messenger
Month of May 2015
One Day, Every Day Since I was a perfect kid, mom had it easy. Okay, clearly that wasn’t the case. I was a bit of a handful. I was always getting myself into bad situations. Trouble followed me like the raincloud that followed Wile E. Coyote. I remember one spring day I was roaming my neighborhood on my purple bike. Riding that bike was my favorite thing to do. Well, a friend and I stumbled on some bigger boys, my older brother included, at the top of Montbeck Hill. They were talking about doing a wheelie all the way down the hill. They said it couldn’t be done. I couldn’t keep my big mouth shut. I shared with those big chickens that it could be done. I was so bold in my 10-year-old confidence that I talked myself into doing it. So, I got up a head of steam and popped my front tire in the air and started downhill. About two-thirds of the way down, everything was going great. I had almost fulfilled my boast. Then I hit the manhole cover. You’ve got to know something about this road — it was the old style paved road, crushed rock embedded in tar. The road had settled, leaving the manhole cover raised as a lip. My back tire went over the bumpy road around the cover and it shook my front tire off the forks! Now I was holding on for dear life while my front tire flew into a backyard. After just a few feet, my front forks came crashing down. They dug into the pavement while I flew over the handlebars. Something predictable happens when a boy traveling downhill at high speed crashes his bike while wearing shorts. ROAD RASH! I was a mess. I had dirt and tar and rocks all down my left side. I still have the scars. I abandoned what was left of my beautiful purple bike in the middle of the road and ran home screaming … to MOM! Mom was always there, that day and every day. It didn’t matter what stupid thing I did, mom loved me through it, nursing wounds and ego. Moms, one day each year is not enough to honor all you do. A heartfelt thanks for doing your best with what you were given! Your children are grateful.

FINANCEMay
If you were on the Mercer Campus, Saturday, April 11, you
would have seen the orange Mercer truck filled with food
for the Backpack Ministry. Make It Mercer Day brought 435
upcoming students and their families to the campus. They were asked to bring food to help the Backpack Ministry. Student volunteers packed 287 bags which add up to over 4,000 food items that were collected.
We are so thankful that God has given us the opportunity to
partner with others in our community to feed hungry children . Another Mercer thank you goes to the group
of football players who have
faithfully volunteered for 3
years packing 100 bags every week. It is a blessing to watch
these young men serve.
