SOCIETY NEWS - RECENT EVENTS
Distinguished Visitors from Nagaoka, Japan
Visitors from Nagaoka came to discuss future programs to continue the success of
the Fort Worth Sister City program. The guests were Messrs Kazuhiko Hara,
President, Nagaoka International Exchange Association, Katsuhiro Takano, Nagaoka
International Exchange Association and Tatsushi Shinzawa, Assistant Director,
International Affairs Division, Nagaoka City Office. Some of you may recognize Mr. Hara’s name, since his is the name associated with the Harashin Scholarship
program which funds exchange student programs for both Nagaoka and Fort Worth students. He continues his father’s generous financial support so that numerous
students have the opportunity to develop life-long friendships and discover our
cultures.
September Luncheon
Over forty members attended our pot luck luncheon
and the viewing of the Emmy Award-Winning documentary, “The Legacy of Heart Mountain.” Many of us are already aware of the treatment of
Japanese Americans in the U.S. during World War
II, but this film was exceptionally well done giving
viewers an opportunity to understand from personal
narratives how they overcame their terrible
conditions by growing their own food and organizing
schools and activities to try their best to provide as
normal a life as possible behind barbed wire fences.
Waseda University and Texas A&M
In September, Harvey Yamagata attended
a meeting in downtown Fort Worth at the
home of the law school recently acquired
by Texas A&M University. TAMU and
Waseda U. in Japan have made an
agreement to partner in various projects to
mutually enhance the opportunities for
both their students and teaching staff.
This would include enabling students to study at each other’s schools and exchange
of guest lecturers. We all know that TAMU is one of the leading universities in Texas
and the U.S., while Waseda U. is considered one of the top five universities in
Japan. The two universities have asked that our society stand ready to assist them
if the need arises to help visiting students and lecturers from Japan.

We watched an exceptional
documentary on the life of Japanese
Americans during WWII
