Our students spent several months prior to the conference designing creative processes to engage other students in the school to “unleash the potential” as part of their commitment to this conference and the notion that imagination must come first. Rhiannon Bell, Amy O’Neill, Nicholas Gaston and Nicholas Stephens in Year 11 led this project. They worked with several Year 10 students on the development of ideas to change attitudes on some major social issues including racial discrimination, bullying, homophobia, drug abuse and child abuse. Such big topics, I’m sure you would agree. Teams of students developed their projects, culminating in a presentation to peers and some teachers. They were truly amazing. And it was this entire project that was presented to an audience of 400 educators from across and outside the region, last week. Two of the final products are videos which have been uploaded on our website. On bullying and racial prejudice, the videos are confronting, memorable and inspiring. Both themes fit in beautifully with our anti - bullying directions and with the central theme of our ethics classes in Year 7 “Care of Self, Care of Others”. You will find the videos under the “Caring for Students” tab on our website. Subject selection nights for Year 8 and Year 10 These are important evenings for students and their parents. Selecting the right subjects for future study entails the understanding of new and critical information. To this end, on Thursday June 7 we will commence the process for Year 10 students, embarking on subject selection for senior HSC study. This will be an evening of important information for students and their parents. This will be followed by more intense workshops for students and the all important personalised interviews for each Year 10 student prior to the submission of the first round of subject selections. Year 8 students and their parents will be invited to an information evening on Thursday June 14, again for a similar process to learn more about subject selection for Year 9 and 10. Congratulations Matthew Weal in Year 12 has just won the National Championships Senior Elite (Open) Men’s Trampolining event, held at Homebush recently. With aspirations for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he is well on track to realising the dream.

Junior assessment schedules Parents of students in Year 7 – 10 will have received by email a junior assessment schedule recently, to assist parents and students in organising their studies and homework. The Wizard of Oz Our annual musical is a highlight in our calendar. This year, staff and students have produced “The Wizard of Oz” known to many and a favourite world - wide. Rehearsals, as always, have been frantic with lots of high drama, last minute touches and ongoing refinement. And, as always, there is a huge team of people, both on stage, in the orchestra pit, front of house and behind the scenes working to bring entertainment to audiences ranging from the local primary schools, residents of Mowell Village, parents, families and staff. It’s a great occasion. Ms Jennifer Merryweather is this year’s director, taking on the responsibility of managing an enormous creative team. She has done a wonderful job. No doubt you will enjoy the fruits of her labour, the talented and engaging cast and the sense of team and energy that comes from this terrific event. Congratulations to all involved.

SPORTS COUNCIL SPORTS SPOTLIGHT

Tayla Clifford Touch What does the sport of Touch involve? Touch involves speed, agility, vision, hand and eye coordination, but, most important is a good fitness level. What level of representation have you achieved in Touch? I have played rep level for 8 years. At school level, I have played for Sydney West in both juniors and opens age groups. I have also played for NSW PSSA in the U12's and am currently in the U15's NSW CHS team. I have represented the Sydney Scorpions at U14's, U16's and U20's and played for a NSW All Stars team against New Zealand in 2011. What training do you do for Touch? A lot of fitness/speed and agility training combined with ball sessions and set move sessions. What do you enjoy about Touch? I love being fit, playing at the highest levels, and making so many great friends. What other sports do you participate in? I have played both club and rep soccer and netball previously, but have stopped so that I can focus on Touch. Thank you for the interview Sports Council

CLASSIC MOTHER’S DAY FUN RUN

The annual Mother’s Day Classic fun run and walk held at Parramatta Park on Sunday 13 May saw a record 5,500 participants in Australia’s largest breast cancer fundraiser with all money raised going directly to breast cancer research. Castle Hill High School was well represented on the day with a team comprising staff, students and their respective families. Castle Hill High was represented in all events, being the 4km and 8km runs and the 4km and 8km walks. It was a humbling and positive day where not only was our contribution to a great cause worthwhile, but the performances were top class. Castle Hill High’s efforts resulted in the school being awarded the trophy for the largest school team at the presentation ceremony. The challenge has been set for next year’s event, with the aim for a minimum of 50 people for our school team.

LANGUAGES NEWS

These last few weeks have been very eventful for the languages faculty. On May 18, we welcomed 8 exchange students from the South of France. They will be here for six weeks, generously hosted by Castle Hill High School families. On May 24, 34 Japanese students and their teachers visited our school. As they alighted from the bus, they were warmly welcomed and partnered up with Castle Hill High School students. An extensive program of cultural exchange activities was undertaken. On May 29, over 300 students attended the play Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes at the Castle Hill RSL.

Relay For Life – What a great weekend!

The School team consisted of over 90 walkers made up of students, teachers and parents. The School’s Concert Band performed at the Opening Ceremony. The P&C and parents once again managed the registration Marquee/storage tent, assisted the walkers in recording their laps and generally provided encouragement for the 24 hour period. The final lap winner was Adar Larsen of Year 12 with 117 completed laps. Adar was followed by Jacqui Rhodes, Kira Leiva and Claudia Chow. Special mention also to Dean Ross and Damien Mulvanah who were equal 5

th with 66 laps each.

In total the school team walked 2321 laps (900 km’s) in the 24 hours. In excess of $2000 was raised via web site sponsorship. Additional funds were also raised from school activities and the sale of items on the day. Special thanks go to Ms Boss, Mr Gainey and the parents who nominated to manage the Marquee and tent over the weekend. Bruce Rhodes once again did a stellar job co-ordinating the base camp.

HSC Survival Guide – for parents This article is designed to give parents some survival tips and strategies for supporting young people during exam time.

maintain perspective: success in exams is wonderful and can lead to further success and confidence in young people. At the same time, success in exams, at the expense of a young person’s mental health or their relationship with their parents may not be worthwhile.

tune into what your child wants to achieve. This may be completely different to the goals that you hold for them.

help your child to think about goal setting – knowing what goals they want to achieve is an important first step in planning for the future. Then they can research what is needed to reach their goals.

support your child to find a level of balance of study, socialising and recreation that is appropriate to their goals.

notice and praise your child’s efforts at developing and maintaining a study plan. If necessary and appropriate, help them to develop the plan, manage their time and to avoid other distractions (eg phone calls, Facebook, part-time jobs etc)

ensure your child has an appropriate environment for study – a dedicated, quiet space that is comfortable, has adequate lighting and is free of clutter.

provide emotional support. Acknowledge the challenges and perseverance it takes to stay focused and studying. Be there for them, be supportive and encouraging. Praise them for all of their achievements.

be supportive by giving your child space and leeway as they go through a very stressful time in their life. Try to have realistic expectations about what you can expect in terms of helping around the house and try to avoid nagging them about minor issues.

if your child feels unprepared and anxious, don’t panic with them or make things worse with “I told you so’s”. Reassure them that they can only do their best and help them to develop and apply relaxation and time management strategies.

lastly and most importantly, prepare yourself for the exam results. This can be a very emotional time for families either in celebration of a great achievement or problem solving after a disappointing result. Either way it is good to allow your child to have the feelings that come with the result. If it is a disappointing one, it is good to name the feelings (eg disappointment, shame, jealousy) and to help them manage this intense new feeling and to eventually move on to look at other options available, as well as what they can learn about themselves in the process.

The final word belongs to well-known adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg:

"I'm urging those parents that can, to take a week off and be around the house.

"The parents' role is to be encouraging and supportive, to come upstairs with a cup of tea and a Tim Tam every now and then and just make encouraging noises.

"The worst thing they can do is what I call the vulture syndrome, where they swoop down on the kids the moment they move away from their books.

"We should be encouraging them to take breaks, and we should be saying that sleep is the most important study tool going around."
