SPECIAL AWARDS CRITERIA
Scholar Athlete:
Scholar Athlete is a term applied to those juniors and seniors who have achieved the highest level of development in academics and athletics. Each recipient shall have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above, have followed the Co-Curricular Code throughout the current school year and earned a varsity letter during the current school year as a player, a manager, a cheerleader or a student sports medicine aide. At Centerville High School, we are proud to recognize those individuals who represent to the high school student body, the community and to their parents our best hopes for a humane and creative future.
GWOC All Academic Team:
The Greater Western Ohio Conference All-Academic Team recognizes outstanding achievement in scholarship and athletics in its member schools. Membership is awarded each year to the ten senior male and ten senior female varsity athletes with the highest grade point averages in their respective schools.
EPND Scholar Athlete Award: (New this year – was Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award)
Each year, the Athletic Department presents the EPND Scholar Athlete Award to select high school students. This award goes to the varsity male and female student-athletes who best exemplify the Centerville motto “Elk Pride Never Dies”.
2018-2019 Recipients: Pruitt Walther & Alan Flower United States Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award:
The Distinguished Athlete Award is a national award sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. The recipients are varsity athletes who are exemplary citizens and role models exhibiting the personal traits of courage, poise, self-confidence and leadership.
2018-2019 Recipients: Marissa Wenzler & Kyle Moyer
NFHS Award of Excellence:
The National Federation of High School’s Board of Directors and NFHS Citizenship Committee has
permitted each OHSAA member high school to award the NFHS National Award of Excellence to one
male and one female senior student who has displayed exemplary sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.
This award is for a student in your school who has exhibited qualities that embody good citizenship, good
moral character, and good sporting behavior.
Guidelines for awarding this certificate are as follows:
• The award recipient(s) shall be students who may or may not have participated in interscholastic
athletics during the current school year.
• Individuals should be positive role models for others and should encourage others to be positive role
models.
2018-2019 Winners: Sam Chable & Trey Ramsey
OHSAA State Award for Exemplary Contribution and Service:
The Ohio High School Athletic Association has established an annual state Sportsmanship, Ethics and
Integrity Award available to every OHSAA member high school. This adult award is for a coach, teacher,
administrator, booster or supporter of the school program. It is an opportunity for every member high
school in Ohio to honor one of their own with this prestigious state award.
Suggested guidelines for selection:
1. A person within the school or community who continually exemplifies good sportsmanship.
2. A person who is a positive role model for others.
3. A person who reflects a high level of ethics and integrity in dealing with students and the
interscholastic athletic program.
4. A person who supports and demonstrates positive values.
5. A person who has contributed to the well-being of the youth of the local high school.
2018-2019 Recipient: Rob Ingle
Terry Wieland Character Award:
Terry Wieland was a student at Centerville High School from 1978-80. He was a fine young man who was dedicated to his family, friends and school. He was a good student, a goalie for the CHS hockey team and played in the Washington Township baseball program. Each year a plaque goes to one male and one female senior student-athlete who best represents Terry’s qualities of scholarship, leadership, honesty, determination, enthusiasm and respect for coaches, teachers, parents and peers.
2018-2019 Recipients: Grace Kilroy & Matt Pearce Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award:
Sportsmanship, ethics and integrity are essential components of any successful athletic program. As part
of an ongoing program to promote Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity, the Ohio High School Athletic
Association would like to recognize students who display exemplary sportsmanship. The award, named
for Archie Griffin, goes to one male and one female student-athlete every year. Mr. Griffin is an Ohio
native and the only two-time recipient of the Heisman Trophy for college football. As a professional
athlete, he always displayed exemplary sportsmanship. Mr. Griffin, current CEO of The Ohio State
University Alumni Association, has been active in promoting sportsmanship, ethics and integrity for many
years. In 1998, Archie was the recipient of the prestigious OHSAA Ethics and Integrity Award.
• The award recipient should be students and does not need to be an athlete.
• The school may select two students, one male and one female.
2018-2019 Recipients: Kayla Ramsey & Bobby Gabriel
OHSAA Courageous Student Award:
The Ohio High School Athletic Association continues to disseminate a “Courageous Student” award. Each
high school may present this certificate to One (1) deserving individual in their local school who is
1. A student who recently, or in the past, has overcome a serious illness, injury, or disability.
2. A student who has overcome great adversity in a positive way (challenging social or family situation).
3. A student who has gone far beyond normal in assisting a fellow student, family member or friend.
4. A student who has faced other extraordinary situations, or displayed tremendous courage against
overwhelming odds.
This award brings credit to a very special student who has been involved in, or supportive of, the
interscholastic athletic program and who deserves recognition for courage. It is not only for special
education students. However, they should be a candidate if their situation merits consideration.
2018-2019 Recipients: Adrian Bostwick & Teagan McQuillan
CHS Scholar Athletes of the Year:
This award goes to the senior male and female athletes having the highest grade point average and having earned at least two (2) varsity letters during their high school lifetime with one award being earned during the senior year as a player, manager, student sports medicine aide or cheerleader and having followed the Co-Curricular Code throughout their high school career. If there are other senior recipients having grade averages within .1 point of the top scholars and having completed more high school athletic seasons in total than the top scholars, the greatest participant of that group shall share the Scholar Athlete of the Year Award equally with the highest male and female scholars.
2018-2019 Recipients: Emily Whitehead & Matt Pearce OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award:
As a part of our ongoing program to encourage achievement in the classroom, as well as on the playing
surface, the OHSAA would like to recognize some of the state’s top scholar-athletes.
This award exemplifies the commitment the OHSAA has dedicated to academic excellence while
participating in interscholastic athletics.
The guidelines as approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors are as follows:
