Luke and the Calf Symbol

“... And in the middle of the throne and around the throne [I saw] four living creatures full of eyes before and behind,

and the first creature was like a lion,

and the second creature was like a calf,

and the third creature had the face of a man,

and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle.”

Revelation 4.6-7

Evangelist traditions: Irenaeus (c. 180 CE)

Matthew, among the Hebrews, among the Hebrews and in their own language, produced a written account of the gospel, while Peter and Paul were in Rome evangelizing and founding the church.

After their departure Mark also, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, handed down to us in written form what was preached by Peter.

And Luke, the follower of Paul, set down in a book the gospel preached by him.

Then John the disciple of the Lord, who reclined upon his breast, gave out a gospel while living in Ephesus in Asia.”

1 Since many have undertaken to set down an account of the events that have been fulfilled

X among us... // Now at the time of the incense-offering, the whole assembly of the people

was praying outside. Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the

right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified... // And

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35The angel said to her:

2 “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the

V power of the Most High will overshadow you;

therefore the child to be born will be holy; he

will be called Son of God.

3 And now your relative Elisabeth in her old age has

X also conceived a son...”

2 So all the generations from Abraham to David are

X fourteen generations; and from David to the

deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and

from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah,

fourteen generations.

3 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in

V this way. When his mother Mary had been

engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together,

she was found to be with child from the Holy

4 Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man

X and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace,

planned to dismiss her quietly...

The angel said to

her: ‘The Holy

Spirit will come

upon you, and the

power of the Most

High will

overshadow you;

therefore the child

to be born will be

holy; he will be

called Son of God.
