Personally, I have been impressed by the apparent genuineness and spiritual character of the men who are charged with the task of selecting the successor of Peter. Dear Friends,

Lately, as I’ve been watching the coverage of the cardinals gathering in Rome to prepare for the Conclave to elect a new pope, my mind has been turning to people who have drifted away from the Church. I can’t help but wonder what those individuals’ thoughts are about all of the activities associated with this process. Personally, I have been impressed by the apparent genuineness and spiritual character of the men who are charged with the task of selecting the successor of Peter. I wonder if those who are estranged from the Church see the same things. I also wonder how the Church and the new pope will address the seeming diminution of Church attendance in various parts of the globe. One thing’s for sure. This weekend’s Gospel reassures us that the Church always has its arms open and ready to receive its prodigal children.

It is no secret that there are many challenges facing the Church in an increasingly secularized society. Greater and more widespread affluence, the allure of technology, and the influence of various forms of social communication often distract people from God. As a result, many do not sense the importance of faith in their life as much, and so faith practice becomes minimized. The same thing can happen to those of us who regularly participate in the life of the Church. We may be zealous for a time, and then that enthusiasm wanes as we fall into routine or become distracted by more worldly pursuits.

Like the prodigal son, we can all disengage from our attachment to God and plunge ourselves into the things that this earthly existence offers. Frequently, our will vacillates between what God wants and what we want. Many times, the two synchronize, but at other times, they don’t. When we do stray from God, our lives become affected in a negative way and we don’t always perceive it. Only after time might we possibly realize the void that is present within.

The things that usually bring people back to their senses are crises or some other challenging event. Occasionally, a certain boredom or dissatisfaction with life will turn a person around. I think the unusual circumstances of a Conclave can also perk up a person’s interest in the Church and help them to appreciate what they have been missing. The Church has a rich tradition and the grace that the Church affords is incomparable.

Whatever the case may be, we can all identify with the prodigal son. We each have had our moments of “going it alone” and then realizing we have made a mistake. In those instances, we express contrition, ask forgiveness, and move on, trying to do better. What is most important is that we see the need for change. We then have the opportunity to seek reconciliation through the sacrament of confession. It is

there, in the sacrament of confession, that we encounter the loving embrace of the Father who restores our dignity and pulls us back into divine life.

If the Church is ready to receive back those who occasionally fall into sin, all the more willing is She to receive back those who have been alienated from Her for longer periods. If there is a personal situation keeping a person away, we are ready and willing to help rectify it. The same goes for those who have been offended by a person or community. What is often harder is disinterest in things related to God. Jesus invites each of us to stir into flame the love for this life we live. The Church is a living reality which seeks to help people discover the never-failing love of God.

Like the father in the Gospel, the Church is always waiting with eager anticipation and hoping that her wayward children will return. In fact, we are all called to reach out to others and invite them home. It seems to me that God will bring about a resurgence in faith. People will return to the spiritual nourishment that Christ provides through the Church. Perhaps you can see signs of this reality already! God bless!

Fostering Community Banking in the Dominican Republic

CRS Rice Bowl invites us to learn about the Dominican Republic this week, where CRS helps women form savings and lending communities that help them save money and access small loans for new businesses. Pray for these women who have the courage to start their own businesses, and make a contribution to your Rice Bowl to support people working to provide a better livelihood for their families.

School NewsBy Principal Kathy Clark

By the time you read this bulletin, the students and staff of St. Pius X Catholic School will have begun their Spring Break, a long anticipated week off from school. Judging from the excitement in the air last week, one would have thought they were getting off for the summer break! It was difficult to know who was more excited—the teachers or the kids! Nevertheless, it’s always nice to get some “R & R.” When we return, we will be holding on to our hats, so to speak, because the last quarter of school zooms by.

Our early childhood and kindergarten students had a fun day on Friday. As a culminating activity to their unit on Texas, they had a “rodeo” in the Parish Hall. A cowboy brought his horse to school and showed them how to saddle and handle a horse. They also had stick horse races, face painting, panning for gold, and campfire songs around a “campfire.” It was a nice end to a fun unit.

Two of our students competed in the Coastal Bend Science Fair on Saturday. Alexis Alaniz (3rd Grade) won 1st place in her division at the Diocesan Science Fair, and Ellie Ostrom (4th Grade) won 3rd place. We are proud of these girls for making it to the area-wide competition.

When we return from Spring Break, the teachers will conduct Parent Conferences with the parents of their students. School will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m. on those days. It’s a great way to let parents know how their child has done in school so far. Report cards are given to the parents at the conferences.

Our Golf Tournament is less than one month away. This year’s tournament will be held at the Corpus Christi Country Club on Friday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m. Teams are forming and sponsors are lending us a hand with their support. We are blessed to have such great support from our parishioners who are purchasing raffle tickets and making extra donations. Our tournament sponsor is Frank and Susy Battaglia. They have been supporting our golf tournament for many years. We are most appreciative of them. Our Men’s Club will have two teams this year and many other parishioners are expressing a desire to play. We will have nice prizes for the winners, as well as a live and silent auction after the golfers finish their play. The winner of the raffle will be determined at that time, also. Hopefully, it will be one of our parishioners.

If you know anyone who might want to play on a team, please let us know. The number at the school is 992-1343. We would love to sign them up. We are hoping to have a team or two of priests. Fr. Paul and Fr. Joseph need some competition!

Have a blessed week!
