Samuel Blundell, Benjamin Letellier, Miguel Martinez, Teressa Martinez, Warren Rogerson, And William Rogerson III upon making your First Communion last SundayTHE HOLY SPIRIT WITH US, LOVE:What a realist this Jesus is! We, however, are the ones who tend to make love unrealistic. We tend to make love into something soft, dreamy, and cheap, merely a feeling. If you think we don’t, then just take a look at what television does with love, and how Hollywood treats it. Jesus, on the other hand, defines love in terms that are strong, concrete, self-sacrificial, and very real. Love is action; love is a way of living; love is an attitude toward others that expresses God’s attitude toward others. And then Jesus went on to cry out: “The one who hears my words and keeps them is the one who loves me.” That’s how we know that we live and have our being in love.

The Holy Spirit, the Person of the Holy Trinity who is Love personified, acts internally within each one of us. The Holy Spirit is present within our hearts and souls, animating, vivifying, and inspiring us. We can never see the Holy Spirit as separate and apart — standing alone. The Holy Spirit lives and breathes within our souls. We see the Holy Spirit in our actions and in the actions of others.

Love and the Holy Spirit – both cannot be known in and of themselves. Both are made present to us, made real for us. Both are realized in acts, in deeds, in things that are done. Both animate and vivify us, filling us with their special life. Both are expressions of God. God makes Himself real for us, expresses Himself, and becomes present to us in both love and in His Holy Spirit.

PARISH LUNCHEON NEXT SUNDAY!SIN OF SILENCE . When Nazi thugs moved through the cities of Germany smashing the windows of Jewish homes and shops, a few people spoke up but not very many.Men, women and children were murdered and became innocent victims, yet few wished to "get involved" in this "political issue." That was the beginning of the Holocaust and the perpetrators gained confidence to carry out their atrocities because most people looked the other way and did nothing.Tragically, it is happening again today in our beautiful America, so richly and abundantly blessed by a gracious God. Once again, the innocent are being slaughtered in a forty year Holocaust that has seen over 60 million children brutally put to death by legalized abortion. It is absolutely imperative that Christians stand up and be counted. We simply cannot remain silent in the face of evil and moral perversity!"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." German pastor, Pastor Martin Niemoller www.pro-lifearticles.org

VIRGINIA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE:How did your state legislators vote on issues important to Virginia Catholics? Find out by going to the Virginia Catholic Conference website at www.vacatholic.org for charts of key votes taken during the recent 2017 General Assembly session. The Senate and House charts track major legislative pursuits of Bishop Francis DiLorenzo and Bishop Michael Burbidge through the Conference, their public policy agency in Richmond. Included are votes on an initiative to defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers, a measure to protect faith-based institutions from being punished for acting according to their beliefs, and efforts to protect immigrants and refugees. Email advocacy network members – made up of Catholics in the pew, clergy and other concerned citizens -- contributed to the Conference’s work by contacting their senators and delegates before key votes. Please join the network today at www.vacatholic.org!

THE BISHOP KEANE INSTITUTE: Dr. Amy-Jill Levine - Wednesday May 3, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.JESUS, THE JEWISH STORYTELLER: OF PEARLS AND PRODIGALSYou've just celebrated the Easter mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus, now, let's learn more about the Jesus that was the skilled storyteller. About the Lecture:

Join Dr. Amy-Jill Levine for a fascinating and thought-provoking talk. Jesus was a skilled storyteller who used examples from everyday life to speak about economics and politics, family values and social concerns, justice and compassion. But, removed from their historic setting in first-century Galilee and Judea, contemporary interpretations of Jesus’s parables may lose their original provocation and the genius of his teaching. Levine will discuss the historical context of his teachings, in particular Judaism and the Jewish scriptures that shaped his stories.

About Dr. Amy-Jill LevineAmy-Jill Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, and Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and College of Arts and Science; she is also Affiliated Professor, Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations, Cambridge UK.  Her books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus;  The Meaning of the Bible: What the Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Old Testament Can Teach Us (co-authored with Douglas Knight); and The New Testament, Methods and Meanings (co-authored with Warren Carter).  Her most recent volume is Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi.

EASTER MORNING - John 20:1-9     Last night, with our Easter fire burning brightly in the midst of the darkness of the night, in the midst in the darkness of the tomb in which Jesus was buried after his death on the cross, we started our celebration of Christ’s resurrection. The Easter Vigil mass and our masses on Easter Sunday rejoice in the risen Christ. Today is not about the memories or ideals or profound thoughts that are indeed contained in the Gospel message this morning.  Rather, our celebration on this Easter morning

is about Jesus, alive and present to us and loving us from his heart.  In our Easter faith, we really do encounter Jesus, not just a message from him, not just a doctrine inspired by him, not just the ethics of justice and love that he proclaimed. It is Jesus himself in whom we rejoice this morning. Jesus gave us his body and blood, telling us to do this in remembrance of him. In the shadow of the empty tomb that the disciples find on Easter morning, in the light of our resurrected Lord, we are called to remember, we are called to proclaim, we are called to live the Gospel message that he left behind. Fr.
