Majority of Hillsborough CountyOffices to Close on January 19

The majority of Hillsborough County offices and facilities will beclosed on Monday, January 19, in observance of the Martin LutherKing Jr. federal holiday.

Closed facilities include the administrative offices of Countygovernment, all libraries, recreation centers, Head Start/Early HeadStart centers, and senior centers and nutrition sites.

Collection of garbage, recyclables, and yard waste will continue ona normal Monday schedule in the unincorporated HillsboroughCounty Solid Waste Service area. The service area includes TampaPalms, Hunter’s Green, and New Tampa. All disposal facilities willalso be open.

Additional Hillsborough County facilities that will be closed onMartin Luther King Jr. Day include:

• The Pet Resource Center. A limited number of animal safety andenforcement officers will be on duty for emergencies only via themain number at (813) 744-5660.

• Fire Rescue Administration and the Fire Marshal’s Office. Allemergency services will continue without interruption.

• Hillsborough County’s Information and Service Center line, (813)272-5900.

• All County recreation centers, skate parks, the Bakas EquestrianCenter, and the administrative offices of the Parks, Recreation andConservation Department.

• The Sunshine Line transportation service will not operate.

• All Social Services Community Resource Centers.

The Book of Mormon Returns to Tampa on January 20 by Popular Demand

Back by popular demand, The Book of Mormon is scheduled to return to Tampa for a limited engagement January 20 -February 1, 2015. The Book of Mormon is part of the Bank of America Best of Broadway Tampa Bay season.

The Book of Mormon features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. Parker and Stoneare the four-time Emmy Award-winning creators of the landmark animated series, South Park. Tony Award-winnerLopez is co-creator of the long-running hit musical comedy, Avenue Q. The musical is choreographed by Tony Award-winner Casey Nicholaw (Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone) and is directed by Nicholaw and Parker.

County to Require Registration ofForeclosed Townhomes, Condos

Hillsborough County Commissioners have increased their efforts tokeep neighborhoods clean and attractive by voting to expand theCounty’s abandoned property registration program to includetownhomes, condominiums, and similar units.

The County created the registry in 2009, when the housing marketbust increased the amount of vacant homes, neglected properties, andunkempt yards. By ordinance, mortgagees must annually register allproperties that are in the process of foreclosure in unincorporatedHillsborough County.

The registry gives Code Enforcement investigators invaluablecontact information to clean up neighborhoods and resolve chroniccases. Approximately 32,800 properties are currently listed on the registry.

The County previously exempted condominiums, townhomes, andother individually-owned units in common-interest communitiesfrom the registry requirement because exterior maintenance in thesecommunities is often managed by associations. However, accordingto Code Enforcement officials, there are some abandoned townhomesand condos that aren’t being maintained. These properties canbecome nuisances for neighbors, and cause Code Enforcement toclean up the problems.

Mortgagees can register abandoned property at www.HillsboroughCounty.org/Code by clicking on the Abandoned Property Registrationslink. There is a $200 registration fee per property.

Residents can also report a vacant property at the same link.

Ferguson Hall toWelcome Black Violin on January 30

Straz Center for the Performing Arts will present BlackViolin on Friday, January 30, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., in FergusonHall. Black Violin is sponsored in part by the Tampa Bay Times.

It’s hard to think of another African-American violinist tomake their mark in popular music, so classically trained SouthFlorida twosome, Wilner “Wil B” Baptiste and Kevin “KevMarcus” Sylvester, who go by the name Black Violin are awelcome revelation for their ability to meld highbrow and popculture, “Brandenburg” and “breakdown,” into a single genre-busting act. The band’s most recent album, ClassicallyTrained, is the follow-up to their 2007 self-titled debut on theirown Di-Versatile Music Group label, which is as good anintroduction to their groundbreaking blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B and bluegrass.

Wil B and Kev Marcus are classically trained viola andviolin players who first met playing in the high schoolorchestra in Fort Lauderdale. They’ve since fused the hip-hopand classical genres in a groundbreaking collaboration that has seen them play their music for everybody from the troopsin Iraq to both of President Obama’s Inaugural Balls. The pair also headlined 40 shows in two stints at the New VictoryTheater on Broadway. They’ve wowed audiences at the Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theatre, accompanied Alicia Keys’performance of “Karma” at the 2004 Billboard Awards and appeared with Gym Class Heroes and Fall Out Boy’s PatrickStump playing the hit song, “Stereo Hearts,” for VH1’s Unplugged.

Since starting Black Violin a decade ago – named after an album by preeminent African-American swing era jazzviolinist Stuff Smitm – Wil B and Kev have performed an average of 200 shows a year in 49 states and 36 countries asfar away as Dubai, Prague and South Africa. The pair has played with the likes of Linkin Park member Mike Shinoda’sFort Minor, while opening for Fat Joe, Akon and the Wu-Tang Clan. Individually and together, Black Violin hascollaborated with the likes of P. Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin and The Eagles.Kev supplied strings for a track on Lupe Fiasco’s Grammy-nominated Food & Liquor 2 album, and appeared on theMeek Mill cut “Maybach Curtains” with John Legend, Rick Ross and Nas. Wil and Kev also scored an episode of CSI:New York, adapting the finale of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly for an on-screen murder.

A laugh-out-loud funny tale of gender confusion in which after being shipwreckedin a storm and losing her brother , a girl disguises herself as a man to be near the countshe adores only to be pursued by the woman he loves. Meanwhile, one householdcranks up the mischief-making by tricking the stuffy steward into believing hismistress has fallen for him. This treasured comedy brims with wild infatuations,swooning serenades, drunken high-jinks, and beloved characters.

Twelfth Night features an exquisite cast of some of the best performers in theregion: Ned Averill-Snell (Sir Toby Belch,) Giles Davies (Malvolio), Jason VaughanEvans (Fabian), Roxanne Fay (Feste), Edward Gomez (Valentine), Chris Holcom(Orsino), Nick Hoop (Sebastian), Jamie Jones (Sir Andrew Aguecheek), Michael C. This production is set against the backdrop of Ybor City in 1926. This choice makes a lot of sense for director Jenkins.“I think the late-night carousing, excessive wealth and stunning beauty all occurring under the scrutiny of a puritanicalfigure works so well here for a number of reasons. 1926 was not only during Prohibition but also the Depression, whichYbor largely avoided as it was booming in that time. Ybor, like Shakespeare’s imaginary locale Illyria, was (and still is,really) a world unto itself. Also, this play begins with Viola being shipwrecked in an unknown land. In Sep. of 1926Florida was pounded by one of the most devastating hurricanes in the state’s history. This choice will flavor the look ofthe set and costumes most obviously, but it’s also allowing us to construct some really interesting back stories meshingShakespeare’s words against this rich historical period.”

Jobsite is using a newly edited version of the text commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2007 developedby Jonathan Bate and Eric Rasmussen from the first folio. This edition of the text has been referred to as remarkable andsuperb by Shakespeare scholars and theater professionals and Jobsite is presenting this version of the text as-is. “We justwant to be clear that we’re not adapting this play into modern or updated language in any way or abridging it for a zippierruntime. We’ve done Shakespeare in a variety of ways over the years and we just want to be direct with what we aredoing,” adds Jenkins.

Twelfth Night opens to the general public runs through February1. Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. andSunday at 4 p.m. Tickets are $28. Fletcher Safety ImprovementsRecognized as OutstandingTransportation Project of the Year

Hillsborough County was recognized January 13 with the 2014Project of the Year Award by the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Instituteof Transportation Engineers (TBITE) for the Fletcher AvenueComplete Streets project. This award recognizes an outstandingtransportation project that has applied innovative techniques andcompleted successful implementation in the previous year. A TBITErepresentative made the announcement and presented award plaquesto Hillsborough County and the Florida Department ofTransportation (FDOT) staff at the FDOT Fifth Annual District 7Safety Summit in Tampa.

Fletcher Avenue between Nebraska Avenue and 50th Street wasidentified as an area of high pedestrian use and high pedestrian crashrates, with more than 1,400 pedestrians crossing Fletcher Avenue eachday. Construction of the $5 million Complete Streets project to re-engineer the road for pedestrian and bicyclist safety was completed inlate 2014, with the help of $3 million in Federal HighwayAdministration safety funds through the FDOT.

Several innovative approaches were used in designing the safetyimprovements along Fletcher Avenue, including a first-of-its-kindoverhead rapid flashing beacon installation at pedestrian crossings.Additionally, all of the mid-block crossings have energy efficientLED street lighting in the medians — a first in Hillsborough County.

Other safety improvements include raised concrete pedestrianrefuge islands, raised concrete traffic separators, repaired andadditional sidewalks, upgraded handicap access ramps at crossingsand intersections, and a reduced speed limit of 35 miles per hour. Anadditional 1.5 miles of marked bicycle lanes also created a 3-milecontinuous segment along Fletcher Avenue between Nebraska Avenueand 50th Street.

Hillsborough County is educating area residents andcommuters about the project through a collaborative grass-rootscampaign with Walk-Wise Tampa Bay, FDOT, and theHillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organization. Zap Mama and Antibalas to Perform in Tampa

The Straz Center for the Performing Arts will present Zap Mama and Antibalason Thursday, January 22, 2015, at 8 p.m., in Ferguson Hall.

In their first ever collaboration, Zap Mama and Afrobeat Brooklyn-based heroesAntibalas — veterans and forerunners of the Afrobeat scene credited with bringingwidespread awareness of Fela music to America mix the best of African-inspiredbeats with Zap Mama’s soul-sonic vocal style. This cross-pollination of forcespromises to be a frenzy that forges a new experience in the vitality of Afro music.

Along with a small ensemble of a cappella singers, Zap Mama is the Belgian-Congolese singer Marie Daulne, and like the painters whose work she studied atart college, her career can be divided into a series of clearly-defined periods. Shestarted out forming the polyphonic vocal quintet Zap Mama, an all-girl groupwho enjoyed considerable international success. But Daulne then went on to dropher a cappella ‘sisters’ and develop more of an urban sound, experimenting with

rap and American soul influences in her work. Her eighth album, Flash to the Present, was released in 2013. Antibalas is a Brooklyn-based Afrobeat band that is modeled after Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri’s

Hillsborough County ConsumerProtection Agency Advises CyberSecurity Measures Targeting the U.S. Healthcare Industry

Hillsborough County Consumer Protection Agency advisesresidents to be extra vigilant with their medical information. Cyber-attacks have been occurring for years, but attacks targeting our healthcare information are expected to rise due to the value of our medicalinformation being worth 10 times more than credit card informationon the black market. Cyber criminals receive $20 for health insuranceinformation compared to $1 or $2 for credit card numbers. Someexperts say the value of someone’s medical identity can even be ashigh as 50 times that of a person’s financial identity because it doesn’tperish like a credit card number that can be canceled.

Security loop holes at hospitals, health care providers, and evenpharmaceutical companies have made it much easier than in the pastfor these attackers to be successful, especially when the attackers areimproving on their methods. Some criminals use the information toimpersonate patients with diseases in order to obtain prescriptionsfor controlled substances in addition to financial fraud. Victims areoften unaware for months or years that their information has beencompromised. Attackers will attempt to use your identity formedical care or services and the damage can generate changes toyour health records that cannot only pose a risk to you but can bedifficult to correct.

• The World Privacy Forum suggests you take the followingpreventive steps:

• Closely monitor any “Explanation of Benefits” sent by a public orprivate health insurer. Be on the look-out for service charges,office visits, or medical equipment you did not receive or buy.

• Annually, request a listing of benefits paid in your name fromyour health insurers. Watch for changes to your billing addressand phone number.

• Request a copy of current medical files from each health careprovider. Consider making the request each time you go to thedoctor.

• Correct erroneous and false information in your file. The worldPrivacy Forum maintains an FAQ with sample letters and moredetails for victims.

• If you are a victim of medical identity theft, file a police report.You may need the police report for health care providers andinsurance companies.

• Keep an eye on your credit report. Remove bad records from yourcredit file by filing a police report and sending it to the collectionagency.

County Animal Shelter Reopens The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center, the County’s

public animal shelter and the First Place for Pets, has reopened thefacility following a termite tenting of the entire building. Normalshelter hours and all operations have resumed.

Shelter officials credit the successful completion of the one-timeproject to the assistance of partners including the American Societyfor the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the FloridaDisaster Animal Response Team (FL-DART), the Florida StateAnimal Response Coalition (FL-SARC), the University of FloridaMaddie’s Shelter Medicine Program, the Hillsborough CommunityCollege Veterinary Technology Program, the Hillsborough CountySheriff’s Office, and the dedicated force of citizen volunteers at thePet Resource Center.

While all animals have been returned to their indoor kennels,donations of clean towels and fleece blankets are still needed inanticipation of cold temperatures. The shelter’s wish list is availableat HillsboroughCounty.org/Pets under the Volunteer and Donate tab.

The Pet Resource Center offers the following care tips duringextreme temperatures:

• Take pets indoors whenever possible; very young and very oldpets are particularly at risk.

The Commodores to Headline GasparillaCharity Concert with Atlanta RhythmSection and Daniel P. Marshall as Openers

EventFest, Inc. and Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla recently announced that The Commodores will headline theGasparilla Charity Concert and Pre-Invasion Celebration on January 30, 2015 in Tampa. This is the kick-off to theSeminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest weekend. The event will take place in downtown Tampa’s Curtis HixonWaterfront Park and gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with live music starting at 6 p.m.

Atlanta Rhythm Section has been confirmed as opener for The Commodores, with Daniel B. Marshall returning tothe Gasparilla Pirate Fest stage. The Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla’s Gasparilla Community Fund and the HumaneSociety of Tampa will receive proceeds from this year’s Charity Concert.

“We are delighted to host The Commodores, Atlanta Rhythm Section and Daniel B Marshall for our inauguralGasparilla Charity Concert & Pre-Invasion Celebration, presented by Budweiser on January 30” said Darrell Stefany,President of EventFest and Project Manager for Gasparilla Pirate Fest (GPF). “Our goal was to create a memorable Pre-Invasion party celebration and literally light-up Friday night as we prepare for Tampa’s 100th Gasparilla Invasion andParade on Saturday” Stefany added.

Following the Gasparilla Parade of the Pirates on Saturday, the celebration continues at official Gasparilla PartyHeadquarters that will offer Gasparilla specials and entertainment.

The Humane Society of Tampa will host a beer garden at Curtis HixonWaterfront Park for both Friday’s Concert as well as Saturday for the Invasion and Parade.

Live entertainment will be featured on the Gasparilla Invasion Stage in MacDill Park in downtown Tampa both beforeand after the parade on Saturday. The Invasion stage is presented by Telemundo and will feature the Hot Salsa soundsof Sol Caribe.

Gasparilla Pirate FestThe 2015 Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest is scheduled Friday and Saturday, January 30 and 31, 2015, and

will feature the 100th Gasparilla Invasion and Parade of the Pirates.

Gasparilla Invasion BrunchThe Gasparilla Invasion Brunch at the Tampa Convention Center provides the best view of the historic Gasparilla

Invasion, as the pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla sail up Seddon Channel aboard the Jose Gasparilla, and docktableside at 1 p.m. The brunch, includes live entertainment, a buffet brunch with cash bar and reserved table seating.Tickets are available on-line (www.GasparillaTreasures.com) or by phone (813) 251-8844.

Gasparilla Parade of the PiratesFollowing another successful invasion by the pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, the focus shifts to Bayshore

Boulevard, where a victory parade begins at 2 p.m. at Bay to Bay and Bayshore. The 4.5 mile Gasparilla Parade of thePirates, presented by Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, winds its way along Hillsborough Bay into downtown Tampa, withover 140 units featuring 103 floats, three marching bands and over 50 participating krewes.

The Gasparilla Parade of the Pirates will travel from Bayshore into downtown Tampa. The Parade will cross intodowntown over the Brorein Street bridge, turn north on Ashley Drive, and end at Cass Street and Ashley Drive in theheart of the Cultural Arts District in downtown Tampa.

Gasparilla Pirate Fest Street FestivalGasparilla Pirate Fest begins on Friday, January 30, 2015 with a Gasparilla Charity Concert. This fun-filled

celebration will kick-off festivities with a variety of live entertainment in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Following theParade, entertainment will continue at Official Gasparilla Party Headquarters from Bay to Bay to Ybor City and at theultimate Gasparilla Party Headquarters — the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino - Tampa.

An additional Latin themed entertainment stage is scheduled to be located downtown pre parade in MacDill Park, onthe west side of Ashley Drive along the river between Whiting and Jackson Streets. Sol Caribe will provide hot salsasounds before and after the parade.

The Straz Center for the Performing Arts presentsPhotographer Steve Winter’s On the Trail of Big Cats onTuesday, January 20, 2015, at 7 p.m. in Ferguson Hall, asthe first installment in the fifth season of the NationalGeographic Live! speaker series Funded in part by The JoyMcCann Foundation. The series showcases the writers,photographers, filmmakers, scientists, explorers andadventurers who bring the world home.

Winter has been stalked by jaguars in Brazil, charged bya grizzly in Siberia and trapped in quicksand in the world’slargest tiger reserve in Myanmar. He’s flown over eruptingvolcanoes and visited isolated villages where residents hadnever before seen a blond foreigner – or a camera.

Growing up in Indiana, Winter dreamed of traveling theworld as a photographer for National Geographic. His firstcamera was a gift from his father on his seventh birthday.Over the next few years, Winter’s dad taught him the basicsof photography.

After graduating from the Academy of Art and theUniversity of San Francisco, Winter signed on as aphotojournalist for Black Star Photo Agency. Since then, he has produced stories for GEO, Time, Newsweek, Fortune,Natural History, Audubon, BusinessWeek, Scientific American and Stern, among other publications. His nonprofit andcommercial clients include UNICEF, Merck Pharmaceuticals, Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation and others.

In 1991, Winter began shooting for the National Geographic Society. He has covered many subjects for NationalGeographic magazine, including Cuba, Russia’s giant Kamchatka bears, tigers in Myanmar’s Hukawng Valley and lifealong Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River.

Please Put Waste in Its PlaceHillsborough County Public Works is putting an emphasis on litter

prevention awareness by teaming up with the Florida Department ofTransportation (FDOT) and Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful to urgeresidents to take pride in our community. This year alone, more than18,000 volunteers removed more than 206,000 pounds of litter anddebris from local roads, land and waterways.

The harmful effects of litter include possibly polluting our localwaterways, lowering our property values, and tarnishing HillsboroughCounty’s overall natural beauty. Common litter sources range fromcigarette butts and other trash on our rights of way to fast foodcontainers, cups, bottles, and paper discarded in our neighborhoodsand parks.

As part of the awareness campaign, Hillsborough County launcheda new litter prevention webpage at www.HillsboroughCounty.org/CleanHC that includes information on reporting littering activity,litter laws and information about volunteer activities. The webpagealso includes new Put Waste in Its Place anti-litter videos, which arecurrently playing in local movie theaters and on cable tv networks.

The County has also teamed up with the FDOT statewide RoadsideLitter Prevention Education Media Campaign, Drive It Home - KeepOur Paradise Litter-Free, featuring professional and amateur athletesfrom a variety of sports. Countywide billboards and bus wraps, alongwith messages on a variety of local radio stations, support thecampaign to reduce the incidence of littering on Florida highways,promote pride in the beauty of Florida’s landscapes and educateFlorida motorists about the dangers and hazards of roadside litter.

To help stop the litter problem at its source by engaging residentsin grassroots environmental service and education, HillsboroughCounty has an on-going partnership with Keep Tampa Bay Beautifulto support road adoption programs and community clean up events.
