Rivals for an Empire
• In the 1750s, France was England’s greatest rival.
• France’s North American colony consisted mainly of fur trappers and frontiersmen.
• They wanted to exploit their territory economically rather than settle it.
• The French developed good relations with Native Americans through trading.
The War Begins
• French trappers expanded on English territory.
• The English sent soldiers to the frontier to protect its settlements.
• George Washington was involved in the first battle of the war at Fort Necessity.
Early French Victories
• The Indian alliance with the French helped in early battles.
• The French were successful early in the war because of their hit and run tactics.
• The British army was not used to this type of fighting.
The British Turn the Tide
• William Pitt, a new English leader, borrowed a lot of money to create a large army.
• With this large army, the English began defeating the French.
• The war ended in 1763.
Two Outcomes of the War

• England would engage in costly conflicts between settlers and Native Americans.
• The Proclamation of 1763 banned all settlement of colonists west of the Proclamation line.
