Today, Saint-Gobain is the world’s largest

building materials manufacturer, delivering

innovative and sustainable solutions for the

house of the future.

Thanks to our unique industrial experience,

which dates back to 1665, Saint-Gobain offers

an unrivalled portfolio of products, solutions

and services in the fields of energy and the

environment in each of the 64 countries where

we operate today.

The Asia-Pacific region has remained a priority

in Saint-Gobain’s international expansion

strategy since 1917, when the Group opened its

first site in Japan. In 2010, Saint-Gobain Asia-

Pacific covers 10 countries, with around 15,000

employees working at over 100 sites.

Driven by a policy of ongoing profitable growth,

the Saint-Gobain Group is constantly targeting

lead positions in the habitat and construction

markets, and in some related innovative

materials markets, in order to offer local

solutions tailored to the needs of both

emerging and developed countries.

Saint-Gobain has placed at the heart of its

strategy global preoccupations such as the

search for energy-saving solutions and the

reduction of CO2 emissions. Thanks to our

exceptional skills base, Saint-Gobain invests

a significant part of its sales in research and

development efforts: in 2009, for example,

around €400 million was devoted to the

search for new products.

Given our strategic positioning, we have

resolved to serve as a leading example in the

management of energy consumption, plant

emissions and energy performance in office

buildings. These commitments in favor of

responsible and sustainable development are in

line with Saint-Gobain’s Principles of Conduct

and Action, shared by our 190,000 employees.

Growing success

Asia-Pacific has long been a high priority in the international expansion of

Saint-Gobain, and the Group’s major sectors are present in the region. By

localizing the technical expertise and global materials experience of the Saint-

Gobain Group, we have created strong business and customer relationships,

and established our products and brand names in all the major markets.

With the region maturing as a manufacturing base and an enormous market

in its own right, our development is accelerating—not only in the several

markets with huge growth potential, but also in other Asia-Pacific countries

where our market positions are still well short of our potential. A key part

of our approach is establishing joint ventures with existing local partners,

and finding and developing technical and marketing synergies that allow all

parties to share in success on a broader stage.

Saint-Gobain employs about 15,000 people in the Asia-Pacific region with

its General Delegation headquarters in China. We have a major presence in

China, with about 10,000 people working in over 53 companies operating in

our major business sectors. Our presence in China is strongest in and around

Shanghai, but extends to Mudanjiang in the north, where we have a silicon

carbide (SiC) plant, to Guangzhou in the south, where we have a specialty

glass plant, and as far inland as Xining, where we have another SiC operation.

Saint-Gobain is actively pursuing further growth opportunities in China,

both through joint ventures and greenfield operations.

In Japan our nearly 850 employees work in building and automotive glass,

ceramics, plastics, crystals, abrasives, technical fabrics and insulation, supplying

leading industries with sophisticated products and technical services.

Saint-Gobain has had operations in South Korea for more than ten years.

Through a major partnership with Hankuk Glass Industries we are co-leader

in the nation’s flat glass industry, as well as in insulation, and the scope of

this partnership is now extending to new business development throughout

North East Asia and China.

Our operations in South-East Asia include plants in Thailand, Indonesia,

Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore, and in the Pacific region Saint-Gobain

has plants and sales offices throughout Australia and in New Zealand.

For nearly 350 years, Saint-Gobain has proven its ability to think, innovate

and grow. Our involvement in showcase projects such as Shanghai Stadium,

Beijing's National Center for the Performing Arts, and the Rodin Museum in

Seoul demonstrates our commitment to performing at the highest possible

standard in Asia. We are confident that the future is bright, both for the

Asia-Pacific region itself and our operations within it.

Japan is a global technology leader, with a record of creating and

perfecting technology in some of the world’s most competitive industries.

Many of these industries are customers of Saint-Gobain, and time and time

again we find that their approach to business matches our own. Like our

clients in Japan, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of technology

as we invent and refine products, and create new applications that have

a material effect on people’s lives.

Saint-Gobain in Japan

The Japanese market for technical materials is one of the most advanced in

the world. Not only are some of Saint-Gobain’s strongest competitors based

in Japan, but the nation’s industrial customers and end-users are also among

the most sophisticated to be found anywhere. They have a keen appetite for

creative improvement, and demand perfection—characteristics that we are

more than happy to oblige.

Saint-Gobain views Japan as a center of innovation as well as a large market

in itself. Our operations in the country include manufacturing, distribution,

and research in the Flat Glass, High-Performance Materials and Construction

Products business sectors, and since the 1970s we have been developing

our own operations or forming joint ventures with local partners. Through

these joint ventures we bring together complementary technologies and

distribution networks, with a focus on international customer relationships

and added-value manufacturing.

Flat GlassIn the architectural glass field, Saint-Gobain enjoys a strong position,

thanks to its experience dating back to the 17th century, and a wide range

of products that benefits both from Saint-Gobain’s strong technology

orientation and its permanent quest for design innovation. Many outstanding

architectural projects in Japan have benefited from the extreme transparency

of our extra-clear Diamant glass, the innovative selection of patterns offered

by our Master-glass and Decorglass series, or the refined touch of the Saint-

Just mouth-blown glass. Another noteworthy product is our self-cleaning

glass, Bioclean.

upstream production in integrated weaving for fabrics, veils and glass mesh

under the name Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics.

Vetrotex® has two production areas worldwide: one factory in Mexico,

mainly serving markets in the Americas; and a factory in the Czech Republic

for specialty products.

By relying on these modern, optimized factories, our objective in Technical

Fabrics is to develop high-end, competitive and innovative products in

cooperation with our clients, thus setting ourselves apart from an increasingly

Asia-centered competition in the area of commodity products.

Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics business is a world leader in both upstream

and downstream production, with around 20% market share. The company

has around 3,000 associates and 16 production sites throughout the world.

wool is a material used for a wide range of applications including thermal

insulation and acoustic insulation, and in a range of settings from equipment

casing to the interiors of residences, commercial buildings, plants, and offices.

Our production bases are the Tsuchiura and Akeno plants in Ibaraki Prefecture,

and Tarui plant in Gifu Prefecture.

The long relationship of cooperation between Saint-Gobain and MAG dates

back to 1974. Saint-Gobain assisted with the construction of MAG’s Akeno

plant, and Saint-Gobain’s technical cooperation in the area of TEL technology

helped MAG to reach a high level of technology. Recently, Saint-Gobain

production technology relating to glass wool with high heat resistance was

introduced at MAG.

We manufacture and supply products for residential applications in walls,

ceilings, floors, and roofs, and through our business line for non-residential

applications we manufacture and supply products for buildings, HVAC

(Heating, Hot Water, Ventilating, Air Conditioning) equipment, special

warehouses (minus zero, refrigerated, constant-temperature warehouses),

trains, ships, acoustic insulation, pipe insulation and the insulation of home

electrical appliances.

Glass wool is effective in global warming prevention. Approximately 30%

of Japan’s energy consumption is accounted for by the residential and

commercial sectors and of this, a further 70% of the energy consumption in

the residential sector is used in heating, air conditioning and the supply of hot

water. Decreasing this energy consumption will have an important impact on

the reduction of CO2 emissions, and therefore on preventing global warming.

The use of insulation will help Japanese households to curb their electricity

bills and reduce expenditures on power generation and electricity equipment.

Saint-Gobain and the environment:Making a material difference

As a leading industrial group we take our environmental responsibilities

seriously. We have clearly defined groupwide policies that cover everything

from site management to emissions, backed by specific programs through

which we are making tangible reductions in the impact of our business on

the environment.

Saint-Gobain is a major proponent of recycling. Group companies are using

an ever-increasing proportion of recycled glass, scrap metal and cast iron

among raw materials entering their furnaces, and we carefully analyze all

our manufacturing and recycling processes to identify opportunities for

further improvement.

The Saint-Gobain Group has made a commitment, in line with the timetable

set by the Kyoto protocol, to reduce CO2 emissions per ton of manufactured

product by more than 15% by 2010, against a 1990 baseline. Since 2005, our

Lapeyre group, part of the building distribution sector that purchases more

than 1.5 million cubic meters of timber per year, has undertaken to only use

wood from forests for which sustainable conservation is guaranteed.

Our approach to environmental issues goes beyond minimizing pollution from

our facilities. It also includes positive contributions to better environmental

performance through the development of “green” markets. We are actively

engaged in the efficient use of renewable energy sources such as solar and

wind power, and we take advantage of countless opportunities to build

environmentally friendly features into the thousands of our materials and

products that are used all around the world.

Universal values

The Saint-Gobain Group operates in 64 countries worldwide. This geographic

and cultural diversity contributes greatly to the innovation that drives our

multinational business, and it is underpinned by a set of common values that

guide us in whatever we do, and wherever in our network we do it. Our values

are: professional commitment; respect for others; integrity; loyalty; and

solidarity; and we strive to ensure that these values are reflected in the day-

to-day policies and actions of all management and staff.

Group policy also outlines principles for action. These principles govern the

activities of all management teams and employees in the exercise of their

professional responsibilities, and are defined as respect for the law, caring

for the environment, worker health and safety, and employee rights. Group

management undertakes awareness and training programs to promote

these principles across the Group, and branches and delegations report

regularly to the general management of the Group on how the principles

are being applied.

We firmly believe that our general principles of conduct and action are

essential to the success of the Group. We are confident that, guided by

these principles, we can continue to produce the sustainable development

and responsible growth that characterizes Saint-Gobain.
