2013 - Industry Survey“The Future of CTMS”
Introduction
Triumph have been consulting in the life sciences industry for more than 10 years and have been involved in the implementation of more than 15 CTMS during that time. During the last few years, Triumph have witnessed dramatic changes in the attitudes, approach and needs for CTMS. In order to ensure we remain focused on what the industry needs, we decided to conduct an industry wide survey to look at the expected trends in CTMS development and usage over the next two years.
We had responses from more than 40 separate businesses, split between Pharma and CRO, mostly medium or large in size. What became apparent very quickly is that CTMS are here to stay, but will take a different form, and play a very different role in the future than they have been in the last 5-10 years.
This slide deck presents the results of the survey and some lessons for those companies looking to evolve their CTMS to become a more valued and integral part of their business.

26-27 How do you derive metrics from your CTMS – now and in next 2 years?
1 – WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT CTMS STATUS?
Lesson in a tweet:
Most mid – large companies focused on CTMS maturity, not
acquisition
2 – HOW IMPORTANT IS CTMS TO YOUR BUSINESS?
Lesson in a tweet:
CTMS is not going away – we must however focus on
ensuring it is a value add tool, not a necessary evil
3 – WHAT ARE YOUR CTMS PLANS IN THE NEXT 2 YEARS?
Lesson in a tweet:
CTMS value will be driven by functional coverage and data
availability
4 – WHAT IS YOUR CTMS PLATFORM?
Lesson in a tweet:
Acceptance of ‘the cloud’ increasing significantly, but
companies still focusing on web access rather than mobile apps.
5 – CTMS / REPORTING / INTEGRATION BUDGET
Lesson in a tweet:
Budgets are still significant – but companies must drive
change through a well defined business case
6 – WHAT WOULD DETER YOU FROM USING A CTMS?
Lesson in a tweet:
The evolution and enhancement of CTMS needs
to be supported with appropriate resources, and stakeholder commitment
7 – WHAT FUNCTIONAL AREAS SHOULD CTMS SUPPORT?
Lesson in a tweet:
Business should focus on core functions first to get highest
value and early buy in. This will lead to modularisation
of CTMS over time
8 – CTMS INTEGRATION
Lesson in a tweet:
High value integrations already in place - EDC and IxR for
most businesses. Second wave will focus on
Doc Mgt / eTMF and PM
9 – REPORTING AND ANALYTICS
Lesson in a tweet:
Today’s decisions require data to be analysed from multiple sources. Value will be gained by defining a data mastering strategy ahead of integration
10 – HOW DO YOU TRAIN YOUR USERS?
Lesson in a tweet:
Drive from centralised to remote
(just in time) training – driving cost saving and efficacy
11 – BUSINESS PROCESS ALIGNMENT
Lesson in a tweet:
It’s the process, not the systems that drive value.
Systems must support business process, not vice versa
12 – USE OF METRICS
Lesson in a tweet:
Metrics remain vital, currently a strong desire to align with
industry standards
