Technology on its own will not transform learning – it is people, working with and exploiting technology who will bring about transformation in teaching and learning

We aim to involve all 3 today: learning – people - technology

Input from Campus Students

• What digital hardware do you know about and use?

mobile phonelaptopscamerasDVD playerMP3, ipodIphoneweb camsTV, radiosat navgaming machinesBlackberrymemory sticks

Page 9: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

What do you use digital hardware for?

• watch films

• play games

• research projects

• download

• email

• communication with friends MSM is the most common

Page 10: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

What web based technologies do you use?

• Social networking sites such as BEBO, Facebook, Profile Pic, High 5

• Youtube, Myspace,

• BLOGs WIKI

• MSN and others

• Discussion group and forums eg www.realformum.net

• Review sites

Page 11: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

What do you use web based technologies for?

• Communicate – informally MSN replaces the phone• Collaborate – working things out, arranging meetings and activities• Research – we think we can phrase a question, know how to use,

information literacy, work it out for themselves• Resources for courses, catch up when absent, podcasts video,

informal way of doing things• Producers - we can create our own content and make it available• Progress – see how we are doing• For students with disabilities ie Deaf

– Helps access– See person not disability– Web cams for signing

Page 12: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

How well are digital technologies used formally in learning at the campus?

• In some subjects we expect them to use• In most subjects we are expected to switch off mobile

phones• We only have access mainly to PC/Internet• We know there are issues around using other

technologies, for example: security• We know these technologies can involve students more

in their learning• We think that digital technologies are very useful tools to

support our learning and that more use could be made by the Campus of both digital and web-based technologies in our learning.

Page 13: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

What risks are you aware of about using digital technologies?• We are aware of the current issues around using

digital technologies such as identity theft• We know untrue and unpleasant things can be

said about you without your consent or knowledge

• We think we what to do when you find inappropriate

• Mainly IT students know more, but what about the rest of the students?

• Parents know less than we do.

How we got started

• Planning was key• Parents invited to

school• Insurance was vital• Worries

Page 19: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

First lessons

• Excitement

Page 20: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

Positive Aspects

• Behaviour Management• Use of music• On-Task • Different ways of

communicating – video, Bluetooth

• Note taking• Short, snappy tasks –

sentence level work

Page 21: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

Issues to consider

• Insurance• Memory cards• Short tasks and using as

a tool to support teaching not a way of replacing teaching

• Planning• Parental involvement• Size of screen• Pens

Page 22: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

Digital hardware

• Access to web technologies

• Communications

• Capturing

Page 23: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

Web based technologies• Web-based communities and hosted services

aim to facilitate creativity, collaboration and sharing between users. Eg:social-networking sites, wikis and blogs)

• In education this translates to importing and/or creating course materials, the delivery of course materials, on-line interactions between students and tutors, on-line tracking and assessment of students’ progress in a secure environment.

• This is the Virtual Learning Environment VLE (or MLE or Learning Platform)

Opportunities v Risks

• Digital technologies provide exciting, untapped opportunities for learning and teaching

• However, we also need to be aware of the risks

• Both the opportunities and the risks need to be managed

The Educational Agenda

• A plethora of documents and strategies, always concerned I’m going to miss the most crucial, focusing on 2:

• The QCA “Big Picture”• The DCSF “Harnessing Technology – next

generation learning 2008-20014”

Hot off the press – phase 2 of this key document

Transformation - the buzz word

What we are trying to achieve

In terms of curriculum aims

In terms of focus for learning

Page 30: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

http://thecampus.edublogs.org.uk

Transformation – the buzz word

How we organise learning

• The components, where learning can occur

• Approaches to learning

Page 31: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

http://thecampus.edublogs.org.uk

Harnessing Technology – next generation learning 2008-20014

• The aim of the next phase of the Strategy is to bring about a step-change in the way technology is used across the breadth of the education and skills system.

• The goal is to develop a system which exploits the benefits of technology for learning and delivers tangible and measurable improvements and outcomes.

Page 32: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

Harnessing Technology – next generation learning 2008-20014• Learners access learning resources and

support at any time and from anywhere

• Technology-supported learning helps build higher order skills

• Technology helps deliver more personalised services for learners

• All learners gain value including disadvantaged and vulnerable groups

Learner Entitlement Framework

Is tailored to meet the needs of learners of different ages in different contexts. This will need to encompass:

•personalised learning which reflects learners’ interests, preferred approaches, abilities and choices, and tailored access to materials and content

•access to online support and tuition, personal support from professionals

http://thecampus.edublogs.org.uk

Page 34: The future of Learning – being comfortable with technology?

Learner Entitlement Framework
