(near) Futureof User Interface

By Ramya Prajna S – December, 2008

Page 2: The Future Of User Interface

Smaller or Bigger

The size of the interface (display)

getting smaller (mobile phone) or getting BIGGER (table/wall) ?

Page 3: The Future Of User Interface

Smaller

Cursor vs No Cursor (highlight)

When the size is getting smaller…

It’ll control by cursor or just highlight (like there were no mouse around) ??

Page 4: The Future Of User Interface

Smaller

More Image vs More Text

Speed of mobile connection gone wild…

It could be more image (or even videos content) …or…

Just stay focus on function as text information.

Page 5: The Future Of User Interface

Smaller

More Design vs Less Design

With the minimum size of display, but high-speed mobile connection…

The Design will become as good as we seen on desktop (and the user interface become better) …or…

It doesn’t need the ‘design’, the information still stand for the first (and only) priority.

Page 6: The Future Of User Interface

BiggerSingle Cursor vs Multi Cursor

Most people get introduced with the fact that a mouse comes one package with the computer it self.

Then they only know computer with single cursor.

But Jeff Han (Perspective Pixel) or Microsoft Surface show us another possibilities.

What if there are multiple mouse in one single computer? What if there are multi cursor (or controller) in one display?

Page 7: The Future Of User Interface

BiggerVertical Scroll vs Horizontal Scroll

Bigger space can fit more content…

A lot of content in one page can goesVertically or Horizontally.

Page 8: The Future Of User Interface

Bigger

‘Boxed’ Layout vs Free Space Layout

The whole display area is the active area…

The place holding a content will stay on Boxed (Window style)

…or…

Each element of content will stand for it self and the layout is free to modify.

Page 9: The Future Of User Interface

“The History repeat it self”

• Book Page = Web PageTerminology of Book Page used for Web Page

Page 10: The Future Of User Interface

“The History repeat it self”

• Book Page = Web Page• Paper Scroll = Page Scroll

It so obvious that scroll goes for any long format in any century.

Page 11: The Future Of User Interface

“The History repeat it self”

• Book Page = Web Page• Paper Scroll = Page Scroll• Stretch = Resize

From time to time people stretch out thing to resize it (bigger or wider)

Page 12: The Future Of User Interface

“The History repeat it self”

• Book Page = Web Page• Paper Scroll = Page Scroll• Stretch = Resize• Twisting = Rotate

• Etcv

To make a rotation it always need a pivot point and direction of the

rotation.

there are still many thing that work based on everyday stuff.

Page 13: The Future Of User Interface

Future

• Virtual Keyboard

Though it is awkward to use on screen keyboard

because there isn’t bounce motion from the pad…

…but we have to get use to it because the area will need more display (and

the keyboard).

Page 14: The Future Of User Interface

Future

• Multi-Touch

Using multi controller in one screen give effectiveness.

Collaboration of more than one finger...

Collaboration of more than one hand…

Collaboration of more than one person…

It’s century of collaboration (and start it with web 2.0).

Page 15: The Future Of User Interface

Future

• Revolution of Ergonomic

Where are the display? At the table? On the wall?

So how the position of using computer? Sit straight or move

forward to the table… like the old days when we’re reading the book

on the library.Or in standing position?

Right-Handed? Left-Handed? It doesn’t matter, both hand work

functionally.

Future

• Revolution of User Interface

Window – Button – Click – Drag – Highlight – Copy - Cut – Paste - …

“Plug n Play” is sound very lame, could it be “Put n Play”.

It will never go the same.

How ‘bout…

Notebook with both display and active interaction area, at lid and

keyboard area.

Public computer is just a long wall.

Your table is your computer.

And many thing will be change.
