Introducing Rene BatenburgGems new National Sales ManagerHi Rene, you’re now 1 month into your new position as Sales Manager for Gem, what are your thoughts so far? Previously; as a vendor, I had been impressed with the setupat Gem. Now having had the opportunity to get to know mynew colleagues and to be part of this organisation, I amenthusiastic about my new position and the challengesahead. Of course there is always room for improvement and I can use my experience actively in the process.

What was your first role? Have you always been on thedestined for a career in sales?My first sales role was as an Account Manager at Croky Chips(United Biscuits) in the Netherlands. Yes, my sales careerstarted early. Even on holiday as a child, I sold usednewspapers and magazines in the holiday park at the side ofthe road. I asked neighbours if they had finished reading andsold them to people heading back to their mobile homes inthe late afternoon. You could say that my desire to sell startedthen and has developed over the years to where I’m now.

How will your past experience help Gem to evolve andexpand within the retail channel?With 23 years’ experience of distribution and as a vendor,I strongly believe I am the ideal intermediate between both worlds. By listening to our retailers, understanding theirneeds, finding opportunities; that, together with the fantastic Gem portfolio of brands, should be a win-win situation for everyone.

Describe yourself in 3 words…Dutch, bold and very ambitious.

If you had to host a dinner party and could inviteanyone, who would you invite and why? Normally, I would say a few names and be done. However,after watching the closing ceremony of London 2012 OlympicGames, I would say that that would be my ideal dinner party,albeit on a large scale. Such an amazing line up of Britishartists, together with a fantastic show and audience… andyes, I would like my table in the middle of the stadium please!
