CONCEPTGALLERY GARDEN

Cool and sophisticated. For Paul these are the key words that sum up a gallery garden.

It is a grown up place to entertain and to complete a design conscious home and lifestyle. The planting is subtle but holds your eye year round whilst hard landscaping details join the whole scheme together in an elegant fashion.

IN CREATING THE BRADSTONE GALLERY GARDEN PAUL HAS TAKEN INSPIRATION FROM THE WORLD OF MODERN ART, SCULPTURE AND LAND ART.

The garden is designed as a modern open space that can be used for entertaining, outdoor cookery and relaxing. It’s a space that can be highly personalised and made truly bespoke.

Land art can often be inspiring and make you consider spaces differently. Paul uses the idea of land art in the garden and created spaces for you to put your pieces in.

Gallery gardens tantalise the viewer with partially obscured views, and in this garden Paul has designed an open screen precisely for this purpose.

Architectural form is a great stimulus for creating design ideas and galleries are inherently ‘designed’ spaces.

Open areas are an important element to galleries and this garden is no different. Two open spaces allow for entertaining and natural progression from area to area within the design.

Bold, modern, art painting directly inspired Paul to use Bradstone’s paving to create a blended area between two distinct terraces. It’s a great way to add a layer of bespoke detail to your garden.

If you have existing sculpture pieces then feel free to pull them into this design to make it personal to you.

PLANNING YOUR DESIGN GALLERY GARDEN

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A GARDEN DESIGN IS MAKING THE PLAN WORK FOR YOUR SPACE

Not only the layout and size but how plants and accessories such as furniture and sculpture will link in.

The size of your garden is not crucial but before you start measure the space you have and draw over our guide template. This garden has been designed slightly differently in that the assumed space is longer than it is wide.

Two paved areas link directly to the kitchen and sitting room doors on Paul’s design but if you only have one door at the rear of your house do not worry, the second terrace can always back onto a feature wall or hedge.

The most important elements in this garden are the two terraces, and ensuring there is enough space for any desired furniture and the figure of 8 lawn which sweeps through the garden creating the two areas. If you work these elements out first everything else can be connected from there.

Remember the lawn is away from the house and raised beds will border the terrace that opens on to it. Apart from this the width of your lawns and terraces can vary to suit and if your garden is longer than is it wide simple turn the lawn length ways and reduce the two terraces to one single space.

RAISED BEDSRaised beds enclose the smaller second terrace making a great ‘grow your own’ space for exotic and expensive to purchase goodies such as eastern veg and fruits.

1

LAWNS Wide curved lawns in a figure of 8 creates a feeling of space.2

PAVED AREAS Terraces for people to sit and entertain.3

SQUARED POSTS Painted upright squared posts create an open screen that both tantalises with a partially obscured view and disappears when looked at from different angles.

Smooth Natural Sandstone paving

This is used to make the first terrace and also to create two stylish raised beds in the garden. The paving is cut into strips to use as a modern coping stone which also doubles as an informal perch for visitors to rest on. For a simpler design, replace the raised beds with hedges to maintain the sense of enclosure.

A simpler option to building raised beds, but one that will give you a similar effect as far as creating a boundary to your Smooth Natural Sandstone patio area, is to plant hedges.

Use a hedging plant that will give you good structure such as Ilex or Yew and, if you want to acheive a more immediate effect, buy plants that are more mature. Simply plant these in the area where the raised beds would have been built and let them grow.

As they grow, simply keep them neatly trimmed and they will form a wonderful green backdrop to your patio and act as a gateway to your lawn in exactly the same way as the raised beds do in the other option.

Most of the areas in this garden are easy to replicate on a DIY basis however, Paul suggests building raised beds that can then be planted with herbs and other ‘grow your own’ planting.

Getting these beds built can be quite a skilled job. Ideally you would build the structure of the raised bed from concrete blocks up to the required height. You then need to apply a render to the blocks to give them a flat but slightly textured finish. The tops of the beds are then finished with coping stones that are produced by cutting down pieces of Smooth Natural Sandstone paving with a piece of stone cutting equipment. If you want this look to your gallery garden but need help producing these beds. Why not contact your local Bradstone Assured installer.

PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION... DIY INSTALLATION...

www.bradstone.com/assuredIf you want this look but don’t want to do it yourself visit:

Don’t worry if your garden does not exactly match our size of 7m x 5m. This garden like all of the Bradstone Design gardens is easy to adapt. The main feature of this garden is the central entertaining terrace. This needs to be sited off set but roughly in the centre of the garden area. If your garden is wide and thin you may need to create wider planting borders or consider turning the design around the other way and creating a strong vista from your garden’s longest aspects.

A smaller terrace by the house is also important, remember these two terraces must be different sizes with the terrace nearest the house being smaller than the other. As long as you keep this in mind feel free to play with the size ratios to suit your own garden. If your garden is an irregular shape follow the advice above and think carefully about creating visual illusions using the ribbon walls to trick the eye into losing the shape of the garden.

Remember trees and planting will also help!

SUGGESTED PLAN GALLERY GARDEN

09

THIS GARDEN IS INSPIRED BY THE CRISP MODERN OPEN SPACES THAT MAKE UP GALLERIES.

Partially obscured views and sculptural planting will help bring this feeling to life. Textures are really important and by contrasting Granite and Smooth Sandstone paving Paul has echoed the glossy and more coarsely

texture foliage plants used in the planting.

BORDER PLANTS

In the Gallery Garden the bulk of the planting is created from evergreen shrubs. This creates waves of solid form providing year round interest and visual colour.

Remember to plant your shrubs as I have in bold clumps where each types character is allowed to develop and shine.

TREES In this garden Paul has used Betula utilis var. jacquemontii ‘Grayswood Ghost’ for its wonderful silvery bark and the evergreen Maytenus boaria which has delicate open foliage allowing light in whilst creating seclusion.

Using a solitary evergreen to mask or obscure an overlooking window will help provide a sense of seclusion. Cluster deciduous birch together at the heart of the garden to create depth.

Bright colours and resins are very contemporary and durable.

Night lights are an inexpensive way to add atmosphere to the garden. If your terrace doors open on to the garden you can sit inside and enjoy them twinkling away in the garden.

Stainless steel is a bold choice to create that modern feel, these strap chairs make a real statement.

Choose bold patterns and strongly coloured fabrics for cushions and throws as a contrast to the principally green foliage backdrop of the garden.

The lawn in the garden is generous, so why not stretch out and enjoy lazy summer days.

Don’t forget, use your raised beds to grow herbs and salad items and you could enjoy the fresh fruits of your labour in salads, sandwiches and BBQs.
