CVMC At The MCA

“Buckeye Mustang

National”

Columbus, Ohio

June 20 -22, 2008

Four CVMC members made the trek to Columbus, Ohio for the “Buckeye Mustang National”. Three of us brought Mustangs and we all helped to judge the show. This show is the only one I have known to sellout about two months before the show.

The trip up and back was uneventful and the weather was great. We did have a thunderstorm after the show on Saturday.

We all got our Mustangs as shiny as possible for the show of course some people had extra help (grin).

Of course as usual there was a fantastic assortment of beautiful Mustangs at the show. They came from all over like Kansas, Texas, Florida, Missouri, Virginia and Canada to name a few places.

We all had a great time and I would like to extend my congratulations to Kathy McWilliams and Dave Dickey for bringing home the hardware.

News From The

Ford likely to build 2011

Focus at two plants

By Amy Wilson

Automotive News; June 23,

2008 - 12:01 am EST DETROIT — When Ford Motor Co. introduces a European-developed Ford Focus in late 2010, it is likely to produce the U.S. model in two plants. The 2011 Focus probably will be built in Wayne, Mich., and Louisville, Ky., said industry sources familiar with Ford's product plans. Ford makes the current Focus only at the Wayne factory. The Louisville plant currently makes the Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs. But small cars are hot, and Ford is selling all the Focuses it can produce. Last Friday, Ford ramped up capacity for the small car for the third time this year. The automaker is adding a third shift to the plant's paint and body shops. It is speeding up the assembly line, which runs on two shifts already on overtime. With the changes, Ford expects to be able to produce 280,000 units of Focus annually. The Focus had sales of 173,213 in 2007. Focus sales are up 35.7 percent in 2008. "We view the move to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles as permanent, and we are responding to customer demand," Ford CEO Alan Mulally said a statement Friday. That demand sets up a good prognosis for the 2011 Focus. Ford confirmed Friday that sedan and five-door hatchback versions of the European-developed Focus will go into production in North America in late 2010.

The new model is expected to be assembled alongside other small-car variants such as the C-Max crossover, sources said. Ford already sells the C-Max in Europe and could build it in Wayne beginning in 2011, the sources said. The next Focus will arrive just three years after a re-engineered and restyled model went on sale in 2007. That quick replacement wasn't a reaction to $4-a-gallon gasoline. Ford has been planning it for more than a year as part of Mulally's strategy to share vehicles globally. That 2011 Focus will be largely common with models sold in Europe, South America and Asia. Ford said last week that the global Focus will have "excellent" fuel economy, achieved through new direct-injection engine technology and a new six-speed transmission.

BRIAN WOLFE NAMED

NEW DIR. OF FORD

RACING TECH

6/26/2008

DAN DAVIS TO RETIRE AUG. 1

Dearborn, Mich. — Brian Wolfe, a 26-year Ford veteran who has held a series of management positions within Ford’s powertrain operations, has been named the new director of Ford Racing

Technology, the company announced today. Wolfe will replace Dan Davis, who has overseen the company’s racing efforts the past 11 years. Davis will retire after 32 years with the company on Aug. 1. “Dan has done a great job for the company and its racing program, and he’s going to be a tough act to follow,” said Wolfe. “I look forward to the challenge of taking the program forward and continuing the record of success he brought to us.” Wolfe, 47, has been director, Powertrain Calibration and Controls, Product Development, since 2002. In his most recent job, Wolfe had global responsibility for all powertrain computer control software applications and powertrain calibration, including drivability and emissions. He began his career at Ford Motor Company in 1982 and has held various positions within Ford’s powertrain development area, including a stint as manager of Ford’s Advanced Engine Group for North America, where he helped oversee the development of the Aston Martin V-12 engine. Wolfe received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from University of Michigan-Dearborn. He’s an avid amateur drag racer and still owns the 1969 Fairlane CobraJet he bought at age 15. Wolfe lives in Plymouth, Mich. He and his wife, Nancy, have two daughters and a son. “For me, a kid from Michigan whose father idolized Henry Ford, there was never any doubt where I was going to work,” Wolfe said. “To have this opportunity now to take the racing program forward is a dream come true.” Under Davis’ leadership of Ford Racing Technology, the company captured three NASCAR Sprint Cup driver’s titles and four manufacturer’s titles. In addition, he helped with the formation of Roush-Yates Engines, the premier engine supplier to Ford

NASCAR, sports car and USAC racing programs. In NHRA, the company captured eight consecutive Funny Car championships, and Davis led development of the new Ford BOSS 500 nitro engine, the first new nitro engine in drag racing the past 40 years. Davis also led major safety initiatives in both Champ Car racing and NHRA, where use of Ford Blue Box data recorders is now mandatory. He also led a resurgence of Ford customer programs in road racing, where the Ford Mustang FR500GT, Mustang FR500C and now Mustang FR500S race cars are sold through Ford and compete in road racing circuits in North American and Europe. Davis also will be known for starting the Clorox/Ford Women’s Driver Development Program in USAC, the first partnership of a consumer sponsor and auto manufacturer to try and develop women for professional racing. He also expanded Ford’s grassroots racing programs, helping start the USAC Ford Focus Midget Series, which has grown nationally as a cost-effective way for youths to enter racing. The Columbus, Ohio show was a full show with Mustangers waiting in line for cancellations. There were 388 spaces between the Marriott and Drury Inn filled with beautiful cars. The CVMC members attending were Dave and Judi Dickey, Tony Hall, Kathy McWilliams and her sister Karen, and Rick Nochta. Tony, Kathy, Rick and Dave judged. In talking with some of the assistant National head judges, they indicated it has been a long time

since MCA had so many experienced judges at a National show. 95% of the judging was completed by evening. The awards ceremony was unique in that the awardees name and car was shown on 2 large screens. Kathy earned Silver and Dave earned 2nd place awards. The tentative show schedule for 2009 was discussed but the dates have not been confirmed:

• The big 45th birthday celebration, April 17, 18, and 19, at Barber Motorsports park outside Birmingham, Alabama will replace the Grand National, so there will be no Grand National on Labor Day weekend

• The June National show in Michigan is still up in the air as the club is having trouble getting sponsorship. As a result, Raleigh, N.C. may be awarded a show to take place on 4 July.

• Las Angles, California is scheduled to have a National show Labor Day weekend

The 2nd Annual Mustang Lovers’ cruise will sail from Galveston, Texas to Montego Bay, Jamaica, Georgetown, and Grand Cayman on the Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas; February 1st to the 8th, 2009. Mustang Times magazine is a first-rate publication for the Mustang hobbyists and published by MCA. It is full of advance information on next year’s Mustang, technical and “how to do” information for all your Mustangs in addition to discounts on various parts vendors. The type of parts and amount of discount is published on the forums site. Car Hobbyist News From

the Council

By Fred Fann

What is on the minds of everyone in this country right now? Could it be gasoline prices and the economy? I think the country has reached a consensus to drill off shore, in the Artic and anywhere else in the US where oil and natural gas can be found. That is we have all reached a consensus except those in Congress. It’s tough to understand why they would stand in the way of what all Americans want. Unfortunately the ban on drilling should have been lifted years ago so we could be using that fuel right now instead of hoping the ban gets lifted, then hoping that the oil companies will explore and drill, and then hoping that there is enough there to offset the high price until this country finally comes up with a comprehensive workable energy plan. Those who remember the 70’s will recall that for well over 30 years we have known that the cost and availability of gasoline is going to be a problem. Oil is produced in places that don’t like us and is subject to all kinds of problems. Our elected leaders have

done nothing for over 30 years to come up with an energy plan. Instead they have spent many millions of our tax dollars on research that hasn’t created anything. Sure we have electric cars that aren’t any better than they were in 1900. And yes Honda does have a fuel cell car that it is testing. But the fuel cell car’s cost is estimated at $1 million dollars and there are only a handful of hydrogen fuel cell stations so a fuel cell car is not a real solution at this time. And who knows how much hydrogen will cost? Just buying it for experiments in labs is expensive. It’s simple – our elected leadership has failed us. I can sense the anger of a lot of Americans caused by that failure of leadership. It’s not just energy but in a lot of areas we feel our leadership has failed to lead. Even on the state level we have a failure of leadership. It’s been three and a half years and once again the General Assembly is meeting to decide what to do about transportation funding. The governor has his plan and the GOP has a plan. Neither are perfect but we can all hope and pray that they will work together and come up with a plan that will go into effect really soon. Why is it we have such a failure of leadership? I think there are many reasons but a major one is gerrymandering of districts. Right now in Virginia most districts are not competitive. In other words districts are drawn by members of the General Assembly after each census so that only a Democrat or a Republican can win a certain district. If only a Democrat can win a certain district then usually the GOP doesn’t even run anyone and vice versa. When the Democrats pick someone who cannot lose they usually pick someone from the far left. The GOP picks someone from the far right. Neither the far right winger nor the far left winger want to compromise and we have what is called gridlock and we the voters lose. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans select enough candidates that are in the main stream and are

willing to compromise to move the locality, state or nation forward. Unfortunately our elected leaders seem to be more interested in their own party, their own money, their re-election, fund raising and other activities and not for working for the betterment of our country and us.
