    Wow, what a season! It certainly had its ups and downs but finished with a fantastic result. Summarise the season through your eyes?I think in the past where we have been unlucky, this year we had a certain amount of luck on our side. Previously in 2010 and 2012, we finished top of the league when the domestic season ended, but obviously didnt win anything those years. But, this year, we were the ones that snuck in at a very late stage coming in 4th in the league itself and then winning the play offs. It was an incredible achievement from the riders; momentum was definitely ours at that point and I think at that period of time, we could have beaten anybody. The fact we beat the best teams in the league over those few weeks, shows what type of form we were in.

    There were some great individual performances any riders that stood out in particular for you?It really would be unfair to pick any of them Maciej rode more than anyone else. Josh Grajczonek came in and did such a great job when he joined the club. Darcy and Chris; everyone looks to them expecting them to score massive points all of the time and thats what they do. Then Greg Hancock came in and Tungate had a great season we cant stop. Its been a great year.

    How do you think the lads pulled together as a team especially during those tough patches you faced?Initially, we were struggling at the start of the year. Chris and Darcy were not on the top of their game. Collectively between them, they were on average down by about 4 points and that was why we were losing at the start. Once those two found their form, there was no stopping us. When Chris got injured it was devastating for the club. We were very lucky bringing Greg in who was an ideal replacement. However, you cant ever get away from the fact that we were replacing the best rider in the world but luckily, we covered it.

    You mentioned about bringing in the great experience of Greg Hancock which obviously helped the loss of Chris, how much of an influence did he have on the team?We were not on a sound footing at the time but were just about hitting form when Chris got injured and we were winning meetings home and away. I think the team would have won the league based on where they were; Chris form was so good. It knocked the stuffing out of us when he got injured but luckily getting Greg in, not only gave Poole but also Speedway as a whole, a shot in the arm bringing back such a talisman of the sport. It was a huge plus for everyone in Speedway.

    EXCLUSIVE WITH MATT FORDThe Game caught up with Matt Ford, owner of Elite League 2013 winners, Poole Pirates, at the awards event in November to get his thoughts about the season gone and his hopes for 2014.

    It goes without saying that Darcys performance was excellent and he formed some great partnerships through the season, do you think this was inspired by the captaincy?I have no doubt. I have already spoken to him about how he would consider that position in the future and his words were that he would definitely want to be captain again, he really enjoyed it. I do think he stepped uphis advice for such a young kid was incredible. We talk about him being a kid but hes been riding professionally for 4 years at the top. In every sport you get an enigma and Darcy Ward in our sport, is just that hes as good as it gets.

    Can you tell us anything yet about the riders and plans for next season?It is all down to how the AGM goes; well know a lot more to update everyone in the next issue.

    Whats the update with Sky covering Speedway next season?That is really what everything is down to. They have been on board for 15 years and they are a great partner to work with. We personally love Sky Sports here and theres a good association between them and the Poole Pirates. I think one way or another, British Speedway will have a television partner next year and I just hope that it is Sky.

    Wimborne Road saw a great turnout through the season. How much of an influence does a good home support have?Home support helps in any sport if you come out to a partisan crowd cheering you on, its a tremendous help at home, in particular. You do feel it when you are away and when the opposing fans are booing and dislike the club. In any sport, you pick up your game in front of your own fans.

    Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the Pirates fans?Thank you very much for the support during the course of the year to the fans, sponsors and everyone associated with the club. Its been a great year for us all. We thank our media partners and everyone who has helped us put the club out there in front of people. From mid season around June onwards, our crowds were excellent. Thank you to you all at The Game and to everyone - have a very Happy Christmas and lets look forward to some more silverware in 2014!

    The Patient

    Tim Flower (33)Tim was born in Cyprus, moved to Bournemouth as a young child and joined Bournemouth Youth Rugby and minis at the age of 11 years old. Later on he played England school boys rugby, got a scholarship to Colstons in Bristol and was signed for Bath. Tim played a high level of rugby as an open side flanker until a series of serious injuries started hindering his career. He is a Partner of Preston Redman Solicitors and has coached Rugby at Bournemouth Uni, Oakmeadians Ladies, Dorset and Wilts U18 Girls, and now Dorset Dockers.

    At the start of 2009 Tim was injured with a torn rotator cuff in the right shoulder which resulted in a whole season out of the game. On his 1st game back in the pre season of 2010, a badly torn hamstring put him out of action for 4 months. On returning back from the hamstring injury in his first game he then suffered a compound fracture to his left arm which put him out of play for the rest of the season. Returning back to the game in 2011, he started having problems with his right arm and neck and experienced severe pain when tackling. He was later diagnosed with a C5 and C6 impingement on the right side. (Cervical nerve routes in the neck). Coupled with the rotator cuff injury on the same side Tim unfortunately had to retire from Rugby. Having always trained in the gym to gain strength and power for his game, he lost motivation to continue training without playing rugby. Thats when he got in touch with Martyn Lever, the Owner of CrossFit Bournemouth.

    CrossFit is NOT for the faint hearted! This is an intense exercise program featuring dynamic exercises like plyometric jumps and Olympic lifts while using non traditional weightlifting equipment such as kettlebells, sand-bags, body weight exercises and the dreaded Burpee!

    The pectoral muscles at the front of the chest become shorter as a result of the rounded shoulder syndrome and therefore rotate the shoulder joint forward even more so. Because the pectoral muscles (big guns) are shortening, the rotator cuff muscles on the back of the shoulder blade will lengthen. This will create a weakness in the rotator cuff muscles (little guys) as a result. The Pectoral muscles are overworking because theyre part of the big guns and the rotator cuffs weaken and start relaxing because theyre on the little guys team! So, as a result, Lattisimus Dorsi (large muscle in the back) is also a prime shoulder rotator it must save the day being a big gun so as a result of Lat Dorsi doing all the work, it potentially creates a weakness in the lower back. The Latissimus Dorsi muscle originates from the lower back and inserts into the top of the arm / shoulder joint. Gluteas Maximus (hip / buttocks muscle) whos also on the big guns team now has to kick in to support the lower back. Get the picture? The big guns are overworking and the little guys are relaxing! In Tims case the gluteal muscles have shortened as a combination of lower back weakness, therefore creating external rotation at the hip, making the hamstrings and adductors too long (and potentially weak) and adding strain onto his knee joint and ankle joint. So the lower back stabilising muscles have to work very hard to keep his ankle, knee, hip, shoulder and neck joints stable, and hes working these lower back muscle groups to their absolute max in his CrossFit routine to keep him stable so no wonder hes in pain!

    The Problem

    Tim originally came to see Amanda because he was suffering with lower back pain. After an intensive assessment of Tims sporting injuries and asking relevant questions relating to his current CrossFit Program, as well as specific muscle tests, Amanda was able to identify why Tim experiences lower back pain.

    As CrossFit is such an explosive exercise program the body will recruit all the large compound muscles (big guns) in order to execute exercises such as squats, dead lifts, back extensions, over head bar lifts, pull ups, kettlebell swings, split lifts, press ups, chin ups and so it goes on... Tims rugby career helped him develop power and strength in these large compound muscles. However, as a result of injuries the body then develops weaknesses in certain areas. As a result of Tims rotator cuff injury in his shoulder, the large compound back muscle called Latissimus Dorsi would inevitably have kicked in to do most of the rotation required at his shoulder joint because the rotator cuff muscles (the little guys) were weakened due to injury. Combine that with the fact that he spends a large proportion of his day in a seated position in front of a computer and hes right handed, the weakness in the shoulder is compounded because of what I call rounded shoulder syndrome.

    The muscles that insert into the shoulder joint are namely biceps and triceps from the arm, the pectoral muscles from the chest and the rotator cuff muscles that sit flush on the shoulder blade to name a few.

    The body requires balance... Pain is your bodies way of saying something is wrong, do something about it.

    AMANDAS SOLUTIONAmanda developed a specific strengthening routine for Tim to master outside of the gym. Specific, concentric strengthening exercises for the rotator cuff muscles as well as the triceps, mid thoracic region (muscles in between shoulder blades) and deep neck and spinal stabilisers. Working the little guys involve deep, concentric and slow movements. Its like going back to basics. In order to recruit the very deep muscles this style of movement is essential and it can be very challenging especially when the body is used to recruiting all the big guns. Pilates / Callanetic style of movement is ideal for this type of strength development. Other basic movement based exercises can be applied using a ball to help recruit the rotator cuff muscles more effectively and the same ball can be used in a bridge exercise to help strengthen up the adductors (muscles on the inside of the legs).

    The body requires balance. If the muscles at the front of the body (anterior) are too short as a result of being sat at a desk all day with rounded shoulder syndrome or because the style of exercise you engage in on a weekly basis consistently recruits the big guns then naturally the little guys are going to struggle to do what theyre meant to do.... and that is stabilise the joints. If the joints are unstable, a number of weaknesses occur and that is when pain sets in. Pain is your bodies way of saying something is wrong, do something about it.

    Tim continues to challenge himself with exercises that go against the grain, however, if he persists and continues to strengthen up the little guys with exercises that are simple in comparison to what hes used to, he will achieve his goal of playing rugby again.

    Tim has also changed from a sitting desk to a standing desk which has helped to take the pressure off his lower back.

    Things can change so quickly. A bright and exciting start to the season by the first team at Bournemouth Rugby Club saw them (albeit very briefly) sit on top of National Division 2 South and for a few weeks maintain a position much better than over the same period last year. Under the guidance of the new director of rugby, Budge Pountney, spirits in the club were high. Unfortunately, the 1st XV has now been on the end of a series of painful beatings.

    Since mid-October, there has been a run of five losses in a row. Beaten at home by Hartpury College and Bishops Stortford, the Lions also suffered heavy defeats away to Canterbury, Ampthill and Clifton. Those results have dropped the team well down the table to a position close to the relegation zone, which was all too familiar to them last season.

    It is easy to say that the tough guys who play at this level just have to get going again, but that is made extremely difficult when so many injuries have befallen the squad over the last month or so. Those injuries cannot be used as an excuse for poor performances, but with several unplanned changes in key positions in the team week after week, it is perhaps no surprise that the points have been going the wrong way for the Lions on the scoreboard recently. Reversing that trend will require a lot of effort, both mentally and physically, but there is excellent coaching and support at Chapel Gate to help the team do better at the basics and find its form again. When a few experienced players recover from injury and return to the fray, confidence in the team will undoubtedly rise. As a number of the squad have revealed in their profiles in home match programmes, one of the worst things about rugby is losing, so that is a habit they will all want to kick as soon as possible.

    None of the matches coming up for Bournemouth this side of the Christmas break will offer anything other than robust challenges, starting with Cambridge at home on Saturday 23 November. It will not just be the Lions bodies that are tested, but, as is so often the case on the rugby pitch, their strength of character too. They passed those tests convincingly at the beginning of this seasons campaign, so they have it in them to do it again.

    As the famous song goes Its Christmas time, mistletoe and wine dont worry; I wont carry the lyrics on! As we now become accustomed to Cliff Richard repeating on the radio every day, December additionally becomes the month where we find ourselves settling into new dietary habits almost completely different

    from the previous 11 months of the year. When it comes to eating over the holidays, how many of you have recited or been told the old adage eat it, its Christmas dont worry it wont do any harm. Being the inquisitive writer that I am, I thought I would use this theory as a basis to share with you my own knowledge of calorie over-consumption and its effects and, apply it in this instance to the Christmas holidays.

    Ok, just to further fuel your image of me as a massive Christmas scrooge and before I get into the bones about what happens to your body when you splurge out over the holidays; here are some interesting nutrition facts about consumer purchasing behaviour throughout December. Discounted supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl and Poundland saw an upsurge in sales, close to 40% last December when compared to the rest of year. Amongst their biggest selling lines, perhaps no big shock was both chocolate and sweets. In one example, Poundland sold an astounding 4 million bars of Toblerone, 3.6 million of After Eight mints and 3.1 million boxes of Maltesers, all in just 4 weeks!

    As we know, entertaining over the holidays usually involves more than a box of chocolates and a game of charades. With the big nights in, Christmas parties and the evenings in town, it is estimated that on top of the rise in consuming bad food; alcohol consumption in the UK throughout December is 41% higher than the annual monthly average. But here is the one fact that might really make you raise an eyebrow; on Christmas day, it is estimated that the average Briton consumes around 3 times more calories than a typical day, predicted at 6,000 for women and 7,500 for men or 260 to 330 grams of fat. Total Christmas day up with the increased calorie intake throughout December and you can probably see why gyms are always so busy in January then.

    Ok, so I cant keep putting it off; I will now attempt to explain what happens to your body when you over-consume on bad calories to this high a degree. Firstly, if I was to break down the food and drink consumption mentioned above there are two re-occurring ingredients, sugar and white flour. As most diabetics out there will know

    when these two ingredients are consumed in high doses it can have a major effect on the bodys blood sugar levels. This is because the flour and sugar in our favourite Christmas foods and desserts are released rapidly into our bloodstream causing a blood sugar spike which itself forces the pancreas to release higher levels of insulin. Ever wondered why some people fall asleep in the evening on Christmas day after eating and some dont? Well, it may not be true in all cases but generally those that suffer with fatigue and lethargy around this time are individuals that to varying degrees are insulin resistant.

    Simply, insulin resistance is where your body resists the normal action of insulin release and, is typically caused by a continual overconsumption of simple (bad) carbohydrates and sugars. When you become insulin resistant, the GLUT4 special transporter in every cell membrane no longer allows glucose taken from carbohydrates to be utilised as glycogen for energy production throughout the bodies working muscles. With no glucose entering our cells, fatigue and lethargy subsequently kick in, hence the Christmas napping. Away from the tiredness over production of insulin can additionally stimulate weight gain. This is because the number of consumed calories coupled with little or no exercise exceeds the number of calories you need to maintain a healthy weight. The extra glucose that your cells dont use then gets stored as body fat, hence why diagnosed type 2 diabetics are usually overweight.

    Other warning signs of being insulin resistant away from weight gain and fatigue can be regular changes in

    the menstrual cycle, mood swings, skin colour (dark, velvety patches) and excess facial hair (women).

  • CHRISTMAS SURVIVAL TIPSNow having read the preceding article dont panic I am not saying to cancel the Christmas party, but bearing in mind all of the above, here are my top 4 tips for staying fit through the holiday season.

    1 Do 10 minutes of exercise: Lets face it; the only way to keep those calories from becoming fat is by burning them. Its just a matter of balancing the odds, right? With the social calendar preventing you from hitting the gym, try doing some short HIIT workouts (High impact interval training) at home for just 10 to 20 minutes 2 to 3 times a week. You can burn more calories in 15 minutes of HIIT than 1 hour on a treadmill, an example beginners workout would be doing high knees, a fast feet movement (skipping) or sprinting for 30 seconds then walk/stay active for 1 minute, repeating 10 to 20 times.

    2 Buffet table tactics: Food wise, you should not deprive yourself when you are at a party. Go ahead and eat what you want, within reasonable limits. However, some smart tactics you can employ to prevent overeating are to eat wholegrain cereals and breads before going out to stave off hunger for longer and, at the party dont go straight for the buffet mingle with your friends and family first. When you reach the buffet table, skip eating the foods that you dont really like and when you do fill your plate only have two food types at a time.

    3 Cut on the booze: No doubt, it is very hard to avoid alcohol over Christmas. Its sad to be left out when all your friends are having fun drinking with each other. You dont have to be the party pooper, go ahead and join them. But of course be smart enough to drink less by drinking plenty of water during the day so youre not dehydrated in the evening, take longer on each drink and alternate your alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic beverages when possible. In addition try swapping your favourite sugary cocktail for the same shot of liquor and soda water over ice with just a splash of the sugary mix. This way you get to join the fun without having to ingest all those unwanted calories.

    4 Remember the beach body: Just remember that after the holidays, the next thing you will start preparing for is getting into your swimwear and showing off your beach body again. Motivate yourself by hanging up your best picture of you in your swimwear. This will remind you to maintain your beach body and keep it in tiptop shape. If that doesnt work, hang up a picture of an overweight person in their swimwear for extra motivation!

At 40 years old, Steve has been training hard to be in the best shape to bring the belt back to Bournemouth and he commented This came out of nowhere and its my chance to prove Ive got something left.     Max is 10 years old and attends Moyles Court School. He lives locally with his

    family and enjoys using the facilities at New Forest Water Park where he has

    been learning wakeboarding for the last three years. He rides a Slingshot Board

    and his favourite trick is a Bel-Air. Max is sponsored by King of Watersports and

    New Forest Water Park.

    Were speaking to local children taking part in different sports across the area to ask

    about why they like to compete, what their goals are for the future and

    how others can give it a go in our One to watch feature.

    When did you start wakeboarding?I started wakeboarding when I was 7 out on the boat on the lake and this is my first year on the new cable. I came here when I was 6 with my parents but wasnt old enough to do it then as youve got to be 7. I used to watch other people and I kept asking my parents about it. When I turned 7, I started out on the boat and used to have a 15 minute lesson once a week during the summer. I have tried other sports like football and boxing but just didnt really get into it. It was from seeing others wakeboard that got me wanting to try it.

    Why wakeboarding and what do you love about it?I just love everything about wakeboarding. I like how you can get out on the water to enjoy your sport, I love that feeling.

    Do you take part in any other watersports?No, I am just concentrating on wakeboarding at the moment.

    How do you balance it with your school work?On Wednesdays, I go to the cable after school for 2 hours and go every Saturday and Sunday mornings. If I have any school work that has to be done, I make sure I do it all in the afternoons.

    Have you had any competitions or wins?Ive had one competition so far at Liquid Leisure, near Heathrow. It was a contest called Love Jam and I won it! That was my first one.

    What are you training for now?My instructor wants to put me in for the Nationals which is a serious competition, so Im hoping to go for that one.

    Do you have to keep fit and healthy to do your sport?Yes, my Dad looks after all of that for me! He is a fitness instructor so makes sure I eat a good, balanced diet to keep healthy. My family are great and support and encourage me to do well.

    Do you always train at New Forest Water Park or do you ever go out on the sea?No, I always come hereits my favourite place.

    Tell us about your instructor and how he helps you when youre trainingMy instructor is Ben, hes my personal coach! Hes good fun and I always listen to what he says to help me improve. Hes really encouraging and I enjoy my lessons with him.

    What would you recommend to other people reading this who may want to give wakeboarding a go?I think they should have the confidence to give it a go and get out on the water. Its a great sport and I would recommend it to anyone.

    Finally, what are your hopes and goals for the future?I would love to be British Champion in 2 years time and maybe in 4 years, the World Champion! That is what I am aiming for.

    Thanks for talking to us Steve, how is life going in the Championship?For me personally, Im loving it. Ive played every game so far and hopefully, that will continue. As a team, I feel weve bedded in well and we can keep that going.

    You got off to an incredible start to the season, what do you think this was down to?I think its down to the team spirit. We ended on a high last year and were in great form and that kind of carried over, apart from the two away results that we dont talk about much now! So, those aside, weve started well and certainly can build on this.

    and what are the team ambitions for the rest of the season?Its hard to say because its such an inconsistent league, everyone beats everyone. So, I think the main aim was to be in this league next year but we feel we can do better than that and finish in the top half and then who knows?

    Who are the best team you have come up against so far?I would say Watford as they beat us 6-1. In the first half, we were brilliant but the second half; they blitzed us and put 5 past us so it would have to be them.

    And what are your personal ambitions for the season and in football in general?This year, it would be to play as many games as possible, Ive played every one so far and I want to play every game to come. Obviously, that could be taken out of my hands with an injury or suspension but thats my main aim; to play as many as possible and to play as high as I can, really. Every footballers dream is to play in the Premier League so Ive just got to keep working hard and you never know

    A lot of the recent success has been attributed to the return of Eddie. How do you rate him as a manager?Without a doubt; he is a great manager and a really nice guy. Ever since he first came in, there was a buzz around the place and everyone wanted to do well for him. Hes got the respect of every player and the fans as well. I cant speak highly enough of him and personally I get on very well with him.

    It seems clear to us that you have a really tight squad of lads in the team, how is the banter within the camp?Yeah, its good. Its always been good to be fair. Weve got a good mixture of older and younger lads and we get on really well on the pitch. Off the pitch, we spend a lot of time together and even though we havent won in a while, the spirits are still high and we know what we want to do. Were competitive on the pitch and off the pitch we like to have a laugh

    Who are the main jokers?Its got to be Harry Arter and Simon Francisthey come as a pair! You just dont know what theyre going to do; together, theyre brilliant. I could watch them all day, to be honest.

    You signed on loan for Bournemouth in 2011, then full time a couple of months later at the beginning of 2012, how did that feel?It was a funny one because I knew I was going to be signing for Bournemouth but had to go back to Brighton for a game and then signed a couple of days after that. At one stage, I didnt think it was going to happen, so when it did, it was nice. It was strange because Ive been at Brighton since I was 9 so it was a massive change but its one that I never regret as I love it here.

    Do you now feel like Bournemouth is home?Yes definitely. Ive got some really good friends here. I live with Joe Partington and weve got a nice flat. I love it; its a great place to livethe guys, the gaffer; I wouldnt want to change it.

    Christmas is coming up and in footballing terms, that means a busy time with lots of games, how do you prepare for that period?For the fans, its a great time and they love Christmas with all the football going on and Boxing Day fixtures. For us, its all about preparation and looking after yourself; you cant be going out on the nights out and eating big Christmas dinners like everyone else. But, that is what it entails. We enjoy the break in the summer so it is work as normal and we have to be sensible. We will enjoy ourselves but maybe not as much as people would normally.

    Do you get a break to enjoy any festivities? No, well be in pretty much all the way through, every day. Its a hard schedule so well get the massages in and the legs in order.

This aggressive contact sport has as many bone crunching injures as Rugby. This relatively new sport has become an official event at the Paralympics, a worldwide

    competition for disabled athletes, and the United States and Canada have become fierce rivals in the event. When Joe Soares was dropped from the top-seated American team, he angrily retaliated by signing on as coach for the Canadian team, which he led to an upset victory for Team Canada in the games. In this documentary, filmmaker Henry Alex Rubin and journalist Dana Adam Shapiro, followed both teams as they travelled to Athens, Greece, for the 2004 Paralympics, documenting the fierce competition between the two teams.

  • The challengeThe LLD, Landsend London Dover Triathlon challenge was laid down by race Director, Edgar Ette from Enduroman. Seven selected athletes would cycle 336 miles from the UKs most South Western point into our capital city to swim 7.2 miles and then run 77 miles down to the South Eastern coast at Dover. A total of approximately 400 miles of cycling, swimming, and running. Jude spoke to her mum about the event when she was ill and although her brother was encouraging, both Richard and her mother were unsure about the magnitude of the undertaking. Despite the concerns, Jude was determined to push the boundaries and was the only woman to take part in memory of her dear mother and to raise money for the Forest Holme Hospice in Poole who took care of her precious parents.

    Training for such an epic event was daunting to Jude and she knew she had to get it right in order to be successful. She decided to seek professional help from experienced ultra athlete, Rich Prior, Tri Coach UK. Rich had raced all over the world as well as being a coach and she started training under his disciplined schedule in January 2013 for 9 months, starting at about 6 hours a week rising at its highest to around 23 hours a week and quite often training twice a day. Getting up in the early hours before work was not unusual. The training had to fit around her life and full time job.

    Rich looked after the logistics side of the training so Jude could concentrate on what she had to do. There were times when she would question herself but Rich was supportive and prepared her physically and mentally for the challenge ahead. Nutrition played an important part to keeping her fit and healthy and she used food as fuel to look after her body but still managed to enjoy the odd takeaway and glass of wine as welcomed treat during the months of training. Richs training put her in the best physical condition possible for the event. The rest was up to her...

    The emotionJude experienced her first low point of the race whilst riding through the hills of Dartmoor in the middle of the night. It was pitch black with a driving head wind and coming face to face with sheep on the road was unnerving. Then emotions swung to a high when she got to London; getting into the pool at Charlton Lido, she had the swim of her life 3rd fastest out of the water! Another difficult part was during the run; she was approaching 60 miles and her feet were on fire. Putting her foot to the ground was just excruciating using a special tape and changing her socks, her sports masseur, Lou gave her feet a new lease of life for a few more hours. Judes support crew; her husband Richard and friends, Murray and Lou, helped her keep on pushing towards the finish line making it a real team effort.

    Undoubtedly, the biggest high was the finish just knowing she could stop and sleep. She was one of the four athletes out of the seven who started the challenge to finish the whole event and the first women ever to complete the LLD challenge in 76hrs 23mins, it was a surreal moment for Jude and she dedicated her medal to the memory of her mum and dad, in her words We did it! Jude raised and incredible amount of 1,880.00 with Gift Aid of 403.50.

    What lies aheadJude knows this challenge wasnt the end but ultra endurance events come at a price, there is so much involved.. There is one challenge that continues to intrigue JudeThe Arch to Arc solo challenge: a 300 mile continuous triathlon challenge, linking London and Paris via an English Channel swim. The challenge starts at Londons Marble Arch with an 87 mile run to Dover, then swimming the English Channel to France, and finishing with a 180 miles bike ride to finish at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This is a chance to join a very special group who have completed one of the classic endurance challenges in the world; only 13 people in the world have completed this challenge to date, only 4 of which are women. Jude is tempted and looking for a potential sponsor to undertake such an epic event.

    Judith Martin (Jude) is 42 years old and married to Richard for 9 years. When she met Richard some 17 years ago, he was a keen triathlete, but she couldnt even swim, let alone ride a bike and run. She was in her early 30s when she realised how much she was missing out on not being confident in the water so she took swimming lessons with the hope of gaining some confidence. With time, determination and patience from fellow triathletes and friends, she eventually gained enough confidence to enter a couple of short distance triathlons.Despite her accomplishments, she felt that it may not be the sport for her but in 2007, her friend Lisa, who was about to turn 40 invited her to take on an Ironman challenge, to mark the occasion. Jude had witnessed Richard complete Ironman Austria and it never entered her mind that a year later, she would cross the very same finish line.

    Judes father was sadly diagnosed with cancer the year before and passed away in a very short time after his diagnosis at just 63 years old. She had shared her aspirations to take on an Ironman contest to which he said you will do it and she kept true to her word by completing her first Ironman and going on to finish the mammoth Enduroman Double Iron UK in 2011, following her mantra of anything is possible if you believe.

    Circumstances took an unexpected turn when Judes mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2012 and following a short illness, she passed away at just 65 years old. Losing both parents before she was barely in her 40s was complete shock and devastation for Jude and her brother, Louis. They couldnt quite believe it.

    Jude recommends Triathlon as a complete all-round workout combining CV benefits of swimming, cycling and running with an added dash of mega-endurance. Local triathlon clubs are always friendly and welcome new members, she learnt the most from talking with other experienced triathletes and just having a go.

    Hi James, tell us about yourself and how you started out playing rugby?I started playing Rugby when I was 8 years old. I was sitting in assembly when the Headmaster of Poulner Junior School announced they were starting up a Mini Rugby Club and that we were all invited along to experience Rugby. Needless to say, I loved it and have been playing ever since. The Mini Rugby Club was Ellingham and Ringwood RFC, and I went on to represent senior clubs Newbury and London Irish, as well as England at Under-18 and Under-19 level. Im happy to report that the Mini and Junior sections at both clubs are still thriving.

    Who do you play for, which league are you in and what is your position?I now play for Fordingbridge RFC in the Snows Group Hampshire Division One, I play as Hooker and last season I made my debut for the county, Hampshire. This season, Ive been asked to Captain the club as well as continue my role as Colts coach. Something I enjoy very much.

    How is the season going so far?So far this League season weve won four matches out of five. In the match that we lost by just seven points - we had a very abrasive game against a well-drilled and clinical Andover team. What is encouraging this year is the amount of support our Colts team are giving the Senior element of the club. This is the first time weve had representation from all three age groups in the Colts, and its meant that so far seven Colts players have played 1st XV or 2nd XV Rugby...after only four games.

    What does your training involve and do you train in addition to the clubs regime?The Clubs training regime revolves around two 90-minute sessions, every Tuesday and Thursday at the Fordingbridge Sports Ground. These sessions vary in length and intensity based on what our coaching team feels we need to concentrate on. They will nearly always be game related, and have a fitness element to them. As well as the clubs training, I often have the odd run or pop to the gym, but nothing like I used to.

    Do you have to be strict with your diet?Its probably advisable to be strict with your diet, especially with the amount of work you have to put in but unfortunately it is fair to say, I enjoy my food. So, I eat what I want! There are lots of rumours on what happens within a rugby team, describe the banter in your team (as clean as poss!)All I can say is I wouldnt put too much faith in rumours! However Rugby players tend to be big characters, guys who like the physical element of the game and enjoy playing a rough but respectful game.

    I can imagine rumours are rife but this can be true of any male-dominated environment where you have big characters charged with energy. The banter in our team is of top quality! We have great inter-squad banter, banter between the Colts and Ladies teams. And on a Sunday morning you can always see a good contingent of Senior players down at The Rec coaching the numerous Childrens teams.

    If people are interested in trying rugby whether theyre an adult or child, whats the best way to go about taking part and starting out? You need to contact your local club, by going along to a training session or indeed to a match. Maybe it is a good idea to have a look on a website first and get some guidance there.     Thanks for talking to us, Chris...what got you into kitesurfing and how long have you been doing it? My old man originally he brought me up windsurfing and wakeboarding, getting me amped about watersports and board riding since I was a kid. We used to head for local lakes in Wiltshire until I got old enough to explore the coast in the hunt of better conditions. I was 13 when we heard about kitesurfing in 1999 and having got hold of a kite, we taught ourselves the basics and figured it out the hard way for the next few years.

    Why kitesurfing?Because it looked like a merger of everything else I did, just better. Like windsurfing, its fast, powerful and free, but identical to wakeboarding where its full of variety, adrenaline and technicality. Unlike other sports, it never gets boring and opens up a world of disciplines as you get better. From free ride to freestyle and park, or surfing onshore mush to big waves and barrels. Even 13 years on, Im still left buzzing from sessions.

    Can you tell us about any comps or wins youve had?The last event I rode in would have been the 2011 Triple S Invitational on Cape Hatters in North Carolina, where 24 of us were invited to compete in the Slicks, Sliders & Surf categories. I won 2nd place in the winch slider jam and went home amped from an incredible time riding and hanging with friends as usual. Since then, feeling it was time to plant some roots, Ive been focusing on product and brand development alongside the opening of my own school. When time allows, Im excited to travel to events with friends again in the future.

    When did you launch Poseidon and what inspired you to do it?Poseidon has been the brain child of mine for the last 10 years, ever since I first started teaching. Travelling the world and running schools since I was old enough to work, Ive been formulating plans knowing that when the time was right, Id put all my passion and experience into an operation of my own. Im the kind of person that goes into things 100%, so after identifying a busy market place with lots of opportunity and potential, I decided it was time to act on my bursting ideas and opened up in May 2013. What Im trying to do is shake the attitude which comes with so many watersports schools in the UK and create a Caribbean school atmosphere where everyone feels welcome to learn or just hang out with us on the beach.

    Whats your best or favourite trick?Not that easy to answer since it all depends on my mood. In freestyle mode, a trick called a front blind mobe is so fluid, it always makes me smile. Smacking the lip of a wave in the surf never gets old and in the kite park, I just love getting pressy.

    Have you ever been in any bad accidents?Fortunately, Ive never injured myself too seriously. I have seen my fair share of accidents and I have got myself into all sorts of horrific situations, but kiting by two rules Ive always had the foresight to eject: 1) always leave reaction time 2) life is more important than gear.

    Do you take part in any other water sports?I love wakeboarding, pretty much because it is the same as kiting, just powered by a motor. Most sunny, windless days, youll find me at the cable park. If Ive ridden myself out then I also love to get under the water with a spear gun. Pooles got a bunch of sea life and there isnt a better dinner than fresh fish youve hunted yourself.

    What do you think of the conditions locally in Poole and Bournemouth and along the coast? I think were very lucky to have such variety here and as a kiteboarder, its a very exciting terrain. There arent many other places in the world where within a 10 minute drive, you can choose between waves, chop or flat water. Whats more, theres even less places where everyday youre still discovering new spots to session, sometimes that really blows my mind.

    What surf/wind reports to you use to check out conditions locally? Windguru, xcweather, magic seaweed, wind finder, in the elementsnothing like being on the beach watching it live though.

    Youve been involved with designing equipment; tell us about that and how it came about?Having switched sponsors to a Hawaiian based company called Wainman, I was invited out to Maui to shoot a video. Arriving on the island, I instantly got on well with the owners and the team, they offered me a role brand managing and designing alongside my riding. I didnt have to think about it for too long, before I found myself road tripping across the states sampling new products and recommending what we change. Its an incredible honour and Im very lucky to have spent seasons on the North shore working through prototypes and designing products that people are stoked on. It not only taught me so much about the gear and how the industry works, but for me it was a dream come true.

    What do you recommend to anyone reading who might want to give it a go?Book on a course and do it. In just 2 days you can learn everything you need to know and be out of the water excited and free. Its as easy as flying a kite and as effortless as riding a snowboard.

    Whats your favourite kitesurfing hot spot in the surrounding area? Technically, we arent allowed to kite there, so going to print, I cant tell you!But, where we are allowed, Shell Bay is a hidden gem!

    and your favourite hangout place?Locally? The BT pub, a golden oldie. Worldwide? Sabre Rock in the BVIs, nowhere else like that place.

    Finally, where in the world would you most like to kitesurf that you havent yet? Brazil, Ive always wanted to go but somehow always missed it. Next November, youll find me in one of their countless perfect lagoons sipping a cold beer and making the most of their steady wind and winter sun.

    Volunteering happens everywhere and at all times of the day and night. It is an act that many different people do for many different reasons. From young people wanting to gain experience to older people who may have retired, there are thousands of people volunteering all over the UK. The health industry, education, businesses and organisations all rely heavily on the goodwill of people giving their time to do something beneficial, without getting paid. In return, people get direct benefits whether that is emotional, physical or practical to enrich their lives, develop a particular skill or even increase health and fitness levels.

    Amongst the varied sectors volunteers work in, charities are where many people choose to give their time. A lot of charities dont have budgets to hire staff and helpers to secure the running of the organisation and turn to volunteers to aid in the good work they do.

    Bournemouth based charity; KiteRight relies on volunteers 100% of the time - for events, tuition, technical support, administration and directly helping the people they work with. The team of KiteRight volunteers vary from qualified BKSA instructors to University students, people in full time jobs and those who arent in employment but value the voluntary work to broaden skills and experience.

    The Game caught up with some of the team who support the charity to find out their motivations behind the good work they do

    Rhys Chandler is 19 years old and a Care Giver at a residential care house. He is currently studying sports fitness and management with the Open University. He started volunteering when he did his powerkite instructors course with the charity in October 2012. As one of the instructing team, he helps with sessions by setting up/taking down equipment and teaching people how to fly kites. He also helps spread the word about the charity at events and helps with anything generally that needs doing. He meets potential new volunteers at Bournemouth University so they understand what is involved.

    When we asked Rhys why he does what he does, he commented, Nothing is better than seeing someone who has a disability and has been told their whole life they cant do something, then watching them happy and having the time of their life. It is priceless. I get self satisfaction from doing something amazing!His hopes for the future of KiteRight in 2014, are to recruit more people to help in all aspects of the charity whether that is practical or more on the administration side. We need more people to help so we can continue to give people the opportunity to do something different and show the world how we are making a difference

    Chloe Schendel-Wilson, 21, volunteers for KiteRight whilst studying Biological sciences at Bournemouth University. She started volunteering with KiteRight when she assisted them on a MAD Day with SUBU Volunteering last year. She learnt how to fly the kites with Gary from KiteRight and Scotty Bunter, who is a KiteRight Ambassador and has cerebral palsy. She loves volunteering because of the rewarding feeling you get, knowing that youre giving something back to the community and helping others, without expecting anything in return.

    Meet Johnathan Speeden, aged 33. He has helped with Kiteright from the very beginning at the charitys launch event. His wife, Karen, also helped for the event, pulling in some of her contacts to get hold of some large screens for the event so the charity could show the launch video to everyone attending.

    Johnny got into Kitesurfing not long before Kiteright was set up. He met Gary Hawkins, the founder of KiteRight, whilst he was out Kitesurfing one day and when he told Johnny about the charity, he immediately wanted to get involved.

    Johnny comments, I have been fortunate to have been trained through the charity as a power kite instructor. When I have the time from my day job I get the chance to volunteer and teach people of all ages

    something out of your own time, most people understand that you might need to be flexible and work around times that suit you, so theres no pressure to commit more than you can!

    Chloe is now president of SUBU Volunteering and would love to get more Bournemouth University students involved with Kiteright, especially those from clubs and societies, such as the universitys wakeboarding and kitesurfing society. SUBU Volunteering and Kiteright are also working together now to organise some more MAD Days (one-off volunteering days), and potentially getting involved with some more charities, such as Bournemouth YMCAs Chatterboxes scheme for disabled young people.

    how to kite. Students range in abilities from complete beginner to those who have kited before. I have taught people that have learning difficulties to people with severe disabilities but all of them have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have watched students that turn up on the day very nervous and believing that they cant kite, to then seeing them at the end of the day flying the kite independently, giving them a great sense of achievement.

    This charity for me is all about giving everyone the chance to get into kite sports. At times kiting can be seen as an elite sport, not accessible to everyone but KiteRight breaks this barrier. I hope in 2014 that KiteRight will get more volunteers to help the charity grow and Im looking forward to meeting lots of new kite enthusiasts.

    It is normal for your eating pattern to change and for you to indulge in foods you wouldnt normally eat over the festive season. Why not make this Christmas the one you dont end up regretting well into the New Year?

    The key is to plan! Careful planning and consideration will help cut those unnecessary Christmas calories. Here are our top tips to help you stay v.healthy over the festive season.

    KEEP THOSE CHRISTMAS DINNER CALORIES TO A V.MINIMUM Keep your plates small to help limit your portion sizes Choose a healthy starter such as soup, melon or smoked salmon Enjoy extra vegetables, they are low in fat and calories providing they are not covered in sauce or butter Go for the breast of the turkey, its the leanest part and say goodbye to the skin Want all the trimmings? Save on calories by grilling the sausages and bacon and opting for low fat milk in your bread sauce. Select a fruity stuffing with dried cranberries and prunes, chestnuts and onions For most, roast potatoes are a must on Christmas Day but forget the goose fat and lard, opt for olive oil, sunflower or rapeseed oil. Although high in calories these oils contain far less saturated fat Serve your Christmas pudding with low fat custard rather than brandy butter

    CHEERS TO V.FESTIVE DRINKS Of course most people will enjoy a couple of drinks over Christmas but keep in mind that alcohol can be very high in calories. Consider how many units are in your favourite tipple and try and stick to 1-2 units a day for women and 2-3 units a day for men Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks Take advantage of mixers to extend drinks e.g. white wine spritzer wine and soda water/low calorie lemonade Opt for a tall thin glass to reduce the volume of alcohol consumed hiball glass Make sure you have some alcohol free days too Look out for non alcoholic fruit punches and cocktail recipes

    SNACK V.SENSIBLY Stock up on healthy snacks over Christmas e.g. unsalted nuts, dried fruits, satsumas and fresh fruit Try not to snack often but when you do choose a healthy option Look out for cake recipes that use vegetable oil instead of butter Opt for a plain Christmas cake as it contains less fat when compared weight for weight with a normal sponge cake. Keep your portion sizes reasonable

  • We are pleased to bring you monthly reports and information regarding racing events held at Ringwood Raceway. We hope you will enjoy our monthly features where reports and happenings of Trojan Motorsports Ltd events will feature within The Game Magazine for your perusal.

    With 2013 rapidly drawing to a close, it creates a chance to look back at Ringwoods year as a track and the future in 2014. It would be accurate to say that this year Ringwood has enjoyed a consistent turnout of excellent meetings, both for driver turnouts and in terms of the running of the show. The National Bangers scene at the track has come along in leaps and bounds, with, even at this early stage, drivers from across the UK and beyond showing interest in attending the 3000 Under 2 Litre UK Open next year in February. The three Unlimited meetings the track holds have all been well supported by both drivers and fans alike, and we hope this trend can be made even better as we head into the new year. We at Ringwood would like to sincerely thank every driver, mechanic, staff member, marshal, photographer and anyone else who attended and made Ringwood that little bit better this season, we hope to see you all again in the new year, keep checking the website www.trojaninternational.co.uk for news on fixtures and upcoming meetings.

    Forthcoming Events With the start of 2014 rapidly approaching, the main focus will be on the flurry of National Banger meetings at Ringwood at the start of the year.

    Saturday 4th January sees a new fixture for the track, Micro National Bangers Best Buddies teams of two. This event is gathering interest at a rapid rate with teams booking in regularly. Dont miss it. Gates open at 4:00pm, racing at 6:00pm

    Saturday 1st February sees a huge National Banger event at the track, with two classes of Bangers, Under 2 ltr Front Wheel Drive and Under 2 ltr Rear Wheel Drive. Interest for this meet is growing by the day, with currently near 100 cars booked for the FWD class, with a lot more expected. Many teams are booked from the north such as the Predators, Aftermath and Mad Hatters, while from Essex the Midnight Runners and Cream Team are coming to do battle with the locals. Dont miss this cracker of a meeting, gates open at 3:00pm with racing at 6:00pm.

  • Have you prepared in any way for this one? Its not an activity you can really train specifically for I could have tried shimmying up my drain pipe and traversing the window ledge, but I wouldnt know how to get down, apart from the obvious and just fall down! I hope there arent any drain pipes on the course; otherwise Ive missed an opportunity!

    AFTERYou did it and completed the whole course! What did you think? WOW! Im well impressed that was great fun and what a way to getting back to nature by finding your inner monkey man (that Darwin chap is definitely onto something). The course was great - rope ladders, obstacles, zip wires and cargo nets. Tree top-tastic!

    What was the trickiest part and how did you handle the heights? The toughest bit was the stirrups that dangled on the end of the ropes. If you dont angle your foot just right, you cant get a good footing and youre left hanging on for dear life until the stirrup settles enough for you to have another crack at it. You need a bit of upper body strength for that badger. I dont suffer from vertigo, when youre 6 foot 2 you get used to dizzying heights. As our instructor Dave said, best not to keep looking down, keep your head up and always stay focused on what you are doing. ALWAYS STAY ATTACHED TO THE SAFETY LINE.

    What was your favourite part? The zip wires are coolyou get to whoosh through the tree tops. Watch out for the landings though, you can get a little dirty if you dont land on your feetwhich my washing machine now knows about!

    Did you feel safe up in the trees and what was the team like? Your safety is primarily up to you, but as long as you read the information around the course and listen carefully to the instructors at the beginning, youll be safe. The Go Ape team were great; they explained everything and took us through lots of practice routines before we even got one foot off the ground.

    There is a childrens Tree Top Adventure course for under 10s to do too would you recommend it as a good family activity day?

    I definitely would there were a couple of families with young children out doing the course which was great to see. They all looked like they were enjoying

    spending quality family time together in what is a challenging, exciting and fun outdoor activity.

    MISSION NO. 14GO APE AT MOORS VALLEY

    Our new man, Dan did incredibly well last month when he had a go at Stand Up Paddleboarding. With the help of his great instructor, he was up and paddling along the Sandbanks coastline with only one fallimpressive! We sent Dan along to Go Ape, the original Tree Top Adventure experience set in the beautiful forest of Moors Valley Country Park to get at one with his inner Tarzan with some tree swinging action! We heard Dan wasnt keen on heights so the fact it all takes place 11 metres above the forest floor made the morning even more amusing. With award winning high ropes, tunnels, nets and giant zip wires, it was set to be a fun challenge at Go Ape, Moors Valley

    Hi Dan, Well done on the SUP challenge! We were very impressed that you took to it so wellany plans to hit the water again soon? Yes and no the SUP was great fun and it is something I could really get into but now we are coming into winter, Ill leave the sea activities to those more dedicated to wearing a wetsuit than I. Brave souls!

    Were off for some fresh air, fun and maybe a little bit of adrenaline thrown in at Go Ape, Moors Valleyhave you ever done anything like this before? Nope, Im more of a keep my feet on the ground sort of guy but I will be looking to climb the ladder of success at Go Ape (excuse the pun) by completing the course in the quickest timewish me luck.

    Poole Town F.C. is a football club based in Poole, Dorset, England who play in the Southern League Premier Division after being promoted as champions of the Southern League Division One South and West in the 201213 season. They were established in 1890 and joined the Western League Division Two in 1930. The club is affiliated to the Dorset County Football Association and is a FA Charter Standard Community Club.
