Introduction Following on the heels of the very popular Dragonball Z: Budokai fighting game is the sequel from Atari, Dragonball Z: Budokai 2. This guide includes everything you need to know about the game, including basic moves, full move lists for every character, a full list of capsules and unlockables, and a walk -through for the Dragon World single player mode.

Basics You can learn almost all of these concepts by going through the manual or the training section of the practice mode, however, for sake of completion we’ll go over the basics here.

Offensive commands Advancing: Forward Rushing: Forward, hold Forward Punch: P Kick: K Energy blast: E Taunt: P+K+G+E Nullify: When one non-special move has certain properties that make it "beat out" other normal moves (moves like Back+P+K, which all characters have). Bursting: Perform a nullify against an opponent’s nullify, which will launch you into a masher-friendly combo stage.

Defensive commands Retreating: Back Back dash: Back, hold Back Guard: G Side stepping: Guard+Up or Guard+Down Energy fill: While holding G -- Back, Back Energy deflect: Hit G right before a basic energy blast hits your character. Hitting G early in the collision will deflect the projectile off to the side where hitting G in the later frames will send the projectile directly back to the opponent. Flip Out (AKA Fall break): When your lifeless body is about to smack the ground, hit Back, Back+G

Advanced Techniques The harsh reality of Budokai 2’s fighting engine is that everything is very restricted in comparison to other fighters. This is especially true in two major areas: immediately accessible moves and height variation of said moves. The majority of the move list available to each character is buried within the strict chain combo system (if you want a specific punch or kick, you are forced to run through a specific chain combo…otherwise you are stuck with the basics). The move list, while having differing height variations, doesn’t end up meaning much since your opponent blocks every attack the same way

Page 8: The GameSpot Complete Game Guide to Dragonball Z: Budokai 2the-eye.eu/public/Books/Strategy_Guides/Calibre Strategy Guides Part 1... · The GameSpot Complete Game Guide to Dragonball

(holding guard will block every normal attack regardless of how it mixes up height variety).

Combos The combo system in Budokai 2 exists in a very controlled environment. Combos are literally already laid out for you so that simply mashing on the punch, kick or a combination of the two will dial out a combo for you. The non-existence of height variation and limitations on basically accessible moves makes breaking out of these canned routines very difficult. As of right now, there isn’t much you can do for ground based, head to head combos that will allow you to "cancel" one scripted attack string to start another.

Juggles Juggles are probably the single element in combos that do allow for breaking out of the scripted routines of the ground chains and open a window for some originality on the player’s part. When you perform a combo that ends with your opponent popped up into the air (not to be confused with slamming him/her up into a higher plane), you can then perform a second combo that will continue to juggle the opponent’s body. For those who love playing around with the possibility of long combos, this is probably your only chance to drop out of some combo strings and perform a third or even fourth set of canned combos. Some things to keep aware of when practicing juggles is that once the body hits the floor, the opponent can flip out/break their fall and block any additional hits. Bouncing the body back up for additional hits is still possible, but if the opponent flips out then the combo is over (infinite combos would, otherwise, run rampant throughout Budokai 2 without the flip out option). Another element you are fighting against is gravity. The more you wail on the opponent’s airborne body, the more it wants to land on the ground. Keeping the body afloat indefinitely, even with moves that should re-pop the body up, is very difficult after the first two combo strings.

Ground Attacks Attacking an opponent while on the ground is tricky in Budokai 2, especially because of the lack of any real height variation system and the fact that moves that do, technically, hit low may be hidden inside a combo string for some characters. If accessing a normal move isn’t a possibility, an energy blast can hit the opponent (as long as you are two to three body lengths away). Some special energy projectiles can also hit a grounded opponent, but will do less damage than if it was performed on a standing target and will more than likely knock the character back on his feet.

Combos into Combos As mentioned in the juggles section (which might need a little bit more explanation here), it is possible to "drop out" of one combo and into another in Budokai 2. Because there is no canceling of moves in the traditional sense in this game (such as Soul Calibur II or Street Fighter II where you cancel the animation of one move into another), you literally have to stop entering the commands for one combo, then start up another one at the moment the frames from the first combo complete. As an example, try this in practice mode with Super Buu (try choosing Dabura or Android 16 as a target): K, K, K, Now wait for the moment when the animation is about to end for his back kick, then quickly enter K, K, K. You should have now juggled the opponent’s body with two combos, setting him up for a third combo, by "dropping out" of the first canned combo. As of right now, this is only effective for juggling or bouncing your opponent’s body. Straight up ground based combos in Budokai 2 do not allow for enough hit stun until the very end of the attack string to simply drop out and restart another combo (and usually by the end they are either knocked away, on the ground, or popped up into the air for a juggle).

Dragon World Instead of the story driven single player experience we found in the original Budokai, Budokai 2 replaces the cutscene driven narrative for a board game-style experience. As with all board games, there are some simple rules and strategies to keep in mind that will carry over into each Chapter. Dragon Radar: These radars should be a priority on your list of things to pick up in each stage, especially during any chapters where locating a Dragonball before an NPC piece is the goal. Luckily, they are not hidden and are often easily within reach of most starting points. Note that Chapter One’s Dragon Radar will automatically reveal where the Dragonball is located on the game board, all other chapters you will have to rely on the radar blip to locate which point contains a Dragonball. Attack Power Up: Snagging these sword icons will increase your character’s attack power. Defense Power Up: Discovering one of these special armor icons will increase your character’s defensive power. Capsules: There are a ton of capsules to be discovered on every board, each unlocking skills, costumes, characters or power ups. So make sure to search around. Zenie: Cold hard cash. Accepted at all finer capsule retailers, specifically Bulma’s skill shop. Extra Turn: A very useful item that will add to the number of turns a specific piece can take (so if your Piccolo piece discovers the extra turn, he will be allowed 2 moves per round instead of 1 until the end of the Chapter/Stage). Free Ride: These spots act like teleports and will send your piece to another spot on the board. Use these with caution, as you will not be able to tell where a specific teleport will take you until you have tried it (which can cost you valuable time). Dende: Stopping on these spots will heal your piece one health square. Battle Conditions: There are some spots on the game board that will modify certain properties in the fighting engine portion of the game if a battle is engaged. Some of these effects include rapidly depleting Ki, depleting health or no defense. Check your spots: Not so much an item, but rather a general rule of thumb. If you can afford a turn, it is always a very good idea to check your location at least once for any hidden capsules, money, or items. The majority of the spots on every board contains at least one hidden item that requires searching, so spare the time and gains some free stuff.

Stage One Stage one’s goal is fairly straightforward: get to the Dragonball before your opponent (by locating it before Nappa and Raditz). Be aware of the constant flow of Saiyamen that will continually spawn onto the map (although you shouldn’t have too many run ins if you stick to your goal, which is locating the Dragonball). Characters that you should be able to unlock here are Yamcha (by defeating Nappa with Tien), Raditz (by defeating Raditz with Goku) and Nappa (by defeating Nappa with Vegeta). [

Stage Two--Defeat Frieza Just because the goal is to defeat Frieza, do not neglect picking up the Dragon Radar and finding the Dragon ball on this stage. You’ll have to contend with Recoome and Captain Ginyu in the northern portion of the stage, while Frieza will chill out and move around the southern half (Frieza will not try and make a move to the northern portion of the map, so you can take your time in taking care of Recoome and Captain Ginyu). The only character you can unlock on this stage is Recoome (by defeating him with Goku) so plan accordingly.

Stage Three--Defeat Frieza (again) In stage three your first major goal will probably be to defeat Vegeta, as this will put him under your control. Of course, look for the Dragon Radar and Dragonball. Frieza will be hanging out in the western side of the stage and will not begin to make a move towards your pieces until A) you defeat Recoome and Captain Ginyu or B) you cross over to the Eastern side of the stage (which can be done quickly via the teleport). Characters you can try and unlock this stage include Frieza (defeat with Goku), Captain Ginyu (defeat with Vegeta), Trunks (defeat Vegeta with Kid Trunks) or Vegeta (defeat with Goku).

Stage Four Part One Objective: Defeat Dr. Gero This is where the stages begin to toss in multiple goals on the same map, so expect each board to take a lot longer to complete. This one in particular is very straightforward; you have to defeat Dr. Gero who will not budge from Spot 9. To get to spot 9, you will have to go through five separate Saiyamen (Purple, Green, Blue, Yellow and Red), although you only really have to go through four if you want to be quick about things (as they also will not budge from their spots). Defeating Dr. Gero with Goku will unlock him.

Stage Four Part Two Objective: Defeat The Androids

Page 71: The GameSpot Complete Game Guide to Dragonball Z: Budokai 2the-eye.eu/public/Books/Strategy_Guides/Calibre Strategy Guides Part 1... · The GameSpot Complete Game Guide to Dragonball

The GameSpot Complete Game Guide to Dragonball Z: Budokai 2

71

After defeating Dr. Gero, Android 16, 17 and 18 will appear on the planet. You only have to defeat one of these characters, as the other two Androids will eventually merge to create Cell. Characters you can unlock here include Android 16 (defeat with Goku), Android 17 (defeat with Piccolo) and Android 18 (Defeat with Krillin).

Stage Four Part Three Objective: Defeat Cell Once the remaining Androids merge you will have to chase down Cell (who will teleport mainly around spots 17, 18, 15, 14, 11, 12 and 1). The key to locking down Cell into one spot is to monopolize spot 1, spot 17 and spot 13. Spot 1 is where Spot 11’s teleport leads, so this will dramatically cut down Cell abusing it. Spot 17 is especially important in that it keeps Cell from being able to use Dende to heal himself back up (plus you have a direct shot to spots 18, 15, and 16). Spot 13 gives you direct access to 12 and 15, combined with monopolizing the other spots, should keep Cell from constantly running away from you. Characters you can unlock on here include Cell (defeat with Goku) and Great Saiyaman (defeat Cell with Gohan). Stage Five Part One Objective: Defeat The Supreme Kai You’re going to start off on the southern portion of the map. This part is very straightforward, fight and defeat Supreme Kai who is waiting at spot 8. This is a good time to collect whatever is available in this portion of the map before fighting Supreme

Stage Five Part Two Objective: Prevent Buu’s Resurrection Preventing Majin Buu’s resurrection will require you to avoid as many confrontations as possible. One way of doing this is moving whoever is closest directly to the cocoon. Cell will eventually move out of the way, where Dabura will make sure to get in the way to battle. As long as you defeat Dabura and keep only one fight occurring between your other pieces and Vegeta/Frieza, you should be able to prevent Majin Buu’s resurrection (note that not stopping Majin Buu’s resurrection isn’t going to end your game, as he is going to be resurrected in the next stage anyways).

Stage Six Part One Objective: Defeat Babidi This is just a trick goal in order to move the plot along, because there isn’t really any way to get to Babidi before he reaches spot 17 (which is where he resurrects Majin Buu).

Stage Six Part Two Objective: Defeat Majin Buu Cell, Vegeta and Frieza will all be resurrected (or teleported) to the northern portion of the map with Majin Buu while capsules spawn in spots 4, 5 and 6. Depending on your personal skill level with the fighting game portion of the game, you will

Stage Seven Objective: Defeat Majin Buu (again) Majin Buu will have become Super Buu by now and will be chasing down Gotenks (which you will be able to control during this stage). If collecting everything on the map is your goal, you can keep baiting Super Buu around the map with Gotenks while your other controllable characters pick up the goodies. Stage Eight Part One Objective: Defeat Majin Buu (collect Pantaras from Supreme Kai) Super Buu is going to be chasing down Gohan, who will have absolutely no way of outrunning him (you can stay away for a turn or two, but Super Buu has more moves than Gohan). So stick to getting Supreme Kai to Goku ASAP in order to proceed to the next part.

Stage Eight Part Two Objective: Defeat Majin Buu (Fuse with Vegeta) Once you receive the Pantaras, head for Vegeta and fuse together. Then catch up to Super Buu and beat him down. Spot 1: Defense Power Up Spot 2: Capsule Spot 3: Defense Power Up

Stage Nine Objective: Defeat Majin Buu For Good This is it, the final stage. Kid Buu will be waiting for you around spots 32 to 35; so don’t bother hitting up any of the teleports that lead there until you’re prepared to take him out. You’re going to have a handful of Saiyamen, miniature Cells, Cell and Frieza to contend with throughout the map (Cell won’t budge from spot 37 and 14, blocking teleport 15, until he is defeated, Frieza will also be holding onto spot 27, keeping both teleport 31 and the Z-sword inaccessible until you defeat him). Dragon Wish Once you’ve defeated Dragon World and successfully collected all seven of the Dragonballs, you will be allowed to wish for a capsule. Depending on your selection, I’d personally recommend taking Badidi’s Space Port above all else if it is available, as this particular mode allows you to unlock a lot of stuff for the least amount of work.

Badidi’s Space Port Stage One--Infinite Battle: A philosophy that works best here for staying alive longer, and thus earning more Kili, is playing conservatively. Don’t take too many risks, stay on the defensive so that you are ready to dodge any kamehamehas or projectile moves (and take advantage of your opponent when he/she misses), and especially don’t experiment too much. Willingness to play an extremely safe offense should work out for the long run here. Stage Two--Infinite Defense: More so than stage one, taking a very defensive stance is about the only way to win this particular event. I only recommend becoming offensive when the situation allows you to knock the opponent onto the ground, buying you some time to adjust your spacing and prepare for the next onslaught of attacks. Stage Three--Hit Marathon: This is where being able to perform a lot of combos, juggles, or other misc. special moves that allow for a lot of hits comes into play--so drop the defensive stance I recommended taking in the first two stages and let loose on your opponent. Note that racking up the number in the hit counter, not necessarily the strength of your attacks, is what is at stake here. Stage Four--Energy Volley: This is perhaps the best stage to use for two reasons. The first being the massive pay off in Kili in exchange for physical effort and secondly, the fact that this particular event will help you work on your energy deflect. Specifically in timing a direct reflect of an energy blast rather than a simple "toss away" reflect.

Cheats Shoplifting: This particular cheat will allow you to unlock almost every skill, character and event in the game. With your memory card in the memory card 1 slot and enough money to purchase a capsule (any cheap old capsule will do), enter the skill shop under the edit skills menu. Buy a capsule then back out of the shop while holding the L1 and L2 buttons down. When you leave, you should have gained any new capsules that were in the shop’s inventory list when you visited. Now simply keep reentering and exiting the shop, holding L1 and L2 down, until your capsule gauge slowly reaches 100%. Note: If you do not purchase a capsule during your first visit to the shop, the game will not prompt to save the new capsules to your memory card when you back all the way out of the edit skills menu. Spinning Master Roshi: If you’re bored and you want to kill some time between load times, you can rotate both analog sticks in order to make Master Roshi spin faster (the quicker you spin the sticks, the quicker Roshi spins). If you want to control his direction, spin with the right analog stick and push the left stick left or right to move him across the screen.
