Come to Israel with Gates of Prayer! Yes, I am fully aware that by the time you read this, the Gates of Prayer Israel trip will have already come and gone. But through the magic of technology, you can come to the congregation and virtually visit Israel as if you were with us on the trip! This year we have been implementing some technological improvements that will enhance our ability to teach, learn, and experience Judaism. If you make your way over to the Brotherhood and Sisterhood Adult Lounge, you will see that the television has been significantly upgraded. The room now features a 70 inch monitor capable of showing the Saints games like never before! Perhaps more importantly, though, it is a touch screen that will allow our students to do some hands on learning of the Hebrew Language and Israeli culture. Earlier this Spring we used this room to allow our Pre-K class to watch Israel attempt to land on the moon. As part of the Zucker Fund Educational initiatives, I was able to bring a 360 degree camera with us during our trip to Israel. This means that everywhere we went, you can come with us! The videos we took will be uploaded to YouTube where they can be viewed with Virtual Reality glasses. All of this is possible at Congregation Gates of Prayer. Next year our students will be able to virtually travel to Israel and you can too! Just come by the synagogue and try on our Google Virtual Reality headset. When God gave the Torah at Mt. Sinai, we are taught that God presented the Torah according to each individual’s ability to understand. In today’s technological age, this means bringing Torah to the latest technology as well. In the coming years, it is our hope that we can maintain our traditions by reading from our sacred and ancient scroll, yet illuminate our experience through innovation. FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISMPresented by

Shir Chadash and Congregation Gates of Prayer

This course, divided into three sections over the course of the year, will provide you with everything you’ve always wanted to know about Judaism. Topics in section two include, Lifecycles, High Holy Days and Biblical History. This section begins on August 21 and continues through September 25. Classes will be split between CGoP and Shir Chadash on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm. For more information, or to enroll, please contact Rabbi David Gerber at [email protected].

J-FLEx is a new way to envision what Religious School can be. Adopting a camp-style format, J-FLEx or Jewish Fun Learning Experiences,

will offer students many paths to connect to Judaism in a way that is meaningful to them. With three 30 minute Experiences, including Technology, Art, Jewish Culture, Hebrew and more, plus cabin time to socialize and make

connections with other “J-FLExers” and counselors, J-FLEx will expose our children to the variety of Jewish life. We believe that with diversity in

programming, our children will discover a stronger personal connection to Judaism. J-FLEx starts on September 15th.

You can register your child(ren) for J-FLEx on our web page or in the Temple or Religious School office.

Words from Miriam Latter on her recent trip to Israel with Rabbi Gerber...

My trip to Israel was fantastic, amazing and I found my faith again. To be in a country where most people are Jewish, which was founded for the Jewish people, was utterly cathartic for me. We traveled as individuals and came home as family, each experiencing the same. Our travels took us to Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jaffa, and Jerusalem. We saw Mount Scopus, where we read the Torah and said a Shehecheyanu prayer to prepare for our stay in Jerusalem. Shopping was a highlight in Safed, as was meeting an Ethiopian Jewish woman at Kibbutz Evron, attending Friday night Shabbat services at Congregation Kol HaNeshama, going to Hell and back, participating in Havdallah. The Kotel (Western Wall) was especially moving for me. Celebrating Shavuot in Jerusalem was eye opening. Ascending Masada and going to Ein Gedi Nature Reserve was simply beautiful. Before going to Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Center we heard from Dr. Rachel Korazim, who emphasized

what we were about to see. The Museum was hard but necessary for us. The memorial for all the children killed was especially hard. The next day was a trip to Beit Guvrin to be an archaeologist for the day. Then our farewell lunch at Kibbutz Palmach-Tzuba and then our Chocolate Workshop was great. After Steven died, and then my stroke, my faith was really tested. For a long time I felt that God did not exist because my life had been turned upside down. But the trip to Israel restored my faith. If you have never been, go with Rabbi Gerber on the next trip. You will never regret it.
