A DREAM HAS COME TRUE!
It is with great excitement and heartfelt gratitude
that we can report on Tuesday, 7 February 2012
the dream of a school hall became a reality. The
prospect of a multi-purpose hall is being made
possible by Renico Construction who have
committed themselves to the building of a hall for
the school. In partnership with other companies
Renico is turning a once vacant piece of ground
into a construction masterpiece.
The progress is closely observed by curious staff
and learners who are so excited about the promise
of a school hall in which activities such as
dancing, singing, concert practices and sport can
take place.
Unfortunately the completion of the school hall
project requires a lot of funds and for the purpose
of equipping the hall The Gateway School will,
once again have to rely on the benevolence and
openheartedness of the community.
The progress of the project can be viewed on the
following websites:

Melekea Mongale, one of our senior learners, received his drivers license! We
know that it is no easy task and that dedication and hard work resulted in this ac-
complishment. Well done, we are very proud of you!
Nico Jones, one of our
senior learners, worked
diligently painting the
boards in the audiovisual
room. Thank you to Nico
for all his hard work. We
are convinced he is as

Vocational Training and Transition Planning
Open Labour Market
As part of The Gateway School’s vocational training programme, learners are
selected from the school and placed in various businesses in the surrounding
area. The learners depart from the school every Thursday morning and return
to the school at half past twelve. The learners participating in the open labour
market this year are:
The learners are all very proud of their new jobs and they thoroughly
enjoy their work. They have all shown excellent progress in adapting to
the new surroundings and the working life. Ms Louise Hancock is re-
sponsible for placing the learners in the various businesses. Regular
visits are done to ensure that the learners excel in their placements and that
they receive the necessary support.
Internal School Tasks
The first term of the new year has flown past and the learners have shown re-
markable skill when completing their school tasks. Initially the learners strug-
gled with their tasks as athletics, cricket and swimming took up a lot of their time,
but now they have mastered their various school tasks. On Monday morning at as-
sembly the learners who excelled at their tasks are given a voucher to use in the
school’s coffee shop.

On Wednesday 22
February 2012 the
West Rand School
invited the physically

The day was enjoyed by all who attended and our
learners achieved excellent results. A very big thank you to all the helpers
who escorted the learners and in particular to Lucky Mathebula, one of our
learner’s parents, who accompanied the learners and assisted during the
events.

Tuesday 14 February at The Gateway
School. The learners all wore shades of red

PREFECTS’CAMP Our 2012 prefects went on a midweek camp to
Buffelspoort Holiday Resort. They had hours of fun in
the pools,
splashing about
and engaging
in water games.
They
challenged each other
to games of Putt-Putt and the trampo-
line revealed some agile gymnasts. A small con-
ference room served as a Skills Training Venue
and the local restaurant took care of their appetites
by serving delicious meals.
Lindy from “Just Foot-
prints” visited the learn-
ers and even slept
over one night.
A huge “Thank
you” to Mr Jacques
Pretorius, Ms Karen Smith and Aunty Marge for their share in
making this camp so successful.

Its not only children that grow, parents do too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are
watching us to see what we do with ours. I can’t tell my children to reach for the sun. All I can do is reach for it myself.— Joyce
