Chapter 1

The Gatlin FamilyVirginia and North CarolinaAccording to English and Welch surnames by Bardsley the name of Catlin - Gatlin - Gatling have

the same origin. The Crest as given by Fairbairn is a Lions head erased and collored and lined - Plate 7 - Crest 10.

I. Emigrant John Gatlin born about 1616, died after 1698. This John Gatlin is the first of the Gatlin name to appear in Virginia in the land grant office. He evidently settled about 1636 in Nansemond County and Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

In Cavaliers and Pioneers of Virginia (By N. M. Nugent) p. 116 Vol. I. is the record of a patent to Delamunday with the following statements, "Lawson assignment to Delamunday who states his land was bought of John Gatlin". "William Dawson, planter of Isle of Wight, assigned the above patent to said Gatling of the same County 2 May 1637. "

In the same book, p. 47, John Bridges, 250 acres in Warrisquick County. 13 September 1636, joining to the North side of his former land, abutting the Northwest side of Warrisquick River and into the woods Northwest by North, 50 acres for his per adv. Note: 12 August 1663, this patent was made over in John Gatlin, his name.

In patent Book 6, p. 40 for period 1666-1679, John Gatlin 450 acres in Nansemond County on a marsh of Chuckatuck Creek over against Mage Dawson's land and lying along Gibson's line for transportation of nine persons.

Patent Book 6, p. 460. To John Gatlin 250 acres in Nansemond County, this land formerly granted to John Bridgers and lately found to Elizabeth, his mother, 28 October 1672.

From Seventh Century Isle of Wight County, Virginia, page 147, dated Nov. 10, 1676 - "Received letter from Governor per Colonel Morrison and sent a proclamation to Nansemond County, Virginia, on the 15th. Sent Proclamation to Isle of Wight County. The gentleman from Accomac desired men. On the 16th sent Mr. Kearney to speak with Mr. Gatlin (John Gatlin - only Gatlin old enough) and a yawl to meet him at Nansemond. 21st - Mr. Kearney came and desired we should not attack at Nansemond. Mr. Kearney and Mr. Gatlin went at night to fetch Colonel Dews home," Also see pages 580 - 659 - 681.

(These were happenings during Bacons Rebellion - said to be forerunner to the American Revolution)

John Gatlin had a son William. This notation from William and Mary Magazine, Vol. 7, page 243 in the Will of Colonel John Bridgers Oct. 18, 1683 - "To my son Samuel Bridgers, the plantation bought by me of John and William Gatlin where John Cook now lives. "

John Gatlin went to North Carolina by 1683. From N. C. Historical and Genealogical Register - Vol. I-IV. page 613 filed at Edonton. North Carolina:

Joseph Chew and wife Elizabeth deed to John Gatlin land on west side of Richa Hock Creek, March 15, 1683. Test Thomas Cullen, Jr. and William Gatlin. 1698 John Gatlin 200 acres of land for transporting 4 persons to Virginia. This land lying in Nansemond County, Va. near Mr. Walter Beasley.

Book 7, p. 90 to William Gatlin, 280 acres in Nansemond County, on his own line and the line of Cornsoloe and William Collin’s line, for the transportation of 6 persons. 23 April 1681.

John and William Gatlin sold their land to Col. John Bridgers before 1683. In "William and Mary Magazine ". Vol. 7. p. 243, is a will of Col. John Bridgers, 18 October 1683-86 "To my son, Samuel Bridgers, the plantation bought by me of John and William Gatlin where John Cook now lives.

William Gatlin was witness to deed of John Gatlin in N. C. in 1683. Deed filed at Chowan County, N.C. , proof that William Gatlin went to Chowan County, N. C.

Among the early North Carolina records is a deed recorded in Deed Book W, p. 282, Chowan County. North Carolina. "Jacob Odam of Chowan County for 106 lbs of tar at Collin's landing in Virginia (Nansemond) by William Gatlin, a certain tract of land at a marked tree in Mill's Swamp on Beaver Dam Branch, extending to Collins corner tree: then to the line of Moses Odam then to Moses Hare, etc., said land granted by patent to Jacob Odam on 13 August 1714," Test: Samuel Herring, Charles Mores and William Gatlin. Recorded 25 August 1733

(N.C. History & Gen. Reg. Book 1. p . 109)

The following records indicate that William Gatlin, son of John Gatlin the emigrant had two sons, namely:

3. III (1) William Gatlin. Jr. . born circa 1678 in Virginia. Died North Carolina (See Later).

4. III (2) Edward Gatlin II, born circa 1680 in Virginia. Died 1727, Craven Co. , N.C., in the Precinct of Bath.

Bertie County formed from Chowan Co., in 1722.

The earliest Gatlins in North Carolina came in from Virginia. In the Land Grant Office, Richmond, Virginia, Book 5 p. 59, is a grant of land 250 acres on the North side of Warrisquick River to John Gatlin, the said land being formerly granted to John Bridgers, This Grant is dated August 21st, 1653. In Grant Book 8, p, 252, dated 1680, William Gatlin and William Oldis were given a grant of land together.

In the North Carolina History and General Register, p. 195, Book 2. is a petition for protection against the Indians, signed by Edward Gatlin. This petition is undated. In 1713, William Gatlin was a witness to a deed in Chowan County, North Carolina, and in the year 1747. a road was made from his house. On the 22nd of June 1722, John Gatlin conveyed to John Edwards, 258 acres of land on Morratuck, South side of Welsh River - Book 2, p. 145. On 25 October 1733 in Chowan County, North Carolina, Deed Book W, p. 282, Jacob Odam conveyed land to William Gatling and the conveyance was witnessed by Samuel Herring and William W. Gatling.

This William Gatling is apparently the Gatlin who married Charity Goodman, granddaughter of Henry Goodman and whose will appears in Gates County, dated 1788 (N. C. History and General Reg.). His children were: sons, John, William, Edward and George, his grandsons, Edward, son of John, and Miles, son of John.

Deed Book 1, p. 87. Benjamin Hill. Attorney for David Vincent of Bertie, conveys to William Gatlin of Bertie Etc. , deed registered 26 October 1743. Witnesses: Edward Gatling, William Taylor and William Bynard.

In 1713, William Gatlin was a witness to a deed in Chowan County. N. C., and in the year 1747. a road was made from his house. John Gatlin of Nuse conveyed to John Edwards, 258 acres of land on Morratuck, South side of Welsh River - Book 2. p. 145.

On 25 October 1733 in Chowan County, North Carolina, Deed Book W, p. 282, Jacob Odam conveyed land to William Gatling and the conveyance was witnessed by Samuel Herring and William W. Gatling.

Mill's Swamp is in what is now Gates County, North Carolina, according to the N.C. History & Gen. Reg. , Book 1, p. 106-116. Beaver Dam Swamp was at or near the Gates County line on Warwick Swamp. (N. C. History & Gen. Reg., Book 1, p. 6, and Book 2, p. 284).

William Gatlin II, who bought the land of Jacob Odam is evidently the son of William who received the grant of land on the William Collin’s line in Virginia in 1680. He apparently had a son, William III, born by 1702, died in Gates County. in 1788, married Charity, the granddaughter of Henry Goodman. William Gatlin II must have had 2 sons, John, born by 1710 (3) Edward, born by 1706, both died before the 1790 census. John, Edward and William Gatlin (Gatling) were conveying land in Northampton County, North Carolina as early as 1740.

Record More Complete For Service

Elizabeth states that she was Elizabeth Bradley and that she was married to Jesse Gattin at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.

That she has no other records, except those attached. That she knows her husband served in the Revolutionary War as a private, for several years, but

the precise length of his service she does not remember. That he was in the battle of Guilford, and several battles of less importance. That she was married to said Gattin in the early part of the war, but has no recollection of the exact date, but she remembers that their son James was born before the end of the war, and that he was born on the 25th. day of June 1781, as she is informed from an old record in her possession which is hereto attached, that she was never married to any other person. but that she was married in the county then called Bute, and from which she removed at the end of the war. She was about 18 years old when married. It appears from an old record that she was born 8th. Dec. 1759. She states that she is very infirm and lives about five miles from the Court House of Randolph County and is unable to get there without great bodily pain, and that she has not been able to go to the nearest neighbors, who live a few hundred yards from her, altho her son lives a few hundred yards. Sworn to before Michael Cox one of the Justices of the Court of Pleas, and that she made her mark thereto, before me on the 20th of May 1839. Also sworn to before Edward Gattin,. J.P. , on the same date.

M. Cox states that Edward Gattin and Joshua Cox are both credible persons and he believes the statement made by him.

Edward Gattin appears and makes oath that he is the son of Jesse Gattin and Elizabeth Gattin and that be is the fifth child, and that he was born on the 17th. of Dec. 1784, and that the writing on said paper was done by him more than 30 years ago, at the direction of his father and mother and he has no doubt they are correct.

In Bath Precinct 1711 Craven County N, C. Edward Gatlin witnessed will of Ann Smithwick. The will of Furnifold Green 1711 Bath Precinct proves that Ann Smithwick was a step daughter to Furnifold Green, who married Hannah Smithwick who was born by 1675. She Hannah Smithwick in 1696 was witness to a bond in Chowan County with Gatlins - at that time she was probably a widow. Vol. I - IV N. C. Will of Furnifold Green - Bath October 26, 1711Sons Thomas - John - Furnifold. Daughters Elizabeth and Jane Green. Son James - wife Hannah -

Daughter-in-law meaning Step Daughter Ann Smithwick.

The will of Edward Gatlin 1727 Craven County, N. C. mentions wife Elizabeth. The name Furnifold is carried in the Gatlin family of Craven County, therefore it is reasonable to assume that Edward Gatlin's wife Elizabeth had a connection with the Green and Smithwick family.

John-and Edward were living in 1790. (Ancestor of Edward Gatlin of Miss. Pike Co.)

1738 - John Gatlin, Craven County appointed Constable. John Gatlin served as Member of House of Burgess (Colonial and State Records of North Carolina.)

Son of John Gatlin born about 1695 and __________. The sons of John Gatlin, Sr. , are determined by Gatlin receiving grants and deeds in Craven County during that period and by deeds of these Gatlins who conveyed land that was an original grant to John Gatlin, Sr. Three grants about 1738 to John Gatlin and one to William Gatlin.

John Gatlin, Jr., obtained grant Nov. 22, 1738 and June 7, 1739. The following sales of land are recorded in the Craven County Court Minutes, filed in the N. C. Historical Comm. , at Raleigh, N. C. for these years:

1739/40 A sale of land by John Gatlin, Jr., and Mary, his wife is recorded.1739 A deed for sale of land by Rees Price to John Gatlin, Sr.1739/40 A sale of land by. John Gatlin, Jr. , to Nicholas Dison.1746 John and Edward Gatlin were witnesses to a sale of land.1744 A sale of land from John Gatlin to Jonathan Fort.1746 A sale from John Gatlin to Abraham Warren for land is recorded.

1746 A sale of 186 acres of land from Rees Price to Edward Gatlin is proved by the oath of John Gatlin.

6. V (1) John Gatlin, Jr. , born by 1716, married Mary Reel (see later).

7. V (2) Edward Gatlin born about 1715, married Elizabeth Reel.

8. V (3) William Gatlin, born about 1714, received a grant in Craven County 1738. (The next record of a William Gatlin to appear in Craven County was the will of a William Gatlin 1793 who had a brother Lazurus. (The first Lazurus to appear in records of Craven was 1774,) so he is not likely to be the fourth son of John Gatlin, Sr. - son of Edward and Elizabeth of the 1725 will.) (So either William Gatlin died young or went to another county. ) (Untraced)

5. (2) Edward Gatlin 11, born about 1715, married Elizabeth Reel before 1743, son of John Gatlin, Sr., who was son of Edward and Elizabeth (prob. George) of the 1727 Will.

From Craven County Court Minutes filed at Hist. Commission:1746 - A sale of land from Reese Price to Edward Gatlin is proved by oath - John Gatlin - 186

acres. Again Edward & John appear together.

1746 - John and Edward Gatlin are Witnesses to a sale of land in CravenCounty. (Probably sons of John Gatlin, Sr. )

1743 - Whereas Edward Gatlin being intermarried with Elizabeth Reel daughter of Peter Reel this petition prays leave to have an order for her part of her fathers estate, her father being deceased, etc. ; Page 36 - Folio - Inventory of Edward Gatlin Deceased - Estate by Elizabeth Gatlin, Craven County, N. Deed Book 21, p. 7 Lazarus Gatlin and Elizabeth, his wife, convey land to ________Ipock, part of a patent to John Gatlin and by him conveyed to said Lazarus Gatlin - June Court 1774.

Therefore it is concluded, from Wills, Deeds, Petitions, etc. , that Edward Gatlin was son of John Gatlin who was son of Edward and Elizabeth of 1725 Will Craven County. That he was born about 1715 that he was married before 1743 to Elizabeth Reel daughter of Peter Reel - Craven County, N. C. That he died 1763 in Craven County, N. C.

The following are Gatlins taken from the Craven County records who were not sons of John and Mary, brothers of Hardy - They were right age to be first cousins of Hardy and sons of Edward and Elizabeth Reel Gatlin. Some of them were conveying land that had belonged to Edward. The word brother was used by some - thus establishing relationship.

Probable sons of Edward and Elizabeth Reel Gatlin-

This 1815 date is no doubt correct. (Edward Gatlin received grant in 1815 on Clear Creek, Chitto River - home and gin on Clear Creek.)

In 1816 Edward Gatlin is listed as a taxpayer in Pike County. 640 acres of land - 21 slaves - 1 poll.

This Thomas Gatlin no doubt is one of the males over 21 listed in 1816 census of Edward Gatlin. In the early records of Washington County, Mississippi in territorial records - a Major and Thomas Gatlin are listed with Edward Gatlin 1803-1809. They were grown men. Thomas had a small family. It could be that this young Thomas is the son of that Thomas, who perhaps had died, and Edward brought him to Pike County with him.

Note also a Major Gatlin, appears in tax rolls of Pike County in 1825-27. He is not proven as a son of Edward and Elizabeth either, This Thomas was born by 1793, too old to be a child of Edward and Elizabeth who married 1796. He received a grant of land in Pike County in 1816. He appears on tax rolls from 1816 - until 1835. That year 1835 - a Thomas Gatlin appears in Hinds County, Mississippi. A Major and Thomas appear in Itawamba County, Mississippi in 1841.

Last record in Pike County on Major - 1827.Last record in Pike County on Thomas - 1835.

From Mr. Casey's Amite County Records, Bk. 2 from Rev. William Winan Diaries, 1812-1820, Amite and Wilkinson County, data - p. 519, Fri. 24 - Sat. 25, Jan. 1823.

"Fri. 28 - Rode to Sister Kennon's. Went 40 miles to Bro. Tucker, etc.

"Wed. 29 - Rode to Bro. Gatlin's 14 miles. The first 4 miles were guided and accompanied by Sister M. Eppes, a young woman who appeared as perfectly at ease while treading the narrow paths of thickest undergrowth with me. although almost a stranger, as she could if we had been talking together in a crowded drawing room. Alas, that any of us should ever betray a confidence so freely reposed in the integrity of our sacred character, and yet how frequently are the recent instances of that treachery. Of Bro. Gatlin's family the greater part were the living of inveterate disease for which I can imagine no good reason but to the vicinity of Bro. Gatlin's mill pond is full of decaying trees. I conceive this sufficient to account for the sickness of a large neighborhood. (Either he seems to leave out words or the copier does.)

"Feb. 22 - Saw Mr. Wms - a mere whiskey container nearly consumed by the acrimonious deposite. Very unpleasant domestic affair today. (Wonder what?)

"On Sun. snow fell two inches deep. Dined at Dr. Anderson's and then rode to Bro. Bonner's 10 miles. (Note - Dr. Anderson, son-in-law of Edward Gatlin.)

"Mon. 10th. Rode to Bro. Gatlin's where a small congregation which I preached to, and Bro. Gatlin off at his gin when he knew my haste to get on, so I gave a cutting reproof which took effect and made him resolve that he would never again neglect his duty for things of this

world. Went on to Monticello 10 miles. Put up at Dr. Anderson's. "

Gatlin Tax Rolls of Pike County1816 - 1835

1816 - Edward Gatlin is listed as a taxpayer. He is listed with 640 Acres of land - 21 slaves and 1 poll (grant received in 1815).

Thomas Gatlin received a grant of land in Pike County in 1815. See map of Range 8 Pike County.

I, Eva Loe McDuffie, made a trip to Pike County, June 24, 1952 Where I was able to locate the old Edward Gatlin family burial ground, and the old original home site of Edward Gatlin. Mr. John Reeves age ninety eight - was of much help to me. He signed the following affidavit:

I, John Reeves, aged 98 born in Pike County, Mississippi, being of sound mind and memory do hereby certify that I have always heard that Edward Gatlin (called Ned) came to Pike county among the first settlers. I have always heard that he was the father of James and William Gatlin whom I knew well. He had a son John also whom I think moved to Amite County, Mississippi. I have also heard that

33

Page 34: The Gatlin Family of America - East Carolina Roots · Web view(James Gatlin executor See Miss Delamas Letter) Edward Gatlin, son of John and Mary Gatlin and brothers of James, Thomas

the said Edward had other sons who moved away from Pike County. I do not recall ever having heard their names or where they moved when they left here.

I remember the old Edward Gatlin family burial ground where he and some of his family and connections were buried. It is located about five miles east of McComb on the Quinns Bridge Road and on the hill west of the home of A. C. Reeves, Jr. , and at a point which touches the road. This is West of the Jones school house and on the same side of the road.

I can also remember the old house which I have always been told that Edward Gatlin who came to Pike County in about 1815 among the first settlers built. It is located about two hundred yards off the Quinns Bridge road almost directly across from the old Edward Gatlin family burial ground. Near it stood an old gin which Edward Gatlin owned at one time.

Some years later James (called Colonel Jim) Gatlin moved the old original house to the location where it now stands and where Mr. Tony now lives. This place is commonly called the Crawford Place.

I went to this house. It is a house built of hand hewn lumber and ceiled inside with plaster - part of the original house has been torn down. House built 1815.

Mr. Tony bought this house from Mr. Crawford in 1918. Prior to that Mr. McGhee heir who had abstract back to 1879. That year the court house burned.

I, Eva Loe McDuffie, located another cemetery known as the Gatlin Cemetery. Just two 1/2 miles from McComb. This is where William Gatlin's (Born 1818 - son of Edward born 1763) family is buried. It is now in the middle of a field. I did not visit this cemetery. It is near what used to be the Old Friendship Baptist Church. It is commonly called "Gatlin's Cemetery".

2. (5) Colonel James L. Gatlin born 1811 in Mississippi, son of Edward Gatlin and Elizabeth Smith Gatlin.

Colonel James L. Gatlin was born 1811 in the South Eastern part of Mississippi in Wayne or Greene County. In 1815 he moved to Pike County with his parents. He was married to Rosalba Wells, born 1814 in Mississippi, married in 1832 to daughter of Nathaniel Wells a Revolutionary soldier who was born in Orangeburg District S. C. This marriage record is on page 100 of Mr. Casey's book "Amite Court Records". Luke Connerly in his book History of Pike County says they were married at the Old Wells Homestead near Johnson Station North of Summitt, Mississippi. Colonel James Gatlin had seven sons in the Confederate Army. Four were killed. In 1833-56 James L. Gatlin appears in the Pike County records. He appeared in Amite County in 1854. Following the census, court records, History of Pike County by Luke Connerly - and Amite County Court Records by Casey. It is concluded that Colonel James Gatlin had at least eight children.

Only two sons appeared to have issue - namely Zebulon and Nathaniel. It is concluded also that in their old age James and Rosalba lived with their son Nathaniel Gatlin in Pike County. See 1880 Census. James died in 1897.

The records of Colonel James Gatlin speak for themselves. See his tax records under Edward Gatlin. See his 1860 census record property appraised at $33, 000. His son Zebulon's property in 1860 appraised at $15, 500 - John B. $9, 500. Yet after the Civil War he had lost four sons and the value of his property reduced to $1, 624. This is a typical story of a Southern gentleman during the Civil War period.

James L. Gatlin was not listed in 1850 census of Pike County or Amite County, Mississippi.

James Gatlin in his will filed April 1801 in Craven Co. N. C. , mentions sons James Jr. and Alfred, (Alfred was being highly educated.) Craven Co., N. C. Will Book D page 116, children named.

Note James Gatlin, Jr. died May 15, 1818. Green Co. Georgia, Will Book___page ______.

Children named were Radford, Gilbert, Garrett, Sidney, Nancy, Bessy, (Mary Polly Arnold), Radford Gatlin and Richard Asbury, executors.

Marriage of Radford Gatlin. On June 5, 1818, Greene County, Ga., Radford Gatlin and Eliz. Daniel were married. He is

probably the Radford Gatlin who went to Tennessee for whom Gatlinsburg. Tennessee is named.

James Gatlin in his will filed 1801 Craven Co. , N.C., page 116 mentions daughter, Betsy.Elizabeth Gatlin died unmarried - mentions nieces Polly West, Hollon Green, Mary Ball and

brother Alfred.

The foregoing will and record prove that James Gatlin, Sr. ,who died 1801. Craven County had the following children:1. Sidney Gatlin West2. Hollan Gatlin West - (Green) 2nd,3. Mary Gatlin "Polly" Hall - (Lamb) 2nd.4. Betsy (Elizabeth Gatlin never married)5. James Gatlin. Jr. died 1818 in Georgia, Greene Go.6. Alfred Gatlin.

The following deeds were signed by the children of James Gatlin as heirs of Hardy Gatlin, Names of James Gatlin's children underlined.

A deed between John Gatlin esquire, Lewis C. Bryan and wife Mary, William Mosely and wife Louisa, T. A. Green and wife Hollon, Reuben White and wife Teressa, Jesse Chapman and wife Esther, Sarah Chapman John Harris for himself and Stephen Harris deceased, John Gatlin, Jr. , Edward Gatlin and William Harris of Craven Co. . N. C.

Lewis C. Bryan married Mrs. William Croom. nee Mary Gatlin 8/5/1811.

(22) Deed Book dated Feb. 14, 1804 Craven Co. Deed Book 36, page 368.Weeks Chapman and Sarah Chapman. his wife; Jesse Chapman and Esther Chapman, his wife,

Frederick Baker and Louise Baker.

The underlined are children of Edward Gatlin, brother of Hardy.

(23) Deed Book 51 - page 275. Dated 1823. Heirs of Hardy Gatlin sell to Y. Lafinghouse.Among those signing Esther Chapman, daughter of Edward Gatlin and John Chapman, grandson

of Edward Gatlin.

The above proves that Hardy Gatlin's other brother was named Edward. Therefore Edward was the father of (1) Levi, (2) Stephen, (3) Edward, (4) John, (5) Mary who married William Tooke, (6) Elizabeth who married James Roach, (7) Esther who married Jesse Chapman. (8) Sarah who married Weeks Chapman, (9) Louise who married Frederick Baker.

The following deed would indicate that Edward Gatlin, brother of Hardy bad only nine children and that Hardy Gatlin had 4 brothers and 1 sister.

(24) Deed Craven Co., N. C.July 21, 1807 - Edward Gatlin of Washington Co. . Miss. Terr., seized and well entitled to one

undivided thirty sixth part of all the lands, tenements and real estate of which Hardy Gatlin died seized etc. for 25 lbs. and 17 shillings. Witnesses B. Woods and John Harris.

4 brothers and sisters of Hardy and nine children for Edward, Sr.. deceased would give Edward of Miss. 1/36 (4 x 9 = 36) interest in the estate of Hardy Gatlin.

The above deeds plus the foregoing wills of James and Thomas Gatlin and other deeds including a deed filed April 2, 1805 Greene Co. Ga. (Heirs of Mary Gatlin Harris That - Hardy Gatlin had a brother named Edward, - and that the following were not the children of James, Thomas or Mary and are therefore the proven children of Edward and Elizabeth Gatlin: They are:

The following Mississippi Census Records indicate that Edward Gatlin:

1816 Census Pike Co,, Miss.

Edward Gatlin2 males over 21 (One was Edward?) The other male over 21 is probably Thomas of 1820 Census.3 males under 21 James, Alfred and John2 females over 21 (One was Elizabeth)4 females under 21 (But who was other)

Edward Gatlin did not marry Eliz. Smith until 1796 - yet there were 2 children born before 1796 - one girl and one boy.

1820 Census Pike Co. , Miss.52

Thomas Gatlin, Pike Co. , Miss.1 male under 101 male 26-452 females under 102 females 16-26

The above Census Records make it appear that Edward had been married before and prior 1794 to have had 2 children over 21 in 1816. Either that or he was rearing children of Thomas or Major Gatlin who were in Green County. Miss. with him in 1805.

Thomas there in 1809.

If the conclusion is reached that he had been married before, the following record might be of interest.

THE GATLINS IN LOUISIANA

Edward Gatlin born 1824, Pike County, Mississippi.

2. (9) Edward Gatlin, son of Edward and Elizabeth Gatlin, born 1824, Pike County, Mississippi. Died 1909, Echo, Louisiana. Married Susan Young, born July 28, 1830, Died April 4, 1890, at Jackson Parish. Married July 5, 1847 at Pike County, Mississippi.

Edward Gatlin and Susannah Young Gatlin left Pike County in 1864. Edward Gatlin served in the Confederate Army as a home Guard in Pike County, Mississippi. In 1864 the rumor spread that slaves would not be freed in Texas. Tradition says that Edwards eyes were too bad to fight, and at that time he was forty years old so he was selected as the one to carry the slaves of the Young’s and Gatlins to Texas. He had arrived there by 1865 as his daughter, Louisa was born in Texas. Edward Gatlin purchased land on the Brazos River some of the most fertile land in the world but at that time a very unhealthy country. His oldest son John died there also his brother-in-law Wiley Young who had gone with him. This upset him to the extent that he left his land and all he possessed there and started back to Pike County. Mississippi. He never got back, however, but made his home in Jackson Parish, this country which so clearly resembled his native land. There he built a two story house which burned and where later Kearney Lewis and his family lived. In 1890 Susannah, his wife, died. She is buried in the Old Jonesboro Cemetery - on her tomb is this:

Mrs. Susan GatlinBorn July 28, 1830Died April 4. 1890

After her death Edward went to Echo, Louisiana, south of Alexandria. He made his home with his son Edward who was a planter there. Edward Gatlin died 1909 at Echo and is buried near the home of his son Edward.
