1/2S - Houses in Our Community
1/2 S has been very busy learning about our communities. We looked at the different types of house we live in and then created an art piece in the style of “Folk Art” inspired by the artist Heather Galler. She draws real life objects and then adds patterns and bright colours to them. We tried to draw a houses that represented the style we live in. We each included a writing piece about our favourite room in our house and why we liked it so much. Please enjoy!
My Super Duper Room
My room is my favourite room because I work in
there. And not just that no, no, no, and no. Also
what I do is watch t.v. and write. I especially like to
go to bed and play Barbies with my sister. Also I sit
in my room and calm down. I LOVE my bedroom and
my family too. By Adrianna
My Awesome Bedroom
My favourite room is my bedroom because I like to sleep
and I like to play on dad’s cell phone in my room. I like to
read and I have lots of books in my bedroom. I have a t.v.
and a comfy bed and I like to jump on my bed. My bed is
green and red and it is medium. By Andrew
My Moonlight Living Room
My favourite room is the living room. It is noisy. It is
where we watch the Jets win and play with
shimmering toys, draw pictures, play Minecraft,
sleep with my dog, and hug my mom and dad. I
LOVE to do my home reading and play with my
toys. What is your favourite room? By Kelly
Mark Your Calendars!!

Festival du Voyageur
All the grade 4s and 5s got to step back in
time and experience what it was like to be a
voyageur in Canada on their visit to Festival
du Voyageur. They learned about the ways
the Voyageurs would travel, by snowshoe,
canoe, dogsled and travois. They held on
tight as they were pulled by a horse on a
sleigh ride. Some students learned about
how maple syrup is made and they got a
tasty treat after! Throughout the day the
students got to see the incredible snow
sculptures, they got some physical activity
by going on a toboggan slide, and they
played traditional Voyageur games. Everyone
got to experience live French music and they
learned a traditional French dance. Many
students were inspired to wear the ceinture
flechee and a toque rouge to look and feel
more like a voyageur! What a fun filled day!
3/4S Explore Manitoba
Mr. Bender’s grade threes and fours have been learning about Manitoba’s past! We are exploring the people that used to live on the Manitoba prairies up to 1000 years ago called the “People of the Plains”. These Aboriginal peoples lived in tipis and hunted the buffalo to survive. We will soon be studying how the natural environment affected their way of life…
Library News During I Love To Read month, the staff and students participated in a variety of activities in an effort to promote the importance of reading and literacy. As well as reinforcing the importance of literacy, I love to read month was a terrific opportunity for us to engage the community and to build school spirit. In February, Bertrun E. Glavin School was host to Doug Speirs from the Winnipeg Free Press, Winnipeg Blue Bomber, Teague Sherman, Big Daddy Tazz, Comedian, Sheena Grobb, musician, Matt Wiebe, MLA, Maralee Caruso, CTV news anchor, Nic Demski, Saskatchewan Rough Rider and Child Entertainer, Al Simmons. Fortunately, Every class had a celebrity read to them. The celebrity readers chose books that often represented their field of interest or occupation. This opened up the floor for many questions about the particular field of interest and career choices. This was a great opportunity for the students to find out information and learn to ask questions. I love to read month is a chance to have fun. We believe in the importance of promoting and reinforcing literacy skills and recognize how important it is for kids to know that the skills they develop through curricula are important lifelong skills. Through the participation of the celebrity readers the importance of reading, writing, viewing, representing, speaking and listening were further reinforced. Children saw firsthand that these essential skills are used every day in various careers. Our students will remember their interactions with these people who took time out of their busy day to share their love of reading. Happy reading! Ms. Loewen ~ Teacher Librarian
Music Notes!
On Thursday, February 11th, our 5A & 4/5 T classes went to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Concert at the Centennial Concert Hall with their classroom teachers (Ms. Krahn & Mrs. Penner) as well as Mrs. Sulymka, our Music teacher. The theme of this year's concert was: Orchestra Games, based on this summer's Olympic Games to be held in Brazil. Here are some of the students' reflections after attending the Concert: Noises Around the Building: Hello! Charles here and we went to the Concert Hall. We sat on the balcony1, which is the first balcony. We listened to all sorts of music from around the world. There were instruments like drums, harp, trumpets, a "mega flute," guitar and the violins. Well there were more instruments but the drums were the loudest! There was a song we listened to called, "Go the Distance." Can you guess what movie it was from? The movie was "Hercules"! Well, that's all for today. See you next time! ~ Charles (4T) Our trip to the WSO (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra): The theme song for the Orchestra Games is stuck in my head! My favourite instrument player is the guy who plays the timpani. My teacher's favourite instrument was the harp. You probably think that it's like an angel! But it's a 6'9" TALL GUY!!! We got the best seats in the house! ~ Ethan (5T) Hi, my name is Meagan and I'm going to tell you about the WSO! If you're wondering what WSO stands for, it stands for Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra! It was AMAZING! My favourite piece was the one from Brazil. It was so energetic, it made me want to get up out of my seat and start dancing! My favourite instrument was those giant drums. In my opinion, they made the songs. If I were you I would get up and get some tickets!! Trust me, you'll LOVE it! ~ Meagan (5T) Hi, my name is Gurshan. Thank you for inviting us. I really enjoyed it. My favourite song was "Go the Distance." The people that played the violins were so good. I wonder if I could play like that. ~ Gurshan (5A) Dear WSO, Thank you for inviting us to this lovely performance. It had such powerful, energetic songs! I love that we travelled all over the world. It was fun to learn new songs and about the writers that wrote the songs. My favourite part was when we travelled to Russia. I loved the dancers. They were so amazing! If I was playing an instrument, I would love to play a trumpet. ~Alisa (5A) Thank you for giving us the privilege to go. As I was listening, I felt like I was on stage singing. My favourite part was the ending on "Go the Distance." Thank you for taking us. I can't wait to go again! ~ Olamide (5A)

DID YOU KNOW?
Bertrun E. Glavin School has a lost and found bin...and it’s overflowing!!! Items that have been left behind by your children are placed in the lost and found throughout the school year. Our lost and found bin is cleared out three times a year. All items are displayed on tables in the front hallway during student lead conferences. When items are not claimed they are given to charity. Please remember to check the lost and found bin on a regular basis for any items of clothing that you are missing.
Mr. Locken’s Lemonade Party!
Students at Bertrun E. Glavin are enjoying the opportunity to enjoy a cool glass of lemonade while having a conversation with Mr. Locken & students from each of the classrooms from every grade level.
The selection process is simple, students can be recognized for any special effort, accomplishment or act of kindness that stands out in their teachers mind.
Keep working hard and maybe it will be you at the next Lemonade Party!
Call Back System Reminder!!
We have a “call back system” in place to help ensure the safety of our students.
The success of this program rests very much upon the co-operation of parents.

The office has a 24 hour answering machine for your convenience.

ALLERGY ALERT
Bertrun E. Glavin in a NUT FREE School, which includes all tree nuts. Please be advised that our school has students who have severe allergic reactions to nut products. It has come to our attention that some students have been bringing snacks or lunches containing Nutella to school. Nutella does contain Hazel nuts. Thank you for helping to protect those students with allergies by not sending snacks that contain nuts to school.
**Illness and Staying in at Recess** From time to time children are sent to school with bad colds, the flu, or other contagious conditions. This puts other children in their class/ school at risk.
Please do not send an obviously sick child to school with instructions for the teacher to keep them in at recess. Teachers are on recess duty and are not available for indoor supervision of sick children. If your child is too sick to go out for recess it is best they are kept home. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.
