Dear Parents and Students,

From the beginning of week 3 term 2, Ms Knott has taken extended leave. Mr Morrison will be the relieving Deputy Principal and I will be Relieving Principal for the duration of Ms Knott’s leave.

As we approach the second half of Term 2, it’s a busy time for all with the first assessment period concluding in reports and Parent Teacher interviews.

RReeppoorrttss aanndd PPaarreenntt TTeeaacchheerr IInntteerrvviieewwss Year 12 students have received their reports on Friday 17 May and it is anticipated that Year 11 will receive their reports this week. Both years will have their Parent Teacher interviews on Wednesday 5 June in the school hall. I read all reports and I was very impressed at the high level of motivation and focus of our students. Year 12 students are hard-working and engaged and well on track to achieving HSC success. Some students are carrying more than the required 10 units of study required for their HSC and their ATAR. In some cases this is not a problem as some students manage an enormous workload and excel in all of their courses. Others, however, would be well advised to closely examine their performance in all subjects and to shed those units where they are not excelling. This will give these students extra time to focus on their remaining units and optimise their opportunities for success. This is better done sooner rather than later.

Year 11 students have undergone the most challenging transitional change since they began at St George. The demands of senior study, the time management required to fulfil all requirements and the increased standards expected of Year 11 are challenges that seem to have been well met. I was especially impressed with the students who joined us at the beginning of this year. They have quickly adjusted to and are meeting the standards required of our students. I urge all students to carefully read their reports and to put into action the suggestions made by their teachers and to re-set their personal learning goals for the rest of the year. I want to congratulate all students on their reports and to encourage them to strive for their own personal best learning outcomes.

BBuuiillddiinngg FFuunndd As we once again approach tax return time do not forget that all donations made to our building fund are tax deductible. If you wish to make a donation please inform Mrs Mollross so I can ensure you receive a receipt in time to lodge your tax return. The Building Fund has been used in the past to refurbish learning spaces and staffrooms for the benefit of students and staff.

JJooiinntt PP&&CC MMeeeettiinngg Each year we hold a joint P&C meeting with Sydney Technical High School, taking turns to host the meeting. This year the meeting was held at Sydney Technical High School on Tuesday 7 May. The guest speaker was Ms Jennifer Michalski who is the Metropolitan Board of Studies Liason Officer. Her presentation covered the major changes to our educational system, the new Australian Curriculum, Assessments, ATAR and Record of School Achievement and grading.

WWiinntteerr SScchhooooll UUnniiffoorrmm Winter uniform started this week and I would like to ask parents to ensure that students are in correct uniform. On very cold days students are permitted to wear a long black coat provided that it over full school uniform, including the jumper. Students are not permitted to wear black cardigans or jumpers at any time. Skivvies are not part of the winter uniform and should not be worn. I have attached a school uniform information sheet for your information.

UUssee ooff PPuubblliicc TTrraannssppoorrtt Recently I have received some concerns from members of the public about our students when travelling on public transport. Students who have concessional passes, travelling free on public transport, should give up their seat for full fare paying passengers – it is a condition of the public transport passes.

PPrrooppoosseedd CChhaannggeess ttoo TTrraaiinn TTiimmeettaabbllee The transport authority has released a draft copy of the new train timetable to be implemented in October this year. At first glance and from media reports it appears that Kogarah station will have fewer services in the morning and afternoon. This could have a significant impact on our students getting to and from school and create more congestion at an already very busy station. Kogarah station is the main public transport hub for 5 local high schools, St George TAFE and 2 hospitals.

The proposed train timetable is available for public comment and I encourage all parents to have a look at the impact of this timetable on your child and make a comment where appropriate.

OOuuttssttaannddiinngg SSttuuddeenntt AAcchhiieevveemmeenntt Three students have recently achieved outstanding success in the arts field.

Michelle Meng won the State Secondary School Comedy Competition. Michelle entered the competition online through the ABC and was entered into the heats held at Parramatta. Michelle was competing against 9 other performers, mostly from Performing Arts High Schools, in her heat. Michelle won this part of the competition and progressed to the NSW State finals also held at Parramatta. Michelle won the State final which is an outstanding achievement in itself, beating last year’s NSW winner. From here, Michelle was flown to Melbourne (free) to compete in the National Finals, held at the Melbourne Town Hall, against State winners from all over Australia. Michelle received a Certificate of Participation. During the National Finals Michelle was mentored by Matt Okine renowned comedian and Frank Woodley who was the guest judge at the National Finals.

In true St Georgian style several fellow St Georgians accompanied her to National finals to support her. Michelle would encourage and recommend that others have a try at these types of competitions. Congratulations to Michelle on achieving this outstanding honour and performance. Angela Yang won first place in the 16 – 18 years Young Archie 2013 competition from over 400 entries from all around Australia. Angela submitted a highly detailed, realistic portrait into this national art competition and won over the judges with the “honesty” of her artwork. The competition was judged by renowned Australian artist Ben Quilty, who won the 2011 Archibald Prize. What makes this even more impressive is that Angela completed this outstanding work in 4-5 hours. Congratulations, Angela.

Anusha Thomas will be performing as a member of the 2013 NSW Public Schools Drama Company in the performances of “What Are They Like”, written by Lucinda Coxon, at the PACT Centre for Emerging Artists. We wish her every success.

CCoonnggrraattuullaattiioonnss I would like to congratulate the following students for achieving Gold Certificates indicating that they have received thirty Merit and/or Participation Certificates: Clare Cao of Year 10. Sarah Huang, Isabella Pham and Linda Zeng of Year 11.

I would also like to congratulate the following students for receiving Principal Certificates: Helen Chen of Year 7. Jenny Tao (3) of Year 8. Renee Lu (2) of Year 9. Clare Cao (5), Jenny Gu (2), Maggie Lu, Carolyn Tran, Emily Wang (4), Angela Wang and Susanna Wong of Year 10. Isabella Pham of Year 11. Well done to all of these girls and to all who have experienced personal success this term. Yours sincerely Graeme Ponder

eports for Year 12 have been issued and Year 11 will be issued this week. Year 12 need to consider whether they carry all their units

forward to the HSC or make a reduction in order to facilitate more focused study. Year 11 should take the opportunity to work out which units and levels they should be considering for next year. These considerations can be discussed with teachers at the Year 11 and 12 parent teacher evening held in the school hall on Wednesday 5 June. Year 11 girls should be reminded that for the first time their results in the form of A-E grades will be submitted to the Board of Studies for inclusion on their ROSA (Record of School Achievement). Year 10 girls will be making decisions about their HSC course of study at the end of this term. On Monday 24 June there will be a HSC session where the rules of study are outlined for them and advice given on the subjects they might wish to study for 2014/15. There will be an evening session in the school hall for parents of Year 10 girls where HSC rules and procedures, subject selections and university entrance are outlined. The session will be in English in the hall but also in Chinese in the staff common room. We urge all parents of Year 10 girls to attend. Mr Morris

This residential will be run again in 2014 so keep an eye out for further information.]

The following report is by Amelia Mertha Year 12.

hile most of Year 12 probably spent the first five days of the holidays doing everything but the pile of work we were supposed to do,

some of us (plus one student Sydney Girl, four Year 11s from our school, three students from Bethany College and one student from Port Hacking) were at an Environmental Residential camp, for our Duke of Ed in the Wollemi National Park with Ms Duffy and Ms Thodey.

A small part of the camp involved helping the local community and we cut down some blackberry bushes, helped out at the nearby sheep shearing shed, cleaned the community hall where we were staying and also set up cameras along a creek to see if we could get a picture of a platypus.

Although most of us only saw wombat holes, and wombat droppings and a snake skin – Mrs Duffy successfully spotted a platypus, in the flesh. It was the one thing she HAD TO do while we were there so we should all be really happy for her.

We also kayaked, swam and hiked through gorgeous scenery and sat around a campfire under a glittering sky every night.

Our guides, Bill and Amanda from Wild Mobs, were really friendly people and the food was the best camp food I think I’ll ever have. There was plenty of free time to sit in the sunshine or hang in the tents and play ‘Uno’.

Thank you to my gorgeous Year 12 friends who came – Ellie, Renae, Juka, Zoe and Shivika (who is an ex-student but we still count her as a St Georgian.) You were such fun to be with. To the four Year 11s: Scarlet, Fiona, Jasmine and Angel, thank you for being super and putting up with any Year 12 odd-ball behaviour. To Ms Thodey, thank you for helping us around the campsite and being motherly, as always. To Mrs Duffy, thank you for your almost infectious enthusiasm for all things nature-related and organising the 5 days which turned out to be really wonderful.

HHiigghh SScchhoooollss n Thursday 4 April, the inaugural combined Career Information Evening for St George Girls High School and Sydney Technical High

School was held between 6-8pm on the grounds at Sydney Tech High. Year 12 students and their parents were invited to attend the career market and information sessions run by UAC (the University Admissions Centre). Students obtained information on the process of applying to university, bonus points and alternate entry schemes, courses options, scholarships, cadetships, international exchange programs, internships, graduate positions, the labour market and much more…

Throughout Term 2, Year 11 and 12 students and their parents are invited to attend a Career Information Evening at Sydney Boys High School on Tuesday 28 May, between 6 – 8pm and Year 10 students will be involved in an excursion to the Western Sydney Career Expo at Sydney Olympic Park on Thursday 20 June.

There are several career events open to the general public in coming months:

Sydney Morning Herald HSC and Careers Expo Thursday 30 May and Friday 31 May Saturday 1 June and Sunday 2 June 10am – 3pm Royal Hall of Industries, Moore Park www.hscandcareers.com.au

Western Sydney Careers Expo 2013 Thursday 20 June and Friday 21 June, 9am – 3pm

Saturday 22 June and Sunday 23 June, 10am – 3pm Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park www.westernsydneycareerexpo.com.au

AA CCaarreeeerr iinn IITT –– MMiiccrroossoofftt GGiirrllss WWoorrkksshhoopp hen we applied for this workshop, we probably had no idea that all of us would leave with a free water bottle, most of us with

a free USB and some of us with a free LifeCam Cinema (all branded with the Microsoft name). The workshop ran for the whole day (from 9am – 2:30pm) and had three major workshops. It was an entirely ‘all-girls’ event, where nearly all of the guest speakers and hosts were female. The director of Microsoft Australia, Pip Marlow, gave us an impressive presentation about her role in the industry and we soon came to realise that studying/working in the IT sector had absolutely nothing to do with being a ‘geek’ or a ‘nerd’. It was really about passion, design and innovation – what technology can do to better our world and how we can achieve this. I know it sounds rather clichéd, but it was fascinating! To be honest, I don’t even do IPT and never studied ICT, but this workshop really dispelled most of my initial stereotypes about working in the IT industry. The three workshops were all informative and relatively hands-on. We got to play with Xboxes (being the creators, Microsoft has a room FULL of them!) I’m not much of a gamer, but I have to admit playing virtual Fruit Ninja on a big screen was really fun. This activity gave us greater insight into game design and development. Then we grouped with girls from other schools and worked together to design an App, where the only rule was that you had to be creative! The winning group of the competition each won a LifeCam Cinema (well done guys!) Lastly, we listened to a presentation about IT and how getting ‘bad’ marks and not having a university degree or any substantial qualifications did not mean an automatic cut-off from working in the IT industry. It was all about passion – when people recognise your talent, regardless of your academic prowess they will give you an opportunity to prove yourself. So don’t worry. Don’t stress. I definitely recommend future St Georgians to apply for this workshop (even if you’re not completely IT-minded like me). Big thanks to Ms Jospe and Microsoft Australia for organising this event for us – It was very, very worthwhile! Elicia Lim Year 11
