Different types of gemstones come from deposits all over the world, and certain areas specialize in sourcing particular gems.

StonesBurma has been the primary source of rubies for many years, but the stones are also found in Thailand, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, Madagascar, and India. Colombia is responsible for more than half of the world’s emerald mining, and the production rate of emeralds in Zambia is around 20%. Diamonds mostly come from mines in southern and central Africa. Madagascar is well-known for sapphire mining, particularly in deposits around Ilakaka.
