Honor PinThese Girl Scout adults have provided outstanding service to at least two service units or program delivery audiences in a way that furthers the council’s goals. Their service goes

beyond the expectations of the position.

Sandra Cervenka’s more than 35 years of Girl Scout experience lends her a deep understanding of the organization. The troop leader, trainer and school organizer has an abundance of solutions and suggestions. You can count on Sandy for anything Girl Scouts, no matter the community or service unit. As a Project WILD facilitator and council trainer, she is a great teacher for adult volunteers and girls. Sandy leads outdoor training as well as the DreamMakers singing group, and excels at everything in between. While very involved in the community, Sandy always finds a way to lend a hand to Girl Scouts and uses her knowledge of the community to network and recruit. She always allows the girls to take charge to build their leadership skills, and makes it possible for anyone who wants to attend a training to do so. Sandy is said to extol the benefits of Girls Scouts everywhere she goes.

Deborah Fairchild’s hands-on, girls-first approach to outdoor learning and activities has impacted the lives of many Girl Scout troops in the Chicago and Northwest Indiana area. Her love for nature, which she passes on to the girls at every opportunity, spurred her to become an archery trainer and an outdoor trainer. Now, there are more and more volunteers qualified to introduce Girl Scouts to the great outdoors. Never afraid to get her hands dirty, Deb also lobbied for and organized multiple girl-led work weekends to rebuild cabins at Camp River Trails. With her volunteer efforts, Deb honors the values Girl Scouting and helps others do the same.

Angela Foster’s volunteer time with the Girl Scouts of Chicago is marked by her dedication to teamwork. Because of her unique connections with many of the girls in her troop, Angela served as a mentor for many volunteers in her community, helping them build even stronger connections. After leaving her role in the for-profit world for a volunteer stint with Girl Scouts, Angela chose to dedicate her days to the Girl Scouts by joining the staff of the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. She brings her experience to the table to fine-tune and improve the training program. Angela never hesitates before helping her fellow colleagues and volunteers, and is a true team player.

Debra Lucente truly knows that Girl Scouts is a lifelong sisterhood. As a service unit lifetime committee member and record keeper, Debi has had a positive impact on a number of girls and volunteers through her years of service. As the Promise Circle chair for the 100th anniversary celebration, her efforts brought together more than 500 Girl Scouts from all over the area, which resulted in great media coverage. She also coordinates the lifetime scholarship committee and fosters relationships with former recipients so that they are encouraged to stay involved with Girl Scouts beyond graduation. Her other Girl Scout adventures include attending the 100th anniversary singalong in Washington, D.C., leading her service unit encampment for two years, coordinating a mother-daughter spa weekend, and planning World Thinking Day events. Debi is an asset to all the girls and volunteers she’s encountered throughout her many years of service.

Tammy Mathis is a member of the lifetime committee and a service unit manager who has provided years of outstanding service to her service unit, council and community. Her dedication to training is reflected in her innovative work with the virtual training team, bringing training to more leaders and advancing council goals with technology. As a direct result of Tammy’s diligent efforts, countless new leaders have received training that has helped them provide outstanding programming to Girl Scouts. Her contributions have made a lasting impact on leaders and girls who have benefitted from Tammy’s commitment.

Linda Miller truly goes above and beyond to support her colleagues and fellow volunteers with a smile. Doing everything from driving the delivery van to making homemade strawberry jam, Linda is the first to offer to help during the busy cookie seasons. If a question comes in during odd hours or over the weekend, volunteers can count on Linda’s helpful, friendly response. Her energy is high, her spirit sincere, and her belief in the Girl Scout Mission is apparent in every task she undertakes. Linda is a living example of a true Girl Scout and is a person all of her teammates and volunteers trust. Peggy Sinko has impacted generations of Girl Scouts. As a 50-year Girl Scout member, Peggy has served in most every volunteer role possible. She has a deep wealth of experience and insight for adults and girls, and is always willing to share this knowledge. Peggy has a love for outdoors and the unique ability to find adventure and education in all things. She makes the Camporee memorable year after year, and was integral in creating and maintaining the Taste of Camporee, which is now in its fourth year, by doing whatever needed to be done. Peggy has the unique capacity to lead while knowing when to step back and let the girls demonstrate and build their leadership skills. As an avid Cubs fan, Peggy recently earned her camp name of “Ernie” (for Ernie Banks), and is said to always hit it out of the park for the Girl Scouts.

When Kathleen Faulkner said yes to serving as a Girl Scout leader in 1980, she had no idea it would become such a large part of her life. From initiating the Pixie program, present known as Girl Scout Daisies, to teaching girls how to iron on their badges, Kathy is a lifetime Girl Scout. She spent 25 years shaping the girls of Daisy Troop #6, the first Daisy troop in Chicago. She taught them the importance of good deeds and prepared them to be good Brownies and good citizens. Her many Girl Scout memories all revolve around the girls she impacted throughout the years. Kathy is an undeniably dedicated Girl Scout who has led by example for more than 35 years.

Hall of FameHall of Fame Award inductees are adults who have been members for at least 25 years, and in their time have delivered service that far exceeds the expectations of any position to have a

lasting impact on the Girl Scout organization or her/his community. A maximum of 10 people are inducted each year, and this honor may be awarded posthumously.

Rosalyn Varon’s commitment to the Girl Scouts goes all the way back to her childhood, and she has the sash and beret to prove it. As an anchor for ABC7 Chicago and an enthusiastic advocate for Girl Scouts, Roz embraces every opportunity to spotlight Girl Scouts on air. Her interviews have highlighted the Girl Scout Cookie program, called attention to the Girl Scout Gold Award, and recognized Girl Scouts for their service during ABC7’s annual holiday food drives. Through her spirited support of Girl Scouts at every turn, Roz has made a direct impact on the lives of girls and volunteers throughout her area and beyond.

benefits the entire council or Girl Scout Movement as a whole.

Thanks Badge IIThe Thanks Badge II is reserved for adult members, having previously earned the Thanks Badge, whose performance continues to be truly outstanding and benefits the total council or the entire Girl Scout Movement. It honors members whose service is so significantly above and beyond the

call of duty, that no other award would be appropriate.

Donna Marie Advani’s volunteer work with Girl Scouts over the last 20 years has proven her boundless dedication to the girls in Service Unit 406 and beyond. Whenever possible, Donna Marie is there to lend a hand, listen to a colleague, and make the best of every situation. She works tirelessly to help introduce girls to aviation through the WINGS scouting opportunity, collaborating with the council, local airports and community leaders to help Girl Scouts soar. Donna Marie’s activities, support and knowledge make her indispensable to her team and a valuable role model to her girls.

Selena Randecker has served the Girl Scouts for almost 15 years, acting as a troop leader for two troops, a trainer for the council, a regional volunteer for Fall Product and Cookie Programs, and the service unit manager for Service Unit 406. She tackles every role with enthusiasm and is always ready to help her fellow volunteers. Selena goes above and beyond with every project—from helping 120 service units as a regional volunteer, to managing a cookie cupboard in her home, to leading service unit troops for girls who otherwise would not have access to Girl Scouts. Selena truly embodies what it means to be a Girl Scout.

Dynamic and IncredibleStaff of the Year (D.A.I.S.Y.)

This award recognizes the outstanding service of a staff member who’s been employed for at least three years and whose efforts to achieve council goals have resulted in the development of partnerships with volunteers and/or community leaders, impacting at least one service unit or

program delivery audience.

Carl Canale’s inimitable patience, friendliness and willingness to help make him an asset to the Girl Scout community. Carl is known for his lightning-fast responses to calls and emails, helpful explanations, and general support to Girl Scout volunteers and troops during some of the busiest times of the year. His mastery of the tambourine, as evidenced at the Volunteer Kickoff, is also unparalleled. Carl’s positive, can-do attitude is more than just that – he inspires those around him to always try even harder and do even more, and for that, he is recognized today.

Julie Jungbauer’s warmth and grace surrounds everything that she does, particularly in her support of service units. Her big smile and welcoming personality help encourage leaders to join in and make Girl Scouting a life-long commitment. Julie’s not only a service unit support specialist, she is also a wealth of Girl Scout knowledge, a comforting figure for new volunteers, and a cheerleader for seasoned volunteers. Through her commitment, Julie propels the Girl Scout Mission forward with a smile.

Years of Service

Annette Cameron or “Auntie Net” has served in almost every possible position as an adult Girl Scout. She continues to be involved with five troops and serves as cookie person for all of them. She remains involved because the girls are “So sweet.” In addition, her friends tell her she cannot quit since she is a lifetime member. Annette worked at day camp for more than 20 years and is only not there now because her doctor says she cannot go to camp. Annette recently met with members from her first troop of girls (who are now ages 71, 69 and 65), and they recounted memories from their early scouting days. Many of the memories revolved around camp experiences, including the cleaning of the latrines. Annette has served as a board member, neighborhood chairman, council delegate, and outdoor trainer.

70 YEARS

65 YEARSMarilyn Keller has the most fascinating stories to share about her many years as a girl, staff member, and volunteer in Girl Scouting. She attended college to become a professional Girl Scout and did so for 30 years. For three years she worked for GSUSA Troops on Foreign Soil and for the North Atlantic Girl Scouts, traveling extensively through Germany, Austria, Spain, Morocco, and Italy as a field director. In 2004 she was honored with the Girl Scouts of Chicago Marjorie Culmer Community Impact Award, which was a great honor considering she had met Marjorie, who had served as President of Girl Scouts of Chicago, President of GSUSA, and World Chief Guide at WAGGGS.

Carol Cleave continues to be active with a Mariner Ship in her hometown of Wilmette. They sail locally every week during the summer and also take a yearly trip to Martha’s Vineyard, where they sail on the Shenandoah. Carol says the troop has done this every year since 1967. She has missed only one trip in the last 40 years. She remembers when they used to charter the entire ship, but since their numbers are down, they share the Shenandoah with other youth groups. Carol says she is not the primary leader of the ship but that she likes to help out and enjoys it so much that it is her only position in Girl Scouting, and one she has been active in for all these years.

Martha May has loved her time as a Girl Scout volunteer. She has enjoyed her camping experiences, especially at Woody Acres and Juniper Knoll; her favorite camp activity is teaching girls how to primitive camp. She loved working on the cookie program with girls and behind the scenes as a volunteer helping at a cookie depot. Martha has received many recognitions as a volunteer with Girl Scouts of Chicago, including the Thanks Badge and the Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. The thing Martha cherishes most is the lifelong friends she has made as a Girl Scout volunteer.

Marylee Schmidt or “Lee” is a lifetime member of Girl Scouts who fondly recalls her girl years when she was a C.I.T. at Camp Juniper Knoll. She was chosen in 1958 to attend the Round-Up in Detroit, Michigan. Her adult roles have included being staff at the Idaho Round-Up, troop leader for various grade levels, service unit cirector, outdoor trainer, day camp staff, cookie chair at the service unit and council levels, and member of the Adult Recognition and Alumni Committees in the former DuPage County council. She is not currently active but has passed on her love of scouting to her children and has a daughter who is a leader in Seattle, Washington. Lee enjoys the many friendships she has made through Girl Scouting.

60 YEARS

Years of Service

Virginia Haugen is known to Girl Scouts as “Todd”. She has fond memories of camping with girls, putting on shows at night, singing around the campfire, and going on hikes. Although Virginia was never a Girl Scout as a child, she has made up for it as an adult! She wouldn’t trade her Girl Scout years for anything!

Mary Helfrich grew up on the far northwest side of Chicago and began in Brownies when she was eight and her mother was the leader. She has camped at Juniper Knoll and Butternut Springs and has visited all four World Centers! Mary also served as an exchange trip leader to Gloucestershire, England in 1973.

Patricia Hill started volunteering with Girl Scouts when her first daughter was seven years old. She worked alongside Annette Cameron in her role as a day camp nurse for two years, and would later work with Annette again as an assistant leader for a Cadette troop. To this day, she still helps Annette Cameron’s troops. As a girl, Pat was a Girl Scout and in a Mariner troop, and she has very fond memories of camping at Juniper Knoll.

Florence Lorance started her volunteering for the Girl Scouts in 1962 so her oldest daughter could have a troop in the North Beverly neighborhood, in the legacy Chicago council. Flo continued as a troop leader for all seven daughters and beyond for many years. She was also a Den mother for her sons. Flo also has fond memories from Camp Juniper Knoll when she was a Girl Scout.

Rita Watt, also known as “Little Bill” in Girl Scouts, started her Girl Scout volunteer years as a troop leader at Our Lady of the Snows church in legacy Chicago’s old District 11, around 47th and Cicero. One of Rita’s most memorable trips was to Our Chalet in 1979 with her Senior Girl Scout troop and her co-leader Marie Daly.

Pamela E. Whiteside became a troop leader for her daughter in the early 70’s. They are from the River Grove area and had so many girls wanting to be in Brownies, they started a second troop. Her troop number was 1562 and was in the legacy Lone Tree Council. During this time, she was called “Krafty” because she was the craft counselor for years during day camp at Wild Rose. Although Pam is not as active as before due to a stroke, she has very fond memories of the time she spent with her mother and daughter in scouting. She appreciates the efforts that everyone has put into helping girls become mature adults.

55 YEARS

Bonnie Batchelor joined Girl Scouts of Chicago as a Brownie and continued through high school. She first became a volunteer in college and over the years has served a troop leader, service unit manager, council trainer and in other volunteer roles. Bonnie also worked professionally for Girl Scout councils in Illinois, Texas, Massachusetts and New Hampshire; serving as membership manager, chief fund development officer and chief operating officer. The Girl Scout Promise guides her life; she really takes to heart the words, and at the end of each day she examines what she has accomplished. Today, Bonnie continues to volunteer in the Chicago area in a service unit, still giving back to the organization that has influenced her life.

Betty Henneman still remembers raising her hand to be a Girl Scout leader as she and her daughter sat at a school Girl Scout meeting. She has never regretted that moment. When her third and last daughter moved on in scouting, Betty told her that she planned to continue. Betty currently serves on the Catholic Medals committee, a position she has held for 20 years! Betty has enjoyed all of her leadership and council positions.

Almatine Robertson has been a leader at all grade levels in Girl Scouting. She has been active in her service unit for many years, holding the positions of coordinator, chair, vice coordinator, secretary, product sales chair, and council delegate. She hosted service unit meetings at her home and provided delicious treats at the end of each meeting, which boosted the attendance in her service unit.

Brooke Wiseman joined the Girl Scouts as a girl and continued as an adult in both professional and volunteer capacities. As a college student, she spent her summers as camp staff before joining the staff as a field director. Brooke was proud to be part of the staff at the World Conference when it was held in the United States in the 1980s. She has been a program director, an executive director in three councils in Texas and Illinois, and served as the CEO of Girl Scouts of Chicago. She is a recipient of the Appreciation Pins and Thanks Badge; she has served as the National President of the Association of Girl Scout Executive Staff. After retiring from Girl Scouting in 2008, Brooke served at the CEO of the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago and currently is the National CEO of Blessings in a Backpack.

All the happy memories and things in my collection,Are ready to be passed on, with deep and great affection.Girls Scouts will carry on with traditions and dedication.

Please help my beloved possessions reach the ultimate destination.Moving my things forward is not at all a sorrow –
