A Message from the Rector The Very Rev. F. Wilson Brown

Dear beloved of God,When we talk about giving toGod, I will often go to somewords from the marriage servicein the Book of Common Prayer:“With all that I am, and all that Ihave, I honor you.”

When the Church speaks of giv-ing our time, talent, and treas-

ure there are always at least two tiers to beconsidered. The primary tier is always about ourrelationship with God. In that tier we are notweighing the needs around us. We are respondingto God.

Tithing and percentage giving are the most com-mon spiritual disciplines of money. If you grew uplike me it may have never occurred to you thatfinances are spiritual. It had not occurred to meuntil I saw the witness of folks who tithed. Theywere not self-righteous or crazy. Rather they hadexperienced a new freedom from and openness tootheir finances.

Their witness is that God has been so generous inour creation, preservation, and all the blessings oflife; most especially God’s love in sending us Jesus. They read in the Bible that the tithe, 10%, is a stan-dard of “giving back” to God. Moreover, they attestby word and action that somewhere in the 7% to10% giving range attitudes change about money. A new freedom, trust, and love of God emerge. (In fairness I cannot tell you which comes first, thegreater giving or the changed relationship.)

Those who teach this way of giving suggest aprocess of growing into it. The idea is to make aninitial shift from giving an amount to giving a per-centage. It can be a simple shift in thinking. If I give$5 a week and make $200 a week I am already giv-ing 2.5% of my income. Then I stretch to see if Ican raise the percentage.

Sparing the long story, we tried it. We found outthat God really is in all aspects of life, including ourrelationship with money. We give a percentage ofour income to the glory of God as a symbol of ourvows, and with all that we are, and all that we have,we honor God. It has gotten to be fun trying to fig-ure out how to give away God’s portion in a waythat best serves God.

That brings us to the second tier of giving: where isthe money to go? We have options that require ourprayerful consideration. The needs of the world aregreat. There are many ministries and organizationsthat serve the world in Christ’s name.

St. John’s community asks us to consider givinggenerously to this parish. We believe in this congre-gation. We offer word and sacrament, teaching, fellowship, community leadership. We are commu-nity of formation and proving ground as we try tolive together faithfully sharing Christ’s love. Westrive as a parish community to find ever more cre-ative ways to give of our resources to the communi-ty and world beyond.

One can make a case that it is possible to do all ofthese things without a building, staff, and parishorganization. But would we? Consider what drawsus together and causes us to return regularly. Ourwalk with Christ is considerably strengthened bythe vitality of this parish community.

My family and I invite you to join us in giving generously of time, talent, and treasure; first to theglory of God, then to this congregation that nur-tures so many in their walk with God.

Your brother in Christ,

—Wilson+

Upcoming Events & Parish News

All Saints’ Sunday—November 4th

The Feast of All Saints is one of the major Holy Daysof the Christian year and is one of the oldest festivalsin the church calendar. It was originally celebrated onthe first Sunday after Pentecost, marking the end ofthe season of Easter. Pope Gregory III, in 740 A.D.,designated November 1st as the day in which thefaithful were to pray for the souls of “…all saints, martyrs and confessors (and) of all the just made per-fect who are at rest…” Many Christian countriesaround the world have traditional activities associat-ed with this day, though in the English-speakingworld celebration is usually limited to singing thehymn “For All the Saints.” All Saints Day is, in manyplaces called All Hallows. The night before AllHallows becomes All Hallows’ Eve — Hallowe’en.There will be an Evensong service on November 4that 5:00 p.m. Rev. Nina Salmon will be the preacherfor the service. Special music will be provided by theSt. John’s Choir, Steve Lawrence, C.W. Markham,Johnson Scott and Bill Parrish.

Stewardship Sunday—November 4th

This year Stewardship Sunday is November 4th. Following a brief presentation at the 10:30 service,we will be given the opportunity to fill out a pledgecard for the coming year. The 2019 budget is facinga challenging year so we do encourage you to attendthis important presentation.

Vestry NominationsKim Nowlin, Julia Baker, J.R.Rodes and SteveWandrei will be completing their terms on theVestry at the end of this year. They are acceptingnominations for new Vestry members. Anyone whois a communicant in good standing can be nominat-ed. If you would like to nominate someone, pleaseadvise one of them or Wilson Brown, or call thechurch office at 586-9582. Voting will take place atthe Annual Meeting in December.

St. John’s BoxwoodsAfter consulting with bunches of people, theGarden Club, the Cooperative Extension, and ourlandscapers, we have become convinced that wehave to remove our boxwoods. The bottom lineappears to be that our bushes are already infected. The treatment program may, I emphasize “may”,work in keeping the blight off of uninfected box-woods for the rest of the season. It is expensive, time consuming, will have to be continued for theforeseeable future, and even then may not work.In the meantime, our infected boxwoods pose adirect threat to the unaffected boxwoods belongingto parishioners who pass by the plants. Our altarguild leaders decided a couple of weeks ago that wewould not be using our boxwoods for greens any-more. Just too easy to pass the blight along. We regret the course of action but have becomeconvinced that prompt removal is the best way tobe good neighbors to those trying to keep their box-woods blight free.

Is it Christmas Yet?If you go by the movies on the Hallmark Channel,or the items for sale in the dollar stores, youwould think Christmas is going to take place nextweek. The early commercial hoopla does remindus that it is time to start thinking of how we aregoing to approach gift giving this holiday season. Are you going to try giving some alternative giftsthis year? Alternative Gift Giving refers to mak-ing a charitable donation in honor of someoneinstead of purchasing a more traditional gift. Soinstead of buying a sweater or belt or scarf orgloves, you make a donation to the BedfordChristmas Station or Bedford ChristianMinistry or God’s Pit Crew or Episcopal Reliefand Development. There are many, many worth-while charities that need, and would be thankfulfor, your support. You can be very thoughtfulabout matching the person with the charity.Maybe the person is a volunteer driver and wouldappreciate a donation to Bedford Ride. Maybehe/she has been a long time supporter of BoysHome and would appreciate a gift given to thatorganization. Maybe a donation to the AmericanCancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Association,Shriners Hospitals for Children, or some otherhealth-related charity would be appropriate. Please consider prayerfully the idea of alternativegiving this Christmas. This just might turn out tobe the most appreciated gift you give this year.

The Episcopal Shield—The Rev. F. Wilson Brown

Our new event tent is embla-zoned with the church’s nameand the Episcopal shield. Atthe Bedford Get Together Iwas asked about the symbol-ism of the shield. Finding that I

did not remember I decided toshare an update with all of us.

What follows is shamelessly borrowed from thewebsite of St. James Episcopal Church inGoshen, NY: http://stjamesgoshen.org/our-parish/episcopal-shield-history/ .

The shield was adopted by the GeneralConvention of 1940 and is rich in symbolism. Thered cross on a white field is the St. George Cross,an indicator of our link to the Church of England, the mother church of the Anglican Communion. The miniature crosses in the blue quadrant sym-bolize the nine original American Dioceses thatmet in Philadelphia in 1789 to adopt the constitu-tion of the Protestant Episcopal Church in theUnited States of America. They are: Connecticut(established in 1783), Maryland (1783),Massachusetts (1784), Pennsylvania (1784), NewJersey (1785), New York (1785), South Carolina(1785), Virginia (1785), and Delaware (1786).The blue field in the upper left is the color tradi-tionally associated with the Blessed Virgin Maryand is symbolic of Jesus’ human nature, which hereceived from his mother.

The outline of the miniature crosses is in theform of St. Andrew’s Cross in tribute to theScottish church’s role in ordaining the firstAmerican Bishop, Samuel Seabury, in 1784. Thecolors red, white and blue symbolize, respective-ly, (Red) the sacrifice of Christ and Christianmartyrs,(White) the purity of the Christian faith, and (Blue) the humanity of Christ received fromthe Virgin Mary. In duplicating the colors of theAmerican flag, they also represent the EpiscopalChurch’s standing as the U.S. branch of theAnglican Communion.
