REMEMBER MOTHER'S DAY

People are cften prone tO overlook t he value of par· ental care in making them what the~; are. Some don 't forget , arid to help all of us appreciate our mothers more, a day has been set aside in their honor. Ne),.-t Sunday, Mother's Day, has been chosen as one day in which we can , in part, t ry to make up for honors and attentions we have neglected.

:\!ot her's Day honors the one 'Who has taught us to love the life we live. It is Mother who has ministered to our needs, encouraged us when we were gloomy, and provided the nescs11-ary boost that h&s caused us to persevere when we hesistate to ta k e a s t ep ~sEe ntial t o s uccess. ANOTHER GOOD SPEECH j !d~~ni~1o~n ;~et~·ke~~it~o~ The past W e dn esday we

were privileged to hear a~other inspiring address, th1s one by Dr. Alexander E. Goode, R abbi f-rom York.

Paitabbi Goode s poke on the parallelism of Democracy and C hris tianity. Conf:iict· illg claims notwithstanding, our democracy, the democracy whkh the whole world knows of, stem s from civilreligious organizations un-

Dr. Goode's observations are of particular va lue to us DOW when a ll we recognize u democratic and as Christian is t hreatened with extermination . This war is a c:l•sh between irrec.onciliabJe philosophies of life and

THEY DESERVE RECOGNITION

AJmost every week some of our students quietly enter a recruiting office some p lace in th ~ s tate and sign up for senice with the nation's armed forces. Some of these young men have already been ca lled; others are awaiting orders. Have those 'who h ave gone been missed? W ill those w h o go later be missed? Definitely the answer is yes.

I.f one of the College graduates leaves to take a prom ine nt position, much ado usua ll y is m ade of his going; and yet, when a young College man enters t he most important career in t h e country today, we s ee m to place liftle emphasis on h is going.

Brief Notes About Band Leaden-Hit Tunes

of The Day

b)' Bill Wheeler and J ack Stalnaker QUESTI ON OF T HE MONTH:

··Are Girl Musicians The Eqcal of Men?"

Woody Heman, bandleader: "Up until about three months ago I would ha,,,e answered this question ,-ery quickly and very smugly in the TW;gative. Then 1 found and heard Billie Rogers. Now, well, let us ;;a.y that no.w I am not quite so sure .about it. Do you know wh.at I mean?"

J im.my Dorsey, bandleader: "No, I am nfTaid the girls .are not the equal o! men. Some girl musicians that I have heard are very good, some o! them are cute, too, but i! you ask ome to name the grea·t male musicians I know 1"11 tall thl'!TD off by the hour for youif you ask me to name the great WCI:Uen musicians 1 know, J"ll have to stutter a little."

Billie Rogers, trumpeter with Woody Herman: "Woody is just being generous. Woonen don't have the feeling for swing or for great s)-mponit m6s • .::. They haven't any broad conception of what they want !or music. Maybe strength has something to do with it, too. I don•t know.' '

L~s Brown. bandleader: " The answer is, no, of course. Women don't have the physical stamina or the patience to say with, an instrument until they master it. Yea.rs of hard work a1·e required an d mo5t women aren't willing to

gi.,•e that to music. There might be a few exceptions to the rule but I 'll be darned i! I can think o! .a ny right now."
