Last Friday night, 100 eager Year 12 students and their guests headed to Sfera’s Function Centre at Modbury for a ‘Casino’ themed Formal event. The night served as an opportunity

to let our hair down, forget about any upcoming assignments or tests and simply enjoy each other’s company while busting some moves on the

dance floor!

This night was a pivotal moment on our journey at Gleeson and highlighted

the many friendships formed over the past five years. It also allowed for many memories to be captured with pictures taken by Event Photo and the Photo Booth. Awards for ‘Best Dressed’ went to Christian Raggatt (12 DSAKN) for his beige-coloured

suit jacket and accompanying bow tie, and to Aleisha Agostino (12 FSMIL) for her floral-patterned navy-blue dress. Dawid Jurczak (12 MSSPI) and Tayla Slack (12 MSFAL) were also awarded

for their amazing dance efforts.

A big thank you goes to Ms Freeth for her organisation of the night, the

Gleeson College staff who were in attendance, as well as the staff of Sfera’s, Event Photo and Titanium

Security. I would also like to thank our DJ’s, Gleeson College Old Scholars Peter Caruso and Carlo Librino, for mixing some great tunes! Finally,

thank you to my fellow Year 12 Formal Committee members; Kiara Arabilla,

Georgia Beveridge, Chloe Bristow, Jacob Hanna, Molly Martin, Kelly Holl and Grace O’Neill. It has truly been a

pleasure to work with you all, planning our Senior Formals over the last two years. Your hard work and dedication

does not go unrecognised.

Gospel ReflectionThis week’s Gospel from John reminds us of the central message of Easter. This verse succinctly and powerfully summarises God’s relationship with humanity. In this time of uncertainty and hurt in the world, it is a timely reminder of God’s love for each of us.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever

believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands

condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s

one and only Son.”

I wish all of our staff, students and families a safe and restful long weekend. I trust it is a time for all to refresh and recharge for the last month of Term 2.

Mr Andrew Baker,Principal

ENSURING WE ARE A ‘CHILD SAFE’ COMMUNITY

StunningI am on record on many occasions as saying that the students of Gleeson College are the most wonderful, warm and friendly young people that I have ever had the pleasure to teach. I have loved the students at all of the schools I have worked in, which is somewhat of an occupational hazard; but Gleeson College students are exceptional. They love being a part of our community, are proud to identify with Gleeson College, and are fiercely loyal to their school. I am constantly raving about them, to whomever might listen!

Another example of how our student body is simply stunning, both in their look and demeanour, was the Year 12 Formal held last Friday at Sfera’s Convention Centre. What a truly fantastic event to be associated with, and I and everyone else there, had a wonderful time. It is so refreshing to spend time with a group of mature, sensible and yet fun-loving students. Once again, at the end of the evening as I made the trek home I marveled at how fortunate I am to be able to spend my working life with these amazing young people.

Creative Arts Concert and ExhibitionThis event will be held next Tuesday at 7pm in the Golden Grove Arts Theatre. The Years 10, 11 and 12 Creative Arts students will be presenting their products as part of their Creative Arts subject requirements. The showcase will include original music compositions, choreography, singing, dancing, acting, painting, filmmaking and special effects make up! The concert will also feature the Adelaide University Big Band who have been working with our Gleeson Stage Band (see photo below).

The Concert Band, Choir, Rock Bands and Dancers will also be performing on the night. As you can see this promises a wonderful array of student talent and hard work, so I hope to see many of you next Tuesday, and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Careers ExpoStudents and parents are invited to this combined campus event next Wednesday 14 June in the Golden Grove Recreation and Arts Centre from 4-8pm. It will provide a wide range of career advice in order to support students and their families as they prepare to make decisions about SACE, post-school training and study options. Daytime sessions will see students from each of our schools visit the Careers Expo in class groups. The evening session provides an opportunity for families to attend and for students to return and follow up from their inquiries earlier in the day. The event is open to students and families from our three schools, and will provide a wide range of career advisers, with a wealth of information, assisting students on making decisions related to a career pathway.

End of Semester 1 AssessmentsIt is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of Semester 1. Time certainly has flown by this year. For our Stage 1 students in particular the next few weeks will involve a number of final assessment tasks and then examinations in Week 8. This can be a stressful time, and it is important that students work closely with their teachers, and that families and parents provide support to ensure that the very best outcomes can be achieved.

A ‘Child Safe’ CommunityGleeson College is committed to ensuring that all young people in our care are safe. To this end we are consistently reviewing our processes with the support of Catholic Education South Australia. Families SA provide the following procedure regarding Reporting child abuse and neglect. Anyone can report suspicions of abuse or neglect, and the Children’s Protection Act 1993 lists a range of people who are mandated notifiers, recognising the multiple contexts in which children participate and the varying roles of community members in children’s lives. Continual observation should take place and ongoing reporting

YEAR 9/10 SPECIALIST NETBALL PROGRAM > Treating the Walking Wounded!

It was a case of the walking wounded during class on Tuesday with the Year 9/10 Specialist Netballers

taping all matter of injuriescommon in netball!

Under the guidance of Hayley Ashworth from the South Australian

Sports Medicine Association, students participated in two sessions

with an injury prevention and management focus.

The first session involved recognising the symptoms of sporting injuries and how to treat them, whilst the

second session was more of a practical approach with students learning how to perform an ankle

taping, as well as a common thumb taping.

Now that our players are equipped with these tools, don’t be surprised if they want to practice on you at home!

YEAR 8&9 GIRLS KNOCKOUT NETBALL TEAM > ROUND 1 BLITZ!The Gleeson Year 8&9 Knockout Netball Team played in Round 1 of the Statewide Competition against St Peter’s Girls and Adelaide High School at St Peter’s last

Friday 2 June.

The first game against Adelaide High was a well contested challenge, but in the end the Gleeson girls won 56-14.

The next game was played against the tough opponents of St Peter’s Girls.

This proved to be a tougher competition, although yet again, the girls played well

resulting in a Gleeson win 41-29.

It was a great day to strengthen our bond as a team, execute the skills and tactical plays we are learning in class, and most

importantly to have fun.

A special thank you to Gleeson Netball Program Head Coach Darren Saul for coaching and guiding us to play with

intensity and structure in both games.

We now look forward to Round 2!!

OPEN GIRLS KO NETBALL > Gallant Results Against Quality Opposition

Ten selected players, along with Gleeson Coaches Darren Saul

and Taylor Krawczyk, headed to Concordia College to contest the opening round of the 2017 Open Knockout Netball Competition

last Thursday 1 June.

The first game we played was against Immanuel College and was

definitely the challenging game of the day. After a tough battle,

Immanuel managed to pull in front and win.

Our spirits did not drop and we lifted against Concordia in the second

game. After a close three quarters, and a goal-for-goal last quarter, we

managed to force an error in the last 30 seconds allowing us to win the

game by two goals!

The day was highly competitive and lots of fun. Our Year 12 netballers were all proud to experience their

final KO competition and now know the team is in good hands due to

the amazing efforts of our younger players in the team!

Well done to all the girls and a big thank you to Coaches Darren and Taylor for leading us on the day.
