The Golden Means of Perfection

Message from the president, Kevin Bauman

Chervin was founded in 1991 on one foundational principle - The Golden Rule - which is taken from Matthew 7:12: “Do unto others as you would have them do to you”. We have chosen to live by this principle in our daily lives, while controlling the manufacturing process and delivering high-end kitchen cabinets, vanities and wall units that surpass our customers’ expectations. We do this by obsessively focusing on the details, so we get it right and our customers get what they want. This end-to-end quality control ensures that customers call on Chervin when only the best will do.

After 25 years of staying true to this commitment, we have chosen to encompass this principle in the Chervin brand. Our new logo is encased in a portion of what is known as the “golden means” - a rectangle width of 1 and a length of 1.618 - considered to be the perfect proportion used in art and architecture. Through this, our new tag line: “The Golden Means of Perfection” was born.

At Chervin, we are committed to delivering beautiful and functional solutions to our customers, with perfection in even the smallest details. As a family-owned and operated business, Chervin is in a unique position to make good on its promises. That’s our golden rule of service and that’s what sets us apart.

I invite you to visit our showrooms, in Waterloo and Muskoka, so you can experience “The Golden Means of Perfection” that defines Chervin. You will not be disappointed.

Chervin’s commitment

Our team leaders constantly challenge each other to ensure our commitment to customers.

COMMON Q&A – PART 1

How much does the initial estimate cost? Nothing to you! The initial estimate includes a quote, a 3-D rendering of the cabinets, and a basic set of drawings. That way, you see what you get and how much it will cost.

What makes a kitchen more or less expensive? Because our kitchens are custom built, many things affect the cost such as cabinet colour, door style, finishing details, and hardware.

What is the design process? How do we get started? You can start here right now! Just call our receptionist to book an appointment with one of our designers. All we need is some general information, and we’ll set up a time to discuss your vision and cabinetry options.

Do you come to my home and measure? Yes, our designers will complete a free in-home consultation, measure your space, and provide an estimate of what your cabinetry will cost.

After you’ve measured our space, how do we see our plans come to life? Our designers produce 3-D colour renderings to help you visualize your dream space and bring it to life.

How long after the design stage will our cabinets be installed? All of our cabinets are manufactured locally in the small town of Hawkesville, Ontario. It takes approximately 10 weeks for your cabinets to be manufactured and installed.

Do you install the cabinets? Yes, our qualified and experienced experts will install the cabinets to your satisfaction.

A well-designed kitchen makes use of every square inch – and then some. From accessible storage at every turn to convenient preparation sites, your high-functioning kitchen will endure the test of time.

Who says a cabinet can’t be a bank of drawers or that a corner is just wasted space? Storage solutions abound and are only limited by the imagination. A good designer will put every inch to work for you. Convenience and functionality are at the heart of every great kitchen design.

101MAINTENANCECLEANING GUIDELINESKeeping your cabinets clean and beautiful is easy. Just wipe with a soft cloth moistened with warm water. When they need a more thorough cleaning, add a bit of mild liquid dishwashing soap to your warm water - NOT soap for automatic dishwashers. Clean, then rinse with a clean, damp cloth, and dry the cabinets right away using another soft, clean, dry cloth.

SPLATTERS AND SPILLSProtect the beautiful finish on your cabinetry. Clean spills and splatters right away (cleaning guidelines above). Spills and splatters from food, water or other liquids, oil and grease can permanently discolour or damage the finish. An ounce of prevention is worth years of enjoyment!

AVOID THESE CLEANING PRODUCTSTo avoid damaging your cabinets, always read the contents of your cleaning products and materials carefully and stay away from these:

• Strong soaps or harsh detergents, cleaning products containing abrasives like tub and sink cleansers, scouring powder, and self-polishing waxes

• Abrasive materials like steel wool or scouring pads, even sponges or dish cloths that may contain abrasives, food particles, oils, or the residue of harsh cleaning solutions

• Petroleum-based products like mineral spirits or solvent-based solutions like nail-polish removers or paint thinners

• Ammonia, bleach, or products containing these

• Cleaning, waxing, or polishing products that contain silicone

1CABINET CARE TIPSREGULAR DUSTINGRegular dusting with a soft, clean, lint-free cotton cloth is best. We don’t recommend packaged dusting sheets or pre-moistened dusting/cleaning sheets. Never use aerosol dusting products.

WAXING AND POLISHINGIt’s not necessary to wax your cabinets, and we do not recommend it. Waxing and polishing compounds build up over time leaving the finish hazy, streaky, and yellowed. That waxy buildup is hard to remove!

CLEANING GLASS DOORSTake extra care when cleaning your glass doors. Use only ammonia-free glass cleaner, and spray it directly on a clean, soft, lint-free cloth or paper towel. Never spray cleaner directly on the glass; it could over spray and damage the cabinet or seep behind the window dividers.

SCRATCHES, GOUGES, AND NICKSA touch-up kit will help to hide surface damage. The touch-up pen in the kit will hide minor blemishes. The tinted putty stick can be used to fill deeper scratches, gouges, or nicks.

AVOID MOISTURE DAMAGEEven a little moisture can result in permanent damage to your cabinet’s finish. Draping a damp cloth or dish towel over the cabinet door, for example, can cause discoloration or peeling.

AVOID LIGHT DAMAGEExposure to direct sunlight can darken the colour of natural wood products and fade painted wood or laminated and thermofoil surfaces. To keep your cabinets beautiful, consider blinds or drapes to shield them from the direct rays of the sun.

Touch up nicks with a fill stick that matches your cabinet colour

Tip

www.chervin.ca { 10 }

Wax repair sticks are excellent for filling in deeper nicks and gouges in any kind of finished or unfinished woodwork. Simply rub the sticks into the repair, wipe off the excess and the wax will contour to the repair.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK

We now know the ‘Chervin Experience’. It was the friendly, engaging, service-oriented approach of our Chervin designer, accompanied by the meticulous precision work of our Chervin installer that showed us we were in good hands.

MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION WHEN IT COMES TO QUALITY…

JOINERY CONSTRUCTIONJoinery is all about how the wood is fitted together. If the drawer boxes are dovetailed, that’s a sure sign of master craftsmanship. At Chervin, our solid-wood drawer boxes are always dovetailed as these joints are the most durable. You can see dovetail construction in the interlocking fingers at the corners of each drawer. Our cabinet boxes are glued and dowelled to create a strong and lasting construction. The joints designed to receive heavier stress are screwed together to ensure durable quality.

You can also judge the quality of a cabinet by the materials used in its construction. At Chervin, we offer three optional interiors, including maple veneer core, wood-grain melamine, and white melamine.

STONEcountertops

Don’t put square corners on any natural stone. Opt for a bullnose or another edge detail that is rounded. Square and ornately decorated corners have a tendency to chip.

CARE & CLEANINGUse only water and mild soap to clean your countertop. Do not use cleaners that include lemon, vinegar, abrasives, or harsh chemicals.

Protect your Granite countertop from foods containing acids such as citrus juices or alcohol. Use coasters under glasses.

Granite Stone countertops should be treated with a sealer at least once a year. Natural stone sealer can be purchased at most hardware stores.

Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution, and dry with a soft cloth.

GRANITE

Granite is a natural stone. Each piece is unique, and no two pieces are alike. You’ll be fascinated by the variety of colours and textures that make your granite countertop a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. From light shades with subtle patterns to deep, bold designs, you can rest assured no one else will have one quite like yours.

Aesthetics aside, granite is hardworking and durable – an ideal choice for your countertop. With regular care, including treating and occasionally sealing, you and your guests will admire your work of art for many years to come.

QUARTZ

Quartz is engineered stone, which allows the creation of countertops with a consistent pattern. With a vast array of colours and patterns available, you can choose one to match or contrast your cabinets or tiled floors. The appearance of seams, where sections of the manufactured slabs are joined, will be minimized with a professional installation.

The beauty of a quartz countertop is that it’s non-porous – which means it’ll keep looking good for a very long time and never needs to be sealed. Quartz won’t be stained

by food or liquids, and it is heat and scratch resistant too – all very important qualities in the kitchen where slicing, dicing and cooking are everyday occurrences. High-heat appliances can cause permanent damage to the finish.

SOAPSTONE

Soapstone, which comes from Finland, China and Brazil, is quarried like granite and quartz and is composed primarily of magnesite, dolomite, chlorite and talc. The talc gives it a soft, warm appearance and touch.

Because it’s non-porous, it’s completely resistant to bacteria growth. It was originally used for masonry heaters and is used for countertops in forensic and science labs because it’s impervious to virtually any type of chemical. No sealing is required, so a hot pan can be placed directly on it, and the surface can be used for dough preparation.

For the first month, soapstone should be periodically rubbed with mineral oil to bring out the beauty of the stone and its marbling. Matching sinks can be created, and it can be used as a backsplash or as flooring.

Storage space is a precious commodity. One great way to maximize your organizational opportunities is by extending cabinets to the ceiling. That way, there’s ample room to incorporate clever gadgets and accessories for hanging, storing, and displaying your belongings. Personalize your design so it’s functional for you. Whether you have 50 pairs of shoes or a dozen hats, a well-designed, adjustable space keeps you organized and orderly. Built-in lighting helps you see the big picture, and a well-placed tie rack or belt rack keeps small items at your fingertips.

The kitchen is, and always will be, the centre of the home. It should reflect your personality while creating an ambiance that complements adjacent rooms. It’s the special touches that will make your kitchen unique and personal. The backsplash, for example, can be functional or whimsical; it can be an accessory or the focal point of the room. Stained glass tiles will shimmer with under-cabinet lighting, while subtle, monotone tiles just sit back and let something else take centre stage. The main purpose of the backsplash is to protect your walls, but there’s no reason why it can’t make a bold statement.

FINDING THAT FABULOUS FAUCET Who would have thought there was so much involved in choosing a faucet? If ‘form follows function’ you need to ask yourself these questions:

• Do your tastes lean towards modern, traditional, or art nouveau?

• Do you have a double sink?

• Do you have an island with a prep sink? If so, do you want a matching or complementary faucet?

• Do you want/need a spray hose?

• Will you have a built-in water filter?

• What metal finish complements your cabinets and hardware?

Unique CountertopWhen our clients fell in love with this stunning slab of walnut for the island top, we designed curved cabinet sections with leaded glass doors to mirror the natural flow of the wood.

This room literally redefines ‘rustic’. It’s the ultimate example of not just appreciating nature, but cherishing it. Fashioned from a myriad of finishes and surfaces, the cabinetry is both rounded and angled, the doors solid, glassed, or textured. And at the very heart, a sculptured wooden countertop meanders through, ebbing and flowing with masterful touches that meld custom comfort with true beauty.

MASTERFUL TOUCHES

IN THE KITCHEN

Staining is a fine art with each project the result of a unique blend of products and processes. We used an Aged Brandy stain here, but the process itself is what brings out the character and ambiance.

To get the old-world look, we used a physical distressing technique that takes natural maple and adds cracks with a knife, dents with a rock, and tiny holes using a worm-hole tool or poker. Then we applied a series of finishing steps including: dyeing, washing, pad staining to create dark and

light variation, glazing, dry brush glazing to add the aging, cow-tailing or swishing the darker stain around with a mop head, and finally sealing the stained and distressed wood.

Featuring the client-selected slab of walnut for the island countertop meant incorporating design elements that flowed with its natural curves. Granite slabs were also selected for the other counter tops. The resulting masterpiece is a great example of how we work with our clients to bring their dreams to reality.

• Think like a designer and find practical space everywhere – like drawers below the vanity sink. While not quite as deep because of the plumbing, it’s still additional storage.

• Vanity heights vary from 32” to 36”, based on comfort and whether there’s an under-mount sink or a surface-mount vessel. Total height from the floor to the top of the vessel should not exceed 36” with the countertop height reduced accordingly.

Even without natural light, a smaller room can be bright and airy. A lighter finish will make it seem bigger. A less-obvious design trick involves installing a floating vanity. Elevate the cabinet about 10 – 12” above the finished floor and mount it on the wall. The floor flows under the cabinet, giving the illusion of endlessness. Enhance the illusion by adding a warm glow with LED under-cabinet lighting.

Dreaming your kitchen into reality is all about personal taste and lifestyle. Whether you like traditional, modern, or something in between, the outcome depends on a well-designed master plan and your personal flourishes in selecting materials, finishes, and fixtures. And when that’s done, you can sit back and listen to the years of stories to be told around your kitchen table.

SELECTING YOUR APPLIANCES

• Consider the style of your kitchen design. Is it contemporary, classical, traditional or something in between? That will help determine and automatically eliminate some styles, making your selection easier.

• Word of mouth is a great place to start. What do your friends say about their appliance choices? Are they delighted or disappointed? Their experiences can save you a lot of time and money.

• What are your must-have features and what are the nice-to-haves? Jot down and keep a running list of features well before you go shopping.

• Before you shop, ask yourself and any other ‘chefs’ in the house about their cooking styles. Are there any master chefs in your home, or do they just cook simple meals? You’ll shop for appliances differently if you have experts in the house than if you don’t.

• Consider the size of appliances and how they’ll fit into your overall kitchen design. Everyone wants a double 36” fridge and 36” freezer combination, but is it practical and is there room in your design?

• Appliance dealers tell you their machines are quiet, but you need to hear things like the range hood fan and the dishwasher when they’re running.

• Consider your typical gathering. Will the 20-lb Christmas turkey fit in the oven in your favourite roasting pan? Bring it with you, or take measurements before you go shopping.

form follows function

{ 31 } www.chervin.ca

Appliance design and the work triangleA great design incorporates both aesthetics and functionality. In the kitchen, that means consideration for the work triangle – the walking distance between the sink, refrigerator, and primary cooking surface. While appliances have evolved since the work triangle was developed in the early 20th century, the principle has remained the same. If the triangle is too small, the kitchen will feel cramped and crowded. If it’s too large, the design is inefficient.

www.chervin.ca { 32 }

The work triangle - aesthetically p leasing and functional

Traditionally, the kitchen is the centre of the home. It’s a place to gather with family and friends, to share thoughts and experiences as well as food. It’s a room for nourishing the soul along with the body. This beautifully designed room is both inviting and accommodating. It has a warm and sparkling glow, appealing colours and textures, and ample seating. It calls out for the company of family and friends. With ample work surfaces and everything within reach, it’s a standing invitation to join in.

{ 33 } www.chervin.ca

the best of both worlds

The inner beauty of natural wood is impossible to duplicate, so we use it to complement our designs, and our designs complement nature’s palette. The warm hues and unique grain of the scraped floorboards anchor the design and put the island into the spotlight where it deserves to be. Embellishments, like the custom range hood and granite countertops, add to the outdoor feel, while the modern cream-coloured cabinets envelop the room with a cozy indoor ambience.

It’s all about style. Match the finish of your cabinetry or use a complimentary paint or stain.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE REMODELING YOUR KITCHEN:

Start a “New Kitchen” file and fill it with photos and design details that appeal to you. Look for ideas in magazines, model kitchens, friends’ kitchens, or on the web. Observe how you use your current kitchen to cook and prepare meals. Consider what works well now and where improvements can be made.

COMMON Q&A – PART 2

What are dovetail drawers? Dovetail refers to a specific joint construction. The drawer is made of solid wood, and the joint is dovetailed – like a jigsaw puzzle where pieces are connected at the corners.

What are the most common finishes? There are so many finishes that none are considered common. You can get painted finishes, stained finishes, and glazed finishes, just to mention a few.

Do you sell faucets, sinks, and backsplashes? While we are not a retail store for these, we will gladly refer you to reputable suppliers.

What is the difference between you and the big box stores? Each Chervin project is custom designed and unique. We do not mass produce our cabinets or even make any before they are custom designed and ordered. All of our cabinets are handmade by our master craftsmen.
