Building a Foundation from Love: The Higgins Family on Starting a New Life in Reno

2 February 2014 The Good Life 3

Welcome to the February “Love and Fitness” issue of The Good Life! This issue of The Good Life comes infused with the always-anticipated February themes of love and good food, the month’s cardinal holiday being Valentine’s Day. The theme this month also includes a theme of fitness, as that’s what can keep our hearts truly happy year-round.

Our cover story features the Higgins family of Somersett sharing their heartfelt story of relocating to Reno, along with their dream of launching a fitness training gym in the Biggest Little City. The theme of fitness may also resonate with residents this February as they struggle to keep up with those new years resolutions to get moving and eat well. On that note, you’ll also find an article offer-ing the community-oriented fitness perspective of Kevin Croghan, a Somersett resident with a passion for fitness and nutrition—with a twist. You’ll also find some tips on health-enhancing beverag-es, some of which you might even enjoy with your Valentine this month.

Enjoy the delicacies of winter’s most heart-warming month as you look forward to next month’s Spring issue!

FEATURE STORy

When I meet Curt and Whitney Higgins at their home over-looking the 18th hole of the Somersett golf course, it’s defi-

nitely not golfing weather. It’s crisp and icy and some of the course is still covered in snow. The distinct seasons of Reno are part of what drew them to the area in 2012—even the winter. “We love that we get a taste of each of the four seasons here,” says Curt. Curt and Whitney lived in Yuba City and the Sacramento area for most of their lives and their 24 years of marriage, and decided to relocate to Northwest Reno upon an-other major life change—they became grandparents about nine months ago. From being high school sweethearts in Northern California to be-coming grandparents in Reno, the Higgins’ story mirrors their founda-tion and focus on love and family.

Curt and Whitney’s grandson Ryan, nearly 9 months old, is cooing happily as he rests in his mother’s arms. Ryan is the proud progeny of Curt and Whitney’s youngest son Garrett, 19, and his love, Ali. The young couple, together with the new grandparents, decided to make the move to Reno to set the foundation for their lives. “Becoming grand-parents at such a young age was a huge surprise, but it’s been amazing,” beams Curt. “We’re so proud of Ali and Garrett and so happy they’re a part of our lives here.” Ali and Garrett are living at the casita at the Higgins’ house as they establish their lives in Reno and prepare to buy their own house.

The move from Northern California to Reno was a natural one for the Higgins family. “We were already drawn to Reno, but when we saw Somersett it was basically a no-brainer.” The neighborhood offered them a blend of natural beauty, amenities and proximity to their family in California. “When we saw the view from this house, we were sold,”

says Curt. Their home has a panoramic view of the Sierra foothills to the West, and a reminder that California is so close yet so far. “The oth-er wonderful things about Reno are the ease in the lifestyle and the rela-tive lack of traffic, congestion and parking problems.” This is something California can’t exactly claim. “For our family,” explains Curt, “Reno also functions as an educational stepping stone with its great schools and our son’s focus on UNR. The junior colleges are great here, there’s truly a strong sense of community and it’s just an all around fine place for families.” Curt and Whitney also appreciate the ease of using the Reno airport and the way the Biggest Little City is a kind of “melting pot” of longtime local residents and transplants. “It’s a growing city, it’s got a great foundation for growth,” says Curt.

Curt Higgins has become familiar with Reno over much of his career as the VP of the Northern California Region of CEMEX—the 3rd larg-est building materials company in the world. The company provides building materials, cement, concrete, aggregates, asphalt and other ma-terials for construction. For many years, Curt commuted from his home in Northern California to Reno for work. His visits were so frequent that he spent hundreds of days a year in Reno, in extended residence at the Peppermill hotel. His lifestyle as a commuter helped him become familiar with Reno, and had his family joking that he was “married to his job” for the amount of time he spent away. Since August of 2000, Curt has enjoyed his role with CEMEX. Now that he lives in Reno, it’s a bit of a mixed blessing for the Higgins family. As much as they love their life in Somersett, Curt still spends a large amount of time travel-ling back to California for work. “See those bags by the door?” Curt ges-tures to a pile of suitcases—“that’s my life.” However, the choice to reside

in Reno also opens doors for the future of CEMEX in Reno proper. “Northern Nevada has wonderful long term prospects in terms of growth in the building industry. The rise in residential and commercial building in 2014 and beyond is looking good.”

Whitney Higgins is also happy to embrace life in Reno and her role as grandmother to baby Ryan. “It’s just so wonderful to be able to be here, all together with Ali, Garrett and Ryan.” Moving to Reno was a full family de-cision. “It was either all of us move here or none of us do,” says Whitney, who owned and operated a hair salon in Yuba City for over 15 years. “We had to convince everyone to move here, and it worked.” Garrett and Ali are young parents excited about landing in Reno and making it their home. Garrett has followed in Curt’s footsteps and works in the construction industry, having had sever-al promotions over the past years. “In a way he’s followed me into the industry, but he also definitely doesn’t want to travel as much as I do,” jokes Curt. Ali is deeply enjoying motherhood and has a passion for young children—“I’d love to be a child care pro-vider and do more babysitting—I absolutely come alive around children,” she beams.

Building the Future, Building Strength

Outside of his work and family life, Curt Higgins has a passion for bodybuilding and has won several contests in the past sever-al years. Bodybuilding is lifestyle for Curt, one that has been temporarily waylaid due to a back injury requiring major surgery soon. This reminds Curt of yet another at-traction to Reno, the quality health care op-tions. Curt and Whitney are optimistic as they face the upcoming surgery—one that will require Curt to take weeks off of work and take a respite from his travel. The down time won’t stop him from playing with baby Ryan who “gets bigger and faster every day.” Curt’s bodybuilding passion is also trans-forming into a business—Alpha Bodz LLC is a personal-training centered gym that will be ready to launch as soon as the Higgins’ decide on an ideal location. Curt and Whit-ney both agree that Reno is also a ripe en-clave for small businesses to launch and gain momentum. “This is my passion, and I’m so excited to get it started.”

The vision for Alpha Bodz is to provide top quality training for all levels of fitness as well as group fitness classes in a profession-

My family and I have recently moved to Reno and we couldn’t be any happier. We thoroughly enjoy the area as a whole and especially the

Somersett community we reside in.

Sipping on certain beverages can not only make you smarter over time, but also improve your memory, mood and quality

of sleep. Opting for drinks that contain naturally mind-enhancing organic compounds can be part of an overall mental health strat-egy. Here are five liquids that benefit your brain and body based on ingredients with well-studied healthy compounds. Consider including them this month for your Valentine’s day dinners! And yes—red wine made the list!

Good Ol’ Fashioned Green TeaAs if we haven’t heard enough about the qualities of this pe-

rennial favorite beverage—one of the most ancient still enjoyed around the world. Green tea provides a treasure trove of com-pounds that apparently can turn us into slim, svelte, alert, athletic super-beings. Among its mind-enhancing compounds are poly-phenols such as EGCG, which has been proven to prevent certain neurotransmitters from degrading. In other words, green tea helps you stay young in the head—and maintain acuity in cognition. EGCG in green tea is also established to fend off anxiety and de-pression, giving the beverage the paradoxical quality of assisting

with alertness while promoting calmness. Perfect for the Valen-tine’s Day romantic dinner jitters!

Your Brain on Beet JuiceThe potent juice of this deep-red root is rife with nitrites—com-

pounds that support the relaxation of blood vessels. This results in an increased flow of freshly oxygenated blood throughout the body. Your brain directly benefits from this beet-induced influx of freshness, and the root juice can help avert age-related declines in cognitive function. While it’s a bit of an acquired taste and often hard to stomach in large amounts, just a few ounces of fresh beet juice a day can do a brain good. Also—it’s red. Kind of romantic?

Prevent Mental Decline with WineThis information is not to recommend that you use wine to

manage your mental state, as that could be a slippery slope to a hangover. Rather, research does support the fact that wine, in moderation, can boost your memory. It’s not that you get bright-er from boozing—but that simple sipping of red wine can pro-tect against inflammation-producing proteins. Such proteins are linked to memory disorders including Alzheimer’s. One study even revealed that moderate wine drinkers were approximately 53 percent less prone to suffer memory loss than their teetotaler friends.

Apple JuiceAdults can benefit from reintegrating this favorite beverage

of children. In fact, Apple juice may be even more beneficial for those over 50, according to studies. The juice contains high lev-els of acetylcholine, a compound linked to memory preservation. Acetylcholine is also an essential chemical in the brain’s process of learning. An apple a day can help you learn something new until you fall from the tree of life. For valentine’s day, you could try a little hard cider for an extra kick and still get some of the benefits listed above.

al nurturing environment that provides an alternative to the big name gyms. Alpha Bodz will focus on specialized and personalized programs infused with Curt’s own wealth of knowledge through personal experi-ence as a professional bodybuilder.

Bodybuilding is a passion that Curt shares with his elder son Grant, 21, with whom he competed as part of the only father and son duo to enter the 2012 Las Vegas Classic. Grant won in the novice class light division while Curt won the open class middle weight division. Grant lives in Yuba City and is a certified personal trainer with two year of

Junior College studies under his belt. He’s fo-cusing on health and fitness in academics and career, his most recent job being as a sales rep-resentative at a gym in the Sacramento area. Overall, Grant has al-ready competed in 4 bodybuilding shows and placed 1st twice and 2nd twice in his division.

“Reno is the type of place where you can really do all of this—the career, the family life, the community ties and even launching a new business. It has a special feeling,” says Curt. The Higgins’ also enjoy get-ting away from Reno to various spots in California, but love the feeling of returning home. With the family living together, they have found a kind of happy gravity in Somersett.

Curt Higgins is in many ways all about building—building materials on the career front, bodybuilding on the business outlook and building roots in Reno as their grandson grows up. The best thing about their lives? “Being grandparents,” they practically say in unison. “It’s so new but it’s given us an immensity to look forward to,” says Whitney. Val-entines Day at the Higgins household this year will be busy—all about building, all about the baby—and obviously—all about love. And on that note, Curt adds that he fully embraces the phrase that for every great man, there is a great woman behind him.

For Kevin Croghan, the process of fit-ness is more than just working out.

With over 16 years in the fitness indus-try in several capacities, his approach is holistic, embracing the multiple currents that create health. Degreed in Kinesiolo-gy, Croghan’s professional training career has spanned health clubs, learning insti-tutions, corporations and his own facility in Reno, always with the same underlying passion: to facilitate the strengthening of the mind/body relationship in clients. He is equally passionate about nutrition and food--the fuel for the body’s endeavors and expressions, and has trained exten-sively in the culinary arts. His passion has also led him to volunteer at Reno high schools, sharing his love of movement and food with at-risk youth.

Movement is LifeFrom the foundations of movement and

nutrition to the nuances of sport-specific athletic training, his practice is based on

the essentials. Flexibility, strength and focus can all be developed, and optimal function arises in the context of attention. “A trainer can help to direct attention to address a person’s specific body mechan-ics, strengths and weaknesses. My role is to be a positive vessel for others to reach their pinnacle of health and fitness,” said Croghan.

A Somersett resident himself, Croghan enjoys running with his dog, Kilo, in the neighborhood’s heart-rate-raising hills in just about any weather. He wanted to bring his passion for food and fitness to the local community in a way that made sense--something that added a deeper ed-ucational element to the personal training aspects of his vocation. To that end, he will be extending his services in the neighbor-hood through two programs custom-de-signed for residents. The offerings are a kind of blueprint for community based fitness education--a model that shares

straightforward information and hands-on experiences. Croghan will also offer

FITNESS FOCUS

similar classes in a volunteer capacity this year through Washoe County school dis-trict volunteer groups.

Sunday Dinners at Town Center: A Community Culinary Adventure

By Spring of 2014, Croghan will launch Sunday Dinners at the Somersett Town Center, an ongoing series of weekly sem-inars open to the public. Sunday Dinners are designed for people of all ages to learn about the foundations of nutrition, meal preparation and optimal fuel intake in a dynamic, fun environment. Participants will enjoy a course of learning that mesh-es the beauty and pleasure of food with the fundamentals of optimally fueling the body. “The vision is to eliminate the many myths in the world of diet and enjoy com-munal food prep.” The Sunday Dinner series offers informational dialogue that culminates in delicious shared meals at Town Center. “A way for residents to get to know nutrition, the joy of preparing deep-ly healthy food, and their neighbors.”

Physical Education A second program planned to launch by

Spring of 2014 is the Physical Education

series--a more intensive take on personal training in a group setting. With offerings for children and for adults, Croghan has designed the series as a form of communi-ty health empowerment. The curriculum includes a safe and inviting introduction to resistance training, biomechanics, car-dio-respiratory training and flexibility training. The group setting offers an al-ternative to traditional 1:1 personal train-ing and helps Croghan reach more of the community.

For Croghan, it is important to work hard, recognizing that working hard is what gives us the freedom for play. Croghan’s vision is one in which fitness is a collaborative and community-wide activi-ty, mutually supported in a positive, family environment.

Kevin Croghan is happy to continue the dialogue and available at:

One hundred years ago, cancer was viewed as a death sentence and peo-

ple worried it spread from one person to another. So in 1913 fifteen concerned doc-tors and businessmen formed the American Cancer Society’s precursor organization to bring cancer into the open. Today, three mil-lion volunteers nationwide carry out the So-ciety’s lifesaving work, including thousands in Northern Nevada.

Society donors fund Nobel Prize winning research; free local patient, caregiver and family services; and prevention and early detection programs through local events like the Suits and Sneakers golf and gala taking place the weekend of June 6th and 7th and The Big Dig on September 13th. (See side-bar)

Although cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S., 1.2 million Ameri-cans have been saved from cancer during the

past 20 years with deaths declining 20 per-cent between 1991 and 2009. Today about 14 million Americans are cancer survivors. More than 9,000 of the 13,830 Nevadans di-agnosed with cancer in 2013 survived, due in large part to American Cancer Society research, prevention and early detection education, advocacy and lifesaving patient services.

The American Cancer Society is the larg-est private, not-for-profit funder of cancer research in the U.S, investing more than $3.8 billion to date in the quest to better un-derstand, prevent, detect and treat cancer. $720,000 is currently at work at the Univer-sity of Nevada, Reno.

In 2013 more than 1,000 Northern Neva-da cancer patients and caregivers received more than 3,000 Society services including free information and guidance to cancer pa-tients, their caregivers and families at cancer

resource centers housed at St. Mary’s Hospi-tal and Renown Regional Medical Center.

Volunteer Road to Recovery drivers pro-vide free transportation to treatment for patients who can’t get to lifesaving appoint-ments on their own. Trained Look Good…Feel Better volunteer cosmetologists teach women with cancer how to combat cosmetic side effects of treatment such as hair loss and skin problems. Patients traveling long dis-tances to Reno for treatment can receive free or discounted lodging while in treatment.

Cancer information and support is avail-able 24/7 via trained compassionate opera-tors at 800-224-2345 and on cancer.org. And the Society sponsors an online workshop called “Cancer Thriving and Surviving” to help survivors cope with life after treatment.

The American Cancer Society’s goal is to save 1,000 lives a day from cancer, an in-crease from the current 400 lives saved today.

Looking to be Found We’re hard to “Find” on purpose! We think an address off the beaten path is

worth the hunt and discovery, “The Find”…. if you will. We chose to remove ourselves from the center of attention by intention. We’re lo-cated in a super roomy warehouse on Longley Lane. The location is by design.

Speaking of “by design”...We hand select each piece of furniture and

home décor accessory in our showroom. You’ll notice we have a penchant for Old World, Eu-ropean style, rustic pieces. We love hinges, tufting, reclaimed wood, wrought iron, dis-tressed leather wingback recliners, down sec-tional sofas, Provenzal statement beds (with 7-foot-high linen headboards), hand cast iron chandeliers and original oil canvas artwork en-cased in big chunky frames.

Our specialty?Dining room tables, couches and bedroom

sets. We receive new product every week. Our inventory is ever-changing and fluid. We lik-en ourselves to Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel…. sans the high price tags!

Norwegian Wood? Au Contraire... Peruvian Wood

Hand crafted, hand carved solid woods from Peru, India, Brazil and Mexico make for gor-geous, one-of-a-kind, stylish artisan pieces at surprisingly low prices.
