4-H: Breast Cancer Awareness Month This is a very busy month for 4-H as they are raising money for their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month fundraiser. They are selling bows, memorial ribbons, bouncy balls, car magnets, and bracelets all for $1. They are also doing a penny war between Ms. Clark, Mr. Bostic, and Mrs. Melton. The winner will be covered in pink during the Breast Cancer Awareness Pep Rally on November 4th from 8:30am-10:00am. If you would like to buy something or donate change to the penny war, a 4 H member will be bringing around a cart everyday. All proceeds will be donated to Norville Breast Cancer Center. 4-H encourages everyone to donate to help to find a cure. -Noah Tickle and Mason Wyrick

Fun on the Farm Fun on the farm was a huge success. McGwire Jones, the leader of the Junior Civitan Club, was interviewed, and he explained that Fun on the Farm is when you get to go through a corn maze and ride a hayride and you also get to pet all the animals and even hold some of them. He said that it was something that the club just did for fun. McGwire Jones stated that “Fun on the farm is an event hosted by the AO Civitan Group. It is meant to be a place specifically for children with autism so that families can come there to have fun and not feel judged.” I asked him why he felt the need to help out, he said “We helped because the AO Civitan group sponsors the Clover Garden Junior Civitan group, so we do our best to help them with any projects they have.” McGwire was asked if he had any interactions with the animals, he replied “No, we did not pet any animals, but they did have a petting zoo area.” His closing statement concluded that “As volunteers, we are there to help make sure everything runs smoothly and safely. Many of us were designated to watch different areas and help anyone who came by.” -Daniel Tickle and Collin West

On Monday, October 17th Clover Garden held a Career Expo in the gym. There were a wide variety of booths to visit including the fire department, Police department, The Army, The Navy, The Air Force, nursing, teacher, youth minister, and many more. Some of the teachers here at Clover Garden also set up booths. Mr. Bos c set up a booth talking about being a chemist and Mrs. Koehler had a booth talking about computer programming. When asked the importance of the event the students gave the same answer. “It’s important for students to learn what they want to do so they can be er plan for their future.” The adult volunteers had different answers. The Alamance Chamber of Commerce representa ves said, “It is important to show the opportunity that the chamber can give to our employees and the community.” An engineer and youth

Odyssey of the Mind Clover Garden’s Ms. Whitehurst is se ng up a compe ve theatre project for her 3rd and 4th grade students under the name ‘Odyssey of the Mind’. The main idea of this project is to help the students develop leadership and social skills while having fun in the process. Their goal - to create a skit/play with everything designed by the kids (costumes, sets, script, etc.) In the ac vity, there are two teams of students compe ng against each other for first place. Team 1’s play revolves around superheroes, while Team 2’s play is based on historical artwork. Each team will create their play from scratch and present it to the rest of the classroom. Ms. Whitehurst hopes to do an official school performance in January before the finals in March. As a side note, she also needs scrap fabrics and PVC pipe for the students to use in making their plays.

-Brendan Franklin

Ms. Whitehurst has recently made the decision to donate 11 inches of her hair to Pantene’s Beau ful Lengths for breast cancer. We asked her what her reason was for dona ng her hair, she said cancer runs in her family and she feels that she should help out. She tries to donate every one to three years. Mrs. Whitehurst stated, “Everyone should feel beau ful, no ma er what that means.” This was a very admirable thing to do and I know that everyone at Clover Garden is very proud of her.

Middle/High School Movie Review

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween has just been released October 21st and it did very well. The highly anticipated movie did not disappoint me, although it has been rated 2 and a half stars out of 5. I don't know the reasoning for this low rating because in my opinion this movie was incredible. The plot was very original and inspiring in its own way. It is about a teenage girl who just wants to have a little fun. Her father does not want this to happen, but lucky for her, he is too scared to put his foot down. Madea, however, is not scared in the least, and that is what makes this movie so hilarious. The interactions between the characters will have you falling out of your seat laughing. Boo! A Madea Halloween will not disappoint.

Elementary Movie Review The movie Storks is about birds that used to deliver babies but now they deliver packages. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop, before his boss finds out. They have a revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world. The movie is rated PG and has a 7.1/10 rating. A cra-zy fact is that the title doesn’t appear on the screen until the end of the movie.

Head to Head

Cat vs. Dog

Cats are the superior pets. This is because they do not require as much constant a en on, but don’t mind receiving it. They all have very different personali es to match any poten al owners personality. Cats are easier to care for, in general, and eat cheaper and eat less. Almost any cat can stay indoors, while many breeds of dogs have to stay outdoors because of their size. This is why cats are be er.

-Conner Clayton

Dogs are the best pets for people. That’s why they are called “man's best friend.” Dog walking will o en mean mee ng other dog owners. Therefore, you can make new friends at the same me as your dog! Dogs provide us with a sense of emo onal wellbeing thanks to the uncondi onal love they give, which is why they’re also great company and comfort for people who live alone.

Art and Photography A er six months of prepara on, Mrs. Strickland hosted an art show and sale in the gym on Saturday, October 15th. The art show brought a constant flow of people in the doors to buy the pictures. The show was from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. By the end of the show, over 100 of the 350 pictures available were sold. The final count isn’t in yet, as people can s ll purchase pictures up to a week a er the show. I asked the school director, Mr. Fin-nigan, to sum up what he thought of the art show, he said “I believe the art show today has been fantas c! It was nice to see all of our students’ artwork on display. It was absolutely beau ful.” He later added, “seeing the children’s artwork has just been fabulous. Seeing their fac-es light up in the frames when they see their artwork is just something very special, especially to the li le ones”. “There were a lot of people who helped put this event together and I would like to thank each one of them for their me and dedica on to this event. A special thank you to Mrs. Strickland and her family for all they did to make the art showcase possible.” “It all came together very nice-ly”. Mr. Ward said “I think you guys did a really good job, all the art looks fantas c. I really like the photography, the photography is excellent, and I think all the kids did a won-derful job on their artwork”. Tiffany Allen, who has two kids at Clover Garden said: “I think the art show is a won-derful way to raise money and see what all our kids are doing”. James Callahan who works at the company that framed the pictures was also at the show. He says his job is taking art to the schools and working with the teachers about how and where to display them and have an art show. Before the art show was finished, I asked Mrs. Strickland what her goal amount of money raised was, and she replied “as much as possible”. In the end, she was sa sfied with the outcome and says everything turned out good.

The pictures were all made by Mrs. Strickland’s art and photography classes, ranging from Kindergarten to 12th grade. According to Mrs. Strickland, she’s done art shows before in her teaching career, but this is the first me she’s done an art show at Clover Garden. When asked what her favorite part was, Mrs. Strickland said “Seeing

how excited kids are seeing their pictures professionally framed and on display”. There won’t be art shows every year because “It needs me to have a buildup of excite-ment”, but there will be more. In the future art shows/sales, there will be all new pictures each me, as the ones that don’t sell are not put in the next show.
