From Pastor LaurieSometimes in browsing the internet, I come across a masterful column or article that I wish I had written or could change just enough to make it my own. Recently I discovered a blog by a thoughtful and articulate priest who wrote the following which I am unabashedly “borrowing” as my Christmas/New Year’s message to each of you.

“Long before there was any question about the political correctness of wishing others a “Merry Christmas,” the pastor of the parish of my youth took the occasion every year of telling us why he preferred to wish everyone a “Happy Christmas.” He’d point out that we never wish anyone a “Merry Easter” and would question whether this adjective for Christmas, dating back to the 17th century, was the best one for us to use today. The first printed Christmas card (1843) wished recipients a “Merry Christmas” but at the end of A Visit From St. Nicholas (‘Twas the night before…), Clement Moore wishes his readers a “Happy Christmas.” The history, then, is mixed. “Merry” seems rather light and even “Happy” might fail to bear the weight of this day’s wishes. What kind of Christmas do we hope and pray our family and friends will have? My prayer is that you will have a Joyful Christmas: a Christmas rooted in the inner serenity deep faith provides, strong enough to survive the disappointments and sorrows life delivers to our doorstep and exuberant enough to celebrate life’s happiest times. May the birthday of Christ touch you with deep joy... I pray, too, that you will have a Peaceful Christmas: the peace the world so clearly is unable to give itself; the peace that broken hearts long for; the peace that is ours to share with one another in forgiveness, kindness and charity. May the birthday of Christ sow seeds of peace in your heart... Finally, I pray that you have a Hopeful Christmas. So much in the world around us encroaches on our capacity to hope: a spirit abroad that seems intent on draining the beauty and poetry from our lives while our ever burgeoning knowledge robs us of awe and reverence before the mystery of life, of love and of God. May the birthday of Christ renew hope in your heart...” I could not have expressed better my sentiments for each of you in this beautiful holy season. Wishing you a Joyful, Peaceful, Hopeful Christmas and should your Christmas be Merry and Happy, too – all the better!

Blessings,

Pastor Laurie

Sundays in the GablesEach Sunday morning,

three worship experiences are offered:

9:00 a.m. Worship in the ChapelA more intimate and meditative worship experience in Moye Chapel. Holy Communion is celebrated weekly and music is presented by one of our talented soloists. Enjoy the Coffee Bar before and after worship.

11:00 a.m. Worship in the SanctuaryWe gather in the beauty of our historic sanctuary to be engaged in meaningful worship, which feeds our spiritual hunger. Sunday, December 21– The Fourth Sunday of Advent

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom God favors!” On this Sunday before Christmas we light the candle of Love as we hear the angel’s song as recorded in Luke 2:14. Following worship, the Women‘s Fellowship will present their annual Holiday Silver Tea. Mark your calendars for a Sunday which is guaranteed to put you in the spirit of the Advent and Christmas season. Then join us at 2:00 p.m., as we go Christmas caroling to our homebound members and friends.

Sunday, December 14 - The Third Sunday of Advent

“Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth.” The Song of John the Baptist from Luke 3:1-18 reminds us to prepare a way for the Lord as the Advent Candle of Joy is lighted.

Sunday, December 7 - The Second Sunday of Advent “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” On this day, we will light the Advent Candle of Peace as we hear the Song of Zechariah from Luke 1:67-79.

Sundays in AdventThe Songs of Advent

Throughout the season of Advent, we will look at the poetic words uttered around the birth of the Messiah.

Sunday, November 30 - The First Sunday of Advent “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” We begin the beautiful journey to Christmas by lighting the first of our Advent Wreath candles, the Candle of Hope and hearing Mary’s Song as recorded in Luke 1:46-55. The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated at both services.

Sunday, December 28 – First Sunday after Christmas

“Now let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation.” The ancient Song of Simeon as found in Luke 2:28-32 will be our focus as we celebrate the good news that Jesus is born again in our hearts and in our world. Join us for a celebration of Christmas through carols, readings, and prayers.

Sunday, January 18 – MLK Jr. Weekend

We gather on this Martin Luther King, Jr. remembrance Sunday to recommit ourselves to the principals and dreams of this modern-day prophet. Join us for spirited music, meaningful worship, and to hear anew the challenging and beautiful words of Dr. King.

Sunday, January 25 – Marcus Borg

Marcus Borg, visiting scholar, will be with us to present, as always, an inspiring, intriguing and thoughtful message during the 11:00 a.m. service. Internationally known in both academic and church circles as a biblical and Jesus scholar, Dr. Borg is the author of nineteen books, including the best-seller Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time. Described by The New York Times as “a leading figure in his generation of Jesus scholars,” he has appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and “Dateline,” PBS’s “News Hour,” ABC’s “Evening News” and “Prime Time” with Peter Jennings, NPR’s “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross, and several National Geographic programs.

Sundays in Epiphany

Sunday, January 11 – First Sunday after Epiphany

On this Sunday we recall the Baptism of the Lord, we recall our own baptism into the faith and family of God. The Celebration of Holy Communion will be celebrated.

Sunday, January 4 – Epiphany

The term epiphany means “to show,” “to make known,” or even “to reveal.” In Western churches, we remember the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who, by so doing, “reveal” Jesus to the world as Lord. In Hispanic and Latin cultures, as well as some places in Europe, it is known as el Día de los Tres Reyes, or Three Kings’ Day. Join us for a very special celebration as we welcome the Three Kings into our midst and experience the joy of this great tradition.

What is a Blue Christmas Service? For many of us, Christmas is a bittersweet time of year. It is a time for remembering those persons who have been a part of our lives in the past, but who are now gone. On Monday evening, December 22, you are invited to Moye Chapel for a Blue Christmas Service. This quiet, meditative service makes time for remembering, time for sharing our hurting places with God, and time for preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ. The service begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a quiet gathering around a punch bowl and some cookies hosted by the Called to Care Team. The setting will be lovely. The music will be beautiful. The only other things we need are you, your memories, and your prayers.

This year a portion of our Christmas Eve services offering will go to the Christmas Fund Offering (formerly known as the Veterans of the Cross offering), one of four Special Mission Offerings of the United Church of Christ. This offering is an expression of joy and gratitude to, and for, those who serve the church. It is administered by the United Church of Christ Board for Ministerial Assistance.

“It wasn’t easy picking up the telephone to share with you my present situation. In fact it was one of the most humiliating experiences of my life although it reminded me that grace still happens. Sometimes we as clergy persons lose sight of God’s grace when the negative stuff comes into our lives.”

These eloquent words are from a pastor who is the recipient of the caring and concern of those who contribute to the Christmas Fund Offering.

Gifts to the Christmas Fund help provide pension and health premium supplementation to low-income retirees, emergency assistance to the families of clergy and lay employees and Christmas gift checks to hundreds of pastors who have retired after many years of serving small, rural, or other churches that could not afford to pay a pension.

Your gifts to the Christmas Fund are needed more than ever to help the growing number of ministerial retirees whose low income and lack of eligibility for Social Security make it difficult to meet increasing living costs. This is your opportunity to participate in God’s promise of renewal by enabling this ministry of compassion and care.

If you will not be in church on Christmas Eve, please consider dropping off or mailing a check (with Christmas Fund in the memo line) to the church office, or give online at http://gablesucc.org/christmas-fund so you can participate in this important offering.

Originating in Ireland, where it is known as Nollaig na mBan, Women’s Christmas began as a day when the women, who often carried the domestic responsibilities all year, took Epiphany as an occasion to enjoy a break and celebrate together at the end of the holidays.

Whether your domestic duties are many or few, Women’s Christmas is a good time to pause and take a break from whatever has kept you busy and hurried in the past weeks or months. As the Christmas season comes to a close, this is an occasion both to celebrate with friends and also to spend time in reflection before diving into the responsibilities of this New Year.

Claim some intentional time set apart! Using the creative images and poetry of Jan Richardson, we will reflect on the past year, participate in a Native American bowl burning cleansing ritual, write haikus, enjoy a meditative walk under the Banyan trees, share stories, fellowship and simply begin this New Year together. Please donate a dish to our Vegetarian Pot Luck Lunch.

In January, we gather back in the church Library for conversation and sharing as we discuss what the New Year holds for us. A continental breakfast is provided, so roll out of bed, throw on your jeans, and be with some sisters on the journey.

The Season for the Angel TreeGift of $40 for each Angel

Every season of Advent, Gables UCC places a Christmas tree in the Fellowship Hall that is decorated with angels. This year’s angels are the Haitian students from the Roger Dunwell School in Tete L’Etang that our Senior High Youth visited during their summer mission trip. $40 for each angel will provide one month of school.

This wonderful monetary gift will then be hand delivered in early January.

January 11-February 22 Housing Africa’s Children (HAC), an organization dedicated to supporting orphans in Africa, will be teaming up with our Sunday School children for a very special cause in January 2015. Founder/President of HAC and church member Drew Sandbulte will be meeting with our children from second grade - high school to share with them his inspiration and need to begin HAC, the similarities and differences in the way orphan children in Africa live in comparison to their own lives, and initiate an action plan for how our children can help those that HAC is supporting. Through a discussion session where the children will get to learn about the life of the orphans HAC supports through video and photos, the children will then engage in a fundraising opportunity to help support the basic needs of food, shelter, medical care and education to the children in Africa.

This has proven to be a successful initiative in other churches HAC has partnered with, giving children an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of other children their own age, as well as open their eyes up to a world that we tend to be very sheltered from living in America. By the end of this initiative, we hope that the children in our congregation will have a more global perspective on poverty and culture, learn tangible ways to assist “the least of these” in our modern world, and empower them to go out into the world eager to make a difference in the lives of others less fortunate than them.

This program year we have a very active Middle School Youth Group, full of energy and enthusiasm. Over sixteen youth are part of the entering sixth grade class, which means that this particular group has the potential to determine Youth Group ministries for the next six years.

To help them become a strong group that trusts and looks out for each other, they are scheduled to participate in the Ropes Course offered by FIU TRAC program. This program helps develop leadership skills, communication, and trust among the participants.

They’ve had two sessions in October and November. They will return for more in late January. So, keep your eye on the youth of the church, for they will amaze us.

The Preschool of Coral Gables United Church of ChristEarlyChildhoodCenter

Science for preschoolers? Absolutely!

This year, ECC is very excited to be working with Miami’s own Frost Science Museum to implement a curriculum they designed expressly for very young children. ECHOS, short for Early Childhood Hands-On Science, is a research based model that is clearly designed to help children learn about the world they live in. Even more importantly, it helps children learn how to learn about the world – the how of doing science.

The ECHOS approach includes the modeling of science process skills, along with the use of guided inquiry and exploration. In small groups, our three and four year old children follow a sequence of planned activities around a central theme each month, building on what they already know. They learn how to observe, how to ask questions and how to explore for answers. We love how the Science Museum has integrated science into a broader context for children by including songs, art activities, and literature that extend each monthly theme.

We think ECHOS is a great addition and a perfect complement to our existing curriculum base. It’s a thrill to see our little ones extending their new found skills to their own explorations on the playground. For more information on the ECHOS program please go to http://miamisci.org/echos/.

As always, we invite you to tour ECC for yourself, whether you are a prospective parent or a curious church member. The best time to see the morning program in action is between 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. There is no need for an appointment, just come and see us as we are. Registration begins in February and classes fill up fast, so the earlier children are put on the waiting list the better. Come in soon and don’t forget to tell your friends and neighbors!

ECC is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for children who are two to four years old by September 1. The morning program runs from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. for the two and three year old children and from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for the Pre-K4 class.

For more information, please contact us at 305-444-9792 or at [email protected].

Justice&Witness Family Promise A mother loses her job, a father is kept from working by an injury, a family is forced from their home by fire or natural disaster. Healthcare costs soar, public transportation is underfunded, affordable housing is almost impossible to find. These are the reasons why families now make up 40 percent of the homeless population, and why one out of every four homeless people is a child. In response to this crisis, a national organization called Family Promise seeks to bring the faith community together to help families regain their housing, their independence, and their dignity.

During the fall, two organizational meetings were held at Gables UCC to begin dreaming into reality a Family Promise affiliate right here in Miami-Dade. Many folks from our congregation attended, became excited, and have committed themselves to helping establish a Family Promise program. We need a minimum of thirteen congregations to make this possible so during December and early January, Pastor Laurie is meeting with other clergy, rabbis and their congregations to invite them to join us in this dream. Once a significant number of congregations have expressed interest we will gather back and begin to build the various committees necessary to help establish this program locally. If you would like to be added to the list for future meetings or to receive more information, please contact Pastor Laurie or Drew Sandbulte, who is our congregation’s liaison to Family Promise, during this time of development and dreaming.

Thinking About Becoming a Member of the Church?Inquirers’ GatheringSunday December 14 12:15 p.m. in the Library

If you don’t want to check your mind at the church door….. If you know that God’s love embraces all people, no matter who they are…

If you want religion with relevancy… If you believe that faith requires tenderness and courage, a kind of big love that is

committed to changing people’s lives…ours and others… If you’ve wished for an open and embracing community of faith to nurture your spirit,

grow your faith, and raise your children… Then we warmly invite you to help us build the family of Gables UCC.

Come if you would like to inquire about becoming a member. Come if you just want to inquire more about who we are, what we stand for, and what we believe. This gathering will also give you a chance to meet some of our members and staff and give us an opportunity to meet you. Childcare and a light lunch will be provided. Contact Pastor Laurie at [email protected] or 305.448.7421 ext. 116 to RSVP or for more information.

COMING IN FEBRUARY...ANNUAL MEETING SUNDAYSunday, February 1

It is Annual Meeting Sunday at Gables UCC, and all members of the church are encouraged to be with us as Pastor Laurie offers a State of the Church address as her morning message. Following worship, all members of Gables UCC are invited to stay for the annual meeting followed by a tailgate luncheon in honor of Super Bowl Sunday. Come hear the reports of the past year and celebrate the vision and possibilities of the year yet ahead.

Are you interested in being part of a church board? Would you like to nominate someone for a leadership role? The Church Leadership Committee is looking for a few good folks to serve the church in a leadership position. For nominations, please contact Margaret Roles at [email protected] or 305.498.3333.

Leave More Than An Empty Pew...Leave a LegacyOne of the great gifts of this congregation is its Legacy Fund, an endowment fund that was created many years ago to provide for the future of the church. Because of the generosity of members past and present, our Legacy Fund provides additional revenue to our yearly budget, giving us the opportunity to provide more outreach, more programming, and more ministries. It also serves as a safety net to ensure that the important witness of this church will continue for generations to come. For more information on how you can remember Coral Gables Congregational UCC in your estate planning, contact Pastor Laurie or any member of the Legacy Committee.

Community Arts Program (CAP) Conservatory for the Arts Faculty Spotlight: Elizabeth Hsieh

Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Elizabeth Hsieh began her piano studies devotedly under the guidance of Vladimir Khokhlov at the age of thirteen, upon moving to the United States. Her orchestral debut came at age sixteen, playing Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.2 in d minor, Op. 40.

Elizabeth has been the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships and has won many piano competitions, such as the Florida Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition, Florida Teacher’s Association District Competition, Tampa Bay Symphony Young Artist Competition, Chiang-Wen Yeh International Piano Young Artist Concerto Competitions, Pinault Musical Society International Piano Competition, MTNA Collegiate Artist Southern Division Competition, and International Russian-American Music Association Young Virtuoso’s Competition.

Elizabeth has been teaching piano and theory to students of all levels, ages, and talents for over ten years. Her ultimate goal as a piano teacher is to make a difference in the lives of her students through music, so they can grow and experience the joy that playing the piano can bring throughout their life.

Elizabeth continues to give numerous performances, both as a soloist and collaborative pianist. She recently became a member of La Folia Piano-Guitar Duo, with Belgium classical guitarist Sam Desmet. Elizabeth is currently also a doctoral candidate, under the tutelage of Professor Tian Ying, at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. CAP is thrilled with the expertise, experience, and care that Elizabeth brings to the CAP piano faculty and to its students!

Community Arts Program ALL-STAR Jazz EnsembleRecords for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington

The Community Arts Program (CAP) ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble hits the recording studio again in January to prepare its CD of Ellington tunes for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 20th Essentially Ellington festival. It’s a real privilege to be included in submissions from top youth jazz bands from around the country that receive comments and adjudications from the likes of Wynton Marsalis and members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

In May 2014, the CAP ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble was—for the second year in a row—a finalist at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. There, the Ensemble performed as one of 15 other top bands chosen from all the recordings submitted from throughout the United States and Canada.

The greatest gain for our CAP youth is that this aspires to create community around a common interest in the greatest achievements in American music. Through Jazz at Lincoln Center’s sharing of performance practices, techniques and musical meanings passed down from generation to generation, our students gain a powerful understanding of their place in the continuum of our culture. CAP looks forward to sharing its 2015 recording for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 20th Essentially Ellington festival!
