SACRED SILENCE IN CHURCH BEFORE MASS In an age of unprecedented noise, liturgical silence is of the greatest importance. The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace.

INTRODUCING A BOOK WRITTEN BY ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY
“Less Than A Year” by Peggy Thomas
About the Author Peggy Thomas, nee Margaret Standish, started out in 1942 in New Jersey and after many vicissitudes, now feels at home in Yorkshire. It's not true that her teaching career lasted less than a year. She now teaches modern Greek with the University of the Third Age. She is a member of the Good Shepherd parish community.
The book is available in the bookshop in Hebden Bridge or online. CTS E-BOOKS Your favourite CTS books - now available as ebooks! This summer, CTS will be making hundreds of new and classic books available as ebooks. Starting with 35 titles which includes booklets on prayer and spirituality, stories of inspirational people, books to help you learn more about our faith. Available on Kindle, Kobo and iBook at www.ctsbooks.org/ebooks
PARISH HOUSE I AM DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE that we have new neighbours. They moved into the presbytery on Monday and are looking for peace and quiet. Please respect their privacy and access to the property. Thank you.
PRAYERS FOR THE SICK Please remember to pass on the names of anyone who should be on our list of those to pray for (on the bulletin) to Gez Hodgson (details at end of bulletin).
"Children are individuals and should be treated as such"
Senior management in a fictional London school claimed to believe this. So why did Peggy Thomas get in trouble when she put it into practice?
Review
“A story that needs to be told. Very hard to put down.” - Sue Atkinson
“A great, sad but funny, candid story.” - Leila Berg

CARITAS LEEDS LAUNCH CARITAS LEEDS will be formally launched by Bishop Marcus on Saturday 23rd September at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College in Leeds between 1:00pm-5:00 pm. It will consist of addresses by Bishop Marcus, Dr Philip McCarthy, Chief Executive of Catholic Social Action Network (CSAN) and the coordinator of Caritas Leeds. Participants will have opportunity to attend a number of short but engaging workshops and networking
NEW ARRANGEMENTS FOR FIRST RECONCILIATION, FIRST HOLY
COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION Sacrament of Confirmation It is a cause of concern that in the Diocese of Leeds a large proportion of those who are baptised into the Catholic Church (68%) and make their first Holy Communion (58%) do not receive also the Sacrament of Confirmation. This means that we are failing, as a diocesan family, to complete the initiation into the Catholic Faith of a considerable number of our children and young people. Such a failure deprives many of our young people of the objective grace of the Sacrament of Confirmation; the spiritual gift which provides the vital help they need in their young and adult lives. The Bishop has decided therefore to change the age at which the Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred from the age of 14 to 11; that is, from school yr 9 to yr 6, the last year of primary education. This, will enable us to focus on and provide a more integral preparation and celebration of the sacraments of initiation within the primary years of education. The most obvious change is that there will be NO First Communions in our parish in 2018.
6
The Bishop has asked that we separate out the preparation for; First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. So those going in to Year 3 in September 2017 will be invited to prepare for First Reconciliation only and then when they begin Year 4 in September 2018 they will begin to prepare for First Holy Communion. And in 2019 Confirmation will be celebrated at the beginning of Year 6, which means the children preparing during year 5. This all sounds a little more complicated than it really is and we will work it out together.

A CARMELITE PERSPECTIVE ON JUSTICE & PEACE
There are still 6 places available on our Day of Reflection. This takes place on Saturday 16 September between 10:30am and 5pm. We are going to the Carmelite monastery at Wood Hall near Wetherby and the nuns there will be sharing with us their perspectives on working for Justice & Peace. There will also be time for private reflection and, weather permitting, time to take a look around the lovely grounds at Wood Hall. If you are interested in going then please email the office on [email protected] Just tell us: who you are, the names of anyone coming with you and whether you need or can offer a lift. There is no charge for coming along, though we will, as usual, take a collection to help defray some of the
expenses.

Reflection by St Teresa of Avila
Today may there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.
