W hen I first began my work in 1972, teaching Koko to sign in American Sign Language (ASL), I had no idea that it would evolve into much more than an “ape language” project! ✿ As we began to learn how much like humans gorillas are emotionally and cognitively, we also learned

how gorillas (and other great apes) in Africa were becoming critically endangered which is when our focus shifted to applied studies for the benefit of both captive and free-living gorillas and other great apes. ✿

Today Koko and I are focused on protecting gorillas from the increasing threat of extinction — and on using “ape language” to improve their lives in zoos and sanctuaries. Our program of Conservation through Communication has enabled Koko to not only to be the face of all gorillas, an ambassador for her species, but also the “Voice of Nature,” as she was designated at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference. ✿ You help make all of this work possible and it is why we cherish your ongoing support so very much. Thank you!

Gorillas need our help and they need it now: to bring attention to their plight, to their intelligence, to their emotional awareness, their sensitivity and their amazing

being. If we lose them, we lose a precious part of our family, which we are just beginning to know and understand. As African conservation scientist Denis Ndeloh says,

“if we can’t save our closest living relatives, what hope is there for any other wildlife …” This is a call to awaken to our kinship with them, actually to our kinship with all life.

Established in 1976, The Gorilla Foundation continues to make breakthroughs via the only interspecies communication study in history featuring gorillas.

Mission: Conservation through Communication: To learn about gorillas by communicating with them and apply our knowledge to advance great ape care and conservation through research, education and empathy.

Communication-Based Care: From the very beginning, Project Koko, has been built on the value of “two-way communication,” empowering the gorillas to guide their own care, and enriching both their and our lives.

Care-based Research: A strong communicative bond with the gorillas enables us to perform continuous

cognitive studies by simply interacting with them naturally, and recording all of our observations in diary notes and videos.
