U.S. Army – Be Informed

In this newsletter we are highlighting three components of the U.S. Army; the Active Component, Army National Guard, and the Army Reserve.

It is important for young men and women, parents and other engaged civilians to know about the U.S. Army so they can either make an informed choice or help others who may want to take advantage of the educational benefits, skilled training and service to country that the U.S. Army provides.

Besides the U.S. Army’s Active Component, their are two Reserve Components—the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. Both Reserve Components are primarily composed of part-time soldiers who train once a month and conduct two to three weeks of annual training each year. Both the Active Component and the Army Reserve are organized under Title 10 of the United States Code. The National Guard is organized under Title 32, meaning that, while the Army National Guard is organized, trained and equipped as a component of the U.S. Army, individual units are under the command of individual state's governors. However, units of the National Guard can be federalized by presidential order.

A person can apply to enter the Army as an enlisted Soldier or as an Officer. You also have the choice of serving full-time Active Duty, or part time as a member of the Army National Guard or Army Reserve. There is also a program called the Simultaneous Membership Program where you train to become and officer in college ROTC while you are an enlisted member of the Army National Guard or Army Reserve.

U.S. Army – Be Informed, continued

Joining the Active Component, Army National Guard or Army Reserve starts with a recruiter or applying online. Your application process begins with an evaluation to make sure you meet the educational, mental, physical, moral, and health standards. If you are choosing to become an enlisted soldier, an Army guidance counselor will help you select a specialty. After basic training, you will attend a full-time training course that could be six months or more. You then will continue your employment as a soldier in the Active Component, Army National Guard or Army Reserve. If you choose to become an officer, you should contact either an ROTC program at a college or university and/or West Point admissions. If you qualify, ROTC programs have scholarships. Applying for West Point is a long process that should begin your junior year of high school. If accepted, West Point is tuition free.
