Dear Friends, It’s been a rough week. As many of you know, we have been praying each week in wor-ship for my step mother who has been struggling with COPD and Multiple Myeloma (bone marrow cancer). You may also know that she died on Mother’s day. So many people expressed words of condolence and comfort to me during this time. How sad to lose a mother figure on Mother’s Day. And yet, in an odd way, it was not sad at all. She was surrounded by her children and the room was filled with laughter and stories. At one point, as I sat by her bed holding her hand, she opened her eyes and looked at me. I asked what she was thinking, not expecting an answer. Too weak to speak and struggling for each breath she mouthed the words “I love you.” Early the next morning, as she slipped into unconsciousness, I had the honor of putting on my stole, anointing her with oil and offering the final prayers of the Church for her as we commended her to God. She died an hour later surrounded with love. After 23 years apart, she and my father were together again. A life well lived ended surrounded by those she loved. It was sad, and there were of course tears, but I would say it was a beautiful Mother’s Day. One I will always treasure. The veil between this world and the next is so very thin. What I mean by that is that I really do believe those we love are never all that far away. Singer Josh Groban has a song which says “A breath away’s not far to where you are.” I think that’s true. The scripture’s remind us that nothing separates us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Not life and not death, not angels nor principalities. What this means is that if I am in Christ and you are in Christ, then what separates us from each other? Nothing! So if I die and you live, I am still with Christ, as are you. What separates us from each other? Nothing, except time and space and we know those things do not bind the love of God. And so even in death, we are in Christ. We celebrate that reality when we gath-er together at the table of the Lord and receive the bread and wine of Holy Commun-ion. It is Communion…with Christ and with each other! We remember the promises of our Lord that when we eat and drink the Holy Meal, Christ is with us, and we are prom-ised that one day we will feast together with Him in the Kingdom, where we will com-mune with all those whom we love. That’s a theology we call the Communion of Saints.

It’s the bedrock of our faith. Those we love are never really that far away, and some-times, if I am just quiet and still, and my spirit is in the right space, it’s almost as if I can feel their presence. A life lived in grace and dignity, ended surrounded by love and sent forth to reunite with her maker and those she has so dearly longed to see again. A most wonderful Mother’s Day indeed. All my love for your thoughts, prayers and support,

Rob

Summer is coming…

and so is Pastor Rob's Sabbatical

We have a schedule of pastors who will be with us on

Sundays, and for emergencies, but we are also looking to

put together a team of lay people who will be willing to

visit people in the hospital and nursing homes as we have

the need. Gary Johnson has agreed to coordinate this and

be the contact person for this ministry while Pastor Rob is away. Before the

summer, we will have a time to get together to learn about how to visit people in

health care settings, i.e. praying with people, hospital visitation guidelines, etc.

If this is something that would interest you, get in touch with Pastor Rob or Gary

Johnson. Thanks!

From Pastor Rob’s Desk (cont’d)

A Pastoral Care note: Due to the current HIPAA (Privacy) laws, hospitals are not permitted to contact churches on behalf of patients. If you know of a church member who is hospitalized, please inform the church office. In the case of an emergency hospitalization (whether yourself or a family member), please call Pastor Rob at 240-217-2767.

Following is a list of members and friends of our Grace Church family who are currently ill, home-bound, recovering from an injury or surgery, or hospitalized. If you know of other folks who should be added to this list, please call the church office or speak to Pastor Rob.

Caring and Sharing

Message from Jean Barrick:

To the congregation of Grace Church – Looking for

something to do to get you “out and about,” visit a

friend who is unable to get “out and about”.

An Open Letter to Betty Linton:

Dear Betty, Several years ago, Grace Church started a “Lay Ministry” for members who

wished to visit with those unable to attend church. I was so excited when I saw your name

on the list and decided to visit with you. What a great decision that was. You haven’t

changed at all, you are just as I remembered.

When I was a teenager, way back in the late 50s and 60’s (!!), you and your husband,

Jack, were in charge of the Grace Church Youth Group. I have such fond memories of your

home; and the activities (parties) held there and the church. We were so lucky to have you

guide us through those awful teen years – setting us on the right path with your kindness

and humor.

Today, you are just as wonderful and I love our conversations. Looking forward to seeing

you soon.

Grace Groceries collected 38 items for the

Frederick FoodBank in May!

The Frederick Foodbank, operated by the Frederick Community Action Agency, is in need of non-perishable food items such as peanut butter, pastas, rice, spaghetti or tomato sauce, cereal, canned fish and canned meats.

The Frederick Soup Kitchen, also operated by the Frederick Community Action Agency, is in need of volunteers to staff the soup kitchen and serve food to homeless individuals and needy families. Volunteers are needed M-F, 5-7pm to serve prepared meals and then clean up. It is an enjoyable and rewarding volunteer activity that does not require any special skills. For more information, please contact Sarah McAleavy at 301-600-6263.

THANK YOU for your continued generous support the Frederick FoodBank!

The Grace Vine - June 2018 pg. 10 of 16

This month's readings are all over the place as we begin the longest stretch of the year: Com-mon Time. But two things stood out at me as worthy of our attention. I Samuel and Revela-tion. I Samuel is a fun book to read because it is the history of Israel. The call of David as King and all the escapades of the Davidic Kingdom, worthy of its own daytime soap opera! There is mystery and intrigue, adultery and murder. Days of our Lives "ain't got nothing" on I Samu-el! Revelation is a book that is just as fun to read if you can think of it as a book of hope ra-ther than a "scare you into Heaven" reading. Revelation is often seen as a book of prophe-sies of the end of the world and the horror than will ensue. With its 6 headed beasts and se-cret codes, Revelation has been used to keep people in line and to read the newspaper with an eye on how close the end is. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth! Modern biblical scholarship teaches that Revelation is really a book of code for the early church that lived in terrible persecution. It is a book of hope for people whose faith meant almost daily threats of torture and imprisonment. And every generation has read Revelation with an eye to how it applies to their time because every generation has had its share of persecuted peo-ple. Bottom line, we are NOT necessarily the last generation and we don;t know how any of these readings reflect ours or any other generation on earth. but what we do know is this: Whatever tribulation life may bring our way, personally or as a nation, Revelation teaches is that in the end....God wins! Thats the message for a persecuted Church: In the end...God wins. That's the message to a woman facing divorce or a family in poverty or a person facing cancer. The only thing that will ever win in the end is GOD. Enjoy!

Nursery Rocker

Some of you may remember, when you were a little child, attending the Grace Church Nursery with your Mother. (Some of you “baby boomers” will also remember that our Mothers al-ways stayed in the nursery with us.) At that time, there was a special little rocking chair in the Nursery. During the past year, unfortunately, it fell into disrepair and took a bad beating. But never fear, Sarah Drenning is here!!! Sarah has volunteered to make our “baby rocker” a real rocker once again. This picture shows our poor baby rocker. In the near future, we will be celebrating the return of our rocker to the Nurse-ry with before and AFTER photos. Jean Barrick

For All the Saints

Evelyn Underhill (June 15th )

Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) was born at Wolverhampton on December 6, 1875, the only child of (Sir) Arthur Underhill, barrister, and a bencher of Lincoln’s Inn, by his wife, Alice Lucy. She was educated at home, and later

went to King’s College for Women, London, where she read history and botany. She also became a first-class bookbinder. Evelyn Underhill began writing before she was sixteen and her first publication, A Bar-Lamb’s Ballad Book, of humorous verse concerned with the law, appeared in 1902. In 1907 she married Hubert Stuart Moore, a barrister, whom she had known since childhood. They had many interests in common in country life and country lore, and in a love of cats. She shared her husband’s interest in wood and metal work and made many of the designs which he carried out. The year of her marriage witnessed her final conversion to the Christian faith. Through her first important book, Mysticism (1911), she made the acquaintance of Baron Friedrich von Hugel to whom “under God, ” she wrote, “I owe…my whole spiritual life.” Ten years later she formally put herself under his spiritual direction and she remained his pupil until his death in 1925. From the time of her conversion Evelyn Underhill’s life consisted of various forms of religious work. She was fond of quoting St. Teresa’s saying that “to give Our Lord a perfect service Martha and Mary must combine.” Her mornings were given to writing and her afternoons to visiting the poor and to the direction of souls. During World War I (1914-1918) Evelyn Underhill worked at the Admiralty in the naval intelligence (Africa) department, but her views changed and in 1939 she found herself a Christian pacifist. She joined the Anglican Pacifist Fellowship and wrote for it an uncompromising pamphlet, The Church and War (1940). In 1913 Evelyn Underhill became an honorary fellow of King’s College of Women and in 1927 fellow of King’s College; in 1939 she received the honorary degree of D.D. from the university of Aberdeen. She had a vivid, lively personality with a keen sense of

humor and great lightness of touch. As befitted a good Incarnationalist she was inter-ested in every side of life and had a passion for efficiency in everything she undertook. In her dealings with people, and especially with her pupils, she was always a little shy, having a great hatred, as she said, of “pushing souls about.” This love of souls coupled with the determination to help them to grow at God’s pace and not at their own or hers, won her the love and trust of all who went to her for help. Underhill was a great example of a woman of faith in a predominately man’s world and her contributions to spiritual thinking and writing still influence Christians today. Evelyn Underhill died at Hampstead on June 15th, 1941. She had no children.
