The Gracious Hand of God

“The gracious hand of God” is a phrase that Ezra and Nehemiah used repeatedly to describe God’s restoration of Israel from exile. Ezra said, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him” (Ezra 8:22b). Nehemiah said, “And because the gracious hand of my God was upon me,

the king granted my requests” (Nehemiah 2:8b). These two prophets shared the amazing story of how God brought the Hebrew people back to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and the city walls.

God moved the hearts of Persian emperors and sovereignly protected the Israelites as they made the dangerous journey home. He delivered them from opponents and blessed their efforts to complete what He intended. God planned and accomplished things that they could never have imagined. Nehemiah personalized this truth when he said, “the gracious hand of my God was upon me” (emphasis added). When we look back at how God has been at work through our churches and our partnership together, the phrase of Ezra and Nehemiah about the gracious hand of God is appropriate.

In the New Testament, we learn that Jesus taught His disciples that whatever fruit they bear for Him is always because of His activity in and through them. He told them, “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). However, Jesus said that if they abide in Him then they will “bear much fruit,” bringing glory to the Father and showing themselves to be His disciples (John 15:7-8).

In this magazine, you will read some of the examples of how our DBA churches are bearing much fruit for God’s kingdom. God is orchestrating things we could have never organized. We give testimony to the gracious hand of our God.

“La Mano Benéfica de Dios” es una frase que Esdras y Nehemías usan reptidamente para describir la restauración de Israel del exilio. “La mano de nuestro Dios es para bien sobre todos los que le buscan” (Esdras 8:22b). A church plant made up almost entirely of young adults can face both youth-fueled promise and life-stage challenges. Pathway Church in Garland is stepping strongly into both.

“We have a lot of singles. Our age demographic is 20-34,” says Pastor Neb Kelile. The church’s defining characteristic? “A lot of energy!”

Relationships are at the center of life, especially for this life stage. The church offers solid guidance through sermon series like “Singleness, Dating and Marriage.” When the church began meeting less than two years ago, Neb and Hiwot, his wife, were the only married people in the congregation. Now, there are seven married couples and three babies! Neb performed four of those weddings last year. This year, Neb and Hiwot each began weekly husbands’ and wives’ groups.

Personal connection and support for all members of the church comes through weekly, geographically-based Life Groups. Creating familial settings like these for discipleship is a hallmark of effective new churches. Pathway has six groups meeting in homes scattered across the city. Three of those groups meet on college campuses. Neb has trained leaders who guide the groups through a coordinated curriculum.

Connecting quickly also helps Pathway grow and minister to those God brings. Neb visits first-time guests on the Tuesday after they visit on Sunday. Pastor Neb listens to discern their needs, and he answers questions about what it means to be a part of Pathway.

Pathway is not only young; it is international. In fact, the Ethiopian Evangelical Baptist Church (EEBC) started Pathway to help disciple younger generations. Many immigrant churches face similar challenges. Children of immigrants, though nurtured in the language and culture of their parents, quickly adjust to their new home and its way of life. They may feel disconnected as they try to live out their faith in these new settings.

Neb, Pathway and EEBC are creative and proactive in seeking to bridge those gaps. Opportunities for developing informal mentoring relationships occur as college students from Pathway lead the weekly youth activities and Bible study for EEBC. On Fridays, for example, the students meet for some serious basketball and Bible Study. After the youth go home, Neb debriefs with the college students, discovering what needs they heard from youth during the night and praying for them.

High schoolers start attending Pathway instead of EEBC at the beginning of their senior year. This give them a chance to get to know the congregation they will come home to on holidays and summers. Neb personally mentors the twelfth graders. As they discuss possible colleges to attend, he researches the campus and Christian ministries available at those schools. Then he “roadtrips” with the seniors to those colleges to introduce them to ministry leaders in the BSM, Cru, and other on-campus ministries. He explores good churches and encourages them to try them out when they start school there in the fall.

Pathway Church and Pastor Neb Kelile have a lot to share with other churches about encouraging discipleship and growth in the demographic groups where churches often lose contact: the “second-generation” of ethnic congregations and Generation Z.

When I was in the seventh grade, I went to my first Disciple Now. As a grade school kid, I had seen the teenagers at

my church go on cool trips and do fun stuff while I was just in RAs and Bible Drill. There is nothing wrong with either of those children’s programs, but as a 10- or 11- year-old, I did not consider them as fun as ski trips, mission trips to Mexico, or other activities away from my parents! Disciple Now (DNow) was the first “cool” activity I could attend, and I was HYPED UP! I anticipated staying up all night, pulling pranks, eating junk food, and doing other things that I imagined teenagers enjoyed at these events.

However, what actually happened at my first DNow changed the course of my life forever. On the last night, during small group time, I shared several questions I had about God with my leader. Why did He love me so much? Was I that bad of a person? Why did Jesus have to die? How can Jesus be fully God and fully man? I probably asked that leader 30 questions, and he answered every one of them. That night I gave my life over to God. I do not remember my leader’s name, but I remember the event like it was yesterday. Now that I am 40 years old, I can see God’s gracious hand on my life during that time.

In February 2019, DBA hosted an associational DNow at Mt. Lebanon Camp. We had 15 churches and 200 students in attendance. Church youth groups as small as 5 and as large as 30 came together to worship and experience God’s gracious hand. That weekend, several students gave their lives to Jesus, others turned back to God, and even more students made deeper connections in their student groups. Leading up to the weekend, the DBA staff prayed that God would bring 200 participants and that He would show up in a big way. God graciously did so much more. DBA plans to offer this event yearly, and our prayer is that students will continue to give their lives over to God because of the encounter they have with Him at DNow.

Cuando estaba en el séptimo grado, fuí por primera vez a Disciple Now. Como un niño en edad escolar, había visto los adolescentes en mi iglesia ir en viajes interesantes y hacer cosas divertidas mientras yo solamente estaba en programas de RA (Embajadores del Rey) y Esgrimas Bíblicos. No hay nada malo con estos programas de niños, pero como un niño de 10 o 11 años, no los consideraba

tan divertidos como los viajes de ski, viajes de misiones a México, u otras actividades lejos de mis padres! Disciple Now (DNow) fue la primera actividad “estupenda” a la cuál podia asistir, y estaba MUY EMOCIONADO! Yo anticipaba estar despierto toda la noche, hacer bromas, comer comida chatarra, y hacer otras cosas que imaginaba que los adolescentes hacían durante estos eventos.

Sin embargo, lo que realmente pasó en mi primer DNow cambió el curso de mi vida para siempre. En la última noche, durante el tiempo de grupos pequeños, compartí varias preguntas que tenía acerca de Dios con mi líder. Porqué Él me amaba tanto? Era tan mala persona? Porqué tuvo que morir Jesús? No recuerdo el nombre de mi líder, pero recuerdo el evento como si fuera ayer. Ahora que tengo 40 años, puedo ver la gracia de Dios en mi vida durante ese tiempo.

En Febrero del 2019, DBA organizó un DNow asociacional en el Campamento de Mt. Lebanon. Asistieron 15 iglesias y 200 estudiantes. Grupos de jóvenes de las iglesias variando en tamaño desde 5 hasta 30 personas se juntaron a adorar y experimentar la gracia de Dios. Ese fin de semana, varios estudiantes dieron sus vidas a Cristo, otros se volvieron a Dios, y aún más estudiantes hicieron conexiones más profundas con sus grupos. Saturate DFW is an evangelism strategy adopted by Dallas Baptist Association and resourced by Christ for All Peoples. Through this partnership, Christ for All Peoples gives DBA churches free gospel

tracts, multi-language Jesus DVDs, door-hanger bags, and maps of their neighborhoods. Each church decides which materials are distributed and the number of homes for which it will be responsible.

DBA churches that have participated in Saturate DFW so far include Northlake Baptist, Garland, Casa View Baptist, Rowlett Friendship Baptist, Duncanville First Baptist, First Baptist Hutchins, Grand View Baptist, Calvary Baptist, Oak Cliff, and Forest Meadow Baptist. These churches, collaborating with other Christian congregations, have made progress in saturating our Metroplex with the gospel.

However, there are still many opportunities for churches to be a part of this strategy. According to Brian Considine, only 25 percent of Texas neighborhoods are adopted, and most of Dallas County is still available (see map, right). Marsha Smith was a member of the fall 2018 class of Christian Women’s Job Corps at The Mount. Marsha had previously enjoyed a career at a day care as a preschool teacher, but she lost her job due to a staff reduction after 12 years of employment. She enrolled in

CWJC at The Mount because the program provides mentors, Bible study, computer classes, and work-skills training for women who want to move forward in their lives and careers.

Marsha learned about the CWJC program through a friend and noticed the Christian Women’s Job Corps sign at the church. Marsha decided she would do something about her situation instead of giving up. She was very engaged in all phases of the program. She improved her computer skills, interviewing skills, and concentrated on employer expectations. Marsha

was eager to write her resume to reflect her accomplishments and her hope for the future.

Although Marsha wanted to return to a day care position, she knew she needed a job that paid enough for her to provide for her family. She submitted her resume to Head Start of Greater Dallas and to a

home health facility. The home health facility contacted her first and scheduled an interview. During the interview, the interviewer stepped out to take a call. Just at that moment, Marsha also received a call. It was the Head Start office requesting her presence for an interview. Marsha politely declined the interview at the home health facility and accepted the interview with Head Start, a position that paid better and offered benefits. She was hired, and she immediately started her training as an infants and toddlers teacher.

We are grateful that Marsha did not give up. By attending CWJC at The Mount, she prepared for her future. By God’s gracious hand, her perseverance was rewarded.

A lighthouse is important for what it does (provides light) and where it is located. In a similar way, a neighborhood church is important because it provides gospel ministry in a community. Therefore, it is important that we work together to save strategic locations for church facilities.

In May 2016, the new pastor of Primera Iglesia Bautista Emanuel (PIBE) invited his friends and family members, who were the majority of the congregation in attendance on that particular Sunday, to join the church. He announced that there would be a business meeting that evening, and these new members would be able to vote. At the meeting, the new majority of the church

voted that the pastor would make all the decisions for the church, and that his daughter be responsible for the finances. The pastor immediately discontinued any cooperation or communication with the Southern Baptist Convention and with DBA. The church was no longer Southern Baptist, and the new majority had ownership of the building with no debt.

Small congregations can be at risk of a sudden takeover like this. The typical bylaws of churches allow a new majority to make any changes. Very quickly, a Southern Baptist Church can affiliate with another denomination. Even worse, the property could be sold and lost to the Lord’s work.

However, there is a way to prevent a takeover, and that is why the PIBE story has a different ending.

In 1984, Southwest Baptist Church (SWBC) sold the building to PIBE with a reversionary clause that stated that the property would revert to SWBC

if it ceased to operate “for Southern Baptist church purposes.” When SWBC disbanded several years later, it was a member of the Ellis Baptist Association. Therefore, the church’s rights of reversion were transferred to Ellis Baptist Association. Years later, when PIBE ceased to function as a Southern Baptist congregation, Ellis Association transferred its right of reversion to DBA. Because the reversionary clause could have been worded better, it took more than two years to establish that the reversion had been triggered. However, in January 2019, DBA was able to get ownership and possession of the property.

Today, Iglesia Bautista Oak Cliff, one of our DBA churches, owns and meets in this church building. The pastor, José Gomez, and many of their members live nearby. They are growing and reaching the community. The light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ continues to shine from this strategic location.
