The Great GatsbyReader Response #1

• Listen to the following musical selections. What images and words come to you as you listen? Write at least five sentences!

The Great Gatsby- Reader Response #2Chapter One- page 6-8:Select three descriptions involving the use of color- you don’t need to write the whole quote, just the descriptive images. Then write a minimum of five sentences interpreting the images that are created through this use of imagery and the symbolism of the colors.

“ . . . -he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have

sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing except a single

green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet

dark” (26).

Reader Response #3:*write four sentences

minimum!

How do you define the “American dream”? What is it and what does it mean to

you? What is your “American dream”?

The Great GatsbyReader Response #11

“Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light

had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had

seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close

as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His

count of enchanted objects had diminished by one” (93).

Why has the “colossal significance” of the green light at the end of

Daisy’s dock “vanished forever” once Gatsby has met Daisy again?

Can you relate to this experience of anticipation versus reality? Describe your experience.

The Great GatsbyReader Response #12

“I wouldn’t ask too much of her,” I ventured. “You can’t repeat the

past.”“Can’t repeat the past?” he asked incredulously. “Why of course you

can!” (110).

What does Gatsby want to repeat? Is it possible- why or why not? Do

you agree or disagree with Gatsby- why or why not?

The Great GatsbyReader Response #13

Compare and contrast Gatsby’s true origin story in chapter 6 (VI)-p.100 with the fictional story he told Nick in chapter 4(IV)-p.65 . Why do you think Gatsby felt it necessary to fabricate a story

about where he came from originally? Does your opinion of Gatsby change- why or why not?

think Daisy SHOULD decide to do?
