“If your contribution has been vital there will always be somebody to pick up where you left off, and that will

be your claim to immortality." --Walter Gropius, German architect

EDITORIAL WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ARCHITECT? – Sheldon Wolfe, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, writes: “Today, no one expects a single person to know all about construction, but a semblance of a master builder can be found in the collective knowledge of an architectural firm and its consultants. However, because of the lasting impact of the design-bid-build process, there remains a schism between the design and construction activities of architecture. Which, of course, means that an architect, in the original meaning of the word, no longer exists, or at least is rare?” Read this blog

ASK THE EXPERT – "How does the current USGBC’s approval by only allowing FSC in their LEED program effect meeting any of the certifications (i.e. bronze, silver, etc.)?"

EXPERT’S ANSWER: USGBC only allowing FSC certified materials and products to assist with their Certified Wood credit leaves many wood based materials unable to qualify for LEED points. These materials are sourced from forests certified under other sustainable forest certification programs, such as Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the American Tree Farm System (ATFS), and are readily available with proven performance qualities. The Certified Wood credit is voluntary within the LEED Building Guidelines, worth 1 point toward certification. This means all LEED certification levels can be achieved without meeting the credit requirements, as 100 points are available and achieving 40-80 points will qualify a building for certification under the LEED for New Construction guidelines. While certification can be achieved without the Certified Wood credit, in recent years USGBC has been criticized for not including other sustainable forest certification programs from government officials and wood industry organizations. This has led LEED to lose favor in some jurisdictions. Most recently, Georgia no longer requires state-funded projects to meet LEED standards in favor of other green building programs that accept SFI, ATFS, and FSC certifications equally. ACCELERATORS AND RETARDERS FOR PORTLAND CEMENT-BASED PLASTERS G. Michael Starks CGC, CDT, CCPR, LEED AP, Specifications Representative Admixtures for the acceleration or retardation of stucco set and curing times should only be used after laboratory testing under conditions that closely approximate the jobsite conditions for the time and location of the project. In general, it is not a good practice to modify the cement for convenience or without a specific need. However, there are times and conditions that may require some sort of modification. Accelerators: The winter months, in particular, can create a need for the acceleration of the initial set time of the plaster. Accelerators can shorten the period between rodding and floating or finish texturing. The most common accelerator used in concrete construction is Calcium chloride. It has the added benefit of increasing the rate of strength development. Unfortunately, Calcium chloride increases the rate of degradation of even galvanized steel reinforcement such as lath, joints and beads. If necessary to shorten the initial set period, try adding some Type 111 Portland Cement to your mix as outlined in Table 3 of ASTM C 926. Type 111 Portland is specifically ground to achieve high-early strengths. It is used primarily for pre- cast products to enable the producer to remove his forms as soon as possible. This characteristic can work to your advantage in situations that may arise that would require acceleration. As you can see from the table, you may use 1 part (by volume) of Plastic Cement (Titan Stucco Cement meets this classification) and 1 part of Portland Cement with the appropriate volume of sand for the 1st coat (2¼-4 parts) and 2nd coat (3-5 parts) to achieve an approved stucco mortar. Mix times remain 3-5 minutes after the addition of the last ingredients. You may not accelerate finish coat plasters. While the Standard does not prohibit the addition of Portland Cement to either Type S or M Masonry Cements, it does specifically state that it is not required. Another way to accelerate your mix is to heat the water and/or sand. We’ve all seen the result of using hot water from a black hose in August in Florida. Even warm water will increase to rate of the rise of the heat of hydration, the chemical process that causes cement to harden. You must have control of the water temperature and you should always run a test batch before plaster application. Retarders: Retarders for plaster should be avoided. While they slow the hydration process, they do not insure the retention of the mix water. Therefore, you may slow down your initial set but still wind up with an only partially hydrated mix that result in low strengths or even dusting. Retarders cannot alter weather conditions such as high temperature, wind or low humidity, all of which greatly affect plaster performance.

SPECKS? – John O’Neil, CSI, CCS, CCCA, writes: “In architecture, engineering, and construction, ‘spec’ is a slangy, informal word that is completely understandable in spoken language, but sometimes muddles meaning when used into business writing. In a construction project context such as a meeting or a phone call, it’s easily understood when you say ‘I’ll spec a coiling steel door,’ or ‘Include an allowance for face brick in the spec.’ In the first case, it’s clear that spec means specify. In the second case, it’s clear that spec means specifications. But things get clumsy when you try to use ‘spec,’ and variations of it, in writing.” Read this blog.

new members – welcome, to the most dynamic CSI Chapter in the Southeast Region

Barbara Sample, CSI, joined both the G O and Jacksonville Chapters in July and is currently

the Northern Florida Sales Representative for The Euclid Chemical Company, of which she “just

celebrated my 15th

year with them on September 2nd

.” She joined both chapters because they

encompass her territory and is currently studying for “my CDT exam, which will assist me in my

current position and give me a chance to meet local A/Es and consultants.”

Barb recently relocated from the east side of Cleveland, OH to the St Augustine area on March

26th of this year. She said she could have lived anywhere in central or northern Florida but “chose St Augustine

as I had friends from Ohio move here 7 years ago.” She actually lives in Vilano Beach, which is centrally

located for her territory with her cat ‘Chase’. There are two children in Ohio, “26 year old daughter who is

married with two wonderful children, my grandsons Espen, 3 and Colt 1, and a 23 year old son who an EMT

and an Air Force Reservist.”

While in Ohio, when she wasn’t working, she boated on the waters of Lake Erie in her a 41’ Apache go-fast

boat. She still does boating here in Florida “but on fishing boats and not as fast as I’m use to.” Golf was also a

past time and she said she ”will be picking that sport back up as I have a new set of golf clubs that cannot wait

to be used.” Perhaps she and Donna Moore will get together some Saturday when Randy is off fishing. She

seems to be enjoying the Florida weather and is looking forward to no longer being associated with the snow.

Barb went on to say, “I will support CSI in many ways in committee participation, programs suggestions, etc.

I look forward to meeting several new colleagues and getting to know the Florida market as I do.”

[email protected] The Institute held an intense three day Leadership Training for the incoming Region Presidents and Region Membership Chairs at the June Board Meeting in Denver. The theme of the long weekend was “I will.” The focus was on what CAN I DO to make CSI better. Each participant was required to come up with four “I will” statements. One for each of the four Value Statements in CSI’s Strategic Plan - Membership, Standards and Formats (Technical), Education, and Practice Tools. Emphasis is on Membership Recruitment as a primary goal of every Chapter. An equal goal is Membership Retention. As Chapters, you need to keep the Members you recruit, plus, you need to keep your long standing Members; keep them active. Membership Value will be a theme this year.

The Institute has dissolved the Community Development Committee, but the goals of that Committee was picked up by a new Staff Department at Institute. The main goal is to facilitate communication from Institute to Region, Region to Chapter, Chapter to Region, and Region to Institute.

BULLETINS – RELATING ASCE/SEI 7-10 DESIGN WIND LOADS TO FENESTRATION PRODUCT RATINGS – The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) have published the 2010 edition of ASCE/SEI 7, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. This updated standard is approved for reference in the 2012 International Codes and in the 2010 Florida Building Code, replacing the text taken from the previous edition, ASCE/SEI 7‐05.

This bulletin is intended to inform building specifiers and other interested users: 1. That the 2010 version of ASCE/SEI 7 cannot be intermixed with earlier versions, 2. That exterior fenestration products (windows, doors and skylights) do not need to be tested differently as a result of the new 2010 version of ASCE/SEI 7, and 3. How the design loads from the new 2010 edition of ASCE/SEI 7 relate to exterior fenestration (windows, doors and skylights) product ratings and performance grades. .

This bulletin is not intended to highlight all the changes from version 2005 to 2010 of ASCE/SEI 7, such as those related changes where opening protection in windborne debris regions is required. Please review ASCE/SEI 7‐10 in its entirety for full details.

WHAT IS HAPPENING ON YOUR PROJECTS! For years, CSI chapters utilize manufacturer’s product CEU programs as the education sessions for meetings. As Director: Environment & Sustainability at Kingspan Insulated Metal Panels, or for any manufacturer’s product consultant, we want to know about the projects the design professionals are working on and the related challenges in the delivery process. Help us understand the design goals and intent including the aesthetics, energy efficiency requirements, environmental & sustainable goals, budget limitations, of your projects – new or retrofit. In addition,

To better understand how your specification master systems are maintained and updated. (This varies from firm to firm.)

Are you using MasterFormat 50 Divisions? How substitutions are reviewed and how “equivalents” are considered.

Manufacturers are subject matter experts that can help deliver your design intent and in many cases can offer design assistance upfront to avoid later issues.

How to become a resource to your team as opposed to a product manufacturer’s rep. To then understand what happens when the contractor takes over and implements value engineering. Who has the control on all of the phases prior to construction?

It seems Contractors are making more decisions because they are assuming more risk. How does that impact project specification and materials? How is risk assessed on your projects to that end? How are project specifications incorporated with BIM/REVIT produced project models? How are the owner contracts being written regarding all these issues?

o Are owners really aware of the importance of CSI 3 Part specifications as related to risk reduction and liability?

How can manufacturers play a role in addressing these issues as related to assisting the rest of the building team?

Finally, the reality at the construction site regarding sealant specifications and project requirements such as reporting of LEED documentation on things like product VOCs emissions, is not on the installers radar screen. It simply boils down to budget and application. What happens to material selection when the price for material and labor becomes the focus over performance? Why are water tests often done after sealants are already applied when it is too late? The principles of CSI specifications are addressed in the CDT course yet, there is a “Grand Canyon” between these CSI principles and reality. My challenge to you as members of Greater Orlando CSI, is to help the chapter develop programs from you, the design professionals, owners and contractors, on topics that are your heartburn. Then, let the chapter respond with solutions that benefit all members. Perhaps we can all work together to build simple practice tools to make our projects more successful and address specific issues of concern. If any of these issues are near to your heart, then please let Jim Carten, the Chapter Program Committee Chair, know about them. Perhaps more of you can discuss these issues at our monthly meetings. You can also contact me directly – [email protected] What say you?

BULLETINS – CSI’s COMPLIANT DOCUMENT REVIEW PROGRAM – establishes that the product guide specifications bearing the

Compliant Document Review Program logo are presented professionally and formatted in a standard and accepted fashion, lightening the workload for busy designers. Only guide specifications that adhere to the principles set forth in CSI’s published formats, best practices and guidelines obtain this stamp of approval. Our reviewers will determine if your guide specifications are organized and structured correctly, and if they properly apply CSI’s standards and formats. If they do, you’ll be able to add the Compliant Document

Review Program logo to your guide specifications, and show designers that the information you are offering them will save time and effort. The following companies have had documents approved through the program: Kingspan, Sto, Napco, and Southwest Progressive Enterprises. Questions? Email [email protected], and learn more
