We are finally SENIORS at LHS! There may be some questions about what we need to do to prepare our-selves for our last high school year. Since the first day of freshman year, we thought we had a long road ahead of us. With our last year of high school on hand, overwhelming thoughts may be entering your head. Do not fret. We are here to provide you with the secrets to having a successful senior year. First things first. You will need to consider the financial aspect of the upcoming year. Senior fees are due at registration. This money will go to the graduation ceremony, senior picnic, t-shirt, senior awards program, and other senior activities. You also have to keep the $200-300 Herff Jones graduation package in mind. This includes graduation an-nouncements, cap and gown, etc. You’re going to want to have the year-book from senior year, so that’s an-other $55. And who could miss out on senior prom? Ticket prices and dress/tux money should be acknowledged. Graduate Chace Pearson advised, “Enjoy every minute, because it goes by so fast.” Alex Shorter reminded us to “Treat the teachers right, because you’re go-ing to need recommendations.” Don’t panic, this is just another new beginning!

Things Graduates Need to Remember

By Laurie Rappeport

Education

Look for ways to continue your educa-tion wherever you find yourself. Learn from your mistakes View a failure as an opportunity to learn from your mistake. Put failures behind you and move forward. Excel Push yourself to excel by surrounding yourself with people who challenge you. Put yourself in situations that force you to exert yourself to succeed. Mentor Find a mentor. A mentor can guide you, help you find new perspectives on issues and events, and open doors for you. Perseverance Persevere in pursuing your goals. Many people give up too early and never experience the challenge of pushing though difficulties to reach the finish line. Get to the finish line.

By Maggie Shannon and The Leeds Herald

The Leeds High School Quill and Scroll International Honorary Soci-ety for High School Journalists Chapter honors the contributions made to our school and to the State of Alabama by the amazing Marie Cro-mer. A born journalist, Marie always found room in her loving heart for students, the community, and the state. As a student at LHS, Marie’s interest in news reporting began to blos-som. She was instrumental in securing the Charter for the LHS Chap-ter of the Quill & Scroll honor society in 1947 and served as Editor-in-Chief. Her first news articles were pounded out on manual typewriters and copied on rickety, purple ink mimeograph machines! How proud she was to distribute the first newspapers, The Greenwave, produced by Leeds High School. She contributed school news to The Leeds News Publisher/Editor Edmund Blair for city and community news distribu-tion. Her love of journalism led her through a lifelong career of writing. While studying at Jacksonville State College (University), Marie served as front-page editor of the college newspaper and was on the staff of the college yearbook — in addition to working part-time in the advertising/layout department of The Gadsden Times. During her stay in New Orleans, LA and Gulfport, MS, she worked as a freelance writer and contributor to The Gulfport Herald and The Times Picayune. Marie was a news correspondent for The Birmingham Post-Herald and later for The Birmingham News. She was the Life Style Editor for the St. Clair News-Aegis and Education Editor for the Talladega Daily Home. Marie also worked as a freelance writer for a number of state and national publications. Marie Cromer never “officially retired” — she continued writing for The Leeds News and the Leeds Daily Herald, our local online maga-zine. Her book, Modern Indians of Alabama: Remnants of the Removal, won the non-fiction book category of the National Federation of Press Women award presentations. This book and her published research of Alabama’s Indian tribes garnered attention by the state’s Indian Af-fairs Commission. She was subsequently “adopted” into the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama and given the Indian name, “Talking Leaves” — the Sequoyas’ descriptive words for “the white man’s printed pages”. Marie’s adoption into the Tribe was the first in the state since the Indian Removal on the Trail of Tears in the 1830s. Marie was a playwright as well. Her play, Listen to that Cold Steel Ring, honoring the legendary railroad tunnels in the Dunavant com-munity, was presented for five consecutive years at the Leeds Down-town Folk Festival. Marie organized the Leeds Historical Society in 1998 and led the group in numerous projects — many funded by grants she secured: Historic Stagecoach Route through Leeds, restoration of the historic Rowan House, state historical markers honoring Leeds Depot and rail-road steel-driving icon John Henry, renovation of The Wright Com-munity Center, and monument in Leeds Memorial Park honoring Leeds’ three Medal of Honor recipients. Her commitment to community earned her recognition by the Leeds Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee and Marie was twice nominated by the community for the Leeds Chamber of Com-merce for Citizen of the Year. Eight years ago, Marie returned to the scene of her alma mater and “declared” that The GreenWave News was back in business. She spent countless hours at LHS over the course of those years guiding students (and this sponsor) in the revival of our school newspaper. (I can hear Marie correcting me right now regarding the use of her first name throughout this article — “Maggie Shannon, you know you are only to use the last name in subsequent references to an individual in a news article!” — but she will always be Marie, my friend and mentor, and I simply could not type last name Cromer in mention of this great lady!)

Remember when... Remember when Brandon McDaniel wore his light blue Easter Basket Suit in November? Remember when Nick Marbury carted a gallon of lotion around with himself throughout freshman year? Remember when Abbie Ellison put on her seatbelt in her desk in Ms. Shannon’s class? Remember when Deandric Tho-mas (aka Oh Great One) was absent one Thursday because he was trying to bring peace to the Middle East, then absent on Friday because he was trying to solve World Hunger, and, again on Saturday because he was getting help from God on his 3-point shot? Remember when Earl Webster’s little friend, Jimmy Russell, was kidnapped? Remember when Lewis Edwards got mad at Starr and drove off for school leaving her to look for a flag that belonged to Mr. Wise? R e m e m b e r w h e n A s h l e y Blackmon said, “Man, I love ba-nanas. I really want that banana on my sandwich”? Remember when “someone’s” car caught on fire in the parking lot? Remember when Coach Carlisle gave out that nasty hand sanitizer in the hallway? Remember when Luke Kantola and Earl Webster snorted sour skittles through a dollar bill and were in pain for the next two hours? Remember when Tyler King and Dakota Creel got into a wreck in the parking lot after school? Remember when Jonas Webb “remembered” he was 20? Remember when Ja’Larria Wil-liams flipped Nathan Vickers upside down in his desk? Remember when Coach Carlisle made Abbie Ellison cry every sin-gle day in 9th grade history? Remember when the police “turned off” Mike Chattman’s “Turnt Up”? Remember when Nate Franklin only wore the color purple for an entire year and got into a fight over a cafeteria roll? Remember when Reagan Adair shaved his head? Remember when one of the drug dogs had to “potty” in the hallway?

Remember when we had to practice Intruder Drills in Ms. Shannon’s class by sitting on the counter while she hid behind the closet door with a baseball bat to protect us? Remember when Megan Phillips threw up on the Army truck? Remember when Jamie Finch and Cassidy DeShazo fell asleep in the library and Ms. Shannon left them in their for over 30 minutes? They had good naps but got zeros for the class assignment. Remember when Andre Porter got fired on his day off? Remember when Frank Bernklau forgot to wear his boots? He actually wore tennis shoes on March 15, 2013 — last day before Spring Break! Remember when Katie Wilkin-son nicknamed Deijon Smith her “Honey Mustard”? Remember when Alexandria Shorter told Nick Marbury to “Shut down and sit up!”? Remember when we were sopho-mores and only three people were on A/B Honor Roll? Remember when Savannah Payne had a car accident BEFORE she even had her driver’s license? Remember when we were scared of Mr. Turner because he paddled kids in middle school in the cafete-ria? Remember when Mr. Windham wore a coconut bra in a school pro-gram? Remember when LHS won the state championship 2 times in 3 years? Remember when ‘Ant’ McMillan was proud of his ASVAB score?

Goodbye Gifts By Mikal Williams

On April 23, 2013, Abbie Ellison sent her class off with personalized goodbye gifts. Ellison, class president all four years of high school, saved money throughout the year to purchase mementos for individual goodie bags for each senior. The goodie bags were crafted to fit the personality of each graduating senior. Each goodie bag included a class wristband, a specialized card, “Roll Greenwave” chocolates, candy, specialty trinkets, and a raffle ticket for a chance to win grand “Senior Trip” prizes — one prize for a boy and one prize for a girl. In addition to extra candy and other treats, sun-screen and sunglasses completed the giant grand prize goodie bags for the all-important summer vacation sea-son. Ellison stated, “I felt like my class-mates deserved a little something special to mark our four-year jour-ney through high school together.” Ellison’s gifts were her way of wish-ing fellow students great achieve-ments and success.

Senior Picnic Fun

The Senior Class of 2013 enjoyed a day of fun at the park on May 15th. In addition to the Chick-fil-A picnic lunch, the group enjoyed activities and games — with a big emphasis on “water battles”! Sponsors Walker and Shannon an-nounced the 10th Annual Llama Awards accompanied by laughter from the seniors as embarrassing moments were remembered.

Advice to 2013 Graduates from

Counselor Lisa Hudson LHS Administration and Faculty

Desiderata By Max Ehrmann Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

DESIDERATA (latin for "desired things")
