Judith
I was having a coffee the other day with a friend in
Haslemere, (well, ok, a coffee and a delicious cake) when I
remembered I needed to buy a birthday present. Too late
for the internet. Luckily a wander around the shops and I
found a perfect gift that’s just right. How fortunate I am
that Haslemere still has a good selection of independent
shops for us all to enjoy, whether for a planned shop or for
that impulse buy.
You may have read in the papers recently about residents
of Sherborne in Dorset protesting against plans for a certain
supermarket to be built just outside the town. Shops
closed during the protest as a sign of support and the vast
majority of people in the town are not in favour of this
development as they can see it would damage the
character and prosperity of the town. As in so many other
places this is a David versus Goliath battle and I wish them
success.
However, we all have our part to play in keeping our town
centres lively and interesting. For starters, we are all
responsible for where we shop. I know I am not alone in
being guilty of internet shopping and buying groceries at an
out-of-town supermarket. Very convenient, but then if my
town centre begins to die, I am of course partly to blame
for its demise .
What will we do when the only thing in our precious town
centres is an “eating experience”? What will distinguish a
town in Surrey from a town in Yorkshire? If there are only
chains of the same coffee shops or restaurants and
enormous out-of-town supermarkets for our groceries, our
town centres will die. Impulse buys will become a thing of
the past—no longer possible because there will be no shops
left. Don’t let it happen. Support your local shops.

Now I’ll be the first to admit I
don’t know a lot about horses
other than, I know which end
bites and which end kicks!
However, Annelies Klinker,
one of our physiotherapists at
Healthflex Haslemere has
been working with both
horses and their riders for
many years. She co-runs a
veterinary, physiotherapy
business where she looks
after both horses and their
riders’ with their musculo-
skeletal requirements.
As well as injury management, she is
keen to stress with the riders the
importance of how improving your
riding posture, general strength, core
stability and fitness can not only
enhance your performance but also
reduce the chances of injury, to both
the rider and the horse.
She is happy to assess riders of all
abilities and give them a specific
exercise program to improve their
balance, sitting posture and core
strength which will help them get the
most out of their riding.
If you would like to have an
appointment with Annelies or would

services we provide at Healthflex,

Fitness Tip for April Set yourself up to succeed!
www.fitzbiztraining.co.uk
We’ve all decided “this time will be
different” and started a health kick saying
you’ll get up at 5am to go to the gym and
you’ll never touch a chocolate chip cookie
ever again… But if it didn’t work before,
why will it work now?
Make it easy for yourself - set yourself up
to succeed - if you have 20 minutes to kill
before picking the kids up most days, but
by that time you’re too tired to do a
“proper workout”, how about you commit
yourself to, say, going for a 5 minute walk
in that time. Make it REALLY easy. Make
yourself feel like you’re succeeding, then
you can build on it. Sneak in the good
habits (both exercise and nutrition) up on
yourself slowly - they’re much more likely
to stick that way!

paving products on the
market it can be difficult to
select the right one for your
requirements. Whether it’s
Indian Sandstone, York
stone, Marshalls products,
Bradstone products, or the
vast array of others on
display in your local garden
centre, knowing which type
works best can be
daunting!
Transform Landscapes has
been building gardens in
the local area for 25 years
and has gained extensive
practical experience in this area. We offer a
comprehensive consultation and design
service to overcome these hurdles and are
best placed to advise you on the right style
and colour to suit your
property and purpose. For
example, one of the aspects
to consider when having
paving laid is the style and
method of jointing to use in
your terrace. ‘Bird Beak’, or
‘Double Weathered’, are the
more traditional types and
used commonly with York
stone paving products or to
suit the style of a period
property, whereas the ‘Half
Moon’ style is used more
with other products like
Indian Sandstone. As the
ranges of paving increase and develop so
does our ability to supply and lay them to a
very high standard.

Paving Stones to consider
Indian Sandstone – This is by
far the most popular choice to
date because of its range of
colours and laying patterns.
Available in greys, greens,
yellows, oranges, through to
reds, the choice is vast. Indian
Sandstone also comes in many
sizes and laying patterns,
giving a wide range of design
ideas and considerations.
York Stone – Perfect for a
more period setting providing
a somewhat gentler look with
a hint of drama and elegance
to complement the landscape.
Marshalls – this company offer a wide
range of paving products from tradition
style paving for terraces to block paving for
driveways. We have been part
of the Marshalls register now
for three years and have used
their products extensively. In
2012 we won the category for
Best Engineering Achievement

The Benefits of Hypnotherapy
For those of us who blush, we know that
just by thinking about an embarrassing
situation our skin can colour up. In fact,
every thought we have results in a
corresponding experience of some sort in
our body. Often this is a feeling: feeling
good when we remember a good
experience and feeling bad when we
think of a bad one.
Sometimes our bodies ‘act out’ our
thoughts in ways we cannot admit to
ourselves. It might be the business
person dreading an upcoming speaking
engagement who finds that a sore throat
develops the day before, so the speech
has to be abandoned. It might be an IBS
sufferer whose symptoms get worse
when they are stressed - when they
“cannot stomach” something.
Jane came to me because she couldn’t
swallow. She had been told that things
had got so bad that the only solution was
to have her oesophagus surgically
removed. Clearly she wanted to avoid
that if possible. As we chatted about her
life it transpired that in both her home
life and at work she had for many years
been in a position where she was
constantly having to take extreme and
unfair criticism. Yet in neither situation
did she feel in a position to answer back.
She just had to “swallow” it. And now it
seemed that her body was saying to her
“we can’t swallow this anymore”.
This made sense to Jane and once she
realised that her life experience was
being reflected in her body, she began to
turn things around. Hypnotherapy
helped her tap into her inner resources
of self esteem allowing her to be more
assertive and feel more in control and
she began to develop better coping
mechanisms. She was then able to
retrain her body to swallow. Now three
years later, having been without
symptoms for quite some time, her
surgeon is very pleased with her progress
and has signed her off.

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT EATING DISORDERS – WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR.
Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia are written and spoken about more readily these days, nevertheless I still
believe that either label carries major worry for everyone and often makes it difficult to address openly.
Working in an NHS Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team in Guildford, I was a senior
member of the Specialist Eating Disorder Clinic run by Dr Irene Yi, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and
worked with young people and their families who battled to understand and overcome this complicated
set of diagnoses. Treatment for either Anorexia or Bulimia may seem like one step forward and two steps
back, it takes months, sometimes years to recover fully, - and families wonder if their lives will ever
become “normal” again.
I believe preventative work is always more useful than waiting until the illness becomes severe, -
requiring either specialist in-patient treatment or an NHS Outpatient Eating Disorder Team.
So what are the signs to look out for? It may seem obvious, but so many young people start out just
wanting to lose weight by adhering to a diet programme such that parents who see their daughters/sons
every day may easily miss the early signs of the illness beginning to take over their lives. There is no
question that most young people will never develop anorexia/bulimia, no matter how many diets they go
on or how much their weight may vary week by week. It is not in their psychological make-up. There can
generally be a genetic disposition towards triggering an eating disorder.
Bulimia is trickier to notice as the young person’s weight may not vary that much. Food disappearing
regularly and mysteriously from kitchen cupboards is a good signal which may indicate binge/vomiting
behaviour. It’s confusing isn’t it, as food disappearance is a regular occurrence when adolescent boys are
anywhere near, but I’m sure you get my point. If your son/daughter always leaves the table after eating
and disappears for periods of time to the bathroom then that’s another indicator. Food and the mention
of it becomes a touchy subject. You may notice dried vomit around the bathroom and bedroom area, or
the stale smell of it around your home.
Anorexic behaviour can be spotted by your son/daughter always telling you they are eating elsewhere at
different times in different houses, rather than sharing family meals. I realise that the way we lead our
lives can mask this as most families come and go, having different commitments at different times. If you
notice all fat and sugar being gradually removed from their diet, miniscule portions, obsession with food
labels (theirs not yours), wearing layers of baggy clothing, preoccupation with weight and weighing
themselves, becoming more and more sensitive whenever food is mentioned, or sudden onset of
incessant exercising then it may be worth checking with their friends whether lunch at school is being
eaten or avoided on a daily basis.
Secretive and preoccupied behaviour is a common feature of both diagnoses.
One Step does lots of preventative work with young people and their families and also works with young
people who have been discharged from specialist Eating Disorder Teams.

“Clients of Shaws Wills and Trusts”
If you already have a Will, how old is it?
Has the family changed?
If so, your Will may not do the job you
intended.
Perhaps you do not have a Will?
Without a Will:
• An unmarried partner has no inheritance
rights.
• A married spouse may not inherit enough to
live comfortably because children do have
inheritance rights.
• Orphaned children under 18 become the
responsibility of the Local Authority.
• Children inherit equally. This may or may
not be fair.
• Children inherit at 18. Not always the best
age.
• An heir who is in receipt of State benefits
my lose benefits which depend on capital
assessment when they inherit.
• You could be leaving problems and disputes
instead of happy memories.
Our Wills can avoid all these problems. That
is pretty good for a single document!
Making a Will with Shaws Wills involves:
• An informal discussion about your family
and your wishes.
• Advice as to the best way to safe-guard
your assets for your heirs in the most tax
efficient manner.
• Advice concerning Care in old age and how
assets can be preserved for the family.
• We believe in plain English.

With fifty years of experience in the serious
health spa business, 2013 has seen
Grayshott launch its most exciting and
profound regime to date: The Grayshott
Programme. Developed by Elaine Williams,
Director of Natural Therapies and widely
recognised as a leader in her field, and
Stephanie Moore, Grayshott’s Clinical
Nutritionist, The Grayshott Programme
works on naturopathic principles underlined
by the premise that optimum health must go
hand in hand with a healthy fully functioning
digestive system.
Elaine Williams explains “I have wanted to
develop such a programme for some time as
I feel there is an urgent need for this type of
restoration diet in the UK. At the moment,
many of my clients feel they need to go
abroad to undertake serious treatments that
target the digestive system. With the use of
a scientifically backed dietary protocol,
specific eating practices and specialist thera-
peutic treatments, we are tackling health
from the inside out”.
The Grayshott Programme is a strict and
precise programme and a seven day
minimum commitment is required. Initial
feedback has been wholly positive. Mother
of four, Ali Boylan who took part on the test
programme said “I feel the best I have felt in
ten years. My energy levels have soared but
most importantly, I am taking home a very
workable and sensible approach to eating
and cooking that I believe will improve not
just my health but that of the whole family”.
The seven day Grayshott Programme
includes:
• Personal health consultations
• One-to-one consultations with a medical
herbalist and a nutritional therapist
• An eating protocol that will heal and
regenerate your body, (including two semi
fast days)
• Abdominal massages, hydro baths and liver
compresses to support the detoxification
processes
• Monitoring and support, physically and
emotionally by specialists throughout the
programme
• Gentle exercise, Tai Chi, relaxation and
breathing classes
• An educational lecture programme to
explain the protocol and plan for on-going
maintenance
• Post departure support
Prices start from £1295 (per person, single
occupancy) during low season including the
following : Consultations, monitoring and
support, lectures, meals, herbal tinctures,
therapeutic treatments, gentle exercise
programme, accommodation. The
programme runs weekly Weds—Weds.

Research has revealed the real love/hate relationship that our nation has with cleaning. Over a
quarter (27%) of us admit to feeling under pressure to be seen as clean and tidy while 37% of us
say we can’t relax if our house is messy.
Cara Heather, MOLLY MAID Franchise owner (Ash Vale & Haslemere) says “People work longer
hours and have less time on their hands to do the daily chores yet other are no less forgiving
when it comes to judging the state of your home. Being seen as house-proud is a really important
quality to have and even if someone has a fantastic career, an amazing personality or a nice smile,
a dirty house is a massive no-no! Sometimes it’s good to get a helping hand from professional
cleaners so you can come home to a lovely clean and comfortable house.”
Here at MOLLY MAID (Ash Vale and Haslemere), Cara and her team are dedicated to helping you
clear out, clean up and start afresh this Spring. At Molly Maid we can take that stress and
pressure out of your life by fulfilling all of your cleaning requirements thus giving you the quality
time you deserve thereby allowing you to do all those other things you always intended to get
around to.
We are a reputable, local and international business who are highly professional, totally honest
and who offer the best value for money cleaning service whereby your privacy is assured. This is
further enhanced by our rigorous cleaner selection process.
So go ahead, contact Cara and her team on 0845 838 0492, the spring cleaning experts,
or alternatively, give someone you know a MOLLY MAID gift voucher and start their
spring off beautifully!
