AFRAID TO COMMIT? WE’VE GOT THE CURE FOR YOU It’s never easy to say “yes” when one thinks of all the commitments already in our planners. Isn’t it amazing how easy it is to commit to dinner out with friends or a family event at the gym? Quite honestly, full participation at church is more than the Eucharist: it’s living the life with fellow parishioners. Here at Queen of Angels there are a wide variety of opportunities to cure “Commitment Fever,” the aversion to saying yes to matters of consequence.

We all see the requests from SPRED for adult catechists to step to the plate and make it possible for someone with physical, emotional or spiritual disabilities to share in the small faith life of a parish community. It requires 26 weeks of commitment, gives you the summer off and provides you with a great source of spiritual nourishment.

Yes, it’s great to make Sunday mornings your own but wouldn’t it be great to guide young people toward a personal relationship with Jesus? Teaching CCD can make that happen. Share your faith, prepare a lesson plan and greet those smiling faces to pray, laugh, teach and share. Several classes are in need of additional adult leaders for next school year. Classes are September through early May. Or consider being a Confirmation catechist from September through late January. Guide the discussion with a small group of middle school and high school students and share your faith. Make it a memorable growth and learning experience for all, including yourself.

The Society of St. Vincent dePaul meets the needs of the poor, one individual or family at a time. This grace-filled ministry meets once a month and provides resources, assistance and the occasional dollar to help people maintain or re-establish self-sufficiency. Join this group and you’ll be living the Beatitudes up close and personal.

Lectors and Ministers of Communion share the Word and Eucharist at Mass. It really doesn’t get any better than this. You perform your chosen function at the Mass you regularly attend, bringing the Scriptures and sharing Jesus with your fellow worshippers. It is a most prayerful experience.

The desire to avoid a commitment can often result in a bruised conscience and a reluctance to be part of a group. Even if you are a committed to the school, its events and fundraisers, don’t miss the chance for participating in the life of the broader parish. To embrace a commitment that does not directly benefit oneself or family members is an experience that teaches our children (and ourselves) to look at life beyond our personal sphere. Queen of Angels is ready to help you say “yes” and make a commitment that will make a world of difference. To volunteer, call the parish office at 773-539-7510.

I, the Lord, am your God… You shall not have other gods beside me. — Exodus 20:2a, 3

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT dePAUL REFLECTS: In today’s Gospel Jesus is asked, “What sign can you show us?” Every day we can see signs of how God has visited us in the blessings of our lives. Let us be a sign of God’s love by being a blessing to others. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Parish Center and leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent dePaul so that together we can be a sign of God’s love to the suffering and poor.

LENTEN FISH FRY AT ST. ANDREW St. Andrew Parish, Addison and Paulina, has joined with New England Seafood Company for the annual Lenten Friday Night Fish Fry from 5 to 8 p.m. March 27. The BYOB event features a fish basket for $12 and a mac and cheese basket for $7. Supply is limited so make your reservation today. Dinners can be ordered at www.saintandrewchicago.org.

ECOLOGY AND THE CHURCH In anticipation of Pope Francis’ forthcoming encyclical on the environment, World Catholicism Week at DePaul University will feature Fragile World: Ecology and the Church April 8-12. Celia Deane-Drummond, Christopher Hamlin, Michael Northcott, Michael Perry and Brayton Shanley will be the presenters. For more information, call 773-325-4158.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING EVENT Queen of Angels is sponsoring a school and parish Electronics Recycling Event next Sunday, March 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We are working with Vintage Tech to provide a secure and responsible mechanism for disposing of computer equipment and other electronics rather than sending them to a landfill. Drive up and drop off your electronics at the rear entrance of the church on Claremont where volunteers will be ready and waiting. Hard drives will be fully erased before disposal. Acceptable items include computers/laptops, monitors and peripherals; cell phones; mp3/iPods/PDAs; household electronics such as remotes, toasters, hair dryers, etc. Please note that old fashioned tube TVs and monitors can be recycled, but at a cost given the materials they contain. We are asking for a 35 cent per pound donation to offset this cost (a typical computer monitor would be $10, a TV could be much more). For a complete list of acceptable items which can be recycled, please check the website of Vintage Tech at vintagetechrecyclers.com/why-recycle-consumer/. Contact Todd Woelfl at [email protected] for more information.

LENTEN FOOD DRIVE In the spirit of Lenten sacrifice, please consider a donation to the St. Vincent dePaul Lenten Food Drive. Donations will be gratefully accepted in the gathering space through Saturday, March 21. The people we serve are especially grateful to receive: dried beans rice sanitary napkins dish liquid diapers canned tuna detergent cooking oil canned fruit toothpaste sugar breakfast cereals dried fruit pasta canned tomatoes We welcome checks and cash donations in the Poor Box that will be used for the wholesale purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables and toward grocery store certificates that can be used for fresh foods to improve the nutrition of the adults and children we serve. The Poor Box is located at the top of the main church stairwell, near the flags. Volunteers are needed to help sort and distribute donated items from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Sunday, March 22. If you know of a family in need of assistance, please contact the parish office at 773-539-7510.

ATTENTION ALL DRIVERS Please do not block other cars in our parking lot with your car. If all of the designated spaces in the lot are full, it is necessary to find street parking. Thank you.
