JOIN THIS COMMUNITY OF FAITH...IT’S YOUR HOME! It is my pleasure as pastor to see the young families (and hear the little ones) during Mass. While some may find it disruptive, it serves as a reminder to all of us that the life of the Church continues, constantly changing, constantly blooming from “cradle to grave.” One day those little ones will be in classrooms, and their parents will be volunteering in the school. And so it goes. Life goes on. Young families are finding a place to call home at Queen of Angels. This was most recently evident at the Winter Toast where many of the attendees were parents of our preschool children. These little ones started school together and it is my hope that many will end their school days at Queen of Angels together. So, too, will their parents “grow” at the school and parish, learning more about our community of faith by becoming part of our family. I ask your help in enabling the life of the Church to continue, in sharing the fun and responsibilities that affect all families. I encourage all individuals and families to register and to look at Give Central. Give Central makes it possible to contribute on a regular basis—whether or not you are at church. There is no need to carry checks or cash to church. It makes it possible for the parish to budget. Our society is very fluid and people often travel on weekends to see family or friends. Donations through Give Central make it possible for the ongoing work of Queen of Angels to continue no matter what. Donations to Give Central have proven a very popular way to support the financial needs of the church. Please commit to the community of faith where you are welcomed, loved, accepted, challenged. Please register as members and also sign up for Give Central. For more information on Give Central, call Tom Madden at 773-539-7510. Queen of Angels is here for you, please be present for our parish. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Within the tradition of the Christian church, there are differing ways of observing a Lenten fast. For Eastern Catholics and Orthodox, the discipline is close to our understanding of “abstinence.” Certain foods are eliminated from the diet entirely. The rules are basically monastic rules, and the customs of a monastery table are embraced in the home. This year, “Meatfare Sunday” is February 15, and it is the last time that meat is admitted to the diet until Easter. The following Sunday, known as “Cheesefare Sunday,” takes cheese and all dairy products from the table. It is also known as “forgiveness Sunday” because a true fast is about crowning life with love, holding back harsh words, and cutting off anger. The Eastern churches fast even from celebrating the Eucharist from Monday through Friday. We don’t count Sundays as fast days, but Eastern Christians fast through the weekends. People are expected to come as close to the ideal as possible, and the Lenten services keep reminding them not to take pride in their fasting, since the devil himself never eats! What’s left on the menu? Grains, vegetables, eggs (maybe), and fish. Imagine the joys of the Easter table after such a fast! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT dePAUL REFLECTS: Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. Please be generous in filling a bag of groceries and other necessities for the Lenten Food Drive. Checks are also accepted and are used to provide fresh produce at the Lenten Food Drive.

LENTEN CONVERSATIONS WITH WOMEN OF THE GOSPEL Join the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago at St. Scholastica Monastery for a Lenten series. The focus will be on women of the Gospel. There will be time to share their stories and your own. These biblical women—like those of us today—faced hardship, joy, sorrow and surprise. They also knew Jesus. Join in any or all of the events from 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 3; from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 14; and 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 24. All events will take place at St. Joseph Chapel at St. Scholastica Monastery, 7430 N. Ridge. For details, please call 773-764-2413, ext. 230.

LISTEN AND FOLLOW “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” And listen they did. From that moment on, Peter, James, and John were ardent followers, forsaking everything to follow in their Master’s footsteps. Like the psalmist crying, “O Lord, I am your servant,” the three disciples committed themselves to lives of incredible hardship and indescribable joy. After that day on the mountain, they never again wavered in their chosen vocation. Though our tests may not be as severe as Abraham’s and our peak experiences not as dramatic as the Transfiguration, we all face the daily challenges of walking “before the Lord in the land of the living.” As we follow our varied calls to love and serve, let’s be comforted by Paul’s reminder to the Romans: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

TAIZÉ AT ST. JOHN BERCHMANS The season of Lent is a time for us to renew our relationship with God. We are reminded to spend some time in prayer and reflection. Join in an evening of song and quiet prayer in the style of Taizé at 7 p.m. Friday, March 6, St. John Berchmans, 2517 W. Logan Boulevard.

ON THE ARTS SCENE The Arts Scene will present Rebekah Sorensen in recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7 in the church. Her program will include folk music composed by Beethoven. Plan on joining us for an evening of outstanding music in a neighborhood setting for a freewill donation.

WELCOME TO SPRED: A prized experience of Communion with Children and Adults with Special Needs

Last Sunday, February 22, many families of this parish gathered for the 9:30 Mass. They were graced with the opportunity to share an experience of a beautiful ritual of inclusion and communion with the SPRED communities of Queen of Angels Parish. The pace was a little slower to honor the tempo of our Friends with special needs. Interpretive movement enhanced the Liturgy of the Word to bring new insight to its meaning. Simple, prayerful movements of the SPRED catechists and their partners graced the singing of the Psalm. The ritual of table setting and the presentation of gifts were choreographed to highlight the richness of the ritual and honor the contribution of our Friends with disabilities. Refreshments and hospitality were offered to all after the Mass. Many people stopped by to express their gratitude for this prayerful experience of Liturgy. Come and see what is behind all of this! Come and visit the SPRED center in the Parish Office building (above the gym and Lower Voss) at 4412 N. Western. If you like what you experience as you share Mass with us, then come and find out how you can have more. We welcome you; we invite you to join one of our SPRED communities and we offer you a wonderful and unique way to deepen your own prayer life … to find the more that we all are longing for. Come and be happy with us! Come and taste a little more of SPRED. It just may be the perfect fit for you! For further information or to schedule a time to observe a session, visit www.queenofangelsspred.org or call 773-539-3634. —Julia Hess, SPRED Community Religious Worker
