Super Sundays at

SALA Phuket

As Phuket’s weekdays become more hectic and traffi c-clogged, locals and visitors alike increasingly seek Sundays that are a haven of peace, quiet and enjoyment. One of the best options available is to head up to the north-west corner of the island to lovely Mai Khao Beach and the beautiful grounds of the SALA Phuket.

The Mai Khao area is a vision of a tropical island as it used to be. The sand stretches for miles, palms sway in the breeze, few other people can be seen and the sea is begging for you to take a swim. There are a small number of luxurious resorts in this area, but on the whole Mai Khao has yet to be overtaken by development. Partof the reason is because this area is actually part of Sirinat National Park and so, much of the land is protected. The National Park is a fantastic attraction in itself; spread over 90 square kilometersand comprising a saltwater mangrove forest, a nature trail with a huge wooden walking platform and a wide variety of plants and animals.

The SALA Phuket combines historical Sino-Portuguese architecture with modern fi ve star facilities such as a luxuriousspa and gym, three beachside swimming pools, extensive lawns and a breezy open SALA restaurant overlooking the lawns and the beach, where Chef Jan Hollister oversees the preparation of delicious cuisine that combines the the ultra-healthiness of a Californian beach club and with a Wine Spectator-awarded cellar that complements the food perfectly.

It’s the ideal place to enjoy a swim with the family and then kick back and relax on a long, lazy Sunday with glorious cuisine and majestic west-facing vistas across the Andaman Sea. The extensive lawns and beach are perfect to let the

“little ones” run free, secure in the knowledge that they are totally safe in the SALA’s private grounds.

The beachfront bar adjoining the air-conditioned SALA restaurant serves a variety of delicious cocktails, cold beer, wines from all over the world and refreshing soft drinks. If that weren’t enough at 6pm the “Happy Hour” starts and the funky Blues and cool Jazz from the Pjae Stanley Band kicks off to welcome in a gorgeously decadent sunset. It’s no wonder that so many guests choose to stay on late and keep savoring another Super Sunday at SALA!

A Truly Grand Sunday Lunch

A word of caution, as the offerings at this lunch are so abundant and spectacular, you MUST pace yourself and leave some space for the desserts, ice creams and fresh fruit and particularly the HUGE array of cheeses…..without doubt one of the best selections we have ever seen in Phuket.A wandering singer and guitarists walk among the happy throng playing requests….which included a couple of birthdayswith lovely cakes brought on to the surprised recipients duringour afternoon. Doubtless this Family Lunch is becoming a birthday favorite for kiddies and adults alike and the easy informality of the afternoon will be an attractive enticement to families for sure. The only things that are not Grand about this new lunch are its happy informality and the price with the all you can eat food option priced at 1,490 baht net per person and the food option plus a half bottle of lovely wine per guest at 1,890 baht and remember children under 6 are free and from 6 to 12 are half price. Booking is highly recommended to avoid disappointment.

Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket 683 Patak Rd., Karon Beach, Muang, Phuket 83100, ThailandPhone: +66 (0) 7620 1234Fax: +66 (0) 7620 1235Email: [email protected]

The wonderfully-situated Centara Grand adjacent to the luscious sands and sparkling Andaman Sea on Karon Beach re-started its famous Family Sunday Lunch on April 7th and it will now continue throughout the “Green Season” until Sunday November 3rd. The Family Lunch is as spectacular in its cuisine, libations and ambience as the name “Grand” suggests. Grand by name and Grand by nature is most defi nitely the style of this new lunch.A truly memorable Sunday lunch demands a terrifi c location and there is no doubt that the Centara Grand commands one of Phuket’s most perfect lunching spots for a relaxed and ebullient Sunday with family, friends, or both! The airy, expansive open-sided sala of Mare Restaurant, in which the lunch is cited, overlooks the beautiful beach and sea, with festoons of verdant vegetation and tropical fl owers gracing the gardens around it. The sun dances, cool winds caress and the happy throng of diners breathes a deep sigh of satisfaction as they settle into the enjoyable task at hand.Mare’s huge open space encourages walking around, checking out the abundant and tempting food stations, while chatting with friends and the many other guests who have discovered this lovely Sunday lunching venue. The food includes irresistible cold water imported sea foods such as French, American and Japanese oysters, Maine lobsters, giant Alaskan king crabs, mussels, king prawns and clams, all of which were a mega-hit on the Sunday of our visit. The sushi and sashimi station drew an enthusiastic crowd as the offerings of tuna, salmon, yellow fi n, seaweed, ginger and the like with soy and wasabi were fresh and extremely tasty. Then there are plain and pre-mixed salads to cleanse the paletteprior to taking on the full array of meats……wagyu prime rib steak, lamb, pork, fi sh and fowl, or the many cooked dishes in their silver salvers that are set out along the fringes of Mare’s huge, state-of-the-art modern kitchen with its retinue of attentive chefs attending to your every request. (Don’t miss out on the foie gras station…)We found the New Zealand lamb which was cooked exactly as we requested to be a highlight, but quite frankly there is so much great cuisine on offer that we were only able to sample a few of the temptations that abounded!

The 9th Floor is one of Phuket’s most elegant gourmetrestaurants and takes great pride in providing their huge number of local and international customers with the best in food, wine and service. 9th Floor is a sort of temple celebrating the very fi nest things in life and yet the restaurant is actually situated on the top fl oor of a rather unimpressive condominium building off Rat-U-Thid Road in Patong. Ascending in the elevator, many fi rst time visitors must have thought to themselves: “This can’t be the right place!”

But when the elevator doors slide open it’s like entering a parallel universe of elegance, style, wonderful views over Patong, fabulous cuisine and beautiful waitresses offering you an inviting “Wai” of greeting.

The great problem with writing a restaurant review about the 9th Floor is that when you have achieved perfectionit’s very hard for the reviewer to identify new things to write about. And so it was on our most recent visit in March. As always, the food and wine was sensational and reasonably priced. As always, the girls were attentive, beautiful and knowledgeable…. in fact several of them have qualifi ed as sommeliers to more proactively guide you through the extensive wine list. At least they were wearing a new design of little black dress as they glided about the elegant dining room, but these were just as alluring as the dresses they’d worn on my previous visits!

It’s a sign of a truly great restaurant when you have to book a year in advance to get tables for Christmas or

is a Perfect 10

Page 39: The Guide Phuket May 2013

New Year’s Eve, but this is actually the case at 9th Floor, with many passionate customers returning year after year.

At least this Wednesday evening, things had calmed down enough for Thomas Brack the engaging manager to sit with us and share a glass of wine. Thomas is the well-known and highly professional soul of the 9th Floor and is always on hand to welcome guests and old friends alike. He spends time in Europe each year and usually brings back some little innovation to add the 9th Floor’s already superb quality. Last year he visited some Spanish vineyards, so that he could add some new wines into the 300 plus selection in the restaurant’s superb cellar. It was one of these, a sensational Aalto from the Ribero Del Duero that we enjoyed with our supper and with Thomas.

The doyen of the 9th Floor’s kitchen is internationally-trained Chef Wara Pakdeevirote who has been producing wonderful food since the 9th Floor opened. Her menu features a wide selection of award-winning Mediterranean, meat and seafood dishes, as well as Alpine specialties and a superb selection of Thai dishes.

As you drift into the 9th Floor’s welcoming space you will notice the huge glass windows with the lights of Patong twinkling below and the Andaman Sea beyond. Sea breezes waft gently as you seat yourself at the welcomingbar which serves terrifi c cocktails, local and international beers. You’ll take in the sound of the cool jazz playing and notice the wine glasses sparkling in the candle-glow.

And you’ll intuitively understand why 9th Floor has featuredin the Thailand Tatler’s Best Restaurants every year since 2009 and has established itself as a gem of good taste in the heart of Phuket.

The 9th Floor actually lives up to its slogan ....heavenly food and wine, served by angels…..and is a little slice of perfection in an imperfect world.

Honey is a sweet food which has a long history of human consumption. However researchers are turning up abundant new evidence of honey’swide range of medical benefi ts, from helping cure conjunctivitis in the eyes, to athlete’s foot. Honey’s powerful healing attributes have been used for thousands of years and have been known to promote the healing of cuts, and curingof ailments and diseases for many generations.

Honey is made by bees using nectar collectedfrom fl owers and there are many differentvarieties depending upon the t ype of bee, or insect which does the collecting and the fl owers from which the nectar is gathered. Honey bees transform nectar into honey by a process of regurgitation and evaporation and then store it as a primary food source in wax honeycombs inside the beehive. Honey gets

its sweetness from the mono-saccharides, fructose and glucose and has approximately the same relative sweetness as granulated sugar.

One of the greatest fascinations of working with honey is learning about all the different fl oral varieties of honey, plus their appearanceand quality and then experimenting with each to discern their unique taste and fl avor. An easy way to detect natural honey is by keeping it in a glass bottle and leaving it for a while, until you see the pollen fl oating on the top.

Honey has a far wider range of benefi ts than most people appreciate including antiseptic, antioxidant, vitamin B and C, phosphorus, calcium, minerals and amino acid properties.

Health Applications of Honey• Mix three teaspoons of raw organic

honey, with three teaspoons of raw organicapple cider vinegar and mix with a glass of water and drink every morning, to help stimulate your entire system and balanceyour body and weight.

• Honey, papaya, banana, orange, yoghurtand raisins when mixed together, make an excellent breakfast.

• For insomnia, a spoonful of honey mixed with warm water, or hot milk is a miracle antidote that helps you have a good night’s sleep. It is even more powerful if you also meditate before going to bed.

• Honey is a natural cleanser which exfoliates skin from the inside to bring out radiant and clear skin on the outside. Blend pure honey with banana and applyto your face for 10 – 15 minutes. It works wonders for ironing out fi ne lines and lightening the skin.

• Honey is a great conditioner for your hair. Mix honey with olive oil and apply this mix onto well-shampooed hair. Leave it on for 3- 5 minutes then wash off to experience very shiny and silky tresses in a jiffy.

These are just a few of the many health and beauty benefi ts of honey, so make sure to try out these amazing uses and very soon you will want to make honey an integral part of your ongoing beauty regimen.

Nature ToursAs Khaolak is surrounded by national parks, an eco-friendly nature tour is a must. A typical tour with pick you up about 09:00 and you’ll be driven to a fi shery to have a look at the many exotic species there, and then taken to an elephant camp. Riding an elephant through the jungle is a life-enhancing

experience and you’ll be amazed at the gentleness of these huge beasts. After lunch you are bussed up to a camp in the mountains where bamboo rafts then take you downriver.

Trekking in Khao Sok National Park to the north is sublime and there are riverside cottages for rent, plus river rafting and tubing.

Scuba Diving and SnorkelingBeginner courses and daytrips for experienceddivers are freely available, most groups making up about six divers maximum. For those who can’t get enough of the vivid underwater life in this area there are also live-aboard trips.

Sea KayakingThere are several companies offering sea cave kayaking tours from Khaolak to nearby Phang Nga Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the departure point, the ‘mother ship’, which also transports the kayaks, takes you to limestone islands that have collapsed into themselves leaving the interior intact and untouched over many years. Sea caves lead into these lagoons and when the tide is right the result is akin to visiting a parallel world where time stands still.

Wining and DiningKhaolak has an abundance of great Thai and international restaurants, pubs and bars, some offering music and all are welcoming and friendly.

Ao Nang BeachJust 18 km from Krabi Town is beautifulAo Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majesticlimestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beachesincluding East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range.

Noppharat Thara BeachJust 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined withmajestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides.

Railay BeachThis beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. WestRailey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area as it could actually be classifi ed as a mud fl at, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumpingactivity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high diffi cult rating.

Pra Nang BeachConnected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost

headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local fi shermen leave offerings for good fortune.

Klong Muang Beach/TubkaakKrabi's latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming.

The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limitof Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and touristattractions are located.

The Phi Phi IslandsKnown for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as major “party islands.”

Poda IslandsSituated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometersoffshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for fi shing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful fi sh.

Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cli s and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches.

Throw away your watch and bask in nature's beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, sh, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all.
