We always have difficult decisions to make when we craft this message; so many happenings at the Guild. Just look at the rest of the Bulletin! Bill Alcaro, our Bulletin Editor, does a fabulous job promoting all of the things we do (and edits this message too)!
We can never cover all that we might like and we can never thank our volunteers enough, but here it goes: We could not survive without the help from all of our volunteers. Thank you!
By the time you receive this, the two person show of Paul Hansen and Vince Matulewich, Lost Sacred Disciplines, will be on display. Make sure that you attend the reception on September 8th from 3:00-5:30. Provocative and visually synchronous collaborative work, film, and music will combine to make this a special event. Add to this a fictive history that will be delightfully creative and fun, and you have a recipe that is hard to match. Be advised that the film starts at 3:00 sharp, so come out early.
The Guild will be home to the Catalyst Art Academy, proposed to us by Kristen Lanfrank, Teacher of Art at Rumson- Fair Haven High School. Art Teachers Kate Okeson and Amy Lepping will also provide guidance and instruction. The objective: To provide a high level artistic portfolio experience while offering scholarships to those students who could not traditionally afford this opportunity. The Academy furthers our vision: To provide art experiences to the community, and to reach out to all.
Kristen and Kate are long time Guild members, who have provided figure workshops, portfolio reviews and paint parties. In addition, they organize and exhibit the works of their Art students from RFH every April at the Guild, and the quality of these shows is phenomenal. Both teachers have been Guild partners of the highest order. We look forward to helping this program get off the ground.
On September 22nd, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the Guild will be hosting an Artists' Materials/Art Rummage sale. Secure an outside 10' X 10' area and bring tables, racks and whatever materials or art you wish to give away, barter, trade, or sell. Keep everything you earn and pay a nominal fee to us ($15 Members, $20 Non Members). Call the Guild for more information and how to secure a spot.
Pratima Rao returns to the Guild this fall. Pratima will be conducting a two day, fall colors, plein air workshop in oils on October 23rd and October 24th right at the peak of leaf peeping season. Pratima’s classes and workshops are always very popular, so we urge you to register early. Information about the workshop and class is in this bulletin and on our website. Her oil painting class begins September 27th.
Finally, do you know that we just spent $10,000+ for a new roof? That, coupled with our recent renovations, leaves the parking lot as our next project. When that is completed, the physical plant of the Guild will be deserving of the treasures that we exhibit within!

Guild of Creative Art Class Descriptions
Watercolor – Beginner through Advanced with Randy Mayer Randy’s Watercolor painting class is structured so that
students will learn the fundamental techniques and properties of the medium, to achieve a successful painting. Students will be working from photographs and/or still life subjects. Classes will begin with a short demonstration, followed by time for students to work on their paintings. There will also be a “Paint Along” available, showing step by step painting, for the students who are more comfortable learning in this way. Instruction will be personalized to suit individual needs and interests, and because classes are limited to only 8 students, each student will receive one on one time.
Drawing – Beginner through Advanced with Randy Mayer Beneath every great piece of art is a great drawing. Randy’s
drawing class will be structured to give you the fundamentals necessary to improve your skills and do your own “great drawing”. Whether you would like to be able to do a “vacation sketch”, a drawing for a painting or one to stand on its own, this is the class for you.
Mastering the Media of the Masters, Oil Painting with Sven Widen This class is a studio course in oil painting for
adults and students age twelve and older. Students will learn techniques, materials and substrates of classical, Old Masters, and contemporary oil painting, and will work from still life set ups, although working from a photo reference will be accommodated and used to its greatest benefit. The prime goal of this class is for the students to have a hands-on understanding and familiarity with the media, ultimately to find their own style and voice.
Guild Photographer’s Group This workshop will meet the second Tuesday of each month. Each meeting will explore a different
theme. This workshop is an interactive discussion and critique. Tuition is FREE to Guild members, $5.00 per session to non-members.
Oil Painting Landscapes and Still Life with Pratima Rao In this class on oil painting, students will learn to paint a
successful landscape or still life in oils in the studio. Understanding key concepts of oil painting such as composition and design, effects of light, color value and temperature, lost and found edges, as well as linear and atmospheric perspectives will be addressed. Students can use their plein air study and/or reference photographs to paint a landscape, seascape or still life of their choice.
Beginning Drawing with Karen Dooney Ever want to learn to draw or haven't drawn in years? This course will cover the
fundamentals of drawing including shading, composition and line. Behind many great works of art, abstraction or realism lays a strong drawing. No experience necessary. Open to adults and teens.
Pastel Impressionism with Karen Dooney Gain basic skills in two-dimensional artwork with pastels, a flexible opaque medium
that allows layering and building of color, much like oil paint. Class will focus on composition, negative shapes, and other fundamentals for beginners using colored photographs and still lives. All levels are welcome.
Drawing and Painting for Children, Teens, and Adults with Leslie Backlund Individual attention is given to
students of all levels and interests. Students learn drawing, composition and color theory while working on their own choice of subject matter. Leslie also offers a Portfolio Review class for teenagers who are preparing to be art majors in college and portfolio prep classes for young teens applying for high school art programs.
Framing Your Artwork Yourself with Hillary Binder-Klein The first session of this framing course covers the basics of
framing. The second class concentrates on the hinging technique of matting, and completing the framing process by wiring the piece correctly. Students will mat, frame and wire one of their own pieces.
Lyrical Abstract Expressionism with James Kent Lyrical Abstract Expressionism painting class begins its 22nd year in the fall
of 2019. This class teaches the non-representational, non-objective abstract expressionist painting style as pioneered by artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, James Brooks, Franz Kline, and others. Paintings are started with no preconceptions, with an emphasis on editing as the most important part of the process. Students work in acrylics. Painting time and a group critique is offered . (THIS CLASS IS NOT TAKING NEW STUDENTS AT THIS TIME)
Figure Drawing with Kristen Lanfrank and Kate Okeson Figure drawing is a vital part of the fine art portfolio as well as a requirement for all college art majors. Learning to draw from life is a very important concept for every artist to master. Email [email protected] for information.
Register by calling the instructor (see schedule) or click HERE to register online
Applicants will need FIVE framed (if suitable) pieces of professionally presented artwork in their media category:
Flat Work – including acrylic, watercolor, oil, pencil, pastel, photography, mixed media, and printmaking
Sculpture – including wood, glass, ceramic, metal, and stone
Work will be judged on the following criteria:
Originality/Creativity: The work must be different and inventive, and not appear to be copied from other sources.
Submissions will be judged as a Portfolio with emphasis on a consistent, distinct style that looks like it was done by the same person. Submissions may show evidence of experimentation with materials and imagery, as well as an indication of risk-taking.
Composition/Design: All submissions must show that the artist has a strong understanding of composition, which is
defined as a thoughtful arrangement of art elements (color, texture, line, shape, space, and value) using the principles of design. The work should be commanding, with fresh visual impact, and have a sense of “flow” that is simultaneously controlled and organized around a strong center of interest.
Technique/Execution: The manner and skill with which the artist uses the tools and materials to achieve the chosen
effect must be consistent and well done. The artist must show a mastery of the media including color theory, perspective, the printing process, and Photoshop or HDR as applicable.
