The Dean’s Message
As you read this, we’ll have enjoyed Richard
Elliott’s recital at Mees Hall and entered fully into
a new season of duties on the job and programs of
the Columbus Chapter.
Two special events will take place in October:
Workshop: The Aging and Changing Voice
Saturday, October 12, 10:00 a.m. to noon and
Monday, October 14, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
(refreshments one-half hour preceding each workshop)
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 1450 East Dublin-Granville Road
Sharon Stohrer, presenter
Everyone who works with singers of any age will benefit from the
expertise of Sharon Stohrer, the presenter for our first workshop. Held on
two occasions to maximize opportunity for attendance, Ms. Stohrer will
discuss managing the adolescent changing voice, dealing with aging
voices, and rehearsal strategies, with emphasis on vocal health. Please
refer to the Programs page in the directory or on the website to read about
Ms. Stohrer’s background.
PEDALS, PIPES and PIZZA
Saturday, October 26, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Broad Street United Methodist Church, 501 East Broad Street
We are pulling out all the stops for the Pedals, Pipes and Pizza event on
Saturday, October 26th, from 10 am to 1 pm. A basic plan for the day
was drawn up by John Bryan, chair of the event, with Sally Casto and
yours truly. It shapes up to be a very exciting day, filled with information,
demonstrations, games and activities all designed to engage a young
audience and promote interest in the organ. All of us can help reach as
many youngsters as possible by spreading word of this event and
distributing the flyer that John Bryan has prepared (found at the back of
this issue).

Willis/Warner Organ Bench Exchange
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play a particular
instrument here in Columbus? Have you ever thought to yourself what it
might be like to lead a different congregation, other than your own, in
worship? Have you ever wanted to sit at a particular instrument and just
“pull out all of the stops?”
After much talk and a few months of planning, Andrew Willis and I
decided to do an “organ bench exchange” at one another’s respective
church. The exchange occurred on August 11, 2013, and we simply
switched congregations and instruments.
Although we are both organists at local Methodist Churches, the style of
worship can be very different, even within the same denomination. For
me, King Avenue United Methodist Church provided a unique
opportunity to worship and provide music in an open and affirming
community. The all-inclusive style of worship brings a new perspective
on how we worship both as musicians and as Christians. For Andrew,
Eastview United Methodist Church presented him the chance to fill the
shoes of a fellow organist in an intimate setting and to connect with
fellow Christians on a spiritual journey outside the walls of King
Avenue.
The AGO mission statement reads, “The mission of the American Guild
of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral music.” Last
month’s Guilder listed the mission and several bullet points to achieve
this goal. One of the bullet points listed said, “Provide networking,
fellowship, and mutual support.”
Have you provided networking, fellowship, and mutual support with
local organists in our AGO community? So many times we go to an
AGO function and it is assumed we know everyone, but I wonder if there
might possibly be, at times, a disconnect between the different
generations and denominations of organists within our chapter?
By doing a bench exchange, we can bridge the gap between all organists
in our chapter, because it encourages fellowship, communication, and
even networking by allowing us to be exposed to other congregations,
musicians, and styles of worship.
Perhaps you can do a bench exchange with a fellow organist and guild
member. Perhaps someone who secretly dreams of playing a particular
instrument in our city could have that chance because of the willingness
of another organist to give the bench up for just one Sunday. Think about
the possibilities and the fellowship and support that could be gained from
meeting other organists in our chapter through a Sunday morning organ
bench exchange.
Peace and blessings to you.
