It's called the "Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program" (SNAP), and it provides free food credits to 42 million Americans who use the credits to purchase junk food, birthday cakes, sodas and more. As a result, U.S. taxpayers are subsidizing the soda industry to the tune of $4 billion a year while low- income food stamp recipients drink themselves into chronic diabetes and obesity. Far from what most people believe, the federal food stamp pro- gram (SNAP) isn't a program to provide nourishment to people of low income. It's actually a program engineered to keep the masses sick and diseased while pumping tens of billions of dollars each year into the processed food industry run by powerful corporations like Coca- Cola, Pepsi and Kraft. The USDA SNAP website admits, "Soft drinks, candy, cook- ies, snack crackers, and ice cream are food items" and are therefore eligible for purchase using food stamps. This means the U.S. govern- ment is subsidizing the aspartame industry as well. All the poisons that are put into these foods -- sodi- um nitrite, MSG, petrochemical food colorings -- are all being sub- sidized with tax dollars. Meanwhile, in order to block nutrition, the USDA program specifically forbids the use of food stamps to pur- chase vitamins. So while taxpayer money can be used to load up on Diet Coke, not a dime can be used to pro- tect health with something like Vitamin C. Far from helping "poor, starving peo- ple" gain access to nourishment, the federal food stamp program is nothing more than a taxpayer subsidy to junk food and soda companies who are making the population sick and diseased. When people consume these foods, they become riddled with diabetes, cancer and heart disease. This makes them easy prey for pharmaceutical companies who also operate on government subsi- dies (Medicare and Medicaid) to bilk taxpayers for billions more in ill-gotten gains. An obvious solution to all this would be to limit the use of food stamps to only "non-processed" food items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, bulk bags of rice and beans, fresh meats and so on. BEAUFORT, SC - April marked the start of Beaufort County’s par- ticipation in the annual statewide Zero Tolerance for Litter campaign. The month-long event is a collabo- rative effort between law enforce- ment and a host of state and local agencies, aimed at creating public awareness of the effects of littering in South Carolina. Throughout this month, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Environmental Crime Unit will be increasing patrols and activities focused on litter reduction. Investigators will be targeting litter offenders, from those tossing garbage out the window of their vehicle, to commercial vehicles transporting uncovered loads. Citations for litter-related vio- lations can and will be issued, with fines ranging from $200 to more than $1,000. Deputies will be present at sev- eral of the County’s drop-off cen- ters, ensuring that refuse is proper- ly transported and disposed of. And in addition to enforcement meas- ures, Environmental Crime Unit investigators will provide educa- tional opportunities through school presentations and public service announcements. Many community groups have already pledged participation by scheduling roadside clean-ups throughout the county. Far from what most peoplebelieve, the federal food stamp pro-gram (SNAP) isn't a program toprovide nourishment to people oflow income. It's actually a programengineered to keep the masses sickand diseased while pumping tens ofbillions of dollars each year into theprocessed food industry run bypowerful corporations like Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Kraft.

The USDA SNAP website

admits, "Soft drinks, candy, cook-ies, snack crackers, and ice creamare food items" and are thereforeeligible for purchase using foodstamps.

This means the U.S. govern-ment is subsidizing the aspartameindustry as well. All the poisonsthat are put into these foods -- sodi-um nitrite, MSG, petrochemicalfood colorings -- are all being sub-sidized with tax dollars.

NATION - On one hand, Proverbs 13:24 reads“Whoever spares the rod hates their children, butthe one who loves their children is careful to dis-cipline them,” and onthe other hand, moreand more child psy-chologists argue thatspanking is not aneffective method ofcorrecting children’sbehavior. Some childpsychologist haveeven argued thatspanking childrenincreases the likeli-hood that they willgrow up to be aggres-sive adults because thespankings teach themviolence.

We asked thequestion, “Should chil-dren be spanked?”

“Only if you love them!”“Yeah they should be spanked! Not beat,

however.”“I was spanked, d**n we had to go get our

own switches from the tree! i don’t have a crim-inal record, i have an education and a job. it did-n’t ruin me. but i agree[that] you have to explainwhy the child is be pun-ished.”

“What this tells me isthat our children, shouldknow and understand theconsequences of theiractions so how you disci-pline your children is up toyou not all children need tobe disciplined in the sameway.”

“Child abuse is a seriousissue in this country and Ithink it is absolutely immoralfor someone to try to useScripture to justify suchthings! The “rod” doesn’t

necessarly have to mean hitting or using vio-lence. That scriptures says “discipline” nothit…and there are many other non-violent waysto discipline children (and no not just time out.)I look at it this way: we’re bigger than our kids,we’re allegedly smarter than our kids…if we

don’t hit animals any-more, shouldn’t we

treat our children bet-ter than animals?” “ All I know had itnot been for my parents and the

switch the belt theironing cord and theslipper my residencewould be prison”“The rod” refer-ence is to sheep

herding. “The rod”is gentle guidancefor the sheep herd,

not hitting the sheep.Sparing the rod

would mean that parents withhold guidance, rather than not hitting their children. The

term is misused as a biblical reference overand over. It is not about hitting children.

Children should NEVER be hit.” “Absolutely … every child is different ..

so if your not taking it to.the extreme thanspanking is ok.. my daughter I never had to

spank all I did was give her a look and sheknew.. my son he’s a whole other story.. he’sgets spanked. He could care less if u take all hisstuff from him”

“We should not be in the habit of hitting ourchildren anytime they do something that’s notright. You will be surprised what a good talkingto the child will do to correct the misbehavior.”

“Yea, spank, beat, whop or whatever you

wanna call it just don’t abuse them. Talk to themif u may but following God’s instruction – Ucan’t go wrong. And the Bible do say BEAT.”

“Nothing wrong with tapping that b**t. Notanywhere else and only as discipline.NOTABUSE ONLY WITH LOVE. Children beingabused is an sin before God. Seven of us we allgot OLD school spankings. We all are educated, professional adults”

“I will take what God says, over Man, anyday.”

Based on the responses, it is safe to say thatall children are different and that should be takeninto consideration when correcting their behav-ior. As for whether or not spanking is a goodthing, some say no and for those who say yes,the majority believe it should be in moderation.

Ask Black America: Is spanking the Biblical way to correct a child’s behavior?

NASHVILLE, TN - A new bill inTennessee has some advocates excited andsome disappointed. The bill, if it passes intolaw, will reduce welfare benefits of parentswhose kids are not performing well inschool. The bill is being sponsored by twoRepublicans, Stacey Campfield and VanceDennis. The legislation “requires the reduc-tion of Temporary Assistance to NeedyFamilies (TANF) payments for parents orcaretakers of TANF recipients whose chil-dren fail to maintain satisfactory progress inschool.”

If the child does not maintain satisfacto-ry progress in math and language arts, the family’s welfare bene-fits will drop by 20 percent. The bill applies primarily to low-income families, leading some to say that it is discrimina-tory. Rep. Dennis refers to the new law as “a carrot andstick approach,” motivating families with both rewardand punishment.

Democratic Senator Gloria Johnson says that the billdiscriminates against certain families.

“It’s just one more way to punish fami-lies who have fallen on hard times,”Johnson told theGrio. “I don’t believe for asecond this will do anything to improve achild’s education.”

Johnson says that the added pressure onthe child to make them responsible for fam-ily finances is only going to make thingsworse than they actually are.

The law does possess a few amend-ments and potential loopholes. For exam-ple, students with learning disabilities areexcluded, as well as those with anIndividualized Education Program (IEP).The reductions can also be restored if par-ents are more involved in their child’s edu-

cation, such as attending two parent/teacher conferences, eighthours of parenting classes or enrolling their child in summer schoolor tutoring.

National News BriefMaryland State Assembly votes to

end Death Penalty

BALTIMORE, MD - The Maryland state legislature hasvoted to abolish the death penalty, making it the sixth stateto do so. The measure passed by a vote of 82 to 56.

The vote reflected a growing belief among lawmakersthat the risk of putting an innocent person to death out-weighs the use of the death penalty as punishment for crime.

The bill now heads to the desk of Gov. Martin O’Malley(D), who aides say will sign the bill without hesitation.Democrat O’Malley has long led the fight to end capitalpunishment in Maryland.

O’Malley credited the NAACP and other grassrootsorganizations with helping him end the death penalty in thestate.

Benjamin T. Jealous, President of the NAACP said,“This is a big day for Maryland. It’s a bigger day for thecountry. It shows that the anti-death penalty movement isaccelerating.”

The death penalty remains the law of the land in 33states.

Study: African-Americans get four times as many abortions

as Whites

WASHINGTON - A new study shows that Black womenare excellent customers for the nation’s abortion clinics. The abortion rate among African-Americans, according tothe Guttmacher Institute, is 41 per 1,000 women among the15-19 year old age group. This is more than double thenational average of 18 per 1,000.

The study also shows that Black women are the mostlikely group in America to get an abortion. The higheststate on the list is New York.

Believe it or not, this number is not as bad as it was in1990, when it stood at 80 per 1,000. But even though thetotal number of abortions has declined, the percentage ofpregnancies that end in abortion remains the same. Thestudy also shows that Black women, despite representing 13percent of the female population, get 30 percent of all abor-tions. Part of this is due to the placement of abortion clin-ics in urban communities, making them a bit more acces-sible to those who desire them.

Mormon church changes scriptures regarding ban

on Blacks

UTAH - The Mormon Church has revised scriptures thatwere previously used to justify a ban on Black men servingwithin the church.

A new edition of the scriptures was released on March1st now mentions that Mormon prophet Joseph Smithordained Black ministers in his time, redacting years of anti-Black and pro-slavery messages supported by the church.

After Smith’s death, The Mormon Church implementeda ban preventing Black men from entering into priesthoodand Black women from worshiping at temples. That banlasted from the mid-1800s to 1978, when the churchannounced that a “spiritual revelation” called for its reversal.

Now, 35 years removed from the ban, the church seemsready to accept that the original reasons behind the ban werenot driven by spirituality, and instead were tied to Americanpolitics and racism.

While the statement is far from an admission of wrong-doing, or an apology, it is a step towards greater acceptanceof Blacks in the church.

Misdirection

Plantation Education, should college athletes be paid? (written in 2000)

Black Republican: White media masquerading as Black

Raynard Jackson

Reince Priebus, chairman of the RepublicanNational Committee, released his long awaitedreport last week called the Growth andOpportunity Project. It is basically a postmortem of last November’s election results andlessons learned.

The report stated the obvious: TheRepublican Party had problems with key demo-graphic groups such as Blacks and Hispanics. To

address this issue, Priebus has

committed to hiring Black and Hispanic staffersand consultants to address some of the issuesraised in the report. Since the report’s release onMarch 18, some minority staffers have alreadybeen hired. Isn’t it amazing that Priebus hasalready hired more Blacks this year thanPresident Obama?

But that’s something you’ll never read onthe Web sites of either The Grio or The Root. Both are White-owned entities masquerading asBlack media. When I say White-owned, I amreferring to NBC in the case of The Grio and theWashington Post in the case of The Root. It does-

n’t get much whiter than that.As members of the National

Newspaper PublishersAssociation (NNPA) like toremind me, Black Media is bydefinition Black owned and oper-ated. Essence magazine is nolonger Black-owned and we cansee how the content has changedfor the worst under Time Warner, the new owner.Joy-Ann Reid, is managing

editor of The Grio and likeObama, a Harvard graduate. In arecent column, she calledPriebus’ engagement with theBlack community “simply plati-tudinous.” Of course, she does-n’t define exactly what aboutPriebus’ efforts are “platitudi-nous,” whatever that means.

The Root is just as biased asThe Grio. They thought so little

of Priebus’ report that they didn’t even think itwas worthy of one news story. One of theircolumnists did do the typical hatchet job on thereport.

As a Black Republican, I am a first-handwitness to many of the deficiencies of my partyand I have not been shy about expressing myfrustrations. Equally true, I also am a first-handwitness to what my party is doing to correctthese deficiencies and they deserve, at a mini-mum, a wait and see attitude; and at best, praisefor some of the steps taken to this point.

I don’t think any party on the Left or theRight should be above critique. But after con-stantly criticizing the Republican Party, onewould think The Grio and The Root would feelsome obligation as supposed journalists to givethe Republicans a fair hearing and give Obamafair criticism. If these sites were taken to courtand accused of false advertising, they would beconvicted and ordered to pay serious damages tothe public.

In truth, they are surrogates for theDemocratic National Committee and are in thetank for President Obama. Instead of admittingthat, they claim to be an unbiased news sourceand claim to hire objective journalists and pro-vide a platform for the full range of thinking andcommentary within the Black community. Theyfail on all accounts.

They do just as much damage or even moreto the Black community as rap music. In fact, itcan be argued that foul-mouth rap artists standsa better chance of being accurately portrayed onthose news sites than a Republican, Black orWhite.

They criticizedReince Priebus for his“cynical” efforts toengage the Black com-munity. How is seeking tobecome more engaged with the Black communi-ty – something Blacks have been yearning for –suddenly cynical?

Moreover, regardless of your politics,Blacks are better off when two parties truly com-pete for their vote and not take them for grantedas the Democrats are doing. We’ll always havemore power when we can leverage our votes onbehalf of the candidate who isn’t afraid to saythe word “Black” or targets every group exceptAfrican-Americans.

If you’re going to criticize, make sure youspread it around. It’s not fair to criticizeRepublicans while giving Barack Obama a pass.He has not added one Black to his cabinet in hissecond term. Yet, we’re supposed to line up, sin-gle file, behind him. When is he going to showthat he has our best interests at heart?

It speaks volumes that Obama would throwSusan Rice under the bus, back up, and roll overher again. Yet he had no reservation about theuphill fight to get his Republican Secretary ofDefense confirmed by the U.S. Senate. In otherwords, he’ll fight to the end for a White, male,Republican but not a supremely qualified Blackwoman.

Given Obama’s poor record meeting withthe Congressional Black Caucus, I would not besurprised if Priebus hasn’t spent more timemeeting with the Black community thanPresident Obama?

Even more importantly, atleast Priebus issued a plan ofaction after his meetings withBlack folks. Where is the presi-dent’s plan? You can’t criticize aplan that doesn’t exist. Legitimatemedia organizations should criti-cize the president for such neg-lect, but by definition that wouldexclude The Grio and The Root.

The intent of misdirection is tohave one side draw a conclusion as towhere the play is going based on theformation, the fakes and the tendenciesthat follow from the execution of the

play. So if the play is designed to go to the right the team willshift, or overload, or otherwise send a signal that the play willgo to the left. Misdirection can therefore be defined as dis-tracting attention from the designed play by influencing thefocus of the other team towards some place other than thearea targeted by the real play.

In football misdirection can lead to a score, win or lossbut there are no life altering consequences for most individu-als. However, when misdirection is applied in economics, politics, public policy or other life influencing areas, theeffect can be devastating. I offer the following as examples ofthis effort.

During the 2004 Presidential campaign we had an incum-bent President who was directing two costly and unpopularwars, we were beginning to realize that we went to war onfaulty data, Saddam Hussein was still at large, the housingbubble was on the horizon, the financial sector was out ofcontrol, and yet many African-Americans living in Ohio weremisdirected into a discussion of gay marriage and thus Ohiowas won by those successfully misdirecting the conversation.

Tax rates for individuals are lower than they were in the1960’s but we have been misdirected by the 1% to hate taxes. We want services, health care, senior care, education, roads, bridges, food inspectors, clean air and water, zoning, policeand fire protection, and all of the rest of the things that makeus a first world country. Yet the super rich have convinced usthat they should not pay any additional taxes.

I find it ludicrous when some good old boy making$25,000 a year thinks he has something in common withTrump, Limbaugh, Murdock, Romney, Koch, and the othermillionaires toeing the conservation line.

Today in America income disparity is at historical levels. In many corporations the CEO makes more than 1000% morethan the regular workers. 10% of the population controls 90%of the wealth and inside the 10% the top 1% control 70% ofthe wealth belonging to the 10%. But are we talking aboutwealth disparity? Are we talking about the ever growing gapbetween the haves and the have nots? No, we have been mis-directed by the rich into being quiet less we engage in classwarfare.

But perhaps the most disappointing misdirection is thatthe African-American community is not focused on educa-tion, employment, economic empowerment, upward mobility, self pride, and political enlightenment. Instead we have beenmisdirected into an emphasis on sports, entertainment, andthe pursuit of heavenly acceptance.

We are losing our political clout as we follow paths thatlead nowhere. We are losing our leaders because they all donot sing well, cannot dunk, don’t know the lyrics to the latestrap song, and cannot perform the Sunday show.

There are so many pressing issues in our midst today andwe are having trouble deciphering the real from the fake, theworthy of our time from the foolish, and knowing when themisdirection is aimed at us.

With all the “talk” about college ath-letes not getting paid while coaches, direc-tors, and universities earning billions inrevenue, I thought I’d go back into theBlackonomics archives to find the follow-ing article. Although it has taken 13 years,I am glad to see this topic back in the pub-lic discourse; now let’s see if something isdone about it. Talk is indeed very cheap.

Years ago our ancestors were enslavedon plantations and worked for their “own-ers” free of charge. They worked all dayand much of the night, making their own-ers wealthy and securing the economicfuture of their children. Many times theslaves would be asked, or should I say,“ordered” to entertain the owners and theirfamilies by dancing, singing, and evenplaying games. In return for their work andtheir entertainment loomed the promise ofgood treatment and maybe even the where-withal to purchase their freedom someday. An interesting analogy arises here.

Have you ever really thought about thesituation many of our Black college ath-letes are in today? In my opinion, they areslaves too. Many of them are used to makemillions of dollars for their masters – theirschools and their coaches – with the dreamof one day being able to purchase theirfreedom with a multi-million dollar con-tract.

Black high school athletes are lured to

various schools and wooed by coaches toplay the games that bring windfalls to theirschools. They are given scholarships, butthey are often times given “passes” on hav-ing to make the grade when it comes toacademics. As long as they score touch-downs, runs, and baskets they stay in goodstanding with the school. As long as theykeep bringing in the bucks for the school, everything is fine.

The case made by many school offi-cials is that these athletes get thousands ofdollars in tuition and board, via scholar-ships. This is great, as long as those schol-arships also provide our youth with thekind of education that will allow them tohave a bright future, you know, just in casethey do not get that professional contract. Itseems to me the schools have some obliga-tion to assure the student athlete does notget so mesmerized on turning professionalthat he or she neglects academic progress.

Some schools are doing just that, Iadmit, but too many are just bringing in theslaves, using them to create wealth for thenew plantations and setting them free afterfour years. A very small percentage of theathletes will get that pro contract; but pro-fessional teams will never even consider anoverwhelming majority of those athletes.

Sad to say, we sit back and allow thisridiculous plantation system to continueand flourish, all on the backs of our chil-dren. Consider this: many coaches at thesecolleges make one million dollars or moreannually. If they even buy their top athlete

a lunch or pay forhim to go home forthe holidays, thecoach may beslapped on the wrist, but the athlete getssuspended or, insome cases, loses ascholarship. If this isnot plantation edu-cation, I don’t knowwhat is.

I know this has been brought up manytimes before, but we can never bring it upenough. We must continue to look for waysto change the system that enslaves ouryouth and does not allow them to benefitfrom their own labor.

Now, here are some words for the ath-lete who does get that professional con-tract. Please don’t stay on the plantation byrunning to the Jerry Maguires of the worldand giving them a percentage of your earn-ings. There are many Black sports agents, accountants, and lawyers from which youcan choose. Seek them out and do businesswith them. I hope all concerned Black parents willconsider these words when it comes totheir child going to college on a scholar-ship. Don’t let them be new slaves on newplantations. Stay on them about excellingin their academics as well as their athletics. They can use both, and they always need afallback position – an alternative plan.

NEW YORK - When speaking aboutBlack people or to them in public, twofoods you might not want to mention arefried chicken and watermelon. KarlRove, being a high-profile member ofthe GOP, is one of the last people whocould get away with such a reference inthe public sphere.

Those limits were tested recentlywhen Rove joked with Democraticstrategist Donna Brazile on ABC’s ThisWeek. During the exchange, the two ref-erenced a running bet that they have overwho will win elections. Apparently, thetwo exchange food whenever one ofthem loses, which seems friendlyenough.

According to RawStory, Rove andBrazile got into a conversation about thefailings of the Republican Party and thecontributions of BillClinton. That’s whenRove made the remarkthat sent the Twitter-verse into overdrive.

“That was BillClinton after WalterMondale lost, afterJimmy Carter lost,”Brazile said. “We hada dynamic governor

whowas reform minded, who took thosereform issues and brought theminto the national forefront. He reallyhelped recharge the Democratic Party.”

“But you know, the RepublicanParty is out to lunch,” Brazile stated. “Iwatched CPAC, Charles — I mean,Karl… Charles was former friend.”

“I thought I was a currentfriend,” Rove said.

`“You’re always a friend,”Brazile said. “But you owe me somechili.”

“You owe me some fried chick-en,” Rove said, with a joking tone.

Of course we can assume thatRove wasn’t seeking to make a racistcomment toward Brazile, but he is oneof the primary faces of the GOP andconsidered in many circles to supportracist institutions. So, the reference to

fried chicken just doesn’t play out too well in almost any situation. Maybe heshould choose a different food.

ATLANTA, GA - Gospel music sensation, Deitrick Haddon, recent-ly announced the termination of his marriage. He talked about thisand other matters on “The Yolanda Adams Morning Show.”

Haddon talked about a cheating scandal involving Isaac Carreeand his new fiancee. Haddon said, “I learned that people are notready for the truth or transparency. When you go there, they’re [like]what? What in the world?” he said about his telling the truth online.

A short while ago Haddon spoke about his hatred toward Carreewith respect to an alleged adulterous affair with Damita Haddon, hisnow ex-wife. In a Facebook message Haddon wrote, “I do expectIsaac Carree to stand up and be man enough to own up to his mis-takes and give his fans the truth they deserve to know.”

Haddon admits that his initial feeling of hurt and anger got thebetter of him. “I was so upset, cause I didn’t believe that somethinglike that could happen to me when I dedicated my entire life to theKingdom, to advancing the Kingdom since I was 10 years old—preaching since I was 10 years old,” Haddon said.

Haddon continued, “I went through something that made mewalk away. I didn’t fall. I walked away. I went on the war path. I went on a war against God.”

Haddon and his ex-wife once pastored a church and had every-thing going for them, but then suddenly, itall came “crashing down.”

“When you go through somethinglike that, your mind, you kind of lose yourmind for a minute, and I actually lost mymind for a minute,” he confessed. “Butthank God for His mercy and grace. Hebrought me back.”

Haddon went on to say, “I experi-enced that, how you can be so hurt frompeople and things that happen in life thatyou say, ‘I don’t care nothing aboutchurch, singing no gospel music, I don’tcare nothing about none of it. I’m just try-ing to live!”

Adams, host of the radio show, saidto Haddon, “Ifyou do a renewal of the mind, you willunderstand there will always be thosewho are distractions and detractors, butremember who you’re called to.”However, Haddon now says that he has a“fresh vision, fresh anointing.”
