HEARTLAND CHAPTER FALL TEST- 2000 By Bob Kaswonn

Spring Test 2000 Happenings

On ApriI2g.30. 2000 more than 100 humans and whal scemed like: close to that many dogs gathered in Banboo. Wisconsm for the: Heanland Chapter spring t~. Overall. 21 dogs \r.'ere t~ed. 10 in Natural Ability and II in intermediate. 14 prized and ~ of lbe others looked pretty good as well.

Among many fine performances. one in particular stood out as remarkable: . Dd: Bovard's ARRlBA or TI lE HIGH DESERT received all 4' , and a prize 1 in NatunLl Ab.lily. but runnmg m the same group was Dick's son Damon who has ASHEN SHUGAR or THE HIG H DESERT . Ashen Shugar (Arriba' s linennate) also got all 4', but was awarded a 4H in the scarch!!llila 4H in the track. This author is not sure but believes history may have bc:c:n made: when this dog received two 4H honors. Has it ever happened before??? Senior judge Vic Jam and judges Jim Seibel and Dean Umphrey could oot say enough good aboUlthis dog. It was a singular perfonnance and one guaranteed to dr,aw a crowded gallery come: the IntemlCdiate test.

We were pleased to have Rick Molt from Maine. Gary Pool from Idaho. Vic Jam from Utah. and Dennis Carlson from Oregon join our local crew of judges Dean Umphrey. Ken and Greg Hurtig. Jim Seibel. John Pitlo. 12 different apprentice judges participated as well as various helpers from phowgr.\phen to bird schle:ppe:rs 10 gallery control sergeants.

1berc: ~ many many thank you ' s to !\and OUt with the biggest going 10 JonIJudyCotI for serving as field tc:Sl chairpc:nons. Their work begins way before the I~ and ends well after, We hope that Judy will get a break from puppy tending and be able to join us for the nc:xtttSl.

Thanks also go to Marilyn Umphrey, Sue Sundlcc. Brenda Siefkin. Karen Hunig. Lynn Sukup and anyone else who helped put together the lunches- especially those baking those $Wc:c:( treats. ( particularly the lemon ban- )'Urn!). Brenda Siefkin did a bang-up job as fundraiser and auction master!! Big tbank you 's to all who dooated items for the auction including Kathy Coon for the dog qUilts. Jon/Judy Coil and loan Bailey for the art work. Sul.:up's/ HunigslPitlo 's for mise giveaways. Sundlcc's for the 0001 hats and phcasant clock. , Brenda for the chemicals. Coils for the wild rice . Special ment ion for Greg and Ken Hunig for taking responsibility for the grounds. Stan and Lynn Sukup for lining up motels and dinner. Dean Umphrey for picking up the: birds from the aviary. AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO A ANE WEEKEND. The winner of the I1Ime for the sbocgun was "Lucky John~ Pitlo who turned around and donMed the: gun back to the chapter to be raff1ed off again next year. Honorable: mention to Hank Carriger who in true IRS fashion. nnd in the: absence of our ailing treasurer Andy Ye~. put the: squeeze on all prescnt for chapter dues. A final salute to the licket selling kids .

More than 80 individuals attended the Saturday night dinTlCf at the: Bamboo Country Oub for the: food. fellowship. readiJIg of the scores and election of chapter president. Ken Hunig was unanimously reelected to once again lead us. Despite a noticeable slump of the shoulden he graciously accepted the burden of office. THANK YOU KEN!! !!! Doo Doo A ward

It is a chapter tradition to recognize a major faux paslguffaw of !he weekend with the Doo Doo award. This year we had a lie fO( the award. Jim Seibefs was reading scores to the dinner crowd when he noted

ADLER was featured on the oover of the Apri l 2000 GDS along wi th Eric 's friend San Hoffman. Sara and Eric are now engaged. which I am sure is a relief to ROItt Schladetsky who assulPl:d last year they were married. 1bere is some talk about having Roger officiate lU the ceremony since he is. after all. a full y licensed veterinarian. Enc and Sara are moving to New Hampshire and our loss is the NorEast OIapter's gain. How about a honeymoon cruise on one of those Hinckley yachts??

That things get hect ic for the local members on a lest weekf:nd was proved as the Hunigs forgot their grand· son Dick at home when they left for the Saturday dinner. Luckily the Molts came in late from the fie ld. found Dick and were able to give him a lift so he did not go hungry.

Dog trainl:f1 an: always looking for an edge. 50 a lot of us were paying dose attention wben Tom Mincheff was speaking Bulgarian to his dog ARDA OF SANDHI.LL. We wanted to see if these European dogs would respond better to a more native toogue. It seemed to help. but then. Tom lives in SoUIh Carolina and perhaps it is the southern speech tint !hat ARDA is respondmg to.

We like to mae special note of some of the younger fol ks who visit our tests . Ellen (age 16) and Paul (age 13) Waldow were looking pretty bored during dinner but when asked if they like the test they said YES. Ellen says she particularly "enjoys the enthusiasm of the dogs~. No generation gap here.

And fi nally. there was a cen ain apprent ice judge who carried a small folding stool throughout the test. He suffered a lot of guff from the other judges but took it in stride knowing it was just mY}' from those with sore bacb and wet buus .. He is considering operating a stool concession lU the next test .

Hope to sec ODe and a1llU the Fall test - which jUSl ron' be making a return to lowi.

111c Nonheast Chapter had three great days of testing, with sunny to part ly eloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 4O's during the AM and to the mid 60's in the PM. fAch day our test began with the traditional playing of the hunting horns and introdoctioos from judges, handkrs, and all panieipanu of the days events.

Friday, Kevin Jester's dog, BROOKE OF THE HIGH COUNTRY ran the Utihty Test; we saw wonderful searching and tr.ICking. but no prize was gh'cn due to the lad: of obedience. 1ben, we had four of thc lamonia liner to test in Natural Ability. Bob Frate's dog. DUNCAN OF IAMONIA, who had OOfIlr.JCted Lymes OIsease at a critical stage of development showed. lack of desire in the search so no prize was given. Hopefully, with lou of exposure to game she will overcome this and retest in NAT. Next on the days agenda were Peter Rosen's dog. DORCHESTER O F lAMONIA.. and I"ctcr Mcyer's dog, DAlCEY OF lAMONIA OORCHEST ER received a Prize I and DAICEY ~ived al I 4's, a perfea ~ and a Prize I.

Our test chairpet'SOn, Jane McKenna, schcduled a different fare from our previous Saturday evcnings. We gathered at an old historic gr.mge hall in Bowdoinham, ME., where the auxi liary lire department put on a barbe· cue. We feasted on grilled chicken, teriyaki chicken. cheeseburgers, garden salads, and lots of sweets for dessen. The evenings liuctioo and fundmiser brought in approximately S900. Our SOISO winner, Mikc Cregan donated his wiMings back to the club (he was probably feeling so good about just gelt ing a puppy that hc did not have thc beatt to keep the mooey) . just kidding Mikc . AUGUST 2000 THE GUN DOG SUPREME Northwest Chapter of the GrifI'on C ub Spring Test

By Steve Grieser

Page 5

Once again. the Northwest Griffon Club Doslcd its spring test at the Mason's fann near Silver Cteek. WashinglOf!. This is a wonderful site 10 test dogs and even though I have been then: many limes, I always look forward to returning. 1'hc weather cooperaJ:cd with cool. s lightly cloudy conditions, the scenery was beautiful and as always. it was good to sec old friends and to meet some new ones.

This year we tested nine natural ability aDd three intenne(lial:e dogs over three full days. We had the opponunily to evalualc five pups from the Cherry Point "A" liller bttd by Dick Bubb. Thett was a lot of cons~ency between lhese dogs and they all showed promise as line hunting dogs. Unfonunately lhc:re was also a consistent weakness in their affinity for water. However, with the coming summer months and lots of exposure. all these dogs should be swimming eagerly before lesting in IHDT. Our three intermediate dogs were also littennates from the "A" 01 the Great Plains bred by Larry Olson. Congratulations to Jd( Dillon and AQUILA OF THE GREAT PLAINS who received a prize III . We also test several non< lub dogs with Gary Whiling and COT· TONWooD BELLE putting on a (me show. Belle re«ived 1.114·s and a prize I. I always enjoy the opportu· nity 10 see some ~ from outside our ~ing progrom and our chapter appreciates their support of our tests.

Allin all it was a pretty typical \I,'eckend of tesling excep' for one small ltem ... the great bird escape. Late Friday afternoon as lO,e mumed 10 the parlring area it was discovered !hat we had a problem. Somr:how the door to the bird pen !\ad been left unlatched and we now had birds scanered everywhere. 1bere were birds walking around in lhe fields. birds on the bam. birds in the parking lot, birds on lop of cars in the parking lot, birds every· where! It was quite a sight \IOhat with judges, handlers, spectators and even a few dop sneaking around trying to round up stray birds. We did manage to capture a few but we now had a fairly serious problem. How were we going to finish testing all the remaining dogs with the few birds we had kfl? Anyone who has ever been 10 a Griffon IesI knows that when you a have a problem and need a ""'volunteer", you just look for someone who is waiting for a puppy. We didn' t have far to look before Jim Hal\l,"lChs volunteered. After driving four houn 10 rome and see the test: Jim agRled to drive su: more houn to fetch us more birds. Thanks 10 Jim lO,e were back in business and the rest of the \I,·cclr.end went off without a hllch. Unfonunately, lim had to leave by then and drive another four bows back home and never did get to see any of the test.

I would also like 10 thank all the other people who helped al lhe lest with special thanks 10 Terry and John Heublein for the excellent luncheS agIDn. Thanks 10 vary Pool for coming from Idaho and guiding us through the judging and also to Dennis Carlson, without whose involvement and attention to detai l, there would not be a Nonhwest Chapter.

PERMANENT DOG lDENTIFICA TlON Sy Dr Dave Sirk, DVM

Staning January or 2001. 'The Ortbopcdic Foundation of America (OFA) requires you to supply permanent Klen· tification for your dog before they will certify hips and/or elbows. Tattooing is one option, but I fccllhal. Microchipping is a bener choice. Most humane: societies, shelters. and small animal veterinary clinics nave "universal" scan· ners to ID petS that are brought in, if they have a microchip. Scanning is quick and painless and will read your dogs individuailD number. which is registered in I National Dati Bank..

Microcl1.ipping is a simple procedure that can be done with or without anesthesia. Most hip x-rays will require sedation or tranquiliz.ation, and if done then, your dog won't realize helshe has been implanted.

In our practice. we use the AVID Microchip and although cost will vary throughoul the US, we charge about $45.00. which iocludes the registralion into the national database. HOW IMPORTANT IS EXPOSURE?? By Rick Moll

From birth through the first yeM. there is nothing more important (or a young dog than exposure. II all begins with the breeder. They swt these pups with exposure 10 childTen. lou of different people. trips in a vehicle. and Other si tuations thai: a dog might encounter in life. One day it might be to an open field. the next day to a wooded area and maybe a creeli: boctom. The imponanl point in all of Ihis is gclting the pup OUT THERE.

This pasI spring. Jim Seibel. Greg Hunig. myself and the rest of Sundays gathering at the Maine lest witnessed a wonderful example of exposure.

I was walking along with handler Jim Sohns and was admiring the dog's search and her sound confonnalion. Knowing that this pup was only foor months old at lhe begiMing of the lUI hunling season, I was ClU'iOllS as to whal this )'Oung team had encountered lut fall. When I asked Jim about how much hunting he got in he told me that at the beginning of the season he was still working on breaking in the pup to the gun. When he knew the dog was ready. Jim would be ready. A1thoogh theyeDCOUntered some wary grouse (nushed way out in front of the dOZ) and the handier had bumped some woodcock (no (aull of the dog) Jim did DOl. shoot any non-pointed birds.

1be season ended with no birds in the bag. but the bag was FULL. Full of Exposure. There were all o( those days afield. hunting, scenting where game was, leaming where game might be found. putting this all in the memory bank of the young dog. Jim and DELlA or IAMONlA continued to lake these daily jaunts into the woods and fields after the season ended. funher aiding this young dog to reach her full potential.

At the spring test. one would have guessed that this dog had many, many birds shot over her the way she sean:hc:d, changed gears during her tmcking, and the way she entered the: water. What got her to this point was just plain EXPOSURE!!

1be grt:st dogs that we see at our tests and in the field during the hunting season do 001. just happen. 1be potential for this greatness lies within these dogs. oot it must be developed. Developed from puppyhood 10 adullhood by the most imporunt concept o( all, EXPOSURE.

EditON nott: I couldn't agree more with Rick. Pemaps the best analogy I could dnw is the following. How of len haven'l we heard''that child has an aptitude for music or netshe is very athletic". What follows are years and years of practice on • musical inslrUment or bours and hours of practice on the gym floor to develop those skills to the fullest. Without all thai. prac:tiu. the aptitude withers and never reaches ilS full potential. This COO«'pt is the same as WIth pupp;cs. who were born with aptitudes to find game. 1bey need hour!> and boon (yes, even years) of "praCtice" i.e, EXPOSURE. 10 fully develop the: aptitudes they were born with. So, EXPOSE, EXPOSE. EXPOSE!!.
