President’s MessageWelcome to the South Carolina Watermedia Society’s 39th Annual Exhibition. It has been a joy and rewarding experience leading my team of volunteers. Many thanks to our donors and sponsors (listed below) for contributing to this exciting art show! We honor the memory of SCWS Signature Member, Doris Athey, with our Best of Show Award this year, as well as local member Barbara Brock who has a special award in her memory. Our juror, Marc Taro Holmes, had a very difficult task picking out the selections from so many very talented artists. I can assure you that he has selected an exciting watermedia show for your enjoyment. We give thanks to Liz Miller and Pat Goodwin of the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum for their help and support putting this show together. Our executive director, Damita Jeter, has helped me at every turn of events. It is so important for this organization to have this one person who guides us in the right direction year after year. Thanks go out to the SC State Museum for providing the traveling show of our 30 award winners every year. This particular activity shares with the state what we are about at SCWS. Many thanks goes out to Nancy Bracken and Jane Krapels for assisting in sharing our outreach to the youth in the area. Five young men were chosen who reside at AMIKids Georgetown, who were taught to paint and we shared some art culture with them by taking them to the Myrtle Beach Art Museum and two art galleries in Pawleys Island. Those five paintings are hanging in the museum with our show. Maura Kenny, a signature member of SCWS and teacher at CCU, is showcasing some of her students work during this year’s exhibition as well. My heartfelt thanks to my committee who were very instrumental in making this year’s show a success. They, along with this year’s sponsors, contributors and advertisers, are listed below. We hope everyone enjoys this year’s beautiful show! Special Thanks to this Year’s 2016 Board of Directors and Committee Members

The Art of Sitting in JudgmentMarc Taro Holmes

It has been simultaneously a tremendous honor, a great responsibility, and a real pleasure, to be asked to jury the South Carolina Water Media Society’s 2016 exhibition. This year we have 183 entries to be slimmed down into a show of 75 works, which will then be winnowed further to 30 award winners. Only 1 in 6 will make it to the top.I’m feeling the pressure as I’m about to pass judgment. In my own practice, I do a kind of mental judo to quash my competitive spirit. I don’t want to think about good work or bad. I try to judge myself only by quantity, not by quality.Every piece is one step forward. The journey is its own reward, and it shouldn’t matter if other artists have started walking sooner, or have a longer stride. We all get there at our own pace. It’s also worth recognizing no judgment about art is absolute. Yes, I have a few years of experience in making art and teaching drawing and painting. But at the same time, that means I bring my own prejudices and preferences. The selections I have made are as much a reflection on myself as on the work.To that end, I’ve tried to judge each work on its own terms. If it’s a narrative painting, does it convey the story with emotion and impact? If it’s an abstraction, is it designed with complexity and sophistication? If it’s representational, how well does it capture the subject – and does it transcend being a technical exercise. But mainly, I try to think, “Is this a piece that we can learn from?”

Can a fellow artist see in the work something they can admire and emulate? Would even a non-artist be able to see why this hand-made painting stands on its own against the modern day tsunami of digital imagery? I feel, as we make a work of art, we should consider why we want to make it in the first place. What do other people gain from its making? That’s why it’s been such a pleasure to participate in this exhibition. There is a tremendous amount of raw talent, invested effort, and earned experience laid out in front of me. It’s inspiring to see the range of ideas on display. Every artist has their own media and techniques, and the subjects they find worthy of immortalizing. With each one I get a new jolt of excitement. A new direction I might want to explore.Having to look seriously at all the work, to try and understand the artist’s intent, and to deduce the steps in the creation, it’s been like a visit to a world class museum.I hope if you’re a fellow artist, or someone who appreciates art, you’ll get that same energizing jolt from this show. That same inspiration to look at art today, then go into the world tomorrow and bring back your own impressions of the world we live in.Thanks very much,Marc Taro Holmes

SCWS works with AMIKids Georgetown and Coastal Carolina University

In addition to the 39th Annual Exhibit, SCWS has partnered with both AMIKids Georgetown and Coastal Carolina University to bring you two exhibits that will be shown at the same time as the annual exhibit:

AMIKids Georgetown: South Carolina Watermedia Society members and volunteers created a short-term art project for 5 students residing at the AMIkids program in Georgetown, SC. This project began by showing the boys art by visiting the Burroughs-Chapin Museum in Myrtle Beach and the Gray Man Gallery, the Cheryl Newby Gallery, and Brenda Lawson’s Art Studio in Pawleys Island.

The 2nd week consisted of giving the boys a written art test to not only test their knowledge, but to get them thinking about art. They also made their own color wheel and experimented with neutrals, tints and shades.

Weeks 3-5 brought out the artist in them! Art supplies were distributed and they were encouraged to sketch and paint! And did they ever! Each week we could see progress in not only their skills, but also their enthusiasm. By the 5th week, they eagerly arrived showing us sketches they had been working on during their free time!

Currently, the boys are rarely exposed to art. We believe that everyone has a need for creativity and self-expression. Research shows that youth who are at-risk who have access to the arts tend to have improved academic results, improved emotional control and maturity, and increased self-esteem. These qualities will minimize the chances that the youth will get into trouble, but will instead make better decisions.

The boys in AMI kids have made poor choices. They have been assigned to spend time in this juvenile detention center by a South Carolina judge. However, in addition to the skills they are learning through the AMI program (see below), they are enhancing their positive education by learning to express themselves and make better decisions through the SCWS art program.

It is important to expose these boys to as many careers as possible, including the arts. These boys have the potential to pursue art for the rest of their lives, either as an interest or as a profession. These boys will have experienced at a young age the joy of not only going to an Art Museum (probably for the first time in their lives), but also having their artwork displayed in the Museum. Coastal Carolina University : Coastal Carolina University painting students have been invited to exhibit their watercolor paintings simultaneously with the 39 th Annual South Carolina Watermedia Society Exhibition to be held October 8 through November 27, 2016 at the Franklin G. Burroughs - Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Nine painting students from Coastal Carolina University’s department of visual arts will exhibit their watercolor paintings created as intermediate and advanced painters during the 2016 spring semester. The watercolor paintings chosen for exhibition embrace a variety of styles including: Realism, Surrealism, Abstraction and Comic Style. The painters were given an opportunity to create a series of paintings investigating a theme and/or concept. Each student’s artistic development was paramount during the semester’s work and emphasis was given to the main components of concept development, technical skills and creative investigation. The diversity of influences stretched from tattoo art, comics, beauty, emotion, portraiture, classic cars, and landscape to water-media display. The following student’s paintings were chosen by Maura Kenny for this student exhibition which will run concurrently with the 2016 South Carolina Watermedia Society’s Annual juried exhibition; Ashley Arakas, Sophie Brunette, Nick Carmicheal, Shawn Doublet, Katie Farrelly, Morgan Hedgecock, Rebecca Jolly, Kelsey Paparo and Megan Runyon.

The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand’s only art museum. Since 1997, it has stood as a beacon of culture for residents of Horry and Georgetown counties, as well as for thousands of visitors from throughout our state, country and world. Just steps away from the beach, the Art Museum nestles beneath live oaks while serenely overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Housed in a vintage beach cottage, the Art Museum is a nonprofit institution and has proudly been admission free since 2003. Our 11 galleries feature exhibitions of regional, national and international appeal that change frequently and offer a constant array of evocative, thoughtful artwork, often accompanied with enhancing, dynamic programming.

Awesome Museum! Every time we visit Myrtle Beach, we make it a point to visit this museum. We are continually surprised by the excellent quality of the exhibitions that they provide for our enjoyment.
